A R T I S T S T A T E M E N T Jake was born on the outskirts of a widely respected and involved Native American
family from Massachusetts. He feels that he is forever occupying the cultural space
between his Native Heritage and his traditional American upbringing. His work is
primarily a study of visual culture, a representation of himself in that emotionally
complicated space. His paintings depict colourful and powerful portraits that are
dismantled and pieced together creating artworks that combine cultural pattern
work with contemporary design. It’s hard to say whether his process brings him
closer to his Native Heritage or merely cements him in this place of emotional and
visual limbo.
A R T I S T B I O Jake has been making work under the name MakerJake since early 2015. Originally
the name was a mask to hide his social media from his students, he's a visual art
educator, but it has since developed into an artistic identity. Since the evolution of
MakerJake he has begun an extremely successful Instagram campaign, taken part
in many group exhibitions, several solo shows, sold artwork worldwide, and
curated/organized several exhibitions with artists nationwide.
