Student Senate Must Deal With Issues
Student Senate, under the leadershjp of president Wally Thiel, ha.a not accomplished and, in some cases, have not addressed themselves to the basic issues facing student.a on this campus . . Some of the areas which which have occupied the Senate's time are minor in comparison to the basic issues. The Senate baa spent nearly half of the semester on matters like who is legili· mately the publisher of this paper, the question of salaries and the Vietnam Moratorium.
Some of these basic lasuee which should be the concern of the S<mate is the area of students af. fairs. In particular, the question whether a student haa the right to choose a place to stay while a t this insti tution. As It stands now, as a fresh·
· man or sophomore, one is told where he can stay. The Senate should tell the student affairs staff, "Do not tell us where to live, let ua choose for ourselves.''
Another area or concern ia the matter of aca• demic advising. We noticed this is one of the issues that the pre.sent s tudent Senate leadership ran under. Some say advising is a waste or both the student and the faculty member's time .. Others see some benefits in advising. Student Senate should addreaa itself to this question asking is advising necessary and, If so, should be optional to student.a who want advice when selecting academic courses? Other poaeibilitiea · do exist also.
Student Senate should demand from the Board of Regents representation in their deliberation&, not just token acknowledgment that student.a exist.
Alt of now, the United Council president is allowed to give a report at meeting of the Regenta. Our Studen t Senate should lead In re· questing that students be made full members of the Board with complete voting privileges.
A perennial problem which Senate itself has not addresaed its deliberations toward ls the mat• ter of equal representation or Senate reorganiza.. tion. How la it that on-campua atudeQts may be represented u many as eix times while offcampus student may not be represented at all. Let l1I demand that this problem be con-ect,,,' with all due diapatch.
Thia could be a meaningful year !or students if Student Senate takes the initiative.
