It was Sivan of 5567/1807, and thousands of joyous Chasidim were anticipating the wedding that would unite two illustrious dynasties. The chassan, Reb Yekusiel Zalman, was the son of Reb Yosef Bunim Wallis, who was the son-in-law of the great Jewish defender, Reb Levi Yitzchak of Berditchev. Reb Yekusiel was soon to be wed to Baila, who was the daughter of Reb Dov Ber, later known as the Mittler Rebbe, who was the son of the Baal HaTanya, Reb Schneur Zalman of Liadi.

The town of Zhlobin was chosen as the setting for the wedding, as many of the Baal HaTanya’s Chasidim resided in Zhlobin, which was also equidistant from the towns of Berditchev and Liadi. The Chupah was going to take place on Friday afternoon, as was the custom in those times, and the festive meal would follow on Friday night.

On the morning of the wedding day, the Rebbetzen of the Baal HaTanya had a complaint. While the Rebbetzen was willing to prepare the entire Friday night meal, as the custom was that the meal would be prepared by the kallah’s side, there was one slight problem.

There was no fish available, and what would a Shabbos wedding meal be without fish? Furthermore, the Rebbetzen had heard that Reb Levu Yitzchak had a custom to always eat fish at a Seudas mitzvah, a festive meal, and if there was no fish, he would recite Kiddush and HaMotzi and not partake in the remainder of the meal.

This would surely be unfitting for such a joyous occasion. When Reb Schneur Zalman heard of the dilemma, he declared that Reb Levi Yitzchak himself should be consulted. When Reb Levi Yitzchak heard about the problem, he asked in wonder, “Could it be that there

will not be fish for Shabbos? Are there no rivers in this town?” The messenger of the Rebbetzen responded, “the Dnieper River flows nearby, but the river does not have fish.” The Heilegeh Berditchever summoned a horse and buggy and he then sent a message inviting his mechutan, The Baal HaTanya, to join him at the banks of the river.

When they arrived at the river, Reb Levi Yitzchak removed a handkerchief and waved it over the river, all the while murmuring verses from the zemer Azamer b’Shvuchin, the famous zemer of the Arizal that is sung Friday night. Reb Levi Yitzchak then called out the words “vinunin urachashin,” which is Aramaic for fish and meat.

Suddenly, schools of fish cane swimming towards them from all directions. People ran to get their nets, and soon their buckets were filled with

Even babies as young as a year-and-a-half can guess what other people are thinking, new research suggests.

The results come from a study of children spanning the globe, from rural China to the more remote islands of Fiji. Previously, scientists thought this ability to understand other people’s perspectives emerged much later in children.

The study used a form of the false-belief test, one of the few cognitive tasks that young children, can do.

Classic testIn the classic test of children’s understanding called the false-belief task, one person comes into a room and puts an object (such as a pair of scissors) into a hiding place. A second person then comes in and puts the scissors into his pocket, unbeknownst to the first individual. When that first person returns, someone will ask the child, “Where do you think the first person will look for the scissors?”

The task is tricky because the children need to have a theory of mind, or an ability to understand other people’s perspectives, in this case that of the individual who didn’t see the scissors being retrieved by another.

By ages 4 to 7, most children can answer that the first person will look in the original hiding place, because the individual doesn’t know the scissors have moved.

However, a new study now shows that if researchers don’t ask babies the question, but instead follow the infants’ eye movements, the

children seem to understand the concept much earlier.

In this study researchers studied about 91 children in total.

The team created a live-action play with a very similar set-up to the classic false-belief test:

A man leaves some scissors hidden in a box, while another person comes in and puts them into his pocket.

During the play, as he is pocketing the scissors, the second person pauses, chin in hand, looking at the ceiling and says, ‘Hmm, I wonder where they’ll look for the scissors.

The researchers then video recorded the children’s reactions to the play.

The youngsters consistently looked at the box, showing that the little ones expected the first man to search for the scissors where he had left them. Understanding what the first person believes, and also what he doesn’t know, required the children to make sophisticated inferences about other people’s knowledge.

Early developmentThe findings show that children develop this mind-reading ability of sorts years earlier than previously thought.

Scrumptious muffins to set the tone for your Shabbos…

Ingredients:

6 Tbsp butter or margarine

1 ½ cups all-purpose flour

1 tsp baking powder

1/2 tsp baking soda

1 tsp cinnamon

1/2 tsp salt

2 eggs

2/3 cup brown sugar

1 ½ cups chunky applesauce

Directions

1. Heat the oven to 375 degrees. Line a 12-cup muffin tin with bake cups and set aside.

2. In a small microwave-safe bowl, melt the butter/margarine on high for about 30 to 60 seconds; set aside to cool slightly.

3. Sift together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon, and salt in a large mixing bowl.

4. When mixing dry and wet ingredients for muffins, gently stir just until the flour disappears. This will produce muffins with a nice crumbly texture.

5. In another large bowl, whisk together the eggs and brown sugar. Stir in the applesauce and melted butter/margarine until the mixture is completely smooth. For mess-free muffins, use an ice-cream scoop to spoon the batter into the bake cups.

6. Pour the apple mixture over the flour mixture and mix with a wooden spoon until fully combined (NOTE: Mixture is ready when all flour is properly mixed in).

7. Fill the bake cups about two-thirds full.

8. Bake for 20 minutes or until light brown.

9. Test for doneness by inserting a knife in the middle of one muffin. If it comes out clean, the muffins are ready to eat.

Yields: 12 muffins.

How did a bank robber outsmart the police? The robber posted an ad on asking construction road workers for a road maintenance project. To insure many would respond, he posted an hourly wage of $28.50! All he asked was that whoever came to the job must wear a yellow reflective vest, safety goggles, a blue shirt, and a respirator mask.

Sure enough, the robbery took place at a bank in Seattle and the thief left the premises with a duffle bag of cash dressed just like he instructed the construction workers. When the police were called, there were a dozen or so people that matched the crook’s description!

The factory foreman inspected the shipment of crystal vases leaving the plant, and approached his new packer. He put his arm around the man’s shoulder and said,

“Well, I see you did what I asked. Stamped the top of each box, ‘This Side Up,

Handle With Care.’”“Yes sir,” the worker replied. “And just to

make sure, I stamped it on the bottom too.”
