Harlan Marquardt (Hospice)
Did you know much of the artwork of our church was created by
members of the congregation? As we call your attention to them
over the next few weeks, please take time to really look at them.
The large painting that hangs in Fellowship Hall was painted by
Burton Nelson, a life-long member of our congregation. “Give Me
Thy Hand” was inspired by the Bishop’s sermon at the dedication
service of our church building in 1959, and was completed in a
couple weeks.
Here are the artist’s comments:
• The painting was produced on a piece of 4’ x 8’ Masonite,
framed with an 8” redwood border. It is attached to the wall
with masonry bolts holding key-holed metal plates, and was
hung by church members, Romain Nelson (the artist’s father)
and Dave Kistler (Dee Runcie’s father).
• The viewer will easily identify symbolic features of the art.
The fields are worked and ready, but there are no workers in
the field. Christ’s foot is planted on the skull rock, showing his
victory over death. The skeleton of the unrepentant thief hangs
on the cross; but the others are empty.
• Christ’s complexion is a combination of the colors of all man-
kind, and his hand reaches out to everyone, as a bridge between
God and Man. The hand is the only object in the painting that
is three-dimensional, made with a composite of Elmer’s glue
and plaster.
You are invited to meditate on the meaning you find as you look at
this piece of artwork, and consider the effort that went into both the
painting and the display of this art.
