From the Pastor’s desk There are two things I want to call your attention to

this Lord’s Day.

First – Catholic Schools Week begins today, and it is an opportunity not only to celebrate the value of what Catholic education has meant to the Catholic Church in the USA as well as our local community, but also it al-lows us to say “thank you” to the many people who sacri-fice so much for the gift of a Catholic education. We ac-knowledge parents who sacrifice to provide the financial support for their children. We also salute teachers, staff and administration who often work well below the sala-ries of their public school colleagues to provide the faith-based environment for children to learn. And we recog-nize the people who are good stewards to our parish, because your contributions allow us to make up the dif-ference that tuition and fees do not cover. May God bless you all.

Second – The Year of Consecrated Religious Life draws to a conclusion this week in the Universal Church. The final celebration for our Diocese will take place to-night (January 31) at the 5:00 p.m. Mass. The men and women religious of the Catholic Church provide priceless service and witness to the Gospel in communities and institutions throughout the world. I ask you to pray for them today, particularly our own Sisters of St. Joseph and all the religious communities serving in the Diocese of St. Augustine. The theme of the year has been “Wake up the World.” Hopefully, our eyes have been opened to the many ways that these holy men and women, so often, are unheralded servants of the Gospel among us.

Love, Father Tom

Mission Statement of the Cathedral Parish St. Augustine, Florida

We are Christ’s eyes, ears, mouth, hands,

and feet –

SENT OUT

to do justice, especially for the poor and

oppressed,

to minister to the needs of the community,

to be faithful stewards of God’s creation

– awakening faith among the hopeless,

and promoting life even within the culture

of death.

National Catholic Schools Week begins January 31 National Catholic Schools Week will be observed beginning this Sunday, January 31. There are over 6,500 Catholic elementary and secondary schools in the USA. Did you know among all secondary schools, Catholic schools graduate 99% of their students and 85% are admitted to 4-year colleges and universities? That’s far and away the best of any school system! How about this? If all Catholic schools closed today, the cost to the federal and state governments would be in excess of $24 Billion – and that’s just the cost of class-room teaching, not in the additional buildings that would be neces-sary! Florida ranks sixth in the nation with the highest number of students enrolled in Catholic schools – California and New York top the list. Let’s support the Catholic schools of our area – Cathedral Parish Early Education Center, Cathedral Parish School and Saint Joseph Academy.

Operation Rice Bowl Each year during Lent, Catholic Relief Ser-vices (CRS) invites Catholics to participate in Operation Rice Bowl. This year will mark the 41st consecutive year for this pro-gram in the Catholic Church of the USA. Your participation in Operation Rice

Bowl by eating one simple meal each week in your home and do-nating the money saved into the “rice bowl” allows us to be in soli-darity with the millions across the globe who are hungry and often go without food. Your contributions are used by CRS to assist the vulnerable in poor overseas. Rice bowls are available today at the entrances of the church as you leave Mass. Please consider partici-pating in this simple, very effective program to address starvation and poverty in the world.

Bishop’s Annual Stewardship Appeal

One Faith, One Family: Joyfully Sharing Our Gifts in Mercy with Others

By now, the families of the Cathedral Parish have received infor-mation and a pledge card for the 2016 Bishop’s Annual Stewardship Appeal (BASA). For those who have already completed the pledge card and mailed it back, thank you for once again supporting this appeal. Next Sunday, at all Masses in the Cathedral Parish, you will be given the opportunity to pledge to this year’s appeal.

Your gift to the BASA provides crucial funding to the four re-gional offices of Catholic Charities, to support of our seminarians as well as financial assistance to the Catholic schools of the Diocese of St. Augustine. This year’s diocesan goal is $3.25 million. Won’t you help Bishop Estevez to provide for the needs of many that the gift of God’s mercy may reach them?

Tuesday, February 2 Feast of the Presentation

of the Lord As part of Catholic Schools Week, there will be a Procession with the Most Blessed Sacrament following the 9:00 a.m. School Mass on Tuesday. You are invited to join the students and staff of Cathedral Parish School as we take the Blessed Sacrament in proces-

sion around the Plaza in downtown St. Augustine and return to the Cathedral for Benediction.

Solemn Vespers will be celebrated at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb-ruary 2 in the Cathedral. At this liturgy, the traditional blessing of candles will take place. You are invited to bring candles used in your devotions at home to be blessed at this liturgy.

Blessing of Throats Wednesday, February 3

Wednesday, February 3 is the feast day of Saint Blaise and is the traditional day for the blessing of throats in the Catholic faith.

The blessing will be offered following the 7:00 a.m. Mass. There will also be a Liturgy of the Word with the Blessing at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday evening.

We need to keep learning about our faith. I recently discovered that "uCatholic.com" is a great web resource. I had

only been using it occasionally for Mass readings; then this month I became unhappy with the Saints of the Day I encountered on other sites. This month in particular was full of seemingly obscure saints from the early Church. uCatholic has a great section on saints. Because they keep them mostly to-gether for the current month and the biographies are more detailed than usual for a general Catholic site, one gets a better feeling of who we are remember-ing and celebrating.

This month's saints included four Doctors of the Church: Saints Gregory, Basil, Hilary, and Thomas Aquinas. Among the early saints celebrated were Saints Timothy and Titus, Bishops, along with St. Peter the Hermit and St. Anthony of the Desert. There were a number of martyrs from the early Church who died for their faith from all over the Roman empire, including St. Agnes, St. Sebastian, St. Vincent of Saragossa, and three Roman Virgins; and the Middle Ages martyrs St. Bernard and Companions, followers of St. Francis of Assisi. We can't forget St. Francis de Sales, a great evangelist and leader of the Counter-Reformation. In the Americas, we celebrated Saints Elizabeth Ann Seton, Bishop John Neumann, Marguerite Bourguoys, and Marianne Cope. Just encountering these saints, hearing of their total dedication to Jesus along with all they accomplished in their often short lives, can be inspiring for us modern day believers.

I invite you to check out this website and take advantage of their emails and free apps. Besides saints, there are daily Mass readings, prayers, the complete Bible, worldwide Catholic News, blogs, tweets from Pope Francis, timely articles, and my favorite section, Apologetics, which is part of evangeli-zation. The Apologetics (Defense of the Faith) section is particularly good as a source for providing answers to questions posed by relatives and friends chal-lenging our Faith. It's never too early or late to learn. You have to know your Faith to defend it!
