Jana Revedin, architect, PhD in architectural and urban sciences and full professor of architecture and urbanism, was born in Constance (Germany) in 1965. She studied architecture and urbanism in Buenos Aires, Princeton and Milan and taught at IUAV University in Venice as an assistant to Aldo Rossi. It was here that she presented her doctorate on the role of public space in the de-velopment of a democratic civic identity. Since receiving her authorisation to direct scientific research from the Ministry of Universities and Scientific Research in Rome in 2000 she has been appointed an associate professor of architec-ture and urbanism at Beuth University in Berlin and the University of Umeå in Sweden and a full professor at Blekinge Institute of Technology in Karlskrona, Sweden. In 2016 she has been appointed a full profes-sor at the École spéciale d’architecture (ESA) in Paris and commissioned to develop a two-year master’s programme “The collective factory: ex-perimental open-work design”. In 2017 she was invited to join the École nationale supérieure d’architecture in Lyon (ENSAL) as a visiting pro-fessor and member of the LAURE (Lyon Architec-ture Urbanisme Recherche) Research Laboratory

– which is part of the UMR 5600 “Environment, city, society” of the National Centre for Scientific Re-search (CNRS). A UNESCO expert for sustainable development and the UNESCO delegate to the Education and Research Commission of the International Uni-on of Architects (UIA), Jana Revedin is a leading campaigner for a paradigm change in the profes-sion, evoking architecture´s reformatory mission.

In parallel with the internationally recognised ar-chitectural and urban projects that she develops in her offices in Wernberg, Austria and Venice, Italy she dedicates herself to the establishment of a network of pioneering and innovative architects who are working on the sustainable development of inhabited environments. In 2005 the European Commission invited her to

set up the first European student competition for sustainable architecture (gau:di) whose winning projects (“a minimal house”, “urban loft” and “a market hall”) were exhibited at the Venice Bien-nales in 2008, 2010 and 2012. In 2006 she established the Global Award for Sus-tainable Architecture™ (placed under the patro-nage of UNESCO in 2010) which is awarded every year to five architects who are engaged in the search for a new architectural and urban ethics. The community of the Global Award for Sustai-nable Architecture (60 award-winners from bet-ween 2007 and 2018) has given birth to a global collective of scientific and professional exchange and experimentation. In 2009 she created the LOCUS Foundation which supports research into the methodology of susta-inable design and the application of this metho-dology to projects of experimental urban renewal.

Jana Revedin is the author of reference works in the field of sustainable architecture and urban de-sign. She was awarded the Teaching Excellence Prize of the Association of European Schools of Urban Design (AESOP) in 2013 and, together with her Swedish and Moroccan students, the Glo-bal Prize of UN Habitat’s Urban Revitalisation of Mass Housing competition in 2014. Made a Che-valier des arts et des lettres in 2014 she has also been honoured by the Academy of Architecture, Paris (Medal for the direction of the best doctoral thesis, 2016, and Prospective Medal, 2017).Jana Revedin continues to develop her theory of participative “radicant” design and to expe-riment with the related interdisciplinary “open work” teaching, seeking to demonstrate that the architectural and urban project, understood as a collective process of co-programming, co-con-ception and co-production, is evolutionary, incre-mental and capable of being modelled. She teaches, works and writes in her mother tongue, German, as well as in English, French, Italian and Spanish.

Areas of research of Jana Revedin1:

1. The right to the city: Civicity, conviviality and urban democracy through development and civic empowerment.2. The open city and common assets: Problems of the right to the city of genders and minorities, the relationship between the empowerment of re-sidents and their access to energy, mobility and structural and material innovation. 3. The quality of place: taking into consideration collective memory, material, sensory and human resources and the aspirations of residents to pro-tection, comfort and habitability.

Each year Jana Revedin directs and supervises around 20 master’s papers and directs or evalua-tes up to five doctoral theses in architecture and urban design2. This ongoing work of transmission nourishes her three areas of research developed in partnership with international research cen-tres3.

She is invited to deliver keynote lectures on sus-tainable architecture and urbanism and partici-patory design all around the world and sits on the juries of numerous international prizes in the areas of architecture and urban develop-ment including: Europan France; Europan Swe-den; the Architecture Prize of the International Union of Architects (UIA); the Sustainable Urban Landscape Award (UNESCO); the Grand Prix de l’Architecture, France; the Blue Award, Austria; the Global Award for Sustainable Architecture, Pa-ris and selection juries for commissioners of the pavilions of the Architecture Biennale in Venice.

She has been the UNESCO Delegate to the Uni-versity Education and Research Commission of the UIA since 2012. This commission defines the international criteria for architectural education and the level of scientific research in architecture during biennial meetings, the UIA Biennale and the Habitat Conferences of the UN. It has also elected her President of its evaluation committee, whose role is to advise and evaluate schools of architecture and urban design and schools awar-ding doctorates in the science of architecture and urbanism in line with the UNESCO Charter that was drawn up in partnership with the Royal Ins-titute of British Architects (RIBA) and adopted by the UIA.

-:HSMARC=ZYX\U]:

The unseen economic, ecological, social and cultural challenges facing contemporary societies are being addressed by architects and planners as they search for a new definition of progress and the right balance between man and the environment. The understanding of design as a collective process based on shared ethics, methods and experiments has been rewarded since 2007 by the Global Award for Sustainable Architecture™. An honour created by the architect and professor, Jana Revedin, in partnership with international scientific institutions and the Cité de l’ Architecture & du Patrimoine of Paris. The award received the patronage of UNESCO in 2011. The 2011 and 2012 award winners and their achievements are presented in this critical review by Marie-Hélène Contal which discusses the rich global debate about architecture as it addresses society’s transitions. This is preceded by a new theoretical approach to urban morphologies and participatory design, “The Radicant City: Why Sustainable Living Space Grows Like Ivy” by Jana Revedin and a foreword by Christopher Alexander.

SUSTAINABLE DESIGN 6Le Global Award for Sustainable

Architecture a été créé en 2007 par

l’architecte et professeure Jana Revedin

avec la Cité de l’architecture & du

patrimoine de Paris comme partenaire

culturel.

Sustainable Architecture Community.

Le thème retenu par le jury de

la onzième édition du Global Award

était « Les ressources invisibles de

l´architecture ». Les lauréats 2017 sont

Takaharu Tezuka + Yui Tezuka (Tezuka

Architects, Japon), Sonam Wangchuk

(Inde), Assemble (Angleterre), Brian

MacKay-Lyons et Talbot Sweetapple

(MacKay-Lyons & Sweetapple Architects,

Canada), Paulo David (Portugal).

Leurs travaux, présentés ici, confirment

la densité du débat sur les rapports entre

architecture, ressources et développement.

The Global Award for Sustainable Architecture, created in 2007 by the architect and professor Jana Revedin in partnership with the Cité de l’architecture & du patrimoine de Paris, rewards every year five architects who share the ethics of sustainable development and propose new experiences in the urban as well as in the rural areas. The Global Award for Sustainable Architecture Community (55 laureates since 2007) has become a global collective of exchange as much as of scientific and professional experimentation.

The subject addressed by the jury of this eleventh edition of the Global Award was “The invisible ressources of architecture”. The prize winners 2017 are: Takaharu Tezuka + Yui Tezuka (Tezuka Architects, Japan), Sonam Wangchuk (India), Assemble (Great Britain), Brian MacKay-Lyons and Talbot Sweetapple (MacKay-Lyons & Sweetapple Architects, Canada), Paulo David (Portugal). Their works gathered together here confirm the density of the debate among architecture, resources and development.
