Is a very book to to take to a lonely island.

But first I will I will tell you something about the main content of the book.

Stephanie (Valkyrie later on in the book) is 12 years old when her uncle Gordon Edgley, who is an author, dies. A strange person, who turns out to be Skulduggery Pleasant turns up at Gordons funeral. Stephanies uncle gives his whole house to her,his old brook to her aunt and uncle and a very awkward tip to Skulduggery.

After a very rainy day Stephanie decies on sitting in her uncles house and reads his scripts. But late in the night someone breaks a window and starts looking for a key that seems to belong to Gordon. The situation starts to escalate, but then the person from the funeral pops up and scares the intruder away with fireballs and kicks. During the fight he loses parts of his disguise and Stephanie notices, that he is a skeleton and faints.

After waking back up, the living skeleton introduces itself as Skulduggery Pleasant. He explains to Stephanie, that there are Wizards, Alchemists, Necromancers and other magical people and creatures living among us. When Skulduggery notices her magical talent, she becomes his apprentice. It turns out, that Skulduggery works as a detective for the sanctuary

Serpine, an old Alchemist, is looking for the Ancients Scepter. This scepter gives its` owner unimaginable power. The brook seems to be the key to it. In their adventures they meet lots of new people like swordmaster Tanith Low, the librarian China Sorrows and many others. Valkyrie (this is what Stephanie calls herself now) and Skulduggery are aiming to protect the scepter.

Serpine wants the scepter to bring the Faceless Ones back to their dimension. These are like gigantic people that consider humans nothing more than food and slaves. Serpine also wants the Book Of Names to gain full control of the world.

But WHY should you take this book?

Well, in my opinion, this is a book that makes you think. You might start thinking that the story and the world Skulduggery and Stephanie aka Valkyrie live with and in could actually be true. It is also a book you can read more than twice, just because with every reading you can look deeper into the story. So… THAT is why.
