Second Sunday in Ordinary Time Today’s Gospel has us continue with another encounter that John the Baptist has with Jesus after His baptism. This account is only found in John and it is unique because it is also the only Gospel where Jesus Christ is given the title of Lamb of God. This Gospel reveals to us God’s intention in sending us his Son Incarnate. As Lamb of God, Jesus Christ is the sacrifice for sins. This reading reveals to us Jesus’ mission on earth: it is to bring us the forgiveness of sins as the sacrificial lamb to be given on the altar. His baptism is not only the grace of life that leads to good deeds and us becoming children of God, but we are also called to con-form ourselves the same sacrifice of Jesus Christ. This sac-rifice is saying yes to the cross. It is at the cross that this revelation of Son of God and Lamb of God are given to us again. Our life’s sufferings and struggles are present so that we can unite them to His cross. When we embrace our cross through the pain of our struggles, it is that that union with the Father also happens. Amen. Juan Aguacate

Juan Aguacate
