JAC TION LARGEST JAC ISRAEL TRIP EVER Thanks to you more than 40 Students had a life changing Israel experience this summer Vol. 2, No. 2 - Fall 2011 www.myjac.org Thanks to you, more than forty students had the opportunity to explore, learn and grow in Israel this summer. The Challenge Your support enabled hundreds of students experience meaningful Judaism on campus this past year. With nearly a 300% increase in Shabbat attendance, our goal was to bring a large group of these students to Israel. The JAC staff worked tirelessly to recruit students who were willing to take the plunge. Not Your Typical Israel Trip This wasn’t your run-of-the- mill Israel trip. A great mix of touring, learning and Israel advocacy training made this one unique experience. The students didn’t simply visit and see Israel. They lived Israel. The daily Torah study made everything more meaningful. Meeting people who live and breath Judaism had a profound impact on them. The Israel advocacy training gave them the confidence they need to represent Israel on campus. This well rounded trip provided a perspective that helped the students connect to Judaism in new ways. University of Arizona undergraduate David Campbell explained, “The JAC Israel trip was the first trip where I not only felt a connection to the land and the people of Israel but also to myself as a Jew.” The students repeatedly mentioned how meaningful it was that they got to spend so much time with the JAC staff. Spending two and a half weeks with their mentors gave them a chance to bond with the staff in ways that otherwise would be impossible. Back on Campus With the new semester underway, the effects of the trip are clear. The participants are learning more, attending Shabbat meals more often and are involved in the Israel advocacy groups on campus. They tell their friends about the amazing time that they had and how this trip had such a positive impact on their lives. Thanks to you, their lives have been changed forever. Yashar Koach! “The JAC Israel trip was the first trip where I not only felt a connection to the land and the people of Israel but also to myself as a Jew” - David Campbell

Thanks to you, more than forty students had the opportunity to explore, learn and grow in Israel this summer. Not Your Typical Israel Trip This wasn’t your run-of-the-mill Israel trip.

This

well rounded trip provided a perspective that helped the students connect to Judaism in new ways. University of Arizona undergraduate David Campbell explained, “The JAC Israel trip was

the first trip where I not only felt a connection to the land and the people of Israel but also to myself as a Jew.” The students repeatedly mentioned how meaningful it was that they got to spend so much time with the JAC staff.

Old Recruiting Records Smashed!More  Than  200  New  Students  Sign  Up  for  JAC  This  Semester

As thousands of students returned from their summer break, JAC got to work recruiting students for the new semester. You can see the info booths on the busy walkways at ASU and at U of A. Thousands of students pass by, seeing us reach out. This allows us to make our presence known on campus and gives us the opportunity to say hello to the many students that know us.The results have been fantastic. More than 200 students signed up for JAC - and we follow up with every single one. We offer every student a chance to meet one of the JAC staff

members over coffee. Who can resist a free drink at Starbucks? This is often the entry point for students. They get to schmooze over a good drink and find that rabbis are more friendly than they ever imagined. As a result of this, more than 125 students decided to meet weekly with a JAC staff member for one-on-one learning. Nearly sixty students are signed up for this semester’s Maimonides Leaders Fellowship, our largest group ever. Thank you!

Student Profile:Brooke SendeleHometown: Irvine, CASchool: ASUMajor: Art

JAC: Please tell us about your Jewish background.

Brooke: I am grateful that my parents decided to tell me that I was Jewish, even though I was raised in a non practicing home. I was unsure though, what being Jewish really meant and didn’t have the opportunity to expand my Jewish knowledge.

JAC: How did you get involved with JAC?

Brooke: I was walking home from class one day when Lolly Moskowitz randomly asked me if I was Jewish. One thing led to the next and now I am a regular at their home on Shabbat.

JAC: How has JAC made an impact on your life?

Brooke: I was satisfied with the way my life was going but now that I began to learn about Judaism everything became so much more meaningful. JAC changed my life in so many ways. I’ve experienced a lot of self growth

JAC: Where is this all going?

Brooke: I’m looking to be part of the Jewish community and become more observant - I’m on the way. I can’t thank JAC enough for showing me this world that I never knew existed.
