(JG Photo/Jurnasyanto Sukarno) Jakarta. The Jakarta government plans to start a trial run on an automated toll-paying system, known as the Electronic Road Pricing system, in July in a bid to ease congestion on the city’s streets. “In June the equipment, the on-board unit [OBU], will be distributed for the trial,” Jakarta Deputy Governor Basuki Tjahaja Purnama was quoted as saying by state-run Antara news agency at city hall on Wednesday. “The live trial will be implemented in July 2014.” OBU, the censor device to be placed on a car’s windshield, will be automatically linked to the bank account of the car’s owner. When the car passes through the ERP gate, money in the account will be deducted automatically. Basuki, popularly known as Ahok, said that at the start of the ERP system, a car that passes along Jalan Sudirman and Jalan M.H. Thamrin would have to pay Rp 20,000 ($1.75). There will be four entrance gates, one of which will be located in front of Ratu Plaza, on Jalan Sudirman. “If the tariff is set at Rp 20,000 and many people are stilling use their own car, we will raise the price. The system is meant to ease traffic, mostly caused by four-wheeled vehicles.” The trial would be managed by Swedish company Kapsch, which will install OBU on 30 to 40 cars. “There’s no cost that we have to pay, it’s free,” Basuki said. “If we agree to cooperate with Kapsch, they will cooperate with one of the Jakarta-owned enterprises to apply the ERP technology in Jakarta.” If the system has been fully implemented, cars that have no OBU but still pass through the ERP streets would be issued a traffic ticket. The ticket will be sent to the home of the car’s owner. Aside from Kapsch, four other companies — Q-Free, Mitsubishi, IBM and Schneider — have shown interest in joining the project, according to Muhammad Akbar, who is head of the Jakarta Transportation Agency. “We haven’t decided which companies we’ll be working with. The most important thing is the trial, which will be evaluated later. Jakarta. The Jakarta government plans to start a trial run on an automated toll-paying system, known as the Electronic Road

Pricing system, in July in a bid to ease congestion on the city’s streets.

“In June the equipment, the on-board unit [OBU], will be distributed for the trial,” Jakarta Deputy Governor Basuki Tjahaja

Purnama was quoted as saying by state-run Antara news agency at city hall on Wednesday. “The live trial will be implemented

in July 2014.”

OBU, the censor device to be placed on a car’s windshield, will be automatically linked to the bank account of the car’s owner.

When the car passes through the ERP gate, money in the account will be deducted automatically.

Basuki, popularly known as Ahok, said that at the start of the ERP system, a car that passes along Jalan Sudirman and Jalan

M.H. Thamrin would have to pay Rp 20,000 ($1.75). There will be four entrance gates, one of which will be located in front of

Ratu Plaza, on Jalan Sudirman.

“If the tariff is set at Rp 20,000 and many people are stilling use their own car, we will raise the price. The system is meant to

ease traffic, mostly caused by four-wheeled vehicles.”

The trial would be managed by Swedish company Kapsch, which will install OBU on 30 to 40 cars.

“There’s no cost that we have to pay, it’s free,” Basuki said. “If we agree to cooperate with Kapsch, they will cooperate with one

of the Jakarta-owned enterprises to apply the ERP technology in Jakarta.”

If the system has been fully implemented, cars that have no OBU but still pass through the ERP streets would be issued a traffic

ticket. The ticket will be sent to the home of the car’s owner.

Aside from Kapsch, four other companies — Q-Free, Mitsubishi, IBM and Schneider — have shown interest in joining the

project, according to Muhammad Akbar, who is head of the Jakarta Transportation Agency.

“We haven’t decided which companies we’ll be working with. The most important thing is the trial, which will be evaluated later.

We don’t know yet how long the trial will be,” Akbar said.

If the system works well on the first corridor, the government would implement the same system on the second corridor — on

streets that connect Harmoni, in Central Jakarta, to Pulogadung, East Jakarta.

Stop selling subsidized petrol fro cars. Much easier to manage, certainly more effective and with a country-wide

impact to make people think twice about using their car to go jalan-jalan...

What, that "irrelevant country" that has drivers who follow road rules and stay in lane, no littering, no

smoking in public spaces etc. Granted that it can be bit sterile at times, but you got to admit that Indonesia

would be much better if it had a least some of the good things from your neighbour. Imagine for instance a

clean Jakarta with walkways you could walk along and cross at traffic lights without fear of some twat driver

running the red lights! :)

Every time I hear 'going to ease traffic', I laugh. This is what's going to happen : people will use motorcycles! You

can never solve the massive traffic/car problem without 1/ offering better public transport system, 2/ law

enforcement, and optionally 3/ making people emigrate from jakarta to other cities that should be developed, in

order to cut the overpopulation.

Autodeduct from bank accounts by government officials! What can go wrong? A splendid idea

A simple Google search (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/K... and even the company's website) clearly shows that this

is an Austrian company, not a Swedish one. TJG should be doing adequate research to avoid incorporating

unintentional false information in their articles.

To keep the cost of bank fees to a minimum the deductions from bank accounts should be Rp.500.000 each time.

When this drops to Rp.100.000 it should then be automatically topped up. Can you imagine how long each bank

statement would be if each use of the toll roads resulted in an automatic deduction from a bank account? As for

the "orang kampung" who do not have the OBU device installed, have a "Jalur Lambat Khusus Non-OBU where

they must queue up to pay their toll fee manually and charge them an aditional Rp.5000 for manual toll payment.

This will encourage them to install the OBU device. The system works fine in Australia and there are even

competing companies providing OBU devices so that no single company holds a monopoly.
