Course Objectives & Goals

1. To perform accounting computations accurately at the Accounting 234 level.2. To prepare a master budget.3. To analyze and interpret cost accounting reports, i.e. cost of production and variance analysis reports.4. To prepare cost accounting reports, i.e. cost of production and variance analysis reports in both job order

and process systems.5. To apply the principles of cost accounting and cost behavior to decision making.6. To analyze and interpret non-routine business decisions using a variety of managerial accounting tools,

i.e. C-V-P analysis, differential cost analysis, present and future value.7. To develop an awareness of the differences between managerial accounting and financial accounting in

the U.S. and abroad.

Managerial Accounting is an upper level accounting course. Expect to review managerial accounting topics such as cost analysis, break even analysis, differential analysis, job costing, activity-based costing, pricing, variances, budgeting and more from ACC 232. We will further explore these topics in the context of business cases. These are situations to consider that can and do take place in the real world. The goal this semester is for Managerial Accounting to come alive and develop genuine meaning for you as you consider what it takes to be a part of a dynamic management team for a prosperous, successful business.

JetNet Forum

You can earn a maximum of 10 forum points per week in the forum, 2 points per forum post. Your active involvement in the forum will directly correlate to how well you do with this online class. Use the forum regularly and frequently. I would recommend that you check in every day or two to see what’s happening, what people are saying and to gauge where you are with your work. I will be posting a lot and will give lots of feedback. This is where our class happens. Posting within six hours of the weekly deadline will result in zero points. The forum is for all of us to talk and work together. Posting at the last minute is not productive for you or for the class. Post early and often. Forum posting is due by Monday 6:00 PM each week.

Chapter 0 Start Up Assignments

To succeed with our online Managerial Accounting, you need to know the basics on how to use CengageNOW. A little review on accounting will be good too. Chapter 0 assignments include sections including an Intro to CengageNow and Success with Accounting. You can earn a maximum of 10 points. Chapter 0 assignments are due on our first due date, Monday 9/9/2019.

CengageNow Text

For each chapter, there is a reading link in CengageNOW for the ebook version of our textbook. Click to open and explore in MindTap format. Some students will be using the ebook version only, and this is how you access the textbook. Many students like to use the book while working for reference and support. This is an area where you have full control and access to the ebook throughout the course. This section is optional and not graded.

CengageNow Adaptive Learning (Quiz & Videos)

You can earn a maximum of 10 quiz points per chapter by completing the Adaptive Learning section in CengageNow. When you click to open, you will be prompted to take a quiz. After the quiz, you can continue learning, review instructional videos and re-take quiz questions section by section to improve your score. If you’ve already got it, you don’t need to do much more. If you need more help, you can get help, learn more and improve your results. Go for it and go for 100% in the Adaptive Learning section. The Adaptive Learning Quiz is due by Monday midnight each week.

CengageNow Homework

You can earn a maximum of 10 homework points per chapter by completing the online chapter homework at CengageNow. After completing the Adaptive Learning section, move on to the homework. Use all of your resources such as JetNet forum, text and videos as you work on the homework each week. The homework will prepare you for the original Excel homework and the exams. CengageNow Homework is due by Monday midnight each week.

Original Excel Homework

We will prepare traditional, formal accounting work in Excel, similar to what you would see in the workplace. We will complete one substantial problem per chapter. Refer to the syllabus schedule for specific Excel homework problems assigned. Refer to the weekly forum for suggestions, hints and sometimes check figures too! 10% of your Original Excel homework score is based on your presentation and use of Excel. Excel Homework is due by Monday midnight.

Exams

There will be 2 opportunities for exam points. Instead of traditional exams, we will complete the “Integrative Exercise” projects included in the textbook and in CengageNOW.

Mid-term Exam = Integrative Exercises on pp 207

Final Exam = Integrative Exercises on pp 574

Use Excel to organize and document your work. Take time to demonstrate your best presentation and formatting skills in Excel. Use the Forum to support and check your work with these challenging Integrative Exercises. We will discuss these in detail. Submit your final answers in CengageNOW. Submit your Excel supporting work in JetNet. Exams are due by Monday midnight of each exam week.

Projects

During our exam weeks, instead of an additional chapter, we will do two things.

Mid-Term Project: During mid-term week, each student will select a chapter from the textbook not covered in our class to review and present to the class. (1) Select any chapter from 11 to 20. Report your chapter to the instructor at the beginning of the course. (2) Prepare a one-page executive summary of the key points from the chapter and upload in the forum for 20 points. You are welcome to submit exhibits and samples to support your one-page executive summary. (2) Prepare a short 3-minute video to share with the class in the forum for 30 points. Share what you discovered in your chapter including highlights and examples. (50 points total) Projects are due by Monday midnight of each exam week.

Final Project: During Final Exam week, each student will compile a portfolio of course topics. (1) Review all chapter reviews presented by students previously submitted for the mid-term project and prepare your own summary portfolio of the entire course including all 20 chapters. Include a cover page and an executive summary page for each one of the 20 chapters. Yes, you will need to complete your own summary for chapters 1-10. You are welcome to include additional examples and exhibits. (50 points total) Projects are due by Monday midnight of each exam week.

Extra Credit

Complete the final Integrative Exercises activity of our textbook on pg 1088. Complete in Excel demonstrating your best presentation and formatting skills in Excel. You are welcome to complete part of all of this project for 40 total possible additional course points. Due by Sunday 10/20/2019.

Due Dates, Late Policy, Grading PolicyAll assignments are due by Monday midnight. Note that midnight in JetNet is 11:55 PM. All assignments and projects must be completed and submitted before their scheduled deadlines. If you turn in your work past the due date, you will not receive points. If you are experiencing a genuine emergency such as a death in the family, find yourself admitted to the hospital, find yourself in jail, etc.; please contact me as soon as possible. Feeling busy and overwhelmed with college, family and life is not an emergency (although it certainly does feel overwhelming). Grading is completed with points posted to JetNet within 24-48 hours.

Technology issuesIf you have trouble with your JC login or other computer issues, please contact the JC Solution Center at 517-796-8539. When e-mailing your instructor, please include your first and last name and put “ACC 234” in the subject line. Always save and back-up your files. Have a back-up technology plan in case your regular computer has problems. Please ask questions and get help early with any concerns you may have including technology problems.

CaveatThis syllabus is not a contract: it is a plan for the course. Each course and each student group is unique. We may do more or less than is outlined above. Total points in the course may be altered to reflect the dynamics of our class.
