JAGUAR HERITAGE NEWS – NOVEMBER 2013 REPORT After nearly a two month break there is plenty of news to report in this issue covering events past and present, the vehicle collection and also some seasonal offerings! Read on for more… Calendars and Guides: Following the success of last year’s edition, we are pleased to announce that Jaguar Heritage is once again producing a Wall Calendar for the coming year. The 2014 edition features some fabulous new images of 12 cars from the Jaguar Heritage vehicle collection. The high quality studio images, taken during the Summer by our in-house photographer Karam Ram, cover some of the most iconic cars from Jaguar’s long history; these range from a 1932 SS1 Coupé through to the 1992 XJ220.

The calendar is A3 size, printed on high quality 450 gsm white silk art board and spirally bound. The full range of featured vehicles together with a brief description is included on a contact page inside the front cover. The calendars are priced at £20 each incl. Recent Events: Jaguar Heritage gets asked to support a wide range of different external events, classic motor shows, motorsport and club events etc., but it is also increasingly being asked to support Jaguar Land Rover internal events. One of the reasons for this is that as the Jaguar business is expanding, there are more new people coming into the organisation who don’t know very much about the brand and its history. To help these newcomers acquire the necessary ‘green blood’, Jaguar Heritage is often asked to support product familiarisation or training events by providing a selection of classic Jaguars to sit alongside the latest products in the range – underscoring the brand’s long and proud history. Two examples of this over the last couple of months were an Incentive Trip organised by the JLR North America Sales and Service Training team during September and also a recent visit to the UK by ten influential Chinese media. The US “Journey to Excellence” Trip took place over the weekend September 13-15 and the following week, coinciding with the Goodwood Revival. The 100 delegates congregated at the Grand Hotel in Brighton on the Friday and during the afternoon had the opportunity to take heritage rides in a range of classic Jaguars and Land Rovers along the famous sea front. These included the 1969 Jaguar 240, 1973 XJ12 (formerly used by HRH The Queen Mother), 1987 S3 XJ6 4.2 last of the line and the 2002 Daimler Super V8 ex royal relief car.

In the evening there was a gala dinner in the hotel ballroom where the past and present were on display in the form of the famous 1961 E-type 77RW alongside one of the latest F-TYPEs, flanked by the original 1948 Land Rover prototype HUE 166 (known as ‘Huey’) alongside the new Range Rover. On the Saturday, the delegates had the chance to attend the Goodwood Revival and then on

Sunday, after some more sight-seeing, they congregated at the Forest of Arden hotel near Meriden. Another dinner took place in the evening, this time with a James Bond theme. Along with a live band playing Bond film theme tunes, the atmosphere was enhanced by Jaguar Heritage’s XKR from the film Die Another Day and also the Land Rover Defender from the most recent Bond film, Skyfall. During the visit the delegates also had the chance to try out all the latest JLR products and have factory tours at Solihull and Castle Bromwich. More recently in early November, a group of ten Chinese media came over on a reward trip that was initiated by the launch of a special limited edition XJ Cambridge model in China. Based on the XJ Ultimate fitted with the new 3.0 litre supercharged petrol engine, the Cambridge model features some additional bespoke interior trim and a new wheel style as well as ‘Cambridge’ badging. 600 of these are being produced with a price tag of 1.08 million Yuan – about £110,000!

Naturally their trip included a visit to the historic city of Cambridge as well as a day touring the Jaguar Land Rover sites. Jaguar Heritage was asked to provide transport to take the delegates from their factory tour at Castle Bromwich over to Gaydon where they had the chance to try out the latest performance models on the proving ground. Knowing the Chinese fascination with the UK Royal Family, the three vehicles provided included the 1973 Jaguar XJ12 and 1992 Daimler Limousine formerly used by HRH

The Queen Mother as well as the last Daimler Limousine built in 1993. The lunch stop at Hampton Manor provided them with a perfect back drop for photos! London to Brighton Veteran Car Run – November 3: With its unique atmosphere and camaraderie, the London to Brighton Veteran Car Run is an annual favourite. It is staged specifically as a non-profit making veneration and commemorates the Emancipation Run of 14 November 1896, which celebrated the Locomotives on the Highway Act. The Act raised the speed limit for ‘light locomotives’ from 4 to 14mph, and abolished the need for these vehicles to be preceded by a man on foot waving a red flag! The Emancipation Run was first re-enacted in 1927 and has taken place every November since (with the exception of the war years and 1947 when petrol was rationed) making it one of the longest running automotive events. The Royal Automobile Club has managed the Run with the support of the Veteran Car Club since 1930. Jaguar Heritage had agreed to loan two of its veterans to the RAC for this year’s event – the 1901 Lanchester 12hp Tonneau FRW 766 and the 1903 Daimler 14hp Tourer AP221. Both vehicles have done the run many times before but there is always a fair amount of preparation work required to get these centenarians ready for the 60 mile journey from Hyde Park to the Brighton seafront. As reported in the last newsletter, the Lanchester had undergone a partial engine strip down and rebuild in the Jaguar Heritage workshop to get its interesting 2 cylinder, horizontally opposed 4 litre engine running smoothly.

Driving honours on the day for the Lanchester fell to Michael Quinn who is Sir William Lyons’ grandson and also a patron of Jaguar Heritage, with Mike Beasley, one of Jaguar Heritage’s trustees as co-pilot. The Daimler was piloted by Ben Cussons, Chairman of the RAC’s Motoring Committee who was accompanied by three guests. Support was provided by Jaguar Heritage volunteers Eric Baptiste and Geoff Smith together with technician Richard Mason who also provided driving lessons for the Lanchester which has tiller steering and a complicated array of levers for gear changing, braking and engine adjustments!

The weather was kind this year and the run went smoothly for both cars with just some minor re-adjustment being required on the Lanchester mid-journey.

Classic Motor Show – November 15-17 Closer to home was one of the largest events in the calendar for Jaguar Heritage – the Classic Motor Show at Birmingham’s NEC. As in previous years, Jaguar Heritage teamed up with sister company Jaguar Classic Parts on a large stand in Hall 20, surrounded by the stands of all the main Jaguar and Daimler clubs. The star attraction on the stand was one of the C-X75 prototypes – in fact the only one that has been fully finished off in terms of paint and trim. This state-of-the-art hybrid supercar with its 1.6 litre turbo and supercharged 500 bhp engine and twin 195 bhp electric motors is capable of more than 200mph and turns in a sub 3.0 second 0-60mph acceleration – but produces just 90g/km of CO2 emissions.

The C-X75 pulled in the crowds who were able to indulge in a bit of fantasy, but the rest of the stand was more grounded in the real world with a display of classic cars from the Heritage collection that covered the main model ranges for which Jaguar Classic Parts supply spares. However, to add interest to the stand, it was decided to use one or two more unusual examples of some of the models to showcase different uses or adaptations that have been made over the years.

The youngest and oldest cars were conventional – the last of the line 2005 XKR, the well-known 1971 Series 3 E-type coupé WHP 205J and the famous 1950 XK120 NUB 120. In between were an XJS 3.6 Police Car from 1983 (the only one made), a 1985 XJ40 Silverstone Fire tender car and, representing the X300 range, the unique Daimler Corsica 4-seater convertible from 1996. Both the XJS Police Car and XJ40 Fire Car had not been used for a while and needed quite a lot of work to get them running and ready for display. This included replacing the rear brakes on the XJS – which necessitated the removal of the rear axle to access the inboard mounted discs and calipers.

The Club stands once again provided a mouth-watering display of concours condition Jaguars from all eras and the Daimler Lanchester Owners Club stand featured another two cars from the Heritage collection that had been specially prepared for the event. Looking almost like a matched pair, these were a 1953 Daimler Conquest saloon and a 1957 Daimler Conquest drophead coupé - a rare model of which only 234 were built and featuring a rather unique sideways facing single rear seat! This car had also not run for many years and had been abandoned part way through an engine restoration – the cylinder head and other assorted parts were in the boot! The Jaguar Heritage technicians and volunteers rose to the challenge and set about putting it back together and making it run. Thanks are due to Tony Bagley and the DLOC for their assistance in tracking down some crucial parts that were needed to complete the job including a thermostat housing and a tappet screw!

Elsewhere the enormous show, which now spreads across 11 large halls, provided something for everyone. Almost every car brand you could think of was represented somewhere and those looking for parts, accessories, books, merchandise or

automobilia were also well catered for. The Police Car UK Club were also celebrating 60 years of Jaguar police cars with a fine display of six Jaguar police vehicles ranging from a 1969 Mark 2 up to a 1995 XJ6 (X300). To round out a very successful show, the joint Jaguar Classic Parts and Jaguar Heritage stand was given the Best Trade Stand award by Classic Car Weekly which was presented to stand manager Phil Williams, Marketing Manager of Jaguar Classic Parts. Media Film Shoots: Cars from the collection have been in demand once again for various media activities over the last few weeks with two of these coinciding on Tuesday November 12.

The first of these was a film shoot with Quentin Wilson in Stratford-upon-Avon. Quentin is launching a major project for a new TV series entitled the Classic Car Show which will comprise 13 one hour programmes in magazine format that will explore the new and glamorous phenomenon of old cars. The show will be co-presented by Quentin and Jodie Kidd, once described as a “car-mad supermodel”, and will be screened on Sky and syndicated world-wide. To help create a teaser for the series, Jaguar Heritage was asked to bring along the famous Series 1 E-type OTS 77RW to be filmed alongside Quentin’s own Series 1 Coupé 150 ABL – the 22nd right hand drive fixed head to be built and one with a full provenance going back to its first owner, Brigadier Michael Head who was a privateer racer and founding member of the Jaguar Drivers Club. The two cars looked splendid in the early morning light and Quentin did his usual polished job talking effortlessly to the camera. Watch out for more on this venture next year – the TV series promises to be a must for classic car enthusiasts! At the same time, three of Jaguar Heritage’s V12 race cars were being put through their paces by Richard Meaden for a future article in EVO magazine. The venue chosen for the shoot was Blyton Park near Gainsborough in Lincolnshire. This former airfield has been used by the Scunthorpe Motor Sports Club for many years but since 2011 it has been redeveloped by Richard Usher with facilities for corporate, media and club events as well as continuing to be a motorsport venue. One big advantage it has over circuits in more populated areas is no noise restrictions – essential when putting the mighty Jaguar V12 racers through their paces!

Although Richard’s article will focus on Jaguar Heritage’s TWR XJS chassis 007 – which is the car that won both the Spa 24 hour race and the European Touring Car championship for Tom Walkinshaw in 1984 – the other two race cars taken along were the 1974 Group 44 E-type and the 1976 Broadspeed XJ12C. The XJC was making its second appearance of the year having had its first outing at

CarFest North in August following some extensive refurbishment. The CarFest event had

highlighted some fuelling issues caused by a breakdown of the foam in the fuel tank; this has subsequently been flushed out and replaced with new foam, and the car performed well at Blyton. Fame at home and abroad: Moving from the world of events back to Jaguar Heritage’s heartland, it was pleasing to see that our new gallery at the Coventry Transport Museum was featured on the front cover of the October edition of the Association of Independent Museums bulletin. The Association of Independent Museums is the national UK body connecting, supporting and representing independent museums. It was founded in 1977 in response to the growing number of community-based projects seeking to preserve locally and nationally-important heritage, and has grown to become a respected sector group, consulted on national policy and providing a thriving network for members. We were also pleased to welcome three visitors from the Jaguar Club of Denmark during September when they were over for the International Jaguar Spares day at Stoneleigh. Club President Carsten Rojh together with Board members Bent Clausen and Poul Erik Christensen went first to the Jaguar gallery at the Heritage Motor Centre where they were welcomed by Tony Bagley, one of Jaguar Heritage’s volunteers and Vice-President of the Daimler Lanchester Owners Club. After a good look round at Gaydon, the visitors travelled to Coventry where they were given a private tour of the Jaguar Heritage warehouse. This enabled them to see one or two cars of special interest that do not make an appearance very often including the Daimler XJS and the XJ40 Estate car. The Jaguar Club of Denmark produces a bi-monthly magazine called Jaguaria which is sent to its members, and a four page report on the UK visit will appear in the next issue – previewed here! There are around 2,000 Jaguars in Denmark and the Club membership embraces about 70% of these. …and finally – the teasers:

For those of you who didn’t recognise this car which was included in the last Newsletter (and also featured as the ‘Finishing Lines’ image in the November issue of Jaguar World magazine), it is the Bertone Jaguar FT from 1966. Here is a brief history: In 1966 the Italian Jaguar importer, Ferruchio Tarchini, commissioned Carrozzeria Bertone to build a four-seater coupé based on the Jaguar S-Type saloon, which was

displayed on their stand during the 1966 Geneva Motor Show. Initially it was planned to distribute this limited edition model through the Jaguar sales organisation in Italy and abroad, but in the end production was limited just to the show car and one other car. It was called the Jaguar 'FT', after the initials of Ferruchio Tarchini. The Geneva show car is believed still to be owned by the Tarchini family. Predating the landmark XJ6 of 1968, the Bertone design has that familial Jaguar look, with a Mark X style radiator grille and a very luxurious interior. The one production car was based on a Jaguar 420 platform, supplied as a 'CKD' (Completely Knocked Down) kit to be assembled in Italy with Bertone bodywork. Archive records show that the factory supplied seven of these kits to Bertone but only one was completed after the initial show car. It was delivered to a wealthy customer in Madrid and stayed there until it was discovered in a corner of an old garage building a few years ago. It came up for auction at Bonhams Paris sale in February 2012 where it sold for €88,550.

This month’s teaser is probably easier. Clue – it does also have some Jaguar heritage! All will be revealed next month.
