Membership

• New member nominations received– Four nominations applying only to the DETC

• G. Honea, D. Staggars, C. Hall and L. Saam• Honea, Hall (Design Engineering Award winner) and Saam all recommended for acceptance by the

steering committee• Staggars is a good candidate but is from Raytheon Missile Systems and they will only support one

additional member (Honea)

– One nomination received that did not appear to be a good fit for the DETC– Two nominations received applying to multiple TC’s

• J. Schrell (Hybrid Rocket TC)• R. Amano (Applied Aero, Gas Turbine Engines, Thermophysics TC’s)• Both recommended for acceptance by the steering committee• Emails sent to “competing” TC’s, all responding they are interested as well• Decision up to individual as to which TC he will join (Russ to contact each about joining DETC)

• One member is resigning – Tom Dieters

Jan 4-5, 2011

Membership

• Approached by TAC about absorbing the Computer Aided Enterprise Solutions TC within DETC– Current numbers are

small (7 members)– Appears to have

synergy with the Design Process S/C activities

• Discussion?

Call for Papers WG

• Current CFP (2011 ASM and SDM)– Papers are solicited on current design process and design engineering

activities. Process-oriented papers should focus on current design engineering process activities, such as the impact of model-based definition and paperless processes, stochastic design, and process definition and certification, as applied to aerospace hardware products from the exploratory design phase through the detailed design phase. The interaction between processes and tools, impact of tool integration on a process, requirements evaluation at the design synthesis phase, and risk reduction from the use of higher-fidelity tools earlier in the design process are solicited. Emerging design tools that have resulted in significant design-cycle time reduction from tool integration, and the use of experiments, simulation, or rapid synthesis and analysis tools that enable coverage of a large number of design configurations for rapid trade space exploration and sensitivity studies, should be emphasized. Additionally, design-specific papers are solicited that focus on innovative, novel, or otherwise distinctive designs or concepts resulting in products that have effectively satisfied requirements or demonstrated design efficiency improvements.

Call for Papers WG• Changes for ASM 2012 CFP (and recommendation for SDM 2012 CFP)• Papers are solicited on current design engineering and design process activities. Design-oriented papers

should focus on innovative, novel, or otherwise distinctive designs or concepts resulting in or leading toward products that effectively satisfy requirements or demonstrate design efficiency improvements. Emphasis on current aerospace programs such as commercial access to space, very light business jets, NASA Environmentally Responsible Aviation, ESTOL, satellites, missile systems, Unmanned Air Systems and service life extension projects are encouraged. The definition, application, and implementation of emerging design tools which have resulted in significant design-cycle time reduction from tool integration, and the use of experiments, simulation, or rapid synthesis and analysis tools which have resulted in the ability to analyze a large number of design configurations resulting in or leading toward reduced program cost and risk should be emphasized.

• Process-oriented papers should focus on current design engineering process activities, such as process definition, analysis, architecture, and metrics, as applied to aerospace hardware products from the exploratory design phase through the detailed design phase. Papers on the advances in model based design processes and related activities are especially encouraged. Other design engineering process-related activities that may be addressed are the interaction between processes and tools, impact of tool integration on a process, and risk reduction from the use of higher-fidelity tools earlier in the design process. Other enablers to reducing design cycle time and cost, while increasing the ability to meet all cost, schedule, and technical requirements may also be addressed.

• Education-oriented papers are solicited that emphasize design in curriculum development, class content and student activities. Examples showing how to teach design are especially requested.

DBF 2011

• This year’s contest held at Cessna Aircraft Co, Wichita, KS– Apr 16-18, 2010

• The mission “theme” is Baseball Team Plane– Ferry mission – no payload, speed counts– Payload flight – random selection of 6 – 10 softballs

(selected right before flight with roll of the dice)– Payload flight – up to 5 externally carried “bats” (PVC

pipes of various weight and length)• Team selects number of bats (higher score factor for more

bats)• Bats selected at random prior to flight

• Rules for 2010/2011 contest– Soldier Portable UAV

• Contest to be held in Tucson, AZ Apr 15-17• The UAV and all required equipment must fit in a

case that meets airline carry-on requirements• Three missions

– Dash to Critical Target – most laps in 4 minutes– Ammo Re-supply – steel bar provided by team –

heavier bar and lighter airplane will maximize score– Medical Supply Mission – golf balls; team will select

the number to fly – more balls will maximize score• All missions will begin with a hand launch

Awards

• Design Engineering Award Nominations– Next award will be awarded in 2012

• Beginning at ASM in 2011, we must put out a very strong effort to solicit quality nominations for the next award

• Nominations are due Oct 1, 2011– We have a goal to get 6 quality nominations for the

next award– Additional comments:

• The award recipient cannot have been a member of the TC for at least two years

• We need to NOT rely on AIAA only to advertise and solicit nominations for this award

• Create and post flyers at all conferences possible starting in 2011 (working session to create and post at ASM?)

• Send solicitation letter to engineering management of major aerospace firms for nominations
