Rest In Peace Maria de la Luz Cardenas Maria de la Luz Rodríguez Cárdenas, better known as “Lucy,” passed into eternal life on December 29, 2020. Lucy was well known as somebody who lovingly spent her life in the service of her family, her parish, her community and her diocese. Lucy was born to devout Catholics Tomás and Teresita Rodriguez in 1945. Her first twelve years of education were spent at Laredo’s Ursuline Academy, where the religious sisters taught her to live the school’s motto “Serviam,” meaning “I will serve.” At the young age of 14 Lucy began teaching CCD at both the parishes of Christ the King and Our Lady of Guadalupe! After graduation from Ursuline Academy, Lucy continued her education at Texas Women’s University (TWU) in Denton, Texas. During her time there she was very active in the Catholic organizations Legion of Mary and Newman Club. In her junior year, in 1966, she suffered the heartbreak of the death of her beloved father. Later that year, Lucy became a postulant in the Central Province of the Ursuline Order, with the hopes of becoming a religious sister. Lucy greatly enjoyed her time with the Ursuline Sisters, benefitting both from her continued education and her spiritual growth, but after two years she discerned that God was not calling her to religious life. She returned to TWU where she earned degrees in history, government, education and Spanish. Then she was hired by Laredo Junior College (which became Laredo Community College), and over the next 35 years taught world history, women’s history, American history, the history of world religions and the history of Laredo. Her first year at the college Lucy met another instructor, Alberto Patricio Cárdenas, who was also a devout Catholic. Within a year they were married and became registered parishioners of St. Patrick’s! This was before we had a church, and the Masses were being held in the cafeteria of Mary Help of Christians School! Lucy has served the Church in many ways all her life, even as a contributor in the writing of church documents on the laity, on marriage and on family. She has been very active in many important roles for the Diocese of Corpus Christi, and after its founding in 2000, for the Diocese of Laredo. Most notable in
this diocese was her work for Catholic Social Services (now Catholic Charities), the Family Life Office and her seven years as Chancellor of the Diocese. Lucy and Alberto spent 25 years in marriage preparation ministry, and they both were invited by Bishop James Tamayo to become members of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulcher. Following the death of her beloved husband Alberto, Lucy was inspired to begin a bereavement ministry here at St. Patrick’s, to help those who, like her, were hurting from the loss of a loved one. Lucy is survived by her two brothers, her three children, 11 grandchil-dren and numerous other relatives. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Chancellor Lucy R. Cárdenas Diocese of Laredo Cathedral Restoration Fund (San Agustín Cathedral, 1901 Corpus Christi St., Laredo, Texas 78043) or the Marissa C. Keene Memorial Scholarship at St. Augustine High School (1300 Galveston Street, Laredo, Texas 78040). A private Mass (family only) for the repose of her soul will be celebrated at St. Patrick Church at 11 am on Jan. 11th, but it may be seen live-streamed on our website, May God grant her eternal life, and consolation to those who knew her.

Holy Mass All of our regular Masses are open to the public (see front cover). Everyone over the age of 2 must wear a facemask. If you are feeling sick, coughing or sneezing, please stay at home at this time. There is currently no obligation to attend Mass. All our Mass-es can be seen online at our website: stpatricklaredo.org
Confessions
Confessions will be in the main church Monday and Wednesday at 7:30 pm, and Saturday at 2 pm. Confessions will be in
the parish hall 30 minutes before each Sunday Mass. You must wear a face-
mask and stand in line with social distancing while waiting for confes-
sion.
Sunday Bulletin Our weekly bulletins have articles and the latest announcements for our parishioners. They are available in our church and in a box in front of the parish office. You can also see our bulletins online at our website: stpatricklaredo.org
For all other questions, please call our office dur-ing the hours listed on the front page. Donations can be dropped off at the slot in the door of the parish office, or you can sign up for easy online giving at our web-site. If you need to visit our office for any reason, you must wear a facemask, and do NOT visit if you are sick! Remember the beautiful advice of St. Padre Pio, “Pray, hope and don’t worry!”

Wednesday of the month. This
Holy Hour of Eucharistic devotion will be held from 7:30
p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in the church. Confessions will be available
during this Holy Hour.
Next Adoration date is set for January 20, in English. Don’t miss
this awesome and beautiful opportunity to pray with your Community. We are very excited
and blessed to be able to have Adoration in the Church. We must follow all rules and regulations the same as we do
during mass times. Everyone must wear a mask and seat six feet apart unless you live in the same household. We also need four to six volunteers to stay after adoration to sanitize the church
pews.
Únase a la comunidad de San Patricio para una hora de exposición, y adoración en español cada primer
miércoles del mes, en la iglesia de las 7:30 p.m. a 8:30 p.m. Se ofrecerán
confesiones durante la Hora Santa. La próxima Adoración Eucarística será el miércoles, 20 de enero en in-

Descanse en paz María de la Luz Cárdenas
María de la Luz Rodríguez Cárdenas, más conocida como “Lucy”, pasó a la vida eterna el 29 de diciembre de 2020. Lucy era conocida como alguien que pasó su vida con amor al servicio de su familia, su parroquia, su comunidad y su diócesis. . Lucy nació de los devotos católicos Tomás y Teresita Rodríguez en 1945. Pasó sus primeros doce años de educación en la Academia Ursulina de Laredo, donde las religiosas le enseñaron a vivir el lema de la escuela "Serviam", que significa "serviré". ¡A la temprana edad de 14 años, Lucy comenzó a enseñar CCD en las parroquias de Cristo Rey y Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe! Después de graduarse de la Academia Ursulina, Lucy continuó su educación en la Universidad de Mujeres de Texas (TWU) en Denton, Texas. Durante su tiempo allí estuvo muy activa en las organizaciones católicas Legion of Mary y Newman Club. En su tercer año, en 1966, sufrió la angustia de la muerte de su amado padre. Más tarde ese año, Lucy se convirtió en postulante en la Provincia Central de la Orden de las Ursulinas, con la esperanza de convertirse en hermana religiosa. Father of goodness and love, hear our prayers for the sick members of our community
and for all who are in need. Amid mental and physical suffering may they find conso-
lation in your healing presence. Show your mercy as you close wounds, cure illnesses,
make broken bodies whole and free downcast spirits. May these special people find
lasting health and deliverance, and so join us in thanking you for all your gifts. We
ask this through our Lord Jesus who healed those who believed. Amen!
