These are among the many features of the JA BLT practice in Agboy Elementary School which brought the school to the top spot in the first ever Busog, Lusog, Talino National Excellence Award of the Jollibee Group Foundation (JGF). “Our intervention in the school feeding program was complemented by hardwork, creativity and resourcefulness of the principal, feeding coordinator,and the parents,” said Dr. Shirley G. Hampac, JA-CES officer.“Bagging the championship in the national level proves our labor is not in vain,” she further related. Attorney Lorna D. Gellada, JA Administrator, Mrs. Yolanda Peniero, Agboy ES principal, and Mrs. Gemma Espana, Agboy ES feeding coordinator, received the said recognition last May 4, 2015 in the awarding rites done in Crownne Plaza Hotel, Pasig City, Manila. “I am so grateful to the unwavering support of the administration through Atty. Gellada, and to the LGU of Leon through Mayor Rolito Cajilig and the BLT focal person Mrs. Ma. Theresa de los Reyes. Likewise, the help of an NGO such as LESCOFAMPCO represented by Mrs. Marjorie Calagsing has also contributed to the success of the program in Agboy ES,” Dr. Hampac added. As an Area Implementing Partner (AIP), a separate plaque was awarded to JA and was donned to Dr. Hampac in a separate awarding ceremony for implementers of BLT around the country on the next day, May 5. by Mdpn. To preserve and protect the Igang Bay Marine Sanctuary, John B. Lacson Foundation Maritime University- Community Extension Services (Jblfmu-CES) conducted a public consultation on IBMS expansion and sustainability in Nueva Valencia, Guimaras, last March 19, 2015.

JA-CES took over the responsibility of informing and encouraging residents about the benefits that can be brought about by the Igang Bay Marine Sanctuary and the plans of expanding it in different barangays namely: Igang, Dolores, Magamay, Pandaraonan, Sto. Domingo, and Poblacion.

“This joint project aims to preserve and develop the Igang Bay Marine Sanctuary by applying all the necessary means to help protect and maintain the home for all types of fishes,” Dr. Shirley G. Hampac (CES-Officer) said.

Moreover, the undertaking was meant to get the support for the expansion and sustainability of Igang Bay Marine Sanctuary in partnership with GIZ- a German based environmental organization, which funds the project for its development and productivity.

JA Academic Coordinator and Peer Mentoring Program Adviser, served as the resource person as she highlighted the school’s core values in advancing her discussion along with the DepEd core values : Maka-Diyos, Maka-Tao, Maka-Bayan at Maka-Kalikasan (also known as 4M’s).

The activity was participated by 23 teachers and spearheaded by Ms. Edna Dominguez, SNES principal. To make the activity successful, Ms. Janice Camag and Dr. Shirley G. Hampac from the school CES office, helped in facilitating other concerns.

Growth and development of the mangroves planted.

These were the primary goals of the Community Extension Services (CES) volunteers with Ms. Janice Camag and Ms. Novemar Demetillo at the EcoPark, Nueva Valencia, Guimaras on February 14, 2015. The said mangroves were planted by John B. Lacson Foundation Maritime University- Arevalo last January 28, 2014.

The CES student volunteers included Mdpn. Giovanni Cerbaña, Mdpn. John Vianney Colacion and Mdpn. Nomar Raimond Olivar who assisted the monitoring which covered counting of the number of leaves and measuring the heights per plant.

Out of 610 mangroves (propagules) planted, 85% (519) mangroves survived with 15% (91) mortality rate. On the average, the planted mangroves have 18.75 leaves and their average height was 21.42 inches.

One hundred sixty five (165) residents of Sto. Niño Sur, Arevalo availed the medical and dental missions held by the school clinic in collaboration with the Community Extension Services (CES) held at the JBL Hall last May 1, 2015.

Doctor Cynthia Baleña spearheaded the event with some medical and dental doctor volunteers namely, Dr. Sally Ticao, Dr. Carmen Fegarido, Dr. Violie Albarado and Dr. Fatima Temblador. From the CES office, Dr. Shirley Hampac, Ms. Janice Camag, and Ms. Novemar Demetillo also assisted the medical team and the patients.

Furthermore, Mrs. Diosita Dalida and selected student volunteers helped in determining patients’ vital signs and in dispensing medicines.

To nurture the minds of the students, the Community Extension Services (CES) spearheaded a forum regarding volunteerism, leadership and HIV at the school library, A p r i l 15, 2015.

Twenty three (23) volunteers joined and tackled three topics with Mrs. Annie Pedregosa as the resource speaker for volunteerism, Dr. Shirley G. Hampac for leadership and Dr. Cynthia Baleña for HIV.

During the activity, a “world cafe” format was used in which participants were grouped into two for leadership and volunteerism in parallel session facilitated by the designated speakers. The discussion on HIV on the other hand, was given by Dr. Cynthia Balena in the plenary session.

As a result, the participants showcased a positive feedback on the assembly which left an impact on their perspectives.

year support of the German-based NGO which also included delineation and remapping of the protected area.

To realize the undertaking, more individuals were involved as surveyors which included six personnel from DENR, one representative from Bureau of Aquatic Resources, and one from GENRO.

To exhibit the gardening skills of pupils, Community Extension Services (CES) conducted a vertical gardening contest at Sto. Niño Sur Elementary School.

Fifteen participants were judged by Mrs. Cristy Cangrejo of Human Resource office; Midshipmen Marjo Española, Nikko Alba, and Garret Tactica of Publication Office; and, Mdpwn. Shan Pearl Marquez, and Mdpn. Danielle Roel Secapuri of Student Executive Council.

The winners were awarded at Sto. Niño Sur Barangay Hall after the gardens were evaluated last February 23, 2015.

Judge Pepito Gellada who is a member of the BOT of JBLF System, Dr. Emely Palomero, Dr. Teresita Paragon, Dr. Shirley Hampac and Mrs. Rohena Miranda who are Jblfmu-Arevalo department heads, with Mr. Lowe Blanco the Community Extension Services - BLT officer took time to give moral support to the administrator’s visit.

On the other hand, Judge Gellada and Dr. Teresita Paragon donated an amount to their “Piso Mo, Igma Ko” coin bank as the school’s way of sustaining the daily lunch feeding to the undernourished kids.

This endeavor was to encourage more members of academic community to get involved in this university’s function. It was also a part of the exposure trip of Jblfmu-Arevalo employees in communities served by the university.

Belonging to the estimated 3000 delegates all over Western Visayas, John B. Lacson Foundation Maritime University-Arevalo took part in the celebration of the National Arbor Day 2015 held in Sitio Tabionan, Bucari, Leon, Iloilo last June 25, 2015.

Jblfmu-A joins National Arbor Day Celebrationfrom Tabionan Campsite to Mansiga Viewing Deck that offers panoramic view of Bucari’s mountain ranging as far as Iloilo City to Guimaras Island.

Other participants such as the Local Government Unit (LGU), members of other government agencies and organizations, NGO’s,

schools and private entities participated in the mountain climbing activity.

Both the LGU’s and NGO’s signed the Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) as a symbol of their commitment in taking care of the mountain by annually joining the activity.
