THE PASTOR’S EPISTLE
“GIFTS FOR A KING”
Jesus was born in the town of Bethlehem, in Judea, during the reign of King Herod. At about that time, some astrologers
from Eastern lands arrived in Jerusalem asking, “Where is the newborn King of the Jews? For we have seen his star in far-
off Eastern lands, and have come to worship him.” Entering the house where the baby and, Mary his mother, were they
threw themselves down before him in worship. Then, they opened their presents and gave him gold, frankincense and
myrrh. When they returned to their own land, they didn’t go through Jerusalem to report to Herold, because God had
warned them in a dream to go home another way. Matthew 2:1-2, 11-12 L.B.
As the old Bing Crosby song says, “It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas, everywhere I go.” Having just celebrated
Thanksgiving, we now have less than four weeks before we celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ.
As we read the Christmas Story as recorded in the Gospel of St. Matthew, we once again are reminded of the three gifts
presented to baby Jesus. These gifts are very important not only in material terms, but also in their spiritual/symbolic
nature. The first gift was that of gold. This, the most precious of all metals, is a gift worthy of presenting to a King. This
symbolizes that Jesus Christ is the King of Kings and Lord of Lords. The Bible teaches in Revelation 19:15 that someday
he will return to earth as a victorious King who will rule with a rod of iron. Jesus is not coming back as a meek baby to
die again, but as a victorious KING!
The second gift was frankincense which is an incense used by priests. This gift symbolizes the fact that Jesus Christ is
the one true High Priest of both Heaven and Earth. (Hebrews 7:22-28)
The third gift was myrrh which is an incense or perfume used to anoint a dead body. This gift symbolizes that Jesus
Christ was going to die for the sins of mankind and is the only Savior of the world. (Romans 5:6, Romans 6:23, II
Corinthians 5:21, Ephesians 2:13, Hebrews 9:12-14, I John 2:1)
Three gifts were given to the baby Jesus by the Wise Men. Each gift symbolizes something about the nature and ministry
of Jesus Christ.
In the midst of all the hustle and bustle this time of the year don’t forget that Jesus is the “reason for the season.” Keep
Christ in Christmas!

CHRISTMAS CARD EXCHANGE 2019
Beginning Sunday, December 1st and ending Sunday, December 22nd.
Jacob’s Church will again have a Christmas Card Exchange. Mailboxes will be set up in the West Vestibule. This is an excellent way of saving postage for the cards you would send to your friends, neighbors and relatives in the Jacob’s Church Family.
Please take note to the following:
1. When addressing your envelopes, please also put your name on the top
left-hand side of the envelope. This will be one way we can be sure that all the cards will be delivered in time for Christmas.
2. Please put all your envelopes in alphabetical order by last name. This will make it easier to sort the envelopes faster.
3. Also, when leaving Worship Service, please stop and check the table in the parlor area (see note below) for any cards that were not delivered earlier.
After the cards are sorted, they will be distributed to the congregation before Church starts at 10:15 am. If the cards are not all distributed before church starts, please take note: After the Worship Service---check the table in the parlor area for any cards that are addressed to you.
Thank You So Much For Your Help In Making
The Christmas Card Exchange So Successful!
