Well water outside. 1904-1916 Ferrin game warden, night marshall would not work for democrat. 1903 brought first hay? binder into area. Two Ocean Lake and Emma Metilda Lakes 30 year battle for water rights from Sugar Company in 1930's. Mr. Shepard spearheaded issue to save lakes. Bill Kelly- founded Kelly. Brought 1st car up Hoback Canyon. Al Lastuson brought another car over teton Pass. 1914 or 1915 tried to bring cars over the pass. The road was sooo bad that they sold the Fords in Jackson to Speaker and friends for first car dealer.(names of 1st owners). early car dealerships. First Hospital being built and Dr Huff. Justice of the peace 1914-1917. Court House Locations.

Mr.Frederic Bottler's son. Frederic Bottler- hunting guide. ranch located 4 miles S. of Emmerit (sp?) native of summiit county Ohiob. April 10th 191843 sn of enrst (manufactured brick and tile) and catherine Bottler emmigtrated to america in 1838 from Bavaria.they had six sons- three served in the civil war, and five daughters. story of how Bozeman, MT. Frederic Bottler joined USGS. was named. story of shooting a bear with a 22 caliber gun. Also, hunted another bear when he was younger who he shot, while hunting with his brother-in-law, but did not kill. Buttler fathers teachers his son about the proper time of year to kill a bear. Later trapped another bear. remembers buffalo bones scattereed all over the valley when he was a boy. Brother -in-law sold pablo herd buffalo to Canada when he lived in Falthead, MT. 30 Bison could never be rounded up and moved. talks about American Indinas running the buffalo over the cliffs- he found many arrowheads in his property. Quality really good. Great quotes about hardship and how they coped- but about colorado as a youth. dad was wanderer continusly moved. 1882 moved to CO. - looking for homestead. (info on mining camps in North Fork of Grand River Colorado). Colorado taught him to appreciate wildlife. 15 years old only sister died at 14. Trapping as a child for income. (father was not game hunter or trapper). Lee Tillman moved to colorado- stayed with them for two seasons. They made straight shingles. Charlie taught Lee how to trap. Grizzlies were referred to as "Silver Tips". They did not trap grizzlies at that point.Details about building and bateing a bear trap. Henry rifle info. Mussel loading rifle info. copy of tape of charlie hendrick bear storygiven to recorder by Dudley Hayden. Then some stories told by Dudley. Ranger in GTNP - 2nd premanent ranger. Dudley Hayden and Charlie Hendrick were best friends.Dudley is talking about Charlie came to Jackson hole via Teton Pass 1897. Charlie shot a deer out of season and came over the pass and met John Cherry/Karey(?). John was a game warden and scolded him for poaching. John later asked Charlie to help them track a mountain lion cub in late fall with 8" of snow. Dogs treed mountain lion. The men asked Charlie to climb tree and knock cat out of tree. Cat was spitting at him and he hit lion out of tree with a club. They were angry because Charlie had killed the cat. Story of trap line laid out by Charlie as a child in Colorado. 1929 Dudley Hayden and Otis Murie were in yellowstone doing research. Had Venison chunk hanging outside of cabin door (1 foot of snow). Not half eaten, 2:30am in morning cabin was shaking. Half awake bear must be eating meat, flung door open and bear was right there pulling meat off spike. Bear backed off but about 40 feet away he stopped and fired at bear not aiming. He never thou

Mary Chamber in Ogden Utah July 11th 1972 life of her mother Haddie Norilla Hill Hedrick dob Dec 9th 1885 . Moved to Teton Valley (Darby Idaho) went to Fox Creek Canyon- established camps. 8:00 Hardship of first winter - Dyptheria was spreading across country - children became ill. Survived winter and dyptheria. Moved back to Darby area after 1st spring. Uncle Nick Wilson lived over the hill - 10:00 Dan Hill (who had two wives one house in Idaho one in wyoming) and Nick Wilson became life long friends - 1893 was the year range. By 1900 Norilla went to Jackson to work - it took her 2 days. Just past 15, on wagon loaded with whisky barrels - 13:50. Mr and Mrs John Anderson owned the Jackson Hotel. She lived and worked for 2 years for them. Norilla was a good dancer. She met Charlie Hedrick while working in Jackson. May 30th 1904 they were married in St Anothony ID. Lived in Jackson - 20:00 funny quote about tetons not being seen until the dudes came to the valley. Nice description about tetons also story about fishing. 1909 diary inserts 22:00. Story of raising children, and other daily activities. 3

Feb 11 1966 Starts in the middle of a story- July 19 1896 - cattle brought to ? 2 wagons with two horses-7 head died on the route…had to replace horses. Jim Budge and his wife, Mr. McBride and his wife (she wrote journals). July 9th 1896 arrived at Menors ferry. Tried to "jew" them down on ferry price. Camped at Ditch Creek then the Gros Ventre. Then moved down and started to build house by butte that became the homestead. Wintered just north of Jackson first year. The family came from Rock? Oregon. Crossed Teton Pass - quite the feate- broke the wagon on the way down by tieing trees to the back. This took several days to get done.12:00. They all fished Phelps Lake on the way to Menors. The came through Victor on the 4th of July 1896. There was just some cabins. "they furnished the parade that day- coming through Victor". Worked for Bob Miller feeding cattle on the refuge (prior to elk refuge)...chased the elk off the refuge. (great elk sound) 15:15. Story about Mrs. Miller. Moved in with Millers- speaker added a room onto the house - used tomato cans for eve shingling. (south room is Henry's room).

from S.C. then Farmington Utah, then teaching job in Wilson Wyoming at 21 years old. Traveled in winter from ashton to victor to teton pass to jackson hole- stayed at Ward hotel. Didn't have teaching permit abe ward ben lynn ed woodward were conflicted on whether she should teach...it was a joke. Lived with Dr and Daisey Steel in Jackson for 3 weeks. Toured Yellowstone in 1911. Never took the job in Wilson. Went to Fort Hall Indian reservation to teach. Met Raymond Kent the year before she went to Fort Hall. They were engaged to be married for April 1st, but she didn't tell anyone so no one showed up including the groom. (he was stuck in a blizzard). Married in Farmington Utah later that month. Came back to Jackson after finishing teaching to run a fairy across the snake...by Frank Williams place (25:55). Raymond chose Lost Creek area for home steading. Mr Love J Bar L ownes it currently. Brother Joe cut lumber and tried to float it down the river. It did not work. Brother was a horse breeder. News business, at Jenny lake when first movie shot in 1920's. Several years in a row, few left, after that 10-12 day regulations.

taped at 310 Canyon Ave Lander Wy. 1924 1st - 4 th trips up Grand Teton- showing photos. Warren H Bonney, Paul Petzoldt and the comentator who did not say his name. It was a very large group 30 people or so. They brought horses in to bradley canyon (not current name). Mr Owen had hired Paul but group was just completely unorganized. Mr Owen did not go his heart rate was to high. Paul went with others - Jib Scott's first trip. Another trip took horses up death canyon to alaska basin to middle teton so Mr Owen could make it without having the elevation problems- top of Grand on Mr. Owens 64th birthday. Then Mrs Lucas wanted to go because Mr Owen made it. Camped in cave with Mrs Lucas. Talking about argument between a few people. Game Warden and Ike - game warden killed Ike several years later - they never got along. Trips in 1924 were his first climbs and seeing the Tetons. History of early climbs in the Tetons. Petzoldt did not follow same route up tetons. Mr Owen was in town and looked them up. -

Quinn A Blackburn - Geologist. Tape for Mr. Bonney Grand Teton Climb 1923 by Quinn Blackburn and two friends. Topo Maps enticed him. Friends: Mr Delap and Mr Depairel both college students he met in montana while at school. Mr Depairel was not a climber. Had to buy a car for 75.00 a model T Ford. They split the cost of the car. Left Missoula and did a loop and then hit the rain storms and the roads were all mud. Later part of August 1923. From Cody they came into the park and did the loop. Went to the top of Mount Washburn to check out the car. Arrived in Moose Wy. 4pm during rain. Mr Magnus postmaster did not think anyone had made it to the top but that a party was camped at Jenny Lake then that were going to climb the grand. Spokesman Mr Ellingwood - from Northwestern University he thinks. Quinn told them they were going to climb the grand the next day. Maybe they could join forces. W.C. is clear - interviewer not so much 16 sept Lucas place - slim interviewing by mrs Fabian. Came through Jackson to Yellowstone in 1912. Came back to Jackson to live in 1921. Working for Hudson Coal minds in Lander Wyoming. Hotel Promotion- bringing Dudes into the Valley. Worked for Lander-Yellowstone Bus Line- 1929 W. Lewis johnson bought sargent place. Mr Burl purchased in 1935 he has been working since. Lander "where rails end and trails begin" (bus ran for 6-8 years). Johnson was Hoover Vaccum company. Married at Fort Washakie, in 1929. Rev. Roberts the oldest missionary in the country. Rev. Roberts buried Sacaguewa-in area by his mission. Sargent was there in 1912 W.C. met him then- killed himself in 1913. Place is still called the "sargent" place...even though Mr Burl ownes. Cunningham family- graves are under buck fence on little hill. Pierce came into valley around 1886 (maybe 1895). 2 forts on the cunningham property. (there are two pits where they think the forts stood). Elmer Nelson is a good source for knowing where other buildings stood. (former head of Elk Refuge). 1867
