Pathway Digital Design and Animation

Project Title Visualisation of History in Animation

Section 1: Rationale (approx. 150 words)During this course, I have studied a range of skills but found I enjoyed doing animation and would like to explore it further for my Final Major Project. In particular, I am interested in character design, environment design and historical accuracy. It is important to me to do this project because I would like a career in animation, I enjoy learning about history and I would like to improve my skills in app/e-book design. The reason I want to explore this people do not look at the historical context and the historical accuracy of the animation. I want to use these animations as a way of examining complex historical periods. I hope to show how important historical influences can be in animation as animations become more sophisticated.

Section 2: Project Concept (approx. 200 words)What my project going to be is to develop an e-book about how history is visualised animation. I am going to look at the Disney films The Sword in the Stone, Brave and Robin Hood and break them down and explain their historical influences. When gathering resources for landscapes and historical architecture, I can look around the town I live in and in the surrounding area. Also, the landscape is hilly and farmland as well, so I can

take photos of these things and use them as primary research and use the primary research to compare it to animated films. While researching, I will note down any key information and I will take photos of any useful influences of landscape and buildings if I can, if not I will find a useful source online. Other important information I need gather will include my target audience (which I can create a survey and use online sources like YouGov), how it will be designed and how it will interact with the audience. How I will do this is to create paper plans of the app and site maps. I will then use Photoshop and InDesign to create the digital e-book. My roles in this project are research, graphic design and app developer.

Section 3: Evaluation (approx. 150 words)I will evaluate my work by keeping a work diary that presents the progress of my work week by week. I will evaluate the progress that has been done that week and compare it to the work from the week before. This will show any changes and improvements to my work and skills. At the end, I will evaluate all my work that I have done and see what I thought went well and what needs improving. I will also state if I feel if I succeeded in doing what I intended. How I would do this by reflecting on the end product and comparing it to what I originally planned to do. I will also reflect on anything that went wrong. I will also ask peers to look at my work and ask for comments for what I have done well and what needs to be improved.

CHAPTER 1

Introduction

This project portfolio is a report for my Extended Project for my second year of UAL Extended Diploma for Digital Design and Animation. My project is to create an e-book on how history is visualised in animated films by looking at the film and looking at the historical influences it is based on and seeing if the films are historically accurate. The first chapter of this portfolio is about the background of the project and why I chose to do it.

The Background of my Project Who am I? To find out what we want to do for our Final Major Projects, we need to know who we are. What are our personal interests, favourite bands, sports team and free time activities? The Who Am I makes us think about what are our interests and make them into a list and/or a mind map. Then we can look and reflect on our interest and decide what we would like to do for our Final Major project.

We had to create a mind map or several mind maps with our personal interests. I chose to do several by splitting them up into my favourite things to do in my free time; video games, music, films & TV and why I like them. I added pictures to it to help visualise the mind map, so it is easy to understand what I mean. What I learnt is I do not have a lot of interest, while I can say there is are different genres in my interests. I think I do have more interests but just don’t know it. I also learnt that I can go into more detail with film and TV than any other interest, so I be interested in doing something in that area.

After creating those mind maps, we had to write down what we knew about our interests. This was to prepare us for the research side of the Final Major Project, this task was primary research into us. So, we knew what we liked, had interests in and what we knew about them. This was so we knew what area we would like to explore for our Final Major Projects. What I learnt by doing this task is I do not know a lot about what I am interested in.

• The background story of the films is a lot bigger than the films give it credit. You have the Expanded Universe which is considered canon and Legends which is not canon but can become it

• When filming on set “Luke I’m your father” that part was kept a secret and the actor in the suit said, “Luke Obi-Wan killed your father”. The only people who knew was George Lucas, Mark Hamill and James Earl Jones.

• Mark Hamill was told Darth Vader was Luke’s father so he would react correctly

Anime-

• Studios that produce Anime include A1 pictures and Studio Ghibli

• Studio Ghibli is considered the Disney of anime and does cooperate with Disney.

• Disney dub and publish any films Studio Ghibli produce in the west.

• Most anime animation style is 2D animation but you can get anime done in other forms of animation like 3D.

By doing this task and thinking about my interests, I learnt I enjoy a lot of things that are animated. I enjoy animated films and video games set in a historical setting because I grew up learning about history and watching animated films like the Disney version of Robin Hood. By doing this task I also learnt that these areas would be the best areas to focus on for my project.

What did I learn on my course? To show what I learnt on my course, I created an interactive timeline of what I did for this course over the last two years. The reason for doing this task is to show off my skills and show how they have developed over the two years. It is also showing how I developed my interest in animation and app/e-book development.

By doing this task, it helped me decide the thing to do for my Extended Project. By looking at what I have done in the first year of my course and the first two terms of year two, I chose to create an e-book on how history is visualised in animation. I came to this conclusion by knowing I want to follow animation as a career and I enjoyed create my e-book for my first year Final Major Project. This project will help because it will allow me to deconstruct animations and see how they have implement their influences.

What is my project about? There are many animations based on historical influences but I feel people do not look at or know a lot about those historical influences. I will use my interest is in historical events and look how history is visualised in animation by creating an e-book on the subject. I will explore different styles of animation (2D and 3D) and how historical events and how they influence the films they influenced.

Why my project is important? This project is important to me because I would like to improve my skills. The skills I would like to improve are app development, primary research gathering and animation skills. I also would like to follow a career in the animation industry.

My Research Plan

Table 3- My Research Plan

EXTENDED PROJECT - RESEARCH PLAN No of Words

Interest/Topic/Theme 150My interest is in creating animations with historical influences. When I started this course, I was encouraged to try out new things, so I was encouraged to try out animation. That included motion graphics, 3D effects and 2D animation. I will look how history is visualised in animation by creating an educational app/e-book on the subject. I will explore different styles of animation (2D and 3D) and how historical events and how they influence the films they influenced. The films I be most interested in looking into the history of The Sword in the Stone, Brave and Robin Hood. Also, I would like to improve my skills in Adobe Photoshop, InDesign and researching by doing this project. Why is it important? - Importance 100This is important to me because I would like to explore because I enjoy learning history and doing/learning about animation. I have not explored historical context in animation and will like to see if they are historically accurate. I would also like to have a career in animation but not too sure what area I would like to work in so I want to explore different areas before making that decision. With this project, I want to improve my skills in app/e-book design and research. My research question(s) 100How history is visually portrayed in animation? What historical influences were used to create animated movies? How accurate are the animated films to the historical influence? Can a different animation style affect historical influence?Who are my target audience? What is the best way to present the information?Research Design 100What I am going to do is watch multiple movies for influences like Brave, Sword in the Stone, How to Train Your Dragon and Grave of the Fireflies. I will look at books such as Dorling Kindersley books to see how the information is set out in them. I will also look at

CHAPTER 2

Literature/Resources Review

Introduction This section is for my secondary resources I have used for my extended project. Most of the sources will be about The Sword in the Stone (Disney film), Robin Hood (Disney film), King Arthur, Robin Hood, interactivity and animation.

This chapter will contain a literature review of the sources I have used and going to use for this project. I will explain how these sources are useful and how they can lead into further sources. It will also contain a practitioner’s report on my influences for animation, two early practitioners and two modern. These also be separated into eastern and western practitioners.

Literature ReviewI will be mainly looking at sources about interactivity and historical figures/events. For research into history, I will look at multiple sources to make sure the information I am looking at and going to be using is accurate because most of the figures and events I am going to be looking at is in the Dark Ages, which means there will not be a lot of primary sources (in history primary sources are sources written/created at the time, around the time the event it is talking about or by someone that lived through it).

As I stated the information I will be getting would be difficult to get because the information is about events that happened during the Dark Ages (the reason it is called the Dark Ages is because we know hardly anything about that era due to hardly anyone knowing how to read and write). So, I am going to find it difficult to find a good source or sources and have to rely on secondary sources (in history secondary sources are sources written or created after the event or figure). I am going to look at the English legend King Arthur and brake down the historical events in the Disney movie The Sword in the Stone. I used the sources I have gathered to pin point the period King Arthur was first mentioned. I then will use the date to break down the film historical figures and events to see what is right with it and what is wrong.

For interactivity sources, it is going to be relatively easy to find sources on that subject because I can look at previous work and look at sources used on them. I need to look at sources about how interactivity can be used in an e-book and how the look of it can be used to make it look more interesting. I will use the information I have and going to gather to design buttons, how or what they are going to interact with. For design research, I will use the information I gathered to design how I will present the information and how the overall look will be, I am looking at Bayeux Tapestry to make my e-book look similar to that.

King Arthur“The historic figure of Arthur as a victorious fifth-century warrior, leading Britons into battle against Saxon invaders, has so far proved impossible for historians to confirm. In fact the one contemporary source that we do have for the time, 'The Ruin and Conquest of Britain' by the British monk and historian Gildas (c.500-70) gives somebody else's name altogether as the leader of the Britons.”(Wood, 2011)

“Few might know that Arthur is a hero whose ancestry goes back to the Brittonic inhabitants of early medieval Wales before the arrival of the Saxons, and not just the kingly figure that appears in later romances. In fact, the Arthur of legend was neither a king, nor the owner of a round table, at least not in the way we use these terms today.

Records about Arthur’s life are few and far between. He emerges in the sixth century in the work of the Welsh monk Gildas , where his victory at Mount Badon is celebrated, but he is not named. It is only in the ninth century Historia Brittonum, composed by another monk, Nennius, that Arthur is named as a “dux bellorum”, a military commander, and his 12 battles are listed.”(Anon., 2017)

“The Dark Age Battle of Mount Badon, known to the Welsh as Mynydd Baddon, was fought between the Britons and an invading force of Anglo-Saxons sometime between 490 and 517 AD. The Saxons were defeated and forced to come to terms with the Celts, establishing a period of peace. Archaeological evidence confirms a sudden cessation of Saxon advances in the south until the mid-sixth century.

Though a major decisive battle, there is uncertainty regarding Badon's date and the location where it was fought. The Historia Brittonum, an history of the indigenous Brythonic people, attributed to Nennius, states that the legendary King Arthur led the British forces at the battle, however the only nearly-contemporary account of Badon, written by Gildas, makes no mention of Arthur at the battle 'From then on victory went now to our countrymen, now to their enemies. This lasted right up to the siege of Badon Hill.'”(Anon., 2004)

Breton King“Geoffrey of Monmouth recorded Arthur as a High King of Britain. He was the son of his predecessor, Uther Pendragon and nephew of King Ambrosius. As a descendant of High-King Eudaf Hen's nephew, Conan Meriadoc, Arthur's grandfather had crossed the Channel from Armorica (modern Brittany) and established the dynasty at the beginning of the fifth century. The Breton King Aldrien had been asked to rescue Britain from the turmoil in which it found itself after the Roman administration had departed. He sent his brother, Constantine, to help. Constantine appears to have been the historical self-proclaimed British Emperor who took the last Roman troops from Britain in a vain attempt to assert his claims on the Continent in 407. Chronologically speaking, it is just possible he was King Arthur's grandfather. Arthur's Breton Ancestry was recorded by Gallet.”(Baker, 2002)

The information I gathered for Robin Hood and King Arthur help me figure out the most common way of telling the stories and the period the legends/myths first came about. The interactivity research helps me to find the easiest way to navigate an app/e-book. The buttons need to be clear and informative so the audience can understand. The colour theory research is helpful to me because I will know what the best colours will be for document and the other information I gathered about it is what other cultures would associate with each colour. The design layout research helps

Practitioners Report For this, I looked at four practitioners, two early and contemporary practitioners. The early practitioners were Walt Disney (the actual person) and the early works of Hayao Miyazaki. My contemporary practitioners are Pixar and Isao Takahata, primarily his latest work “The Tale of Princess Kaguya”. I focused on this piece because it is Takahata most recent director’s role. I researched into these practitioners past works and modern works and created a timeline/infographic that presents the information clearly.

By doing this task and researching into these practitioners, I learnt a lot about their influences and how they got their research. I can learn and implement some of these methods, for example I can do what Hayao Miyazaki did and travel to different locations for inspirations. Doing this would allow me to gather more primary research, like photos of historical sites and possible more information about the legends/myths.

Information I gathered on my four practitioners are on the next two pages.

CONCLUSION - Who/what was my inspiration? /Contextualisation of my study With the information, I have and going to gather I will produce an interactive e-book about how history is visualised in animation. My e-book is going to be similar a visual guide books like Dorling Kindersley books in how to present the information and looking at medieval tapestry for the look of the e-book. I have and will look further more into King Arthur and Robin Hood’s legend to get an accurate date when he was first mentioned and brake down the film The Sword in the Stone.

CHAPTER 3

Research Design

IntroductionChapter three is where I will be explaining my primary research for my Extended Project. I will stating my research questions and followed by how I will gather the information.

Research QuestionsThe aim of my project is to create an e-book that explains how history is visualised in animation. I am going to focus on British history influenced films because I can compare them together to see if there are any similarities. I want to make the application that is educational, it will explain the historical context of the film and will explain how historically accurate the film is to it historical influences.

What I need to research is who my target audience is. Have people I know used or be interested in using educational apps or e-books? On what format have they used it? The reason I am having people I know doing it is because it be easier to gather a response and quicker to distribute. These questions would be helpful in finding my target audience because it allows me to design and layout my information best suited for my target. I will then have a look at similar products and visual guides to break down their design and layout and then use the information I gathered to design the layout and write up the information I going to put in the e-book. For my target audience, I am going to create a survey on survey monkey. The questions I am going to ask are; What is your Age?, What is your Gender?, Do you use a mobile device?, What operating system is your mobile device have?, Are you interested in educational apps?, Do you used educational apps? and How was your experience using educational apps? These questions are aimed to figure out my target audience by gender and age range. It is also to figure out the average user experience of educational apps.

Research Design Evolution Subject I am going to research

I am going to look at historical influences of three animated Disney/Pixar movies. The primary research I am going to do will be of photos of medieval buildings roughly built in the same time era the films are set in. If I cannot find any useful images that way I will go to secondary research. I will use these photos to compare them to the animated movies I am looking at, this is to show how they should look like. To find the best platform to produce on, I will develop a questionnaire to find out the best operating system to produce my e-book on. This will also go towards finding my target audience for my e-book. I will also look at existing apps to see how they interact and layout their information. I will then look at visual guides as well like the Dorling Kindersley books to see how they are lay out their information. Another bit of primary research I will do to improve the look and layout of my e-book is to ask my tutors and peers to see if there is anything that looks out of place or needs improving.

Target Audience

When looking for my target audience, I expect my target audience would anyone interested in history or animation. So, the age demographic would be roughly adults. But anyone doing a learning course would be also interested because it will have historical information and ways historical influences were portrayed in animated films. To find this out I have created a questionnaire that will ask age, gender and other questions about educational apps. On top of this questionnaire, I can look at YouGov. YouGov gives is a service that provides demographics of the most likely people to be interested in things you search on there. So, I will search app, education, animation and history. I will then analysis the information and design my app/e-book accordingly.

Media Analysis

I will look at similar media products too. I will deconstruct similar education app, the things I will be looking for would be how information is presented, what the buttons on the apps do and how it is mapped out. This is so I can make my app recognisable to similar products, just so it does not look alien to people and confuse them. I will also look at visual guides as well to see their layout and see if I can make my e-book look similar to a visual guide like a Dorling Kindersley book.

Skills and Techniques

The skills and techniques I will be using are primary and secondary research finding, photo manipulation, Photoshop, InDesign, inactivity design and layout design. These will be used to design, write up and create my e-book. I will gather sources on interactivity and design, I will use these sources for influence for planning out site maps, buttons and design of pages. To figure out how I will use these skills I will experiment by creating prototypes of my e-book (paper and digital). If I get stuck on anything I will ask my peers or look up tutorials about the thing I am stuck on.

Paper Prototyping

How I will start creating prototypes is by creating paper prototypes. I will create a site map first, how I will do this by creating paper cards with the page name and what will be in each page. I will sort them around and adjust them to come up with the best way to travel through my app. I will also ask people to look at my site map and see if they would travel through it differently.

CHAPTER 4

Research Findings

What I am interested in doing is creating animation based on historical influences. To help me achieve this goal I am doing an e-book on how history is visualised in animation. For primary research, I need to find out my target audience which I have created survey for. I have also looked at a service called YouGov that gives detail on the most likely demographic on a particular subject. I have also deconstructed the layout of visual guides and layout and interactivity of educational applications. I also created paper prototypes by creating site maps with paper cards of my page names on.

The survey I created will be specifically designed to find out my target audience with evidence from YouGov to back up my findings. On the YouGov I searched for the demographics for history, animation, education and mobile applications. The purpose of deconstructing visual guides and educational applications is to see how they designed so I can base my designs on the similar products. The paper prototypes will help me come up with a final design for my product.

Data analysis The aim of my survey is to find my target audience, the questions I asked are What is your age?, What is your gender?, Do you have a mobile device (phone, tablet)?, What operating system does your mobile device have?, Are you interested in using educational app?, Do you use educational apps? and How was your experience using educational apps? I got thirty-three responses on the survey. The highest proportion of age people said they were was 18-29 with twenty-three responses. Which YouGov backs up with education, mobile application and animation.

With “Do you have a mobile device (phone, tablet)?” I got thirty-two responses for yes and one for no. This states that almost everyone has some sort of mobile device that they can use and can access application. The “What operating system does your mobile device have?” had thirty-two responses and one person skipped (most likely the one who did not have a mobile device). The most popular operating system is Android with seventeen answers. The second most popular answer is IOS fourteen responses. This tells me Android is the most popular operating system and the best one to develop an app for since the majority have Android. Eighteen people said yes for “Are you interested in using educational app?” and fourteen said no. But only eight people said yes to “Do you use educational apps?” and twenty-five people said they have not used an educational app. This shows people are willing to use educational apps if there is one that has a subject of interest to them. The last question “How was your experience using educational apps?”, twenty people stated they have not used an educational app. One person said they found it confusing, seven said they found it helpful, two said they found it useless and another two said it was interesting.

My YouGov results are also helpful because they also shows the most likely place in the country the people would be from, politic interests, professions and most likely income. This can help me by letting me know the availability of each demographic. Then I can design and create content that can allow people either use briefly or for long periods of time.

World History Atlas- Mapping the Human JourneyThe Military History of World War IIBlack, J. (2005). World History Atlas. 1st ed. London: Dorling Kindersley, pp.54-57.Pitt, B. (1986). The military history of World War II. 1st ed. New York: Chancellor Press, pp.278-279, 286-287.

World History Atlas- Mapping the Human Journey:

Large clear images Large text for the introduction every two pages. Four pages per period (year range). The first two pages briefly explain the major events of the period and the last two deeply

explain the most important event of the period. Paragraph of text for each subject on the page. Each paragraph on average has four sentences. Text is laid out around images. Titles and subtitles are in bold. Text is simple and easy to understand.

Deconstructing this visual guide has helped me see that writing briefly about subjects can help the flow of the book and not put the reader off. The information used is major to the period, meaning it did not focus on detail and not mention the little things that happened in the period. Each paragraph on average has at least four sentences. The text used is simple but not boring. All titles and subtitles are clearly marked by using bold text and larger text. There also an introduction on each period, this can help me by briefly explaining what each page is about and then not waste the reader’s time by reading through the whole page to see if the information is relevant. The most important thing I feel I got from looking at this one is the text is designed around the images not the images are designed around the text.

The Military History of World War II:

Large body of text. Large images. Titles and subtitles are in bold. Text that explains the images are in bold. The large bodies of text explain the events of each chapter in detail. Two types of images; pictures from World War Two and drawn images of weapons and

vehicles. Start of each chapter has a large title. Each chapter has an introduction that briefly explains each chapter and is in bold.

This visual guide is designed out differently compared to the previous one. The text goes into detail about each subject but does not go off topic and bore the reader. The text again is designed and laid out around images. What could help me is there is text that explains every image and is in bold to indicate it is about the image and apart of the other blocks of text, I could use this to explain certain imagery. The titles and subtitles are in bold as well.

App Deconstruction

Khan Academy World History eBook

Khan Academy:

Simple Design and not over whelming. Easy to understand buttons. Either different colour text or pictures. Has back buttons but no home button. Scroll to progress through the app and no next button. Link to external sources. Pictures from historical sources. Keeps track of what you read. Source author credited at the bottom of the section. Title and subtitles in bold and larger than base text. Pictures clickable for better view. Text simple to read and is not too detailed. Pictures are named and credited. Colour scheme is mainly white, button colours are different depending on the subject you

want to read.

This app is mostly aimed towards adults, most likely towards university students due to the level of detail the information is. The pictures are clickable, to allow the user to view it more clearly but it does not enlarge an image, it only centres and blurs out text and put it in the background. This can be useful if a picture I am using is important to the section, this can allow the user to get a better view. The colour scheme of the app is mainly white but buttons on the homepage are coloured. The colour of the button depends on the subject of the section it is taking you to, for example Math is blue. This can help me because I can colour code subjects and if a button goes to a new area/subject, the button can be colour coded to make the button simple designed and easy for user to read.

World History eBook:

Really simple Basic colour scheme, child friendly (red, grey, purple, green blue and yellow). No back or home button. Have to use mobile device own back button to return home. Text size adjustable. Speech feature that read the text out for those that find it hard to read. Next and previous buttons to travel through an article (previous button does not allow you

to head to the home screen). No images. Ads.

This one is really simply designed and aimed towards children due to its simple colour scheme. The information it has is bullet pointed and really simple to read. Using this app as an influence might allow me to create simple to read text or I could have a section that briefly explains the section that allows the reader to read the general knowledge and give them the choice of choosing to read in detail. Another good feature of the app is the speech button that allows people who are not the best at reading to gain the information.

By looking at the Google Play Store on my Android device I can see that the most popular education applications are language applications that teach people a second language. The second most popular educational applications is driving theory test revision apps. To get to the most popular history application I need to get the thirty-eighth most popular educational app (Khan Academy). This shows history apps are not popular or even useful to people. This may be due to people most likely looking through books or online for information.

Conclusion - How did the research help me with my project?

The things I learnt by doing my primary research includes Target Audience, similar product, how similar products work, how similar products are laid out and how my product is going to navigate. With my Target Audience I found out my likely audience will be male and between the age of 18-29 years old. With this information I can make decision on how the best way to present and lay out the information. For similar products, I seen history educational apps are not popular. This can make it

difficult for me to get my app out into the general public. With the apps I found and deconstructed, I can use them for influences for design, navigation and interactivity. With deconstructing similar products, I looked at two apps and two visual guides. The key details I looked at are how the text is laid out and designed, how the design of the product is set out (images and paragraphs) and interactivity. With the visual guides, the font is simple and clear. The texts are either short paragraphs or detailed. Titles and subtitles and in bold to stand out and to let the reader know they are on a new section. The information on each page is designed around the images on the pages. This information allows me to plan and design my e-book like a visual guide and make the user experience similar to one. While deconstructing the two apps I found, I discovered neither of them had home buttons and one of them did not have a return to previous page button (you had to use an Android device back button). Their designs were simple and not too complex to navigate either. One was aimed towards university students and the other was aimed towards kids. Looking at two different apps that are aimed towards different target audience allows me to see what it is like to read different level of education. By looking at these apps I can use it as influences for interactivity and improve upon their design and interactivity.

Project Evaluation

Critically evaluating your final media project against the agreed requirements and parameters. Answer following questions:

Introduce the project in your words List five strengths and five weaknesses in your final design Was there a theme for the design ideas? Can you describe it? Can you reference any

influences here? - art movements, designers, media companies/campaigns, etc. What experiments and exploration did you do (what happens if). How did it affect your

development? Find a similar type of design publication - place it next to your own - what

comparisons/difference can you identify? What were the key areas of development in this project? - use your daily reflections to

help you with this Review your proposal - what changed, what developments did you make, did you manage

to complete everything you set out to achieve? What did the client think of your concept? How did that make you feel? What could you do to adapt the work produced to improve and develop it? Is the final work appropriate for the needs of the project? Does it sufficiently answer your

brief? Reflect on your pitch to the board; how did you feel about it before? Did it go better or

worse than you expected? What was the feedback from the client/lecturer? What do you think you could improve next time?
