TEDIdeas Worth Spreading
JAMIE OLIVERBeloved television
personalities and one of the world’s food
phenomenon's, Jamie Oliver uses his
knowledge to help people live better,
healthier lives.
Jamie Oliver's TED Prize wish: Teach every child about food
Jamie shows how bad food choices are being made at home,at schools, and in our everyday lives. He shows how the lackof food knowledge in the classroom and at home amongst
kids is little to none.
The leading causes of death in this country is heart disease, cancer, stroke and diabetes. All diet related.
This is PREVENTABLE.
Jamie explains 3 points to this triangle.
Kids are not being taught at home to cook.Schools are not teaching food/health in the classrooms.
School lunches are going the ‘cheap’ route.
To exemplify his points, Jamie traveled to West Virginia,
the most obese state in the nation.
This is Brittany. She’s 16. She has 6 years
to live.
This is the Edwards Family.
Katie is 4 years old.She is obese and not even
in kindergarten.
Justin is 12 years old. He is 350lbs.
This is one weeks worth of food for the Edwards family.
TED Commandment 3:Make the complex plain.
Jamie then explains that schools have, over time, have started going the cheaper route,
starting with milk. This wheel barrel full ofsugar cubes exemplifies how much sugar your
child consumes drinking a carton of school milk during elementary school, alone.
Dynamism: 5/5I feel Jamie did a wonderful job
getting his point across. He easilykept my attention. Jamie showed how
passionate he is about his work and he wasspeaking from the heart. It shows
How big of a problem food and healthreally are and how easy it is to correct it.
Jamie’s well delivered presentation included pictures, videos and clear, understandable graphs, making it
easily understandable. His on stage confidence was very clear. All of these factors positively
influence the work of Nancy Duarte and Garr Reynolds .
What did I learn from Jamie?
I learned a lot from Jamie. I made a lot of connections in my
own life and how lucky I am to come from a healthy, active family. Being a college student now, I see
My friends, teachers and peers making poor choices when it
comes to food. A major thing Jamie taught me is how large of a
part school plays. His example of when he
visited an elementary class andnot one child in the classroom
Knew the healthy foods he was holding up was shocking.
Comparing Speeches:In both speeches, one of the biggest
connections I made is how things need to be improved in our schools. One thing
Jamie used that Sir Ken Robinsondid not were examples such as images,
videos, and demonstrations. I also thought Jamiehad a lot more energy.
Be Passionate. If you’re excited to convey
