DEAR PARISHIONERS, I am sure that by now all of you have taken down your Christmas deco-rations at home and stored them away until the next Advent/Christmas season. Most likely, the household furniture is back in order and regular schedule of activities has resumed. Look around the Church and you will notice that all the decorations are put away and that we are back to a plain worship space.

In a way, it is kind of sad to see all of the festive decorations gone and the holiday season come to an end. I say this because, unfortunately, for some people and perhaps for many households, Christmas is the only time that their faith seems to come alive. But, when Christmas is over, they take everything down and put it away in storage. The same thing seems to happen with their faith. Their faith gets taken down and put away for another year.

This Sunday marks the beginning of Ordinary Time. What does this mean exactly, “Ordinary Time?” Does it mean that this time is not special? Does it imply that we can go back to behaving the way we did before the special seasons of our liturgical year? The answers are “No” and “No.” Ordinary Time is special and it demands that we progress in our faith expression and advance in our mission as Christian disciples.

I have to admit that the name “Ordinary Time” gives us false impres-sions. Because of the term “Ordinary,” it gives us the idea that this particular season of the Church year is of lesser importance or of no particular significance in regard to the other seasons we celebrate. The liturgies may not contain bells and incense but they are still high and holy Masses. They still call us to live ex-traordinary lives.

Marked by the color green, which is the color of life and hope, we are invited to really engage in Jesus’ mission. In this season we do not have a focus on the Lord’s ultimate return nor his birth as we do in Advent and Lent. Nor is our focus on His passion, death and resurrection. It is now, during this time, that we focus on the Lord’s life with his disciples and, therefore, with us. We, through our baptism, share with Him in his mission as Suffering Servant.

As we go to work each day, or to school, or participate in the world in any way, we must go forward with the light of Christ alive in our hearts. We must face each day; confront each obstacle; and challenge each person to live out the extraordinary gift of faith. This is not ordinary, by any means.

To live in a world that contradicts our faith values is not easy. We do not enjoy suffering or persecution or rejection, but we are filled with hope as we proclaim the Good News to the world. For, if we suffer with Him, we shall also reign with Him.

The responsorial psalm sums up our Christian Spirituality. At all times we must proclaim, “Here am I, Lord, I come to do your will.” Can we honestly say that we proclaim this spirituality to be ours, not just at Christmas time, nor at Easter time, but at all times? God wants from us a humble and obedient heart at all times.

As we move forward into this “Ordinary Time” don’t treat your faith like a Christmas tree ornament only to take it down to pack it away with the intention of bringing it out again next Christmas. At the beginning of this Ordi-nary Time the Lord calls all of us, through our baptism, to proclaim, “Here I am Lord. I come to do your will…at all times.” Take our Christian faith and our Catholic identity beyond the ordinary and, with the grace of God, do some extraordinary things in His name and for His glory. Fr. Phil Gibbs, Pastor

Page 3: JANUARY 19, 2020 · 2020. 1. 19. · HVAC: Sixteen furnaces heat our building and window units provide the school’s only air conditioning, making the structure incredibly inefficient

Special Note: The campaign informational gatherings on January 25 & 26 have been rescheduled and will now be taking place in March. Further details will be in the bulletin

and announced at Mass in the future.

Why do we need to build a new school versus remodeling? Resurrection’s facilities provide a setting for serving Christ and passing on to future generations the beliefs, values, and teachings of our Catholic

faith. School classes and parish youth faith formation activities are currently held in a deteriorating building. Critical concerns include:

ELECTRICAL: Our current wiring runs through failing conduit situated in sand beneath the school. With inefficient electrical and a high demand for technology rich programming, Resurrection must address this issue or we may not be able to hold school classes, activities and youth faith formation.

HVAC: Sixteen furnaces heat our building and window units provide the school’s only air conditioning, making the structure incredibly inefficient.

PLUMBING: Typical of a 58-year-old building, the plumbing is in need of updates.

EXTERIOR WALLS: Shifts in the building’s foundation have caused exterior walls to lean. Doing the minimum required facility renovations will not provide Resurrection School with adequate space and facilities to meet our faith community’s needs. Remodeling our existing school is not a viable option. If we update the school building, Resurrection is still left with a 58+ year old structure needing continual maintenance. Building new will save money long-term, be more energy efficient, improve functionality for our current needs and enable us to design a school building that best serves our students and community for generations to come. Considering a donor has committed a $2.5 million matching pledge for building a new structure, now is the time for Resurrection to move forward with this project.

FAIR TRADE PRODUCTS The Social Justice Committee will be selling quality fair trade items following 9:00 a.m. Mass this weekend. Coffee, tea, chocolate bars, baking cocoa, and hot chocolate mix ranging in price from $2.50-$8.50 will be available for purchase.

Ministers of Communion receive special training in both the theology and the logistics of being an Extraordinary Minister of Communion. If you are currently serving as a Eucharistic Minister, but have not attended a training in the last three years, you need to be recommissioned this year to continue in your ministry. Please join us for 9:00 AM Mass on Saturday, February 1st, if you are able, or just arrive for training at 9:30 AM. Training will take approximately one hour. If you are interested in attending the training, please sign up on the parish website or contact Amy Dolan, Director

VOCATION VIEWS EVERY VOCATION IS ONE THOUSAND INVITATIONS

From our birth God calls us to be whole, holy people. How are you growing in wholeness and holiness? For some, the

path to wholeness and holiness is through service as a sister, brother, or priest. Think about it! (1Corinthians 1:1-3)

Please pray for all seminarians of the Archdiocese of Dubuque, those in formation for religious life, and all those in formation for the diaconate.

JUSTICE JOGGER

"NO TO WAR!” War is not always inevitable. It is always a defeat for humanity. International law, honest dialogue, solidarity between States, the noble exercise of diplomacy: these are methods worthy of individuals and nations in resolving their differences. I say this as I think of those who still place their trust in nuclear weapons and of the all-too-numerous conflicts which continue to hold hostage our brothers and sisters in humanity . . . Faced with the constant degeneration of the crisis in the Middle East, that the solution will never be imposed by recourse to terrorism or armed conflict, as if military victories could be the solution. And what are we to say of the threat of a war which could strike the people of Iraq, the land of the Prophets, a people already sorely tried . . . War is never just another means that one can choose to employ for settling differences between nations. As the Charter of the United Nations Organization and international law itself remind us, war cannot be decided upon, even when it is a matter of ensuring the common good, except as the very last option and in accordance with very strict conditions, without ignoring the consequences for the civilian population both during and after the military operations. Excerpted from Pope St. John Paul II, 2003 speech to diplomats re:

Iraq War

RESURRECTION SCHOOL CORNER

National Catholic Schools Week is the annual celebration of Catholic educat ion i n t he Un i ted States. This year, Catholic Schools Week will be celebrated from Jan. 26-Feb 1. The current theme is "Catholic Schools: Learn. Serve. Lead. Succeed."

In Catholic schools, we are all learners, servants and leaders. These shared qualities are what make Catholic schools work. They are what make Catholic schools succeed.

The official CSW logo brings the theme to life. The open book made up of multi-colored pages symbolizes how all areas of Catholic schools blend together, with faith — symbolized by the cross — at the forefront. Catholic schools are vibrant, dynamic and excellent.
