February 5, 2015

Dear Parents,

Last week Dr. Dance sent a phone message to everyone regarding the BCPS

Stakeholders Survey. The annual Stakeholder Satisfaction Survey is an opportunity to let

us know what you think about this school and about Baltimore County Public Schools.

The survey takes about five minutes to complete, is confidential, and will be

available in several languages. It has also been customized so that there are different (but

related) questions for school-based staff, parents, students, community members, and

central office staff. If you are both a BCPS parent and a BCPS staff member or if you are

a BCPS parent with children in more than one school, you are encouraged to take the

survey more than once to reflect your different experiences in those different roles or

with those different schools.

The survey will be available at the BCPS Web site (www.bcps.org) from January

30 through February 28. Please take time to complete the online survey using your phone,

tablet, or computer, or let us know if you need to come to the school to take the survey.

We will do whatever is necessary to make sure you have the opportunity to participate.

Taking the survey is a quick way to demonstrate your support for BCPS and to

help us meet our goal of preparing and graduating globally competitive students!

Focused on Quality Committed to Excellence

We will be using the data from the Stakeholders Survey instead of the annual

Jacksonville survey. Last year we had nearly 200 parents complete the JES survey, so we ask that all of you please complete the new survey. Data pertaining to Jacksonville will be useful to the Site Base Committee as they continue to be the governing committee for the school.

With all the late openings (sorry!) we are having major traffic jams in the

morning. Please move up to the principal’s space to unload your car. Then we can have 3 cars unload at the same time. Most of the time one of the administrators has been outside to facilitate this and we appreciate the words of encouragement and cooperation shown.

Parent pick-up has somehow grown exponentially. Parent pick-up was

created for those students not assigned a bus or for the occasional need to get your child earlier than they are dropped off at home due to an appointment. We highly encourage all parents whose children are assigned a bus to have them ride the bus home. This would greatly reduce the traffic jams occurring on the upper parking lot.

In addition, a “No Parking” sign is being installed on the right side of the

parking lot adjacent to the posts. People who park or stop there are impacting the flow of traffic in and out of the lot. Thank you for your understanding.

Report cards are being distributed today. If you have any questions or

concerns, please set up a conference with your child’s teacher.

Sincerely,

Debbie Glinowiecki Nancy Aumiller

Dear JES families and staff,

What a winter – sending warm wishes your way! Jacksonville Jets can circle the globe (without any weather delays, we hope!) at INTERNATIONAL NIGHT on February 6th (7:00-9:00pm at JES). This biennial event, chaired by Jassi Ahuja ([email protected]), will feature sixteen countries with tastings, displays, and activities. On stage we’ll have terrific cultural performances: UMD Terrapind Bhangra, U.S. Martial Arts Academy, Parkville HS Steel Drum Band, Nepali and flamenco dance, Keur Khaleyi African Dance Company and our own JES 2nd Graders! This celebration is free to all, thanks to generous families, staff, and your PTA donations – I hope to see you there! Students: your passport is a homework pass.

Kudos to all of our 5th graders, Mrs. Tice, the dedicated volunteers, and especially 5th grade social studies teacher Mrs. Kelch for a wonderful PATRIOT DAY in January! This event, unique in the county to JES, gave students a chance to learn about the Revolutionary War and present their new knowledge with creative project displays and dioramas as well as a moving assembly showcasing patriotic music, recitations, and an extremely large flag from Fort McHenry – wow!

JES is having its first COLLEGE & CAREER DAY on February 20th. Family members are cordially invited to visit classes that morning for brief talks about their careers and education. See the sign-up link in this newsletter.

Your BOOK DONATIONS are appreciated through Feb. 6th and will be sent to Hawthorne ES and the Ark Preschool with bookmarks from our Outreach Kids Club as a Valentine treat. Also, get SPIRITWEAR sweatpants, hoodies, tees, drawstring bags, yo-yos, and keychains while supplies last and support the PTA!

It’s time to send in all of your BOX TOPS, LABELS for Education, and TYSON Project A+ labels. Enter our Cinemark Movie Ticket Prize Drawing by sending in the attached form with your Box Tops by Feb. 6th for a chance to win with attached box tops form!

One final reminder...our feedback on the BCPS Stakeholder Satisfaction Survey online this month is deeply valued by JES and BCPS. This is a key opportunity for parents and staff to help shape our children’s education. Thank you in advance for making the time for this!

Warm regards,Whitney Leber [email protected]

Spencer and Brody, along with several other JES students then delivered the blankets, treats and food to the Defenders of Animal rights on Old York Road in Phoenix on a day off from school. They spent the day cuddling and playing with the animals in the shelter. Way to go boys! That was a really KIND thing to do!

If you know of a JES student that has done something extra nice, please nominate them for the Spotlight on Kindness by contacting Alicia Matesa at [email protected].
