This helps with walking: Devices (see below) currently exist that use EMG to help patients to rehabilitate and have been shown to accelerate rehabilitation. Unfortunately, these are bulky and expensive: The device is designed to fit inside the shoe and trouser leg and functions as follows (see fig below): the muscle signal which controls the device is obtained through electrodes and screened wires (1) muscle signals are exceedingly weak (80mV 30mV) These are susceptible to noise and must be amplified to be of any use. For this, a high gain differential amplifier and band pass filter is used (2, 3) a microprocessor distributes power (7) and uses position inputs from the foot (5) to control power to the foot (6)which is done using an h-bridge (4). the actuator, which is a brushed DC motor, an epicyclic gearbox and slip clutch, then moves the foot. With rehabilitation, patients may acquire degrees of muscle control. Consequently, the device is designed with three modes to allow the patient to adjust performance and sensitivity of the device (see below) This project has produced effective solutions for future devices requiring compact hinge-actuator mechanisms.
