EARLY LIFE Jacques was born in

1491 He grew up in Brittany’s

northern coast Jacque liked to spend

the summers on the coast line of Brittany with his father fishing

Jacques joined Giovanni de Verrazano who worked for France

He grew up studding navigation skills

IMPORTANCE OF EXPLORATION

King Francis 1 sent Cartier on his first voyage over seas

He wanted to claim new land for France and find a northwest passage to Asia

ABOUT THE EXPLORATION

Cartier took off with a crew of 61 men and two ships

April 20,1534 about 3 weeks later the crew reached the rocky coast of North America

Cartier had to take another trip to see more. He also got caught in a horrible snow storm.

RESULTS He discovered

Newfoundland on his second voyage

He also uncovered what is now known as Montreal in 1535

Cartier claimed Canada for France

CONCLUSION Cartier died in 1557 in

St-Malo due to old age He is known for his

discoveries We now have a good

connection with Canada (my dad says a lot of Canadians now speak French and they play lots of hockey)
