Mass Obligation Dispensation Extended
Archbishop Blair has extended the dispensation from
the Sunday obligation through Tuesday, February 16,
2021.
Mass from St. James Church is broadcast weekly on
YouTube.com. To view the YouTube Mass or for com-
plete Mass attendance protocols, please see the parish
website, www.stjamesmanchester.org.
Please be reminded that the requirement to wear a face
mask when in church pertains to everyone
and includes private prayer time, adoration
as well as Mass attendance.
The Online Giving option available to all parishioners
is an easy, convenient and secure way to make regular
offertory donations. In addition, Online Giving may
also be used to make donations on Holy Days, for sec-
ond collections (i.e., Saint James School, seasonal shar-
ing and St. Vincent de Paul) as well as Archdiocesan
collections which occur throughout the year. Taking
advantage of Online Giving eliminates the need to
write checks and keep track of envelopes. It also bene-
fits the parish because of the consistency of the support
and it eliminates the cost of printing and mailing enve-
lopes. To learn more or to sign up go to the Parish web-
site, www.stjamesmanchester.org; scroll to the bottom
of the page and click on Online Giving. If you have
questions or need additional information, call Marisa
Howard, business manager, 860-643-4129.
JUST A REMINDER…
When dropping off donations or items for the rectory,
please use the slot in the door. Please do not leave
anything in the black USPS mailbox on the building.
Thank you for your cooperation.

on Saturday, January 23rd, in the St. James
Church parking lot from 9 a.m. to noon. For

Do you shop on Amazon.com? Amazon's charitable
giving program, AmazonSmile, will donate a percent-
age of your total Amazon purchases to Saint James
School at no additional cost to you! Simply type http://
smile.amazon.com/ch/06-0653122 into your website
browser and begin shopping. Or, visit http://
smile.amazon.com and, when prompted to select a
charity, enter 06-0653122 in the search box (or "St. James
Parish Corporation," which allows your donation to go
right to the school's direct fundraising account).
Entering Amazon through the “Smile” link gives you
the same products, same price, same service as Ama-
zon.com but with the extra bonus of supporting Saint
James School. We thank you for your consideration of
support.
RECTORY CLOSED
Please note the rectory will be closed
on Monday, January 18th, in
observance of the Martin Luther
King, Jr. holiday.
MISSALETTES AVAILABLE FOR PARISHIONER
PERSONAL USE
Missalettes are now available at the entrances of the
church for parishioners to take home. We ask that you
take one and bring it back and forth with you each time
you attend Mass. Considering the restrictions we are
observing because of the coronavirus, once you take a
missalette, please don’t leave it behind in church.
EVERYDAY STEWARDSHIP - RECOGNIZE GOD IN
YOUR ORDINARY MOMENTS
Christ Is Anything but Ordinary
We’re about to dive headlong into week two of Ordi-
nary Time, and we need to admit, after the hustle and
bustle of the holidays, things are indeed looking
more ... ordinary, at least in our spiritual lives.
The transcendent highs of the Christmas season are flat-
lining a bit and the vivid imagery of the Nativity scene
has faded. The solemn anticipation of the Advent sea-
son is by now a distant memory.
Are you bored yet?
Here’s a secret: I think that Ordinary Time can actually
be quite extraordinary, if we’re really living out our
baptismal call.
In today’s Gospel, Jesus point-blank asks Andrew, who
is following him after hearing John the Baptist’s testi-
mony: “What are you looking for?” He’s asking us the
same question.
What are you looking for? Why are you following me?
Is it for the Christmas cookies and the Advent carols? Is
it for the King’s Cake on the Epiphany? Is it for the feel-
ing we get on Christmas when we just know God has
done a wondrous thing?
None of those things are bad, but they are not what An-
drew was looking for, and they were not what Christ
promised him when he said, “Come, and you will see.”
Andrew was looking for the Messiah — the One who
makes even Ordinary Time extraordinary. The One
who can sanctify the longest and dullest of to-do lists,
on the longest and dullest of days. The One whose
peace can reign in our homes on January 25, not just
December 25.
Remember what you are looking for. Come, and you
will see.

BIRTHRIGHT NEEDS VOLUNTEERS
Birthright is an emergency pregnancy service offering
free pregnancy tests, friendship counseling, and practi-
cal support. Our guiding principal: It is the RIGHT of
every pregnant woman to give BIRTH and the RIGHT
of every child to be BORN. Birthright volunteers have
served in Connecticut since 1972. Training is provided.
Thousands of expectant mothers have received the help
they need to bring their babies into the world!
Birthright is also in need of gently worn maternity and
baby clothing. There are seven Birthright locations in
our state. Please call 1-800-550-4900 for information or
to arrange for a drop off.
THE SOCIETY OF SAINT VINCENT DE PAUL
assists your neighbors in need. The Socie-
ty provides assistance in the form of food,
utilities, and oil, thanks to the generosity
of Saint James parishioners. Please
consider a donation to assist those in need. Donations
marked “SVDP” can be placed in the collection basket,
and checks should be made payable to “Society of St.
Vincent de Paul”. Thank you in advance for your
support!
GOSPEL MEDITATION - ENCOURAGE DEEPER UN-
DERSTANDING OF SCRIPTURE

Sunday in Ordinary Time
Our faith is not just about ideas. It’s really about having
an encounter with God and, in particular, the Risen
Christ! Once we give ourselves over to the notion of
God’s presence, we have to train ourselves to listen for
God’s voice and be attentive to God’s call. Having com-
panions on our faith journeys is so incredibly important
as they can help us fine-tune our listening skills and dis-
cern God’s voice from others we may be hearing. Faith is
all about having these profound encounters not only
with God but with our brothers and sisters, and creation
itself. Anyone or anything that is alive with God’s pres-
ence becomes an occasion for God to speak and call us to
deeper graces and experiences. “Come, and you will
see.”
The example and teaching of Jesus, the lives of the saints,
those living among us and those glorified in heaven, and
the wonder and beauty of creation can all serve to help
us listen more clearly and assist in positioning ourselves
for this profound God meeting. It is an encounter that
can quickly and easily lead to a friendship and intimate
intertwining of our souls to their Maker, making a claim
on us like no other. Then, the Word of God moves from
being just a body of ideas to something we simply accept
and do. The person of Jesus Christ swiftly moves from
being just a good prophet in word and deed to the incar-
nate presence of God Himself, the Lamb of God. The
voice leads us to the Person behind it.
The Gospel is hard to follow. We can intellectually de-
bate whether what Jesus said is really what we are asked
to do. The Gospel ideas do not always make sense in our
practical, secular world. The person of God always does.
We can debate the practicality and sense of ideas and
doing so often keeps the more difficult ones at a safe dis-
tance away from us. Jesus said to love our enemy, but
we really don’t need to do that, our minds try to con-
vince us. It just doesn’t make sense. Yet, if we are truly in
love with the God who is behind the voice of those
words, they make perfect sense. Our deep and intimate
love of this God would even find us laying down our
lives for Him if necessary. Speak Lord, your servant is
listening.©LPi

Second Sunday in Ordinary Time
Who is a Parishioner of Saint James Parish?
While the answer may seem obvious to some, others fre-
quently ask for clarification on requirements for being con-
sidered a parishioner. We hope the following helps those
who may be unsure.
First, a parishioner is formally registered with Saint James
Parish. A faithful parishioner attends Mass regularly, par-
ticipates in church activities, and follows the Canon Law
admonition to contribute to the support of the parish.
Parishioners have their children baptized here and enroll
them in our CCD program. Assuming they meet other re-
quirements, they are eligible to receive parish certificates
enabling them to serve as Godparents or Confirmation
sponsors. They may be married here, and they may have
their funerals here.
Sometimes people assume they are parishioners because
they’ve been coming here for years, although they may
have never formally registered. If you’re not sure if you
are registered, please call Carole at the parish office,
860-643-4129.
CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL COLLECTION 2021
The Catholic High School Collection, occurring in all
parishes of the Archdiocese on the weekend of January
23/24, supports the outstanding education offered at
our Catholic secondary schools by providing funds for
tuition assistance, technology enhancements, curricu-
lar improvements, and marketing, all of which are so
critical during this ongoing pandemic. Please consider
investing in the exceptional academics, solid faith for-
mation, and spirit of service at our high schools by
making a gift to this year’s Catholic High School Col-
lection on January 23/24.
ORDINARY TIME
Ordinary time is the longest season of the liturgical year.
It begins the Monday after January 6, the Epiphany, and
goes until the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday, the be-
ginning of Lent. That period can last anywhere from
five to eight weeks, depending on when Easter is cele-
brated. Ordinary time picks up again the Monday after
Pentecost Sunday and last from twenty-three to twenty-
seven weeks, until the end of the liturgical year, the Sat-
urday before Advent begins.
Why the name ordinary? “Ordinary” is not in contrast
to “extraordinary” or “special” but rather stresses the
Latin language notion of “ordinal” or numbered Sun-
days. The Latin title for the season, tempus ordinarium,
conveys the sense that this time of the year is measured
or numbered time. Measured time can allude simply to
the numbered Sundays, or the notion that these Sundays
are a “measured” time to deepen and immerse ourselves
completely in the realities of Jesus’ incarnation, ministry,
passion, death, and resurrection.
Ordinary time offers us the measured opportunity to
connect the ordinary lived experiences of our lives with
those of Jesus, who modeled for us how to live a truly
human existence. As we experience the season of ordi-
nary time, let us immerse ourselves in the extraordinary
task of deepening our relationship with Christ in the
ordinary events of life.
