Conventional Crosshead Arrangement
• Crosshead supported by the hoist rope and uses the winch ropes to help keep conveyances centered and guide it down the shaft.
• Provides head cover for the attached conveyance.
• Various conveyances for each task in the shaft such as personnel travel, concrete delivery, material movement, shaft inspection, etc.
– Each conveyance change requires removal off hoist hook before attaching new conveyance to hoist hook.
– Attached conveyance is only guided by crosshead and can rotate freely.

Opportunity for reducing the exposure to shaft risks
• Due to the requirement for ground freeze during shaft sinking, ice buildup on the shaft walls is a constant risk
• Primary exposure to this ice is during shaft travel, shaft inspections and during scaling activities
• Lack of robust overhead coverage created a situation where inspection and scaling could only be done from an enclosed bucket reducing the effectiveness of work out of the bucket.

Current Jansen Crosshead ArrangementWhy the change
• Completion of the sinking scope and transition to the shaft lining scope created the need for a new galloway and new rope arrangement.
– Created the opportunity to change the conveyance configuration
• Lining scope includes the requirement for slinging large plate down the shaft that must be well controlled.
• Contractor joint venture was able to bring in industry best practice.

Current Jansen Crosshead ArrangementWhat changed
• Crosshead still supported by the hoist rope and connected to the winch ropes as guides.
• Personnel bucket has fixed connection to hoist rope and will not be removed for the duration of the project
• Secondary conveyances can be attached directly underneath the personnel bucket eliminating the need to change conveyances as frequently and decreasing time required for changeover.
• Rotation of the conveyance can be prevented using lock arms.
• Additional rigging points under the personnel bucket provide multiple options for slinging equipment and gear.

Changes affecting operational exposure of personnel

• Rigid connection between buckets means the personnel bucket is always left on the hoist rope and all additional conveyances are designed to fit under it.
– Quicker availability of the cage in the event of an evacuation;
– Increased head cover during shaft inspections;– Eliminate hazard of repeated hooking and unhooking
of heavy master link and chain bridal from hoist hook.
• Rotation lock arms on crosshead which holds the personnel bucket and underslung equipment/gear.
• Multiple connection points for underslung pieces can reduce the chance of plate contacting a winch rope while lowering.
• Better overhead protection due to working under the personnel bucket instead of just the crosshead while in the shaft.
