New Babe in Christ

We recently had the privilege of witnessing Haley McElroy being baptized into

Christ. Haley attends with her mother Daphne and we are so excited for Haley’s deci-

sion to start walking with Jesus!

Exposure 2013

Today many of our number are in Huntsville for Exposure Youth Camp. Close to

2000 were registered to attend. Young people from all over the brotherhood will come

together for four days of worship, classes and Christian fellowship. I appreciate the op-

portunity to share in this time with our young people. Thanks to Tim Shoemaker for

preaching today in my absence.

Every Member Present

Our first big Sunday of 2014 is Every Member Present Day on January 12th. We’ll

have class, worship, fellowship meal, and an afternoon service at 1:00. We encourage

everyone to make a special effort to be present so we may encourage each other. If you

know of someone who hasn’t been attending regularly, why not give them a call and let

them know you have missed them and remind them about this special effort. Next year

is shaping up to be “a year to come home.” Let’s start the year off right with a great

day on Jan. 12th.

At the Close of Another Year

It’s hard to believe this will be our last visit in the Reminder until the year 2014. The

year has come and gone very quickly!!! We have plenty of positive memories to rejoice

in as we now turn to 2014. Next year will be a great year for many reasons, but I am

RESTORATION PLEA – PART FOUR

As we continue thinking about the desirability of the restoration plea and how it is God’s will that we return to the pattern that he has established we want to notice God’s pat-tern for how we become His children and how we are to live. Though God’s will in this regard is plain it is equally plain that men have forsaken that pattern also. Barton W. Stone recognized in his ministry that something was wrong. He had a number of people who had responded on evening seeking forgiveness but who seemed to find no relief. He then addressed the audience and told them, “Brethren something must be wrong; we have been laboring with these mourners earnestly, and they are deeply penitent; why have they not found relief? We all know that God is will-ing to pardon them, and certainly they are anxious to re-ceive it. The cause must be that we do not preach as the apostles did. On the day of Pentecost those who were ‘pierced to the heart’ were promptly told what to do for the remission of sins. And ‘they that gladly received the word were baptized; and the same day about three thousand were added unto them.’” God’s word is plain from the examples we find in the New Testament as what people must do. They must believe in Jesus or they will die in their sins (John 8:24) and if they die in their sins they cannot go where Jesus has gone (John 8:21). They must repent of their sins or they will per-ish (Luke 13:3, 5). They must confess Jesus before men (Mt. 10:32) and they must be immersed in water for the for-giveness of their sins (Acts 2:38). After one has become God’s child by obedience to God’s will one must continue to live his life in keeping with God’s will. Paul instructed the Christians at Philippi to “join in following my example, and note those who so walk, as you have us for a pat-tern. 18 For many walk, of whom I have told you often, and now tell you even weeping, that they are the ene-mies of the cross of Christ: 19 whose end is destruc-tion, whose god is their belly, and whose glory is in their shame--who set their mind on earthly things” (Phil. 3:17-19). A failure to follow God’s pattern means God’s disap-proval and certain punishment. In the letter to the Galatians Paul warned the brethren saying, “I marvel that you are turning away so soon from Him who called you in the grace of Christ, to a different gospel, 7 which is not an-other; but there are some who trouble you and want to pervert the gospel of Christ. 8 But even if we, or an an-gel from heaven, preach any other gospel to you than what we have preached to you, let him be accursed. 9 As we have said before, so now I say again, if anyone preaches any other gospel to you than what you have received, let him be accursed” (Gal. 1:6-9). With a world lost in sin and in need of salvation the plea for a restoration of the ancient order of things is still valid. Men still need to give up their creeds, their names and follow the only pattern that God has given; the only pattern He has ever approved – the Bible.
