Appeal for Donations JAINA, collaborated in 2009-10 with the Ratna Global Foundation (a well-known India-based Jain charity) and organizations in UK, USA and Africa, to conduct a two-week long mega Mobility Camp in Palitana, Gujarat. The camp benefitted over 28,500 physically challenged and hearing impaired individuals by providing them tricycles ($77 ea), wheelchairs ($68 ea), polio calipers ($29 ea), Jaipur Foot prostheses ($27 ea), hearing aids ($20 ea), crutches ($5 ea) and other aids to improve their quality of life and future through better mobility. This year, Ratna Global Foundation has hosted a Mobility Camp in Palitana on December 23, 2012 – January 6, 2013, as was announced by Manishbhai Mehta at the JSGD Diwali Program. JSGD members are urged to donate to help offset the Camp expenses.

Article on Jainism

This past July, I saw the Jain spiritual leader Gurudev Shri Chitrabanuji speak at the Young Jains of America convention in Tampa, Florida. He was on stage in front of an audience of nearly 700 Jain teenagers. Before he spoke, he was presented with a vegan cupcake to celebrate his 90th birthday. Why a vegan cupcake as a birthday present, I wondered?

The former monk Chitrabanuji graciously accepted his gift and then spoke passionately about the

importance of adhering to the ancient principle of ahimsa or nonviolence in the modern age. He talked

about how a vegan diet, not just a vegetarian diet, is the most nonviolent way to eat. He also

encouraged changing the ancient practice of using ghee, clarified butter, for the ritual of lighting a lamp

in worship. He asked that vegetable-based oil instead be used instead, stressing that society must

unconditionally avoid the violence done by using animal products, such as meat, leather, milk, or butter.

I now understood what the vegan cupcake represented. Given my Western and Christian upbringing, though, I was

amazed to see this monk suggesting a change in a tradition thousands of years old -- and even more amazed that 700

Jain teenagers were listening attentively. The room was silent, and the respect given this prominent figure in the Jain

community was evident. I had come to this event as a guest speaker, and, as an outsider looking in, I could see

something very deep in this simple call for reform. In fact, I believe this call to reform is the very thing that will keep the

Jain community together for another thousand years.

The basic Jain value of nonviolence still demands respect, despite the roaring cultural changes and life-altering

technological innovations of the 21st century. The teen sitting next to me, with spiked hair and ripped jeans, paused from

texting and chatting long enough to hear Chitrabanuji's call for change. This is because at some point in his life he was

taught this principle of nonviolence.

Yet Chitrabanuji was taking these teens to a higher level. He shows how to evolve an ancient religion while still holding

onto its core values. The Jain diet and practice of worship, he suggests, moves closer to the value of nonviolence when

veganism replaces vegetarianism. Promoting the ancient value of nonviolence in this way may actually be the thing that

will help to stop the growing violence among young people in America. If creative or new approaches to ahimsa are

encouraged, then children will become personally involved in deepening and developing the practice of nonviolence in

their own lives.

Certainly, the shootings at Columbine, Virginia Tech, and now Newtown show young people's frustration, anger, and a

desire to take matters into one's own hands. If youth are given opportunities to create their own expressions of

nonviolence from a young age, then perhaps the tools of violence -- so often learned with a video game controller in their

hand -- may be nullified.

Ahimsa or nonviolence may be promoted through its influence on youths' present actions. What might these actions look

like? It could be limiting their exposure to certain movies or video games after realizing its impact on their thoughts and

actions. It could be joining organizations that promote peaceful activities among their peers once they become aware of

how it keeps communities together. It could mean removing dairy from their diet after recognizing the painful effect of

mass milk production on cows. This could indeed lead to them requesting vegan cupcakes on their birthday, as

Chitrabanuji received on his.

It is not the specific action they choose, or even the reason for it, that matters most, however. Every individual will find

their own way and their own expression. What truly matters is the value of ahimsa that lies behind their choice. If values

like ahimsa are taught in creative ways that deepen tradition, the positive impact on children's actions and interactions can

only multiply.

New Parking Lot Report (Final Expenses)

Respected JSGD members, Jai Jinendra!

The Parking Lot Committee is happy to report that our project is complete and we have the final numbers for you.

We have combined all the expenses for the entire parking lot process from the concept phase to the realization. As you may recall, we had a total budget of $305,000 ($15,000 BOT approved exploration budget + $290,000 JSGD membership approved budget) for the project. With all the expenses paid and having received all the dues back from the City, we stand at a final amount of $309,033.79 for the project. Here is a summary of actual expenses by category.

Category Budget Actual

Engineering $20,000 $23,759.50

Testing $5,000 $4,185.40

Permits $5,000 $8,714.89

Construction $275,000 $272,374.00

Total $305,000 $309,033.79

We had to overcome the following obstacles which were not planned in the original budget process: 1 City added a significant number of trees during the permit approval process. 2 City added a brick wall along the east side during the permit approval process. 3 Added the engineering cost for items # 1 & 2. 4 There was more digging than anticipated resulting in extra dirt removal and labor cost.

We went over the budget by merely $4,033.79 or 1.3% of the project cost which you all agree that it is nothing compared to the size of the project and issues along the way. We do agree that we did not meet the original project schedule as we planned.

Bhupendrabhai Shah and Rashmiben Shah were appointed by BOT to do the audit. They had done the audit of the bidding process and all the expenses. They have not found any problems and a report is available if any member would like to see it.

It was a pleasure working on the project and we are glad to be part of the project. Please do not hesitate to contact any of us for questions.

Regards, Rajiv Shah

Sandy Relief Fund: On January, 2013, JOY team has raised $352 and gave the check to JAINA for Red cross Sandy relief Fund. Fundraising Dinner: On March 23rd, the Jain community is holding the annual Fundraising Dinner and JOY is planning on helping out throughout the night. We will be helping babysit kids, registration and assist the FRD Team. Donation to the Nepal Refugees: There is a collection for toys and games going on right now at the temple. All donations will be sent to a group of Nepalese Refugees. They originally lived in Nepal, but moved to Bhutan for a better life. However, the government of Bhutan began harassing them, so they traveled elsewhere. There is a group of these refugees in Lansing, Michigan, and all donations will be sent there. There are about 900 refugees there, and of them, 50-60 are children. The government helps them with housing and jobs, but the children do not have much. They would greatly appreciate any toys or games that you have in good condition (balls, bats, board games etc).
