Self Analytical reflection

My two older sisters both participated in being on the yearbook staff at Arroyo Seco and Saugus High. They both enjoyed the class and wanted me try it, especially Alex. I liked photography, design, and writing, so I decided to join. As soon as I started yearbook at Seco I knew I would want to stay for the whole two years there, so I did. But as my 8th grade year passed at Seco I was hesitant in whether I should continue yearbook at Saugus, since I knew would be much harder and more real than in junior high. Saugus yearbook would require more dedication and hard work, but in the end I joined because I liked the idea and creativity of making the yearbook so much, and I was convinced by Alex. So throughout the year, I learned more about dedication and hard work. There were times in the year when everyone was crazy at work in the lab, and stress took everyone. People were always arguing with each other and problems popped up everywhere: people weren’t coming in, pictures weren’t good enough. At some points we had to rely on each other’s help to meet our deadlines, and it all fell on teamwork to get through. Dedication was another important thing. I remember the days when we would all be in the lab at 6:00 at night for days in a row to fi nish our pages before the deadline. I learned that no matter how far you think you are from being done, if you are dedicated you’ll fi nish. This was one of my commitments when I joined the staff. Staying in at lunch and after school to fi nish pages, and helping other people after you were fi nished were vital to the making of this yearbook. One time Chris, my section editor, told us that the fi rst one done with their pages in the People Section would get a prize, so I fi nished fi rst and my prize was another page. I remember working so hard on this page thinking it would never get done, but eventually I got help from the others and the page ended up done days before the deadline. Commitment in yearbook was huge, because whenever you thought you were fi nished, you never were. A big problem I faced this year had to do with cross country and track. Missing a day of school every Thursday to go to a meet meant missing a day to work on my pages. I also remember during the summer I was always busy with cross country and other events that I had little time to sell ads. But I learned to manage my time, and how to sell and advertise quickly but organized. If these problems ever arise again, problems where I think I won’t have enough time or where I have made just too many commitments, now I know that if I set my mind to something, I can do it. I believe I handled the whole yearbook-cross-country problem pretty well. By managing my time and schedule and keeping my eyes focused on my goals I ended up excelling in both subjects. And although I will not be returning to yearbook next year, I do not regret anything about taking this course. I have learned so many things, from actual production skills to things like teamwork and dedication. As for the actual production I have learned so much about Photoshop, photography, and writing, which I have no doubt I’ll use these skills in the future. I have always wanted to be some kind of writer, and taking this course has undeniably improved my journalism ethics. These along with others, such as the amazing friendships you form with other staff members during the year, are the reasons why my freshman year will stay with me forever.

design reflectionWhen I fi rst started wondering about what my theme would be for my portfolio, I began to think of what stood out to me most in life. I have always had this vivacious, bright personality. That is why I decided my theme would be “Things That Shine”. The cover of my portfolio is a black and white fl ower with bright highlights of color – pink, green, and orange – among the petals. I chose to do this because just like the fl ower, our lives are fi lled with good moments and bad, there are things and people that shine and stand out among others, which represents the grayscale vs. the bright colors. But in all, through all the good moments and bad, everything ends up beautiful, like the fl ower. If we did not have the bad (the gray) in our lives, we would never be able to recognize the good (the colors). As for the font, I just picked one that seemed to go well with the theme: lively and stands out. I think that this theme could be a possible theme for the yearbook because everyone has something in their life that shines, or something about them that stands out from others. It would give the book a feeling of potential happiness and brightness. As for my inspiration, I saw a magazine that said “international day of happiness” on the front, which got me thinking about the idea of “Things That Shine”. Throughout my portfolio, I kept this theme going by adding bits of the bright pink, orange, and green colors on my designs and headlines. I also made each page switch off with these three colors as a solid background to keep the theme fl owing. Throughout the document I used half circles and circles to relate to the circle part of the fl ower on the cover. One change I made along the way is that I originally had the black and white fl ower with the title still as “Things That Shine”, but there were no highlights of color on the fl ower; instead the word “Shine” was in bright green to make it stand out. But then I made the fl ower colorful too, so that there would be more theme colors and so it would make more sense to my earlier references to life. The whole process of designing is much harder than I thought it was. It was more diffi cult than I had known with the fact that everything had to be perfectly spaced, the colors had to correspond correctly, the theme had to run throughout the entire portfolio, the fonts had to correspond, etc. Particularly with the fi nished product I like the theme and everything that goes with it. For example, the theme trickles throughout the book to make it shine and fl ow, like the half circles and bright colors that I mentioned before. I also like my sidebar with the really thin pictures that represent a specifi c part of each person’s life. The sidebar is new and

Reflection 1One spread that contains three sidebars is my favorite piece of work because there are so many components to the sidebars that make them my best. On the surfing one, the COB of the guy on the wave draws you to the picture. Then once you start reading the quotes, they are so different from each other and not boring – short but sweet. On the next sidebar I learned how to do spot color. This is personally one of my favorite effects on any photograph. I like how the spot color makes one thing stand out from the black and white, and how in this case, it relates to the headline–“In the Spotlight”. I remember for this one I had trouble getting enough information for the writing. I had to talk to so many different people about it and I learned how to do good interviews. On the last sidebar I had to go in to the same english class at different periods and take pictures of the students in their working environment. I like how all of the pictures are in different angles, and how they are each doing something different as it says in the quotations at the bottom. Overall, I like how each of these sidebars fit together well on the same spread because they all have different components - headshots, COBs, spot color, etc., but they also match.

Reflection 2This was my very first sidebar ever. I think that it can still use some work because it is not the best topic, some of the quotes are very similar, and the pictures aren’t too exciting. I think that if I had more time or if I was more experienced in yearbook I could have gone to a whole new event to take pictures and use them for this sidebar. When creating this piece I remember not being able to find any events that had not already been used, so I used this as a last resort. Now, I feel like if I had been as experienced as I am currently, I could have made this sidebar so much better. Even if I could not have changed the whole topic, I could have called people back in to get better quotes. Given the chance I also could have gone to another chess club during lunch and taken better pictures. During the making of this sidebar I learned more about adjusting photos in Photoshop. I also learned afterward that it is difficult to get good quotes out of people, and tricks to make the person say more. Writing your questions down first on a piece of paper and having them write in their answers instead of fully interviewing them is smart because people tend to write down more, and in more detail, than speaking to a stranger. I do not think that this piece of work is terrible, but it can still use some work.

Reflection 3During the year, I mainly took headshots for the “People” section and have very few event photos. I am proud of this picture mainly because of the worms-eye-view angle. The photo easily draws your eyes right to him as the center of interest, and follows the rule of thirds. The next place your eye goes is his bowling pin. The bowling pin and the fact that he is dressed up as an old man are the reasons this picture is so interesting, along with the happy expression on his face. This is what attracts people to a picture like this one. You can find this photo on the Y drive, February folder, Basketball_senior night, IMG_4137.

People are instantly drawn to this picture because of the two people jumping as the center of visual interest. The expressions on their face are entertaining to look at. Also, the volleyball net serves as a leading line along with the lines in the background on the wall. Your eye is also attracted to the guy hitting the ball. His position in the air as he hits the ball and being able to see the reactions of the opposing players before they hit the ball makes this picture great. I am proud of it because this was my first and only time taking a sports picture with no experience before, and it turned out well. This photo is saved in the Y drive, design projects, jakee, pictures, voleyball. I like this photo because the two girls on the side frame the main girl, the center of visual interest. For this photo being the first time ever taking pictures of an event, I think it is pretty good. Following the rule of thirds, your eye goes straight to the girl with a smiling, happy expression on her face. The colors in this photo all correspond with each other, attracting you to it. You can find this picture on Y drive, September, Cross Country Pasta Dinner, IMG_6332.

Beyond the Obvious same seat, diff erent views in Mrs. Stacy Hartmann’s English classes

Period 2 “I like that in English we don’t have busy work and that we have open discussion. My friend Lauren and I were comparing our views on the video we had just watched. ”- Alyssa McCrory, 09

Period 4 “What’s good about this class is that it’s very interesting, and there’s really not anything I don’t like. Mrs. Hartmann is such a great teacher, I think this class is more than good.” – Chadi Diba, 09

Period 5 “My class is ELA English. My friends sit around me, but it doesn’t aff ect the way I work in class because we are only three students. It’s cool that I only have a few classmates.”– Federico Bailaque, 10

Period 6 “I am a student service for this very interesting and relaxing class. It’s a prett y easy class and there is always something or someone to entertain me.” – Jeff rey Lytle, 09

“Every morning I drink a tall cup of coff ee with lots of cream to make it taste good. It helps me wake up because it

gives me lots of energy and caff eine in the morning before school. If I don’t have coff ee, I am usually not fully awake.“ - Joey Johnson, 10

“I need Starbucks. In the morning every single day. I get a caramel Frappuccino with extra caramel. There’s lots of sugar in

this drink, so it keeps me awake during the day. When I don’t get Starbucks, which is extremely rare, I feel very sad and not hyper.” - Jasmine Jauregui, 11

“I have a daily dose of chocolate every morning; it can be any sort of chocolate like

chocolate muffi ns, chocolate chip waffl es, or Nutella. I eat it because it tastes good and makes my tummy happy, so then I am happy and awake for school.” - Megan Cho, 09

“Noxerna face wash and Listerine wakes me up. It tingles my skin and makes it feel minty. I do this in the

morning because it’s refreshing and only takes about 2 minutes. I’ve been washing my face every day with this stuff ever since I can remember.” - Jasmine Ortiz, 10

“Seminary is what wakes me up. What it is, is church classes every morning from 6:40 to when school starts. Seminary gives

me enough time to wake myself up in a fun environment. I have been going to it every morning since the start of freshmen year.“ - Steven Stanley, 09

“Standing in a hot shower in the morning with water running over my skin helps me think straight. Sometimes I’ll also go

on my phone or do something productive to help me be awake enough to go to school.” - Miguel Avila-Rojo, 11

reflection 4Y24. Informational Graphics: Single

I chose this sidebar (on page 181) to represent a timeline for this submission. It relays a different person in the same seat throughout each class period during the day. I liked this sidebar because it shows various perspectives of various people, but in the same english classes. The different angles in each of these pictures help to bring this out. The quotes at the bottom of the page explain how each person is doing something different from the others throughout the same course of the day.

Y7. Sidebar Writing

This sidebar is a mini photo package about Literary Magazine, or “LitMag”. I picked this sidebar because the topic had to do with writing, and I really liked this one’s writing. The creative lead-ins in blue that join to the picture and the caption really bring out its great visual-verbal connection. I also think that the lead-ins are creative and once the reader sees the lead-in, it will draw them in to read the rest. Since the writing is all different, some are captions and some are quotes, it makes the copy more interesting.

Y34. People Spread with Mug Photos

This submission can be any sidebar with Mug Photos as the layout. I picked this spread because I really like how each person has something special that they need to have in the morning, and how it is cut out and placed around them as a COB. The contrast between the black and white headshots and colorful COBs make the sidebar stand out. I also like the text wrap around the COBs.
