Jacqueline’s mother started teaching her the cello but soon decided that Jacqueline needed a better teacher. At the age of ten, Jacqueline became a pupil of William Pleeth (a famous performer best known as a chamber musician) at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London and won a international competition. At the age of 12, she was performing in concerts for the BBC. Jacqueline furthered her studies with Pablo Casals in Switzerland, Paul Tortelier in Paris and Mstislav Rostropovich in Russia.

In 1971 when Jacqueline was only 26, a mysterious ailment affected her cello playing as she began to lose sensitivity in her fingers. Eventually, she was soon diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis and retired in 1973. Although she taught a little and occasionally appeared in public, she was never able to play the cello anymore.

The disease caused her health to deteriorate and led to her death on October 19,1987 at the age of 42. Her husband was with her when she died. Jacqueline left her instrument to Yo-yo Mah.
