JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2014 THE SHOWTIMES 5
Favorite Show Day Grooming Product/Equipment: Air Express III, I really do enjoy blowingon my steers.
Favorite Barn Tool: Roto Brush
Favorite Daily Hair Care Product: Sullivan’s Kleen Sheen
Best Part Of My Win: The feeling that all the hard work has paid off. I have also come to realizethere is a certain level of luck that needs to be with you on show day. Favorite Hobby: Baseball, Hunting, Fishing and working with cattle
Favorite Sports Team: K-State Wildcats Baseball team
Favorite College/University: K-State
Favorite Breed: Simmental
Favorite Stock Show: National Western Stock Show because juniors have to rely on themselvesand their family to get their steers ready.
All-Time Favorite Calf: Probably my first steer Okie. I won the Kansas State Fair with him. Hisgreat attitude is what hooked me into showing steers.
Favorite Show Day Aid: Focus. My Denver steer’s attitude wasn’t the best, but Focus helpedTrevor relax and chew his cud. No doubt it works!
Daily Hair Care Tip: We pretty much rinse and blow cattle every day. Sometimes their skin getsdry. What we find works best is spraying a light coat of Kleen Sheen mixed with 1/3 rag oil intothe hair then work with a Rice Root brush and lots of blowing time.
Show Day Tip: We try to get our work done at home so when we get to the shows everythingseems normal for the animal and exhibitor. Also, we try not to over fill our animal. The correct fillmakes a huge difference on their movement and how comfortable they are in the show ring.
Proudest Accomplishment: It has always been my dream to win Denver!
Future Goals: I’d like to win the Kansas City and Louisville steer shows.
A very special Thank You to my family and Bonham Show Cattle for their continued support. I also want to thank Sullivan Supply and Stock Show U for
all the products and opportunities they provide the cattle industry.

Favorite Show Day Grooming Product/Equipment: Sullivan’s Tail Adhesive
Favorite Barn Tool: Rice Root Brush
Favorite Daily Hair Care Product: Sullivan’s Vita Hair Volumizer & Sullivan’s Kleen Sheen
Favorite Show Day Aid: We have used several, but we like Alert the best!
Favorite Hobby: Showing cattle and livestock judging
Favorite Sports Team: Denver Broncos. I have faith they will make it to the Super Bowl this year.
Favorite Breed: Charolais, Chianina & Angus
What would you rather show - steers or heifers: I switch back and forth. Right now it is heifers because I am nolonger eligible age wise to show steers at most places.
Favorite Stock Show: National Western Stock Show. I know it can be cold, but I love the tradition and it’s in mybackyard.
Best Part Of My Win: Since I started showing cattle at 8, I always wanted to win the Colorado State Fair Steer Show.So winning it my last year of showing steers was rather bitter sweet. I was so happy to finally have won, but knowingit was my last year, I was sad at the same time. Then winning the heifer show was an added bonus.
All-Time Favorite Calf: Probably the steer I had in 2012. We had a special bond and he didn’t like nobody but me!
Proudest Accomplishment: Hmmmm, well my Peaches heifer was Champion Charolais Composite Heifer andChampion Prospect Heifer in Denver in 2012. I showed that year after just having surgery on my ankle! In 2013 shecame back to Denver and won Champion Charolais Composite Heifer again- a three-time Denver champion!
Daily Hair Care Tip: For us, we only shampoo once a week, but we condition and moisturize daily. We think thiskeeps the hair hydrated better instead of drying it out with a daily shampoo.
Show Day Ritual: I have to have my lucky show stick.
Daily Barn Routine: Steers go in the cooler and heifers in the barn under fans. We rinse our steers three times a dayand brush them until they are dry. We rinse heifers twice a day and alternate between blowing or brushing them dry.We are strong believers in using Kleen Sheen and Rag Oil. When the Colorado summer nights are cool enough, weleave the cattle wet before we kick them out.
Future Goals: I hope to attend a four year program and join a Livestock Judging team and then eventually go to Vetschool.
I definitely want to thank my brother Austin and both my parents. I also want to say thank you to all my relatives and friends that I have purchashed cattle from
in the past who have supported me through the years.
No one likes the industry more than Kyndal. This past Sullivan Supply/Stock Show U Scholarship winner is dedicated
in the class room and barn. A self motivated winner here.

JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2014 THE SHOWTIMES 11
As Described by Nolyn Holley ...Proudest show career accomplishment: In 1992, I was Champion PeeWee Showman at the National JuniorHereford Show held at Milwaukee, WI. That same year in Louisville, we sold a Simmental heifer we had raised for$40,000 straight out of the stalls! One that I will not forget ... winning the 2002 National Junior Shorthorn Show. I had been in a car accident just beforethe show and had no plans of going, but after the accident, I decided to take my Lucky Charm heifer. What do you like best about the industry you are in? Let’s get real! Its not about the win pictures or how muchmoney is spent. It is all about giving juniors the opportunity to learn a work ethic they will use later on in life. It’s aboutperseverance and ensuring a future for the agriculture Industry. Something you want people to know? I want people to understand there are a lot of individuals who are worse offthan me. I hope I can continue to bring awareness to people of the MS disease. My MS is being very aggressive towardsmy cognitive skills, which in turn makes it harder for me to think logically at times and process information. To sum it allup, this greatly effects my disposition. Something I am working very hard at over coming. What hurdles are you overcoming with your health? Currently, I am working on a year plan with my doctor andreceiving treatments of infusions every four weeks. I will be receiving a re-evaluation this February. I do want everyoneto know that I am doing okay. My heath is my focus so I can get back on the show road very soon! Something to keep in mind: It doesn’t matter how much you spend ... it actually has nothing to do with how youwill place. Showing and winning is about putting in the hard work and being a part of this industry. Striving to make thenext generation of cattle better than today’s. Never lose sight of what our purpose is as breeders in this great industry. Words of advice for Juniors: Remember to keep your ears open and mouth shut. You will never be able to learn ifyour mouth is running. As you sit back, listen and learn, you will see hard work pays off.
Erin and I want to thank everyone for their love and continued support.
Nolyn Holley has traveled coast-to-coast helping individuals all over the country with their show cattle. He is known forbeing modest and not-too-proud to work on all types and kinds of cattle. His dedication to juniors in the livestock indus-try is second to none. Nolyn has always taken a little more time with young exhibitors than most.
When Nolyn started doing his own clinics, one thing he would always point out to his students is the misconceptionsthat working on show cattle is hard work. He explains fitting and grooming as simply accentuating great parts of an ani-mal and hiding their flaws. It was that simple. He wants each junior to learn as much as they can to keep the love of thecattle industry alive. Nolyn always stresses the first thing juniors need to be able to do is evaluate cattle. At the age of 15, Nolyn was told he had a stroke, which eventually proved to be a misdiagnosis. It was actually earlysigns of Multiple Sclerosis (MS). Nolyn eventually started to find several other signs that something wasn’t right with his health. The last straw was whenhe noticed his vision was off while sorting bulls. A bull had gotten by him and he didn’t even notice it until the bull wasstanding right in front of him. After that, Nolyn picked-up the phone and called Miss Erin to have her schedule him adoctor’s appointment. After several rounds of testing, Nolyn was finally diagnosed with MS in 2009. At first, Nolyn was frustrated. He felt since he was diagnosed with MS, friends and family would have two common feel-ings ... a sense of feeling bad for him, or a sense of incompetence or in other words, a handicap. As anyone who knowsNolyn, the sky is the limit. He does not like anyone or anything holding him back from doing what he loves. And in typ-ical Nolyn fashion, he isn’t letting MS get in his way either!
It speaks volumes of a persons character when others make time in their busy schedules to help someone out. This past November, the NolynHolley Cattle Show & Benefit was a great success. Watch for details on the 2014 show on Facebook, under Nolyn Holley Benefit Show.
Nolyn Holley
Family: Wife, Erin; Son Lawtyn (5) & Daughter Lakyn (4) Location: Bowling Green, OhioBest two words to describe Nolyan: Cow Man. Nolyn is a strong cow man that has excelled in the show ring as wellas having a lasting impact on many juniors across the country. He is known for being a great fitter, honest cattlemen andgreat friend!
Nolyan stands for perseverance, hard earned successand is always happy to help a junior showman. He hasearned the highest honors from his peers ... RESPECT.

Brian MartinShow Cattle
Owners: Brian, Sherri, Stock & Saige Martin Location: Hereford, TexasCow Herd: 350 Charolais and Crossbred females. About 1/3 of the herd is AI’d, with the other 2/3
carrying embryos. Years in the industry: 23
Marketing Opportunities: Brian Martin Show Cattle will sell most their steers and heifers PrivateTreaty all year round. In June 2014, they will be having their first cow sale with Dustin Glover inOklahoma. Watch for more information on their website - www.brianmartinshowcattle.com
How we got started in the club calf industry: Right out of high school, I went to work for BobbyMaddox. I worked for several families that showed cattle. When we settled in Hereford working for theWall family, I started buying cows and raising show cattle.
All-time favorite donor? As of right now, the 105 cow we own with Reimann Ranch. She produced Stock’s 2013 Fort Worth Stock Show Grand Champion Steer that weraised. Sires that we are using? A majority of our calves will be sired by Man AmongBoys, Walks Alone and Monopoly. We are also using Walks This Way, Solid Gold,Smokin’ Bob and American Idol. Some champions we will never forget: There are several, but two that come tothe forefront are the back-to-back wins at the State Fair of Texas. In 2012, Stockshowed the Grand Champion Steer. Then in 2013, Saige won with her steer. It hadnever been done before. It’s also hard not to forget any of the champions from the
Fort Worth Stock Show. We have been fortunate to have six Grand Champions and threeReserve Grand Champion Steers.Proudest accomplishment to date: Our dream came true this past year when Stock’ssteer was named Grand Champion at the Fort Worth Stock Show; it was with a steer webred and raised as a family. The Fort Worth Stock Show is by far the biggest and best steershow to win, and it pays the most. We feel very, very fortunate to have accomplished somany things with one win. Daily hair care tip: Simply, just keep your animal’s clean. Where we live our climate is
very dry so we have to moisturize more frequently. We rinse and moisturize daily with Sullivan’s Kleen Sheen mixedwith a little extra conditioner. And we do a lot of brushing. I mean a lot!Favorite barn tool: I personally love a Sullivan Stimulator Comb. Sullivan’s new Smart Sensation has become a barnfavorite as well. We think they are awesome. The more you use them, the better the steers or heifers hair will work.Future goals: As a family, we hope to have both kids, Stock and Saige, win the six Texas majors - Fort Worth StockShow, State Fair of Texas, San Antonio Livestock Show and Rodeo, Houston Livestock Show, Rodeo Austin and San
Angelo Stock Show & Rodeo. Stock has luck on his side this far, he is in the seventh gradeand has already won three of the six. As a club calf producer, I hope to continue to pro-
duce champions for my customers year after year.
As Described by the Martin Family ...
Consistently raising or showing champions at the strongest shows in the nation. No one is as talented
as the Martin Family at doing both.

we have created here at Sullivan’sin the last five years.
Like Us On ...
Hair Savior™ is just that! Finally, a liquid adhesive breakdown that is healthy for your leg hair.Hair Savior™ adhesive breakdown features a proprietary blend of the purest, mild cosmetic grade
plant-based ester technologies to naturally attack and gently remove adhesives and touch-ups awayfrom the hair. These specific plant based surfactants have been specially identified for their uniqueability to naturally counter-act the tackiness of adhesives, changing their rubberized molecular resinstructure to gently dissolve the bond from the hair without any harsh stripping action.
This properly balanced pH formula prevents heavy, oily residues and will not create heat. Containsthe Sullivan’s VITA HAIR™ nourishing vitamin package. Hair Savior™ is the first liquid adhesivebreakdown product with added hair vitamins to hydrate and regenerate the hair. Mild and gentle, noharsh chemicals like other removers.
Hair Savior™ ... the showman’s choice for repetitive show schedules and leg hair health!
The first livestock shampoo to scientifically produce hair volume! Vita Hair Volumizer™ Foaming Shampoo is formulated with a natural plant-based proprietary
surfactant technology which creates an opposite acting polar electrical charge within each hair strandthat actually pushes every hair follicle apart. This prevents the hair from sticking together, and actu-ally springs it loose, making each hair follicle stand on end for a noticeable difference in hair volumeand body.

Denver is the Yards and the display bulls.
This issue offers many exciting features including "One Man's Opinion" and our Winter Show Preview.
With the New Year, The Showtime's plans to cover more open shows including coverage of Kansas City and Louisville. We will also be highlighting more seedstock operations such as one of our new Hall of Fame inductees: Bob Funk and Express Ranches. We strive to be a publication for all ages. There is something for everyone.
Whether you prefer to read The Showtimes in print or online, we are the best of both worlds.
We look forward to seeing what 2014 has in store!
Happy New Year,
Brian J. ReidOwner/Editor
The National Western Stock Show marks the beginning of a new year! For some, Denver is just another show in a long list of
shows that we exhibit at every year. For me, long before there were great shows to attend like Kansas City, Louisville, Ft. Worth or Omaha, there was Denver.
The National Western was one of the only shows I knew about outside of county fair when I was very young and just starting out in 4-H. I always enjoyed a day away from school and taking in the National Western with my family. We would walk through the barns, exhibits, cattle shows and end the day by taking in the rodeo. A few years I had the opportunity to spend a day in the yards working Hereford bulls. Before long, I was exhibiting steers, hogs, lambs and goats in Denver. The Denver Fat Steer Show was the one show that I always looked forward to the most! There was nothing more exciting than working my steers leading up to the show. Today, my favorite part about

Satisfied Cimarron
Customers!
“I’ve pulled about every brand of trail-er over the years at one time or another but when it came time to buy a trailer for my kids it was a pretty easy choice!
The folks at Cimmaron have put together about the best you could ask for in a trailer, they’ve thought of things that you don’t think about till you need them, and we couldn’t be happier with ours, great people with a great product!”Dan Kelley - Yukon, OK
“My favorite feature of my trailer is the roof and air ride. It is so much cooler and quieter. The ride is incredible. Any-time you can reduce stress, that is very important. Combine that with the extra look, detail and quality that these trailers have, makes going down road the simple. I personally think they are the best trailer on the market!”Kirk Stierwalt - Leedey, OK
“I purchased my First Cimarron Trailer two years ago and absolutely love everything about this trailer. It pulls great
and has all the custom features you would ever need. Great staff, Great People, Great Trailer. “ Kevin Wendt - Irwin, OH

The man behind Express.BY LISA REID (INTERVIEW WITH BOB FUNK)
You can tell a lot about a person by their handshake. From our initial meeting with Robert Funk, Owner of Express Ranches, by his stalls at Louisville, we were instantly drawn to the man’s success, knowledge and
kindness. He exuded a confidence that we knew we wanted to share with our readers. With a tip of his cowboy hat and a firm handshake, we were well on our way to discovering the story of Express Ranches.
Based out of Yukon, Oklahoma, Express Ranches is not only the largest seedstock cattle operation in the United States for the third year in a row, but part of an empire that was started from the ground up by Washington native Bob Funk. The combination of Funk’s passion to succeed and desire to help others has led to record breaking bull sells, multiple champions, a one of a kind scholarship program, and many more successful endeavors. When asked what the inspiration was behind Express, Bob lit up and shared how it all started with a childhood dream.
Bob has been around cattle all of his life. In fact,
he worked for 11 to 12 years on his cousin’s dairy farm in order to pay for college. He obtained his bachelor's degree in business administration and theology; followed by graduate studies at the University of Edinburgh, Scotland in business administration and theology, and completed his master's degree at Seattle Pacific University. While Bob would continue on to receive three honorary doctorate degrees from SPU, Oklahoma Baptist University and Southern Nazarene University, his desire to obtain land and one day own a ranch of some magnitude led him to Yukon,

Oklahoma. Twenty years, thousands of acres, and multiple businesses later, Funk has not only fulfilled, but beyond exceeded, his childhood dream.
Express Ranches is composed of four ranches located in Yukon, El Reno, Shawnee, and Perkins, Oklahoma. Together, the ranches approximate 20,000 acres. According to “The Land Report: 100 Largest Landowners in the United States,” where Funk is listed 54th, “ In addition to his Oklahoma holdings, Funk enjoys a considerable presence in Northern New Mexico, where he owns the legendary UU Bar.” Bob’s love for his New Mexico Ranch is obvious as he describes the 180,000 acres that house commercial cattle, 7,000 elk, bear, deer, wild turkey and mountain lions. It is developing as one of the largest elk hunting ranches in the world. However, while his status as a landowner is impressive, his presence in the cattle industry strikes closer to home.
The classy look of the “EX” and color blue tied to Express Ranches has become a staple brand image at cattle shows and sales. It is practically impossible to walk through the Angus or Limousin barns at a national show without taking notice of Funk’s crew’s impressive, top quality setup. Bob’s philosophy on marketing is to always project yourself as one of the larger operations – whether you are or are not. Funk shared, “When it comes to business, the most important thing is marketing. The second most important thing is the actual production.” Express
Ranches emerged with the bull head as its first logo, but later updated to the better known “EX”. This logo is found everywhere from their signs and jackets to the freeze brand on their cattle’s left shoulder. Not only has Express Ranches nailed Bob’s number one business requirement, the production aspect of his first rate cattle operation speaks for itself.
Express Ranches is composed of high quality Angus and Limousin cattle which incorporate both good EPD’s and phenotype. While these have to have EPD’s to fit the country’s needs, as Express sells a lot of cattle in Nevada, Colorado, Arizona and Texas where there are large pastures, they have to be phenotypically correct in order that they don’t break down with age. Heading up the cattle operation at Express Ranches is its President Jarold Callahan. According to Bob, “Jarold is one of the finest evaluators of cattle in the industry.” He has a solid cattle and judging background including serving as the Oklahoma State University livestock judging coach for 11 years and judging 400 to 500 shows. His talent and expertise have contributed to Express Ranches' success, as he selects, sorts and monitors all of operation's cattle.
Bob and Express Ranches’ attention to detail and quality has placed them at the champion photo backdrop on numerous occasions. They have produced three triple crown winners and just recently sold the highest selling Angus bull of all time for part

interest at $330,000. While multiple calves have had a special impact on Bob’s life, when asked to pinpoint his all time favorite, the bull 1407 makes his way to the top. 1407’s low birth weight and high growth numbers not only put Express Ranches on the map, but revolutionized the Angus breed. Bob’s cattle operation expands farther than the show ring, sales and with breeding. His desire to help others led to the creation of a scholarship program for the exhibitors of Express cattle.
For Bob, it was a simple fact of life – no scholarship, no school. Therefore, when he had the opportunity to design a scholarship program that not only encouraged youth to work hard, but also attend college, he jumped at it. Express Ranches’ program is a one-of-a-kind progressive scholarship that awards Express customers with scholarship money in accordance to the shows they win (i.e. county, state, regional, and national). Over the scholarship program’s 18 year history, Funk has awarded approximately 3.25 million dollars to 370 kids nationwide.
The Express name is not exclusive to the cattle industry. Express Employment Professionals is a successful human resource company that was founded by Funk nearly thirty years ago. Originally, Bob’s religious beliefs inspired him to be a preacher. While he could not see himself preaching from a pulpit and working inside all of his life, he has used his HR business as a type of ministry. Through his work, he is able to help people every day. To Funk, “Finding people a job is extremely rewarding.” He feels that in today’s world especially, it is crucial to keep our Christian values alive. All of Express’ conventions feature prayer breakfast as well as invocation at every meal.
Another avenue of the Express brand is the draft horse industry with Express Clydesdales. Bob’s passion for the horses developed when he was showing cattle in Canada and spotted two beautiful black Clydesdales with white blazes and feet. From there, he worked to develop the first six horse hitch in Oklahoma and has gone on to have three-time world champions and five-time

national champions.
Bob Funk’s passion to succeed has blessed him with the opportunity to give back in multiple facets of life. He is a franchise owner of the AAA hockey team the Edmonton Oilers and previously the AAA farm baseball team for the Texas Rangers, and is the agent to 11 PBR cowboys and 4 PRCA cowboys. Bob works hard to make life better for other people. He has a heart that beats to help others.
The positive impact that Bob Funk with Express Ranches has made is wide spread across multiple industries and lifestyles. Whether it is in the cattle barn, the human resource business, or aiding youth working hard to earn scholarship money, his desire to help others and be the best has had a domino effect. From recognizing the quality of his cattle and professional presence at shows to talking with him one-on-one, what started with a handshake has led us to discover some of the amazing things Bob Funk has accomplished; and leaves us excited to see what he will do in the future for the cattle industry. ▪

Former Kansas State Coach and Judge.BY SCOTT SCHAAKE
If someone would have asked me 40 years ago my career goals and where I would call “home” I am sure the role of University pro-fessor in Manhattan, Kansas was never on the radar. In fact my career is a result of encour-agement from friends and family to pursue a
profession in academia.
I am the oldest of four siblings and raised by conservative, honest, hardworking parents who in-stilled strong family values. Like all of us who were so fortunate to grow up on a family farm, I have vivid memories of our family working together and always willing to make sacrifices in order to keep the farm financially stable. I will never forget the early morn-ings spent in the soybean field hoeing weeds out, the long days spent on an open cab tractor with a six row cultivator throwing dirt to next year’s crop, and the hot days of summer putting 20,000 square bales in the barn. The first time Dad put me behind the steering wheel on the hay truck was an experience. I sat on a stack of books and could barely get the clutch to the floor. Dad would put the truck in gear, point me in the correct direction, and he would scurry to jump on the back and begin stacking hay as the loader deliv-
ered it to him. I learned quickly to never engage the clutch when traveling downhill and then out of fear, quickly let the clutch out and slam on the brakes. The result… was a load of hay and my father tumbling over the hood of the truck and landing on the ground in front of me. Fortunately, no one was seriously hurt.
I knew at a very young age that I had a real at-traction to the livestock portion of our operation. As a kid we would travel to Missouri to buy feeder pigs and would run them in the same feedlot as the cattle. It was a real treat when dad allowed me to skip school and travel with him to the Kansas City Stockyards to sell a load of fat hogs or cattle. I distinctly remember the activity and smell of the old yards and my father trying to deal with the commission companies.
At eleven years of age, my dad helped me select, halter break, and feed my first steer for the county fair. My steer, Cocoa, stood last in class at the fair and received a white ribbon from Dr. Miles McKee of Kansas State University, the judge. I was disappointed that day, not only for standing last, but also because that white ribbon meant that my steer was ineligible for the premium auction. Still, despite my disappoint-

ment, I committed myself that day to feed a better steer, to work harder the next year, and because of the impression Dr. McKee left on me, to judge shows someday.
I spent the entire day at ringside observing this legendary judge at work. I came to realize his passion, ability to educate, and his respect for exhibitors were unprecedented. Since that day, I have been fortunate enough to show under or observe some of the all-time greatest judges of our time including: Joe Lewis, Don Good, Dan Hoge, and a number of others. As a young exhibitor, I showed a few champions, of which I was very proud, but more often than not I didn’t take home the champion banner. I was always interested in the judge’s reasons for preferring another calf over my own. The comments made over the microphone were part of an essential education that I valued. I also realized that each judge had a different opinion as to which specific traits were more important or necessary in their evaluations. I always tried my best to take into consideration the comments of these learned judges when I selected my next year’s calves to show. All of these great judges, regardless of the type of calf they preferred, shared a common theme of professionalism, honesty, communication skills, and the ability to educate. These are the same principles that judges today aspire to and live by.
I will never forget the day my parents shipped me off to Manhattan, Kansas and enrolled me at Kansas State University. That same day my dad informed me that I would need to find a career outside of our op-eration because it was not big enough to support two families. That was a sad day for me and certainly a feeling of disappointment. I was not sure of a degree plan, but because of Dr. McKee and Dr. Good, I knew I wanted to be a part of the Animal Science program and a member of the judging teams. Kansas State has a rich tradition and some of the great leaders in Agriculture have been members of that program. As

a student at Kansas State I was surrounded by some of the most highly respected faculty and coaches in the country.
Upon graduation from KSU, I pursued gradu-ate work and livestock coaching duties at Clemson University and the University of Kentucky. As fate would have it, the coaching position at Kansas State would become available, and I have been honored to coach within a historic program behind eight legend-ary coaches since 1903. I have been blessed to coach some of the brightest students of which many are recognized today as leaders, and outstanding judges. My family today not only includes my wife and two sons, but also the more than 250 judging team mem-bers who have been part of our lives the past 21 years. My former students make me proud and they are the reason I enjoy my profession so much. Even though I have retired from coaching, I plan to continue my role as an educator at Kansas State.
Today, my wife of 28 years, Kandi, and sons, Shane and Shilo, and I aim to live by the same fam-ily values upon which I was raised. We work hard together as a family. My wife and I support our sons at youth sporting events and livestock shows. Our family has a passion for agriculture, its people, and we strongly support youth shows. I will never forget the day when my youngest son, Shilo, reminded me what junior programs are all about. After getting beat at a show where we took a steer and thought we had the quality to win, rather than pouting or throwing a fit he turned to me and said, “Dad, not much we can do about it now, the steer looked good, we did our best, and I had fun.” It reminded me that we do all this for our children because our children enjoy it, and for the Schaakes, it is truly a family event. ▪

88 THE SHOWTIMES JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2014
This is the season that sometimes I reflect on what I have done this past year, what I am doing now, and what I will be doing the next year. Sometimes we all need to be put into check… Check to see if we are on the right path of
success, wisdom, family, faith and the list goes on and on. With all the press we hear on the news right now with opinions on winners and losers, who’s right and who’s wrong, which side of the fence someone is on, all the politics and such, guns, free speech, gays and
straights, government, republicans and democrats, blah blah blah blah blah! Why can’t people just be people, maybe try to be a good person while they’re trying. You know this has nothing to do with livestock but livestock people are part of this thing we call “life” and they are definitely part of mine. The only way we as fathers, mothers, sons, daughters, brothers, sisters, or friends are going to change is to look in the mirror. Yes sometimes we need to revaluate ourselves in order to get better in whatever we are doing in life. So in this season of giving I would like to give you a few quotes that just maybe one of them might hit home and cause you to think of some things that you might fix, change, or work on in your own life. We as livestock people, I would hope are above the normal in today society and live more like the Americans of old because I don’t know about the rest of you but some of that blah blah blah crap that I mentioned earlier, quite frankly gives me the craps!

I graduated from Prairie Valley high school and am currently a freshmen at DMACC. My parents are Larry and Jill Alliger. The steer I showed that day was a steer that I had been very successful with all year and one of my favorite calves I've ever shown. I was bummed with how he did at the state fair
but getting reserve there with my other steer made it a good day, so I thought I still have Bones for Kansas city so I set my mind on that when the Royal came I was nervous when we pulled in. I was stalling by a really good steer and I saw some good steers out in the tie outs. I wasn't as nervous in my class but when division came I was really nervous. When Jimmy picked me for champion it all
started to hit me. In division Bones stopped putting weight on one of his back legs, so I kept trying to shift his weight. When we got back to the chutes we washed his hooves out with water that helped him for the final drive. After that it was just fun and when he picked me. I couldn't have been any happier. Bones made me very happy this year and I was sad to see him go but it was his time. I would like to thank Tracy Goretska for everything he has done for me this year. I could not thank him enough. Jake Campbell and Tyler McVay for helping at all those shows. I'd like to thank the rest of Goretska show steers crew as well as Jeremy Clark, Justin Morgan and Brett the manager. I'd also like to thank my parents for everything they have done for me. Without them, none of this would have been possible.

Winning Grand Champion Market Hog at the American Royal is something that I will cherish forever because it
is such a unique story on how everything came together. Growing up, I was raised on a sheep farm and showed sheep and swine in 4-H for ten years. Along with participating in 4-H, Raelynn (sister), Rhett (brother), and I traveled across the country showing at junior sheep and swine shows with our parents, Jay and Rachel. I am currently a sophomore at Purdue University so I quickly realized my time to show as a junior exhibitor was running short. I have never been to the American Royal and while deciding what show to attend, I realized that the age deadline for the American Royal was 20. I would be turning 20 in September so this was my last chance to show at the Royal and it happened to work out that my sister already had two lambs to take to the Royal. Without a doubt, I decided I wanted to show at the American Royal. My mom and I made a quick trip down to Wehmer’s Showpigs to look at a couple barrows. We quickly found a white barrow with blue spots and decided he was the one. He quickly became a barn favorite
and the whole family was attached to him. Raelynn and her friends gave him the name “Vinny”. After the summer, I headed back to school and without the help of my family, it would have been impossible for me to exhibit at the American Royal and I cannot thank them enough for their love, help and support. When it came time to weigh and check-in hogs, “Vinny” received the ear tag number 913, which happens to be my birthday, September 13th (9-13) so that was just another
cool factor. I never expected to win the America Royal, I honestly just wanted to show at one more junior show before it was too late. I couldn’t have asked for a better outcome. Besides the win, so many memories were created that I will cherish forever and you can’t
put a price on that. It was such an amazing experience and it will always have a special place in my heart because so many people came together to help me. In the end, it really isn’t about the win, it’s about cherishing the time with the people you love and the life God gave you. I don’t look at it as Jacinda Thompson exhibited the Grand Champion Market Hog, I think of it as The Thompson family exhibited the Grand Champion Market Hog at the 2013 American Royal.

NOWJunior Breeding Heifers
I’m Taylor Hett from Roggen, Colorado. I have been showing cattle since I was 8 years old. I didn’t start off with having a banner to my name. I would definitely say our family started from the bottom, we were the true definition of a “Freddy”. From having no background in agriculture, including the cattle industry, my dad Jim Hett gained a love and an
interest for the Maine-Anjou breed. With the help of his business partner Bud Gamel they established Blind Badger Ranch in Fort Morgan, Colorado. We have grown tremendously thanks to the help of Brian Fox and his wife Paula. Going from standing last in my class at the county fair, to being fortunate enough
to be selected Supreme Champion Junior Female at Louisville puts me at a loss of words! Though my dad wasn’t there to share the moment with me, due to my grandpa Bud Gamel being in the hospital, I was showing for them! I repeated in my head a thousand time while showing my heifer Joudy, “We are doing this for Dad and Bud!” This win was overwhelming and none of this ever would have been possible without the Nowatzke crew and our BBR crew. I would just like to thank Barry Nowatzke, Cash and Catherine Langford, Ryan Long, Jon Sweeney, Kayla Campbell, Brian Fox, Paul Hill, Justin Trupp, and everyone who has helped! Most importantly I would like to thank my Dad Jim and Grandpa Bud, it wouldn’t be possible without them!

I was seven years old when I walked into a ring for the first time. I was terrified. My brand-new size four Stetsons felt tight. My hands were sweating and the halter chain jingled as I gulped and found my way to the center of the fresh shavings. In a sea of
people, I saw no friends, but next to me I had my 723 pound partner. This was my initial experience in the show ring with my first Hereford heifer and I was convinced that I would never do this again.
Now, nine years later, I have shown more times than I can count, and I wouldn’t trade it for the world. It’s not only the showing that has captivated me; it’s also
the beef industry as a whole. The people I’ve met through the industry, the skills I’ve learned and the bonds I’ve made are all things that will last me a lifetime. It’s not very often that you can say you were a part of an industry so impactful. The most important thing I've learned growing up in the beef and show is how to work. It has taught me to put every ounce of effort into the projects I do, whether it’s in the showbarn, the show ring or even at school. It makes me want to put forth my best effort into everything I do. Because after all, if you’re not giving it your all, then why try? Work ethic is one skill that I’ve acquired through cattle that I will be able to use

for the rest of my life and for that I am thankful. However, being only one person, I simply cannot do all of the work by myself. There are a great number of people that have helped me substantially and have made a tremendously positive impact on my life. I will never be able to thank my Uncle and Aunt Jason and Kaycee Hoffman, my Grandparents Dennis and Dixie Hoffman, my parents, Randy and Stephanie Myers, and my Uncle Kirk and Aunt Raegan Hain enough. There are so many others that aren’t family, but they may as well be because I know they’d do anything for me, and I’d do anything for them. There are too many to mention, but there are a few that I have particularly close bonds with. Their names are Bob and Lauren May, Jon Gevelinger (Jon Jon), Jay Carr, Kyle Costerisan, Tommy Meek, Drew Feller, Kirk, Julie, Ky, and Kyra Steirwalt, and the entire Hoffman Ranch crew. These people have all done so much for me and expect nothing in return. So, to all of you, you will never know how thankful I am to have you be a part of my life.
As far as hobbies outside of cows, I am very involved in my school. I am currently part of the student council at Colusa High, am the Colusa FFA Chapter Reporter and play tennis. There is so much more that I would like to do. However, last year, I made the decision that doing a little less wouldn’t kill me and decided to focus more on my school work and my cows because I figured that those were the two things that were going to get me to college.
Now for what I’m sure you all want to hear about the… COWS. As I mentioned before, I started showing Hereford heifers when I was seven and fell in love. That year, I attended my first JNHE in Wisconsin with my Uncle Jason. That was just the beginning of Jason and
my travels. Since then we have gone to Kentucky, Kansas City, Denver and Grand Island all for different shows. The past couple of summers, we have also visited Montana, Idaho, and South Dakota on cattle buying trips. However my most memorable experience with Jason was when we went to Calgary, Alberta, Canada for the
World Hereford Conference. It was great to be able to meet people from all over the world that shared the same passion and love my family does…Hereford cattle. On the way home from Canada I had the fantastic opportunity to spend a couple days at Churchill Cattle Company helping Dale and Nancy Venhuizen, two of the nicest people on the face of the earth. I am very grateful to have had the good fortune to travel with my Uncle to learn from him, and to be able to spend quality time with him.
When I first started showing, the decision was made that I wouldn’t show Hoffman Ranch’s good Hereford heifers, so as not to compete with customers. Instead, we made several heifer purchases, from people such as Dale Kottcamp, Topp Herefords, and Mohican West. Two years ago, I came up with the idea of showing Angus heifers. After discussing it with my family, we decided showing Angus heifers was indeed a good thing. They are another English breed and would give us the opportunity to sell Angus bulls to customers that had the need and desire for them. Well, the next thing you know we were at Silveira Brothers looking for heifers. There was one I liked right away and was convinced that she was the one. When sale day rolled around, people were trying to talk me into buying a different heifer. For a minute they even had me convinced that I didn’t want the original one that caught my eye. At the end of the day, I stuck to my guns and bought the heifer I fell in
love with in the beginning. She went on to be the Reserve Champion Angus Heifer in the Junior Show at the American Royal in 2012. She has turned out to be my favorite show heifer and I couldn’t be happier with her. With that being said, I would like to give a special thanks to Silveira Brothers for their support over the last couple of years. Their long time family friendship was what made us head to them to buy my first Angus heifer. Our success together means a great deal to me.
I spent this past summer like I always do working on show cattle in Nebraska with my family, but this summer in particular was one I will never forget. Every day at 7 am I would go out to feed and rinse the show heifers and I thought they continued to look better and better every day. I had no idea of what was about to come. We were headed to Kansas City for my first NJAS, and the excitement was overwhelming. My four heifers were settled in and everything was going pretty good. Then the first show day came along and it was time to show my first heifer, my April, affectionately known as Bam Bam. She won her class and then went on to
194 THE SHOWTIMES
she was reserve in her division. Brad Holden showed a Line One heifer that I raised and she was also reserve in her division. That was very exciting. The Coleman family, also from California, had the Champion Polled heifer and Reserve Champion Horned heifer. Both bred and raised by Hoffman Ranch and both heifers I spent the summer working on. This summer was one for the books to say the least. It’s summers like those that teach me that all of my hard work and hours put in at the show barn, while my friends are home
win her division. It was beyond exciting. Then I showed my March and she too won her division. At this point, I was a shocked. The next day my other two heifers were first and second in their classes. Then it was time for the Champion Drive and I was the most nervous I had ever been in my life. I was showing my April and my friend Macy Perry was on the halter of my March. My April went on to be Reserve Champion Heifer. That was a feeling I will never forget, I can still hear the roar of the crowd. The only thing that would have made that day better was having my Grandpa Denny there to enjoy it with me. I called him a couple minutes after I got out of the ring and I’ll be honest, I totally feel apart. You see, my grandpa never misses big events in my life and to not have him there was hard for me.
A week later we headed back to Kansas City for the JNHE. I showed a Hereford heifer there and
going to the river and the movies, really pay off. The Hereford Junior National shows have given me the opportunity to meet families that I know will be a part of my life forever. The Skiles and Deppe families are two of them. Whether it be Montana Deppe taking me to McDonald’s at 10 pm in Denver because I was hungry, or me taking the Skiles girls to the JNHE dance or taking all three kids to ride the bull, I know that those families are always going to be there for me, as I will be for them.
Outside of the show ring, I do a lot of other things in Nebraska on the ranch. Any break from school that’s longer than three days more than likely you’ll find me on a plane headed to Thedford, Nebraska. I enjoy helping my grandpa and uncles do other ranch work. Whether its doctoring cows, branding calves, checking heats, or calving, I truly value being able to learn from them. There’s another

196 THE SHOWTIMES JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2014
reason I love going to Nebraska, that’s not cows, it’s my family. While I’m there I usually go from my Grandma Dixie and Grandpa Denny’s house to my Aunt Regan and Uncle Kirk’s, and finally to my Aunt Kaycee and Uncle Jason’s house and I love being with all of them. However Jason and Kaycee have two little bonuses and their names are Haxton and Kennedy. I adore them both and I try to spend as much time as possible with my little cousins. I love both of them as much as I love anything. Soon, Raegan and Kirk will have two little bonuses also as they are having twins.
The show business isn’t all I take part in; I also have a number of cows that I run in Nebraska. I had a Line One Cow, 7135, that I bought from my good buddy Jack Holden of Holden Herefords two years ago. I bought her bred and she had a heifer calf that I sold in the 2012 Hoffman Ranch sale for $19,000. The funny thing is, Jack ended up buying part of the calf back, so I like to tell him he paid me to take his cow. I have a large number of frozen embryos from 7135. After lots of soul searching, I decided to sell her in the 2013 Hoffman Ranch Female Sale . She sold for $30,000 to my friends and neighbors, Barry and Carrie Morrell. That was very exciting to say the least. I am blessed that my grandpa and uncle have helped and supported me with not only the cows, but everything I do. I am fortunate enough to be able to sell heifers and bulls in Hoffman Ranch Sales and my plan is to continue doing that.
A couple years ago on one of Jason’s and my summer cow trips, I bought a heifer calf from Mohican West Ranch in Montana. The same year in KC at the American Royal, I was made an offer I couldn’t refuse and I sold her. She ended up being the mother of the $90,000 high selling heifer in the 2013 Hoffman Ranch Female Sale. In some ways it made me wish I hadn’t sold her, but in this business you really never know what’s coming. So I didn’t regret it. You know what they say, you’ve gotta get it while the getting’s good.
One memory that will stay with me forever was being able to go to my first LEAD Conference this summer
with the AJAA. We went to New Orleans and were able to visit Angus ranches, the French Quarter, a plantation, and TONS of museums. I had a BLAST to say the least. I thought there would never be a group of people quite as special as my Hereford Family, but the Angus breed proved me wrong. The members of the Association were beyond welcoming and I have already made friendships and bonds that will last a lifetime. I am very lucky to be able to be a part of not one, but two tremendous breed associations.
To wrap up, I would like to pay a tribute to all the people who have helped and supported me over the years, in and out of the cattle business. My success at school, in the show ring, on the ranch, and in life in general, is due to the love and support of so many people and I’d like to sincerely thank them. I know this is something everyone says, but I mean it, I wouldn’t be able to do this without you. I’m not only talking about my family and people I know because of the cattle business, I’m talking about my friends and also my teachers through my years in school. They have all supported me and worked with me when I’m gone. Without them and their understanding, I wouldn’t be able to travel and be away from school as much as I am. Not only are they extremely supportive, but they are always very excited to hear the stories from my latest trips, especially when there is success to be told of. My parents, Randy and Stephanie, have helped and supported me in each and every endeavor I’ve made. If I ever need to get something done but I can’t do it by myself or I don’t have time, I can always count on them to help me get the job done. I appreciate all that they do for me. My friends at school are all vital to my life. I love every last one of them. ▪

and feeding the calves well before 5 am. At the time when I was showing, I dreaded waking up on those days. I was scared to death of what the day might hold in store for me. Show day stress is something few people get the chance to experience, and an aver-age passerby would even claim that we are most likely insane. There is just something special about showing cattle that is really hard to explain, and I believe that it has a huge impact on kids who partake in it. I per-sonally have seen it work wonders in preparing me for college.
College is a gigantic step for anyone who attends, and it will change your life forever. How you let it change your life is completely up to you. No longer will there be someone to watch your every move and keep you accountable, freedom! But how are you going to use that freedom, and what do cattle have to do with aca-
demics anyways?
Let’s just start right at the beginning. At the begin-ning of the year, which for us is around September, we go out on a search for the best steers and/or heifers our money can buy. It doesn’t matter whether we are visiting private ranches in other states, or auctions, or even online sales, we want to make a good solid in-vestment. Not only do we want that great animal, but we often want to build a relationship with the breeder so we can continue to get good cattle from them. Just as with calves, we have to spend time and effort find-ing the best education we can get. We have to identify what we want to do with our lives, what degree we want, and which university will provide us with the most opportunities to achieve greatness. Then once we have selected our college, we have to pick classes. Nobody just hands you your class schedule, instead they give you a list of what is required for your major. It is then up to you on how you go about selecting your coursework for each semester.
After you have purchased your animals, it is com-pletely up to you on how they will perform in the future. A steer can only go up or down from the time you buy them, and it’s all about how hard you are will-ing to work. I have seen too many people try to just
save thecowboymessage
“Even youths shall faint and be weary, and young men shall fall exhausted; but they who wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they will mount up with wings like eagles; they will run and not be weary; they will walk and not faint.” (Isaiah 40:30-31)

feed their animals all year, and then in the last two weeks, they work like crazy in an attempt to make their calves behave well and look good. I don’t care who you are, you can’t break a calf or grow and train hair in the last couple weeks before the show. To suc-ceed in a show, you must perform daily care, which means devoting all your free time to working your calves. Every single day, we have to continue to work with them on the lead, training them to perform well in the ring. Every day, we are out there rinsing or washing them, then training their hair as we blow them dry and comb in whatever our secret personal conditioning concoction is for the year. If you do all that, you will be ready when the shows come.
In the same way, a college student who wants to excel has to give up most of their free time and use it to learn. We are all given the same amount of time, from when classes start all the way to finals. In my time at Texas Tech I have seen many students on both sides of the spectrum, those who were there to work hard toward making a better future for themselves, and those who weren’t. I only survived because I applied those things I had learned showing cattle. Daily care. Each day we can decide whether to study and do homework, or do any number of things which will distract us. Of course there is a lot of time between then and finals, but that just means we have more time to get even better, not time to waste. We have to make a conscious effort to become better everyday. I saw firsthand the kids that decided to mess around all year, and then try to pull a good grade on the final by studying till they passed out the week before finals. The study areas that were usual-ly pretty empty and quiet, were suddenly packed to the brim. Those were the people who were trying to break that steer the week before the show.
Then when “show day” came, they were the ones who failed most of their tests. Meanwhile, those of us who had studied hard all year were taking it pretty easy. I won’t lie, finals week was still scary, but it was far worse for those who weren’t ready. That’s where another big lesson came in from showing cattle, handling stress. The pre-test anxiety I experienced was like nothing I have ever felt before, and I am so thankful that I had been exposed to high levels of stress in the past. A lot of college students break down during that time because they simply can’t
handle it. Fortunately, show day stress gave me a kind of ‘immuniza-tion shot’ that prepared me.
This brings me to my last point, finding good mentors. I know that there were many incredible men and women in my life that helped me along the way during my show career. Some were a little more forceful then others, but they all made me better. They showed me how to raise and ready a steer for show, how to fit, how to present my animals in the ring, and so much more. Sometimes all I needed was someone who would listen to me, and help me get through the tough times. My biggest advice for those who are going to be entering a college career, is to find those mentors. It doesn’t matter how tough you are, you need them. The mentors I had during my show career helped me grow both in my showing abilities, and spiritually. I will never forget the advice and teaching given to me by guys like Dean Link, or Shane Goss who made me a better man, not just a better steer jock. When I got to Tech, I searched for men like them who would continue to make me grow in my relationship with Christ, while also pushing me to perform well aca-demically. It was these men and women that I found there who encouraged me to “seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.” (Matthew 6:33) If we run towards God with all we have, everything else will come once we get our priorities straight.
Call me crazy if you like, but I know that my first semester of college would have been an entirely dif-ferent experience if I had not shown cattle. My time showing cattle taught me to work hard especially when it was not fun, spend time wisely, handle stress, and seek advice from good moral mentors. Just re-member, while it may seem like other kids are having more fun, they won’t be when the hammer comes down. Make sure you are ready, don’t waste what little time you are given. Yeah, it’s going to be hard, but if it was easy, anybody could do it.

For more than 80 years, the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo has been the heartbeat of the Southwest, beating pow-erfully with more than 27,000 volunteers who annually con-tribute their time, resources, and talent as part of the world's largest livestock exhibition, world's richest regular-season rodeo, and the Southwest's premier entertainment event.
Since the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo was estab-lished, it has made an impres-sive footprint on the livestock and entertainment industries and in the sport of rodeo. It also has played a notable role in enhancing the lives of thou-sands of young people in the state of Texas.

SALERECORDS
A look back at the organization.BY JOEL COWLEY, TX
Throughout the 1920s, the cattle industry began to expand along the Texas Gulf Coast. Despite two million cattle in the area, Houston ranked 37th among livestock mar-kets. When business leaders and cattlemen began discussing ways to capitalize upon the
tremendous potential of the region, they realized that no large cattle market or packing center had ever been established in a city that did not have a well-known livestock show. In January of 1931, seven Houston businessmen met for lunch at the Texas State Ho-tel and the Houston Fat Stock Show and Livestock Exposition was born. The first Show, a five day event conducted in the spring of 1932, drew an audience of 2,000 to the Democratic Convention Hall to view the cattle shows and partake of free BBQ and impromptu rodeos. The champion steer, exhibited by Texas A&M College, sold for $504. Despite losing $2,800, the show was heralded as a success and plans were quick-ly underway for the 1933 event.
So began an amazing organization, and one that I am proud to be associated with. The recent success of the Houston Livestock Show can be quantified in a number of ways. Over 2.5 million people visited the 2013 Show to enjoy a world class rodeo and concert, view the livestock and horse shows, shop, eat, become

educated on agriculture, and have fun at the carnival. Over 27,000 livestock show entries were received, 15,000 of which were from 4-H and FFA members from nearly all 254 Texas counties. In 2014, the Show will award over $12 million in scholarships, over $6 million in premiums and calf scramble certificates to junior exhibitors, and over $4 million in graduate as-sistantships and educational program grants. Accord-ing to a 2010 study conducted by Dr. Barton Smith, professor emeritus at the University of Houston, an-nual aggregate gross sales in the region are increased by $475 million and the equivalent of 7,200 full-time jobs are created because the Show exists. Making all of this possible are 28,500 volunteers giving freely of their time, talent and resources by serving on over 100 committees. Working side-by-side with a talent-ed and dedicated staff of 100, these volunteers plan, budget, and fundraise throughout the year to ensure success.
Though impressive, these numbers do not tell the entire story, as not all successes are easily quantifiable. What is the value of providing a sense of communi-ty to a metropolitan area of over six million people? What value can be placed on educating an urban population, many of whom are several generations removed from the farm, on the importance of agri-culture in their everyday lives? Though the monetary value of a four year Show scholarship is $18,000, what is the total value to a first generation college student who may not otherwise have had the means to attend college? What value can be placed on the experience of an exhibitor, who may come from a town where
the tallest building is a grain elevator, arriving in the fourth largest city in America to find that complete strangers - volunteers, auction buyers and donors - truly care about them?
Of the questions posed above, the last one is of par-ticular interest to me as I am a product of the junior livestock program. Having lost my father when I was eight years old and my mother when I was nine, my two brothers and I were raised by our paternal grand-parents. Though retired from the Colorado State Uni-versity livestock farm and living within the city limits on a fixed income, my grandfather made certain that we had the opportunity to participate in the 4-H livestock program. A 4-H leader for 46 years at the time of his passing, I often joke that my grandfather signed us up for 4-H before he enrolled us in school. Being rather timid and small for my age, I found it difficult to achieve confidence through sports. How-ever, raising market lambs taught me that responsible and dedicated effort produces results. The knowledge that I gained in raising and exhibiting livestock gave me the courage to participate in wool and livestock judging, where I developed critical thinking and com-munication skills. Without doubt, the junior livestock program laid the foundation for every success that I have enjoyed. And, just as I received the support and encouragement of others, our volunteers and staff provide the incentive and experience for thousands of young people to develop the same skill set and con-fidence that have served me so well. The seven men who met for lunch in January of 1931 could not have possibly envisioned what their efforts would produce.
Joel Cowley was announced as the president and chief executive officer of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo™ Monday, Aug. 5, 2013. Cowley joined the Show staff in 2005 as the executive director of agricultural competitions and exhibits.
In this role, he worked with approximately one third of the Show’s volunteer committees while overseeing aspects of the livestock show, horse show, wine show and auctions.
Prior to joining the Show, Cowley worked for Certified Angus Beef LLC, the not-for-
profit division of the American Angus Association, where he began as executive account manager in the international division and finished as assistant director of the foodservice division. Before his employment with CAB, he was a faculty member at Michigan State University, where he served as an extension beef cattle specialist. Prior to that, he was employed by Texas A&M University as a lecturer and livestock judging team coach.
An 11-year 4-H member in Wyoming and Colorado, Cowley was active in livestock
projects and a member of national champion 4-H wool judging and livestock judging teams. He first attended the Houston Livestock Show™ as an intercollegiate judging contestant in 1985 and has participated in every Show since 1988 as a coach, livestock judge or employee.
Cowley holds a bachelor’s degree in animal science from Colorado State University, a master’s in animal science from Texas A&M University and an MBA from Michigan State University.“I am very excited for the opportunity to be of greater
service to such a tremendous organization,” Cowley said. “Through the tireless efforts of volunteers and staff, and the generous support of sponsors and donors, the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo is able to fulfill its agricultural mission, entertain and educate guests, make a significant contribution to the local economy, and assist Texas youth in accomplishing their educational goals — I’m proud to be a part of it all.”
Cowley, his wife, Tammy, and two daughters live in Richmond, Texas.

weight management, and my own little exercise area, it came with it's own hiccups as well.
Not only did I put 3,000+ miles on our vehicles treking up and down the road multiple times a day, one night as my family sat down to dinner my mom realized she was missing her glasses. It took a split second to remember the last time she had seen them was when she was cleaning out a waterer in my best hog "Blue Bomber's" pen.
Needless to say we did not get dinner. After discovering the frames chewed and missing the glass in Bomber's pen, my mom and I spent over four hours sifting through shavings on the ground - fearing the hog would die from the ingested glass.
What we do for our animals. Whether it's working together as a family designing a temporary hog barn, adding mileage to a vehicle or working together long hours through stressful situations, the bonding created through showing livestock is irreplaceable.
Everyone has their stories. The ones that at the time were not at all funny; but looking back bring a smile to your face. The winter before my last Denver as a junior exhibitor was one of the coldest I remember. It seemed
snow and ice were a permanent landscape; and below zero temperatures didn't even tease about getting warmer.
With both cattle and hogs on feed for Denver, keeping everything warm and thriving was beyond a chore. As our barn is not heated, my family and I had to come up with an alternatertive situation for my hogs as they were getting frost bite on their ears and unable to gain weight.
Our solution was to relocate the hogs to my parent's company's heated shop that is about ten minutes from the house. While the "makeshift" hog barn was something to behold with green indoor/outdoor carpeting, nice pens, our portable cattle scale for
