Unhoused Plenum Fans were developed in response to thecontinuing push for greater system value and applicationflexibility in air-handler systems. For systems utilizing pres-surized plenums, these fans provide the airflows and pres-sures of conventional housed fan designs but in compact,more economical configurations. The result is reduced sizeand weight of air-handler cabinetry with maximum appli-cation flexibility. System air is supplied or returned to theair handler from virtually any direction with a minimum ofductwork. Plenum Fans offer system manufacturers theutmost in choice of sizes and configurations.

The rising cost of energy requires that air-handling sys-tems be operated efficiently at less than maximum designairflow. The high efficiency and inherent stability of theAcoustaFoil wheel is particularly well-suited to variableairflow systems. The AcoustaFoil wheel design ensuresnot only maximum operating efficiency at design CFM but also at reduced airflow regardless of the controlmethod applied. This higher efficiency allows quieteroperation throughout the modulation range.

Mechanovent’s sales support staff is familiar with each ofthese control alternatives and can offer further assistancein selecting the best control for a particular application.

INLET-VANEDAMPER CONTROL

Inlet-vane dampers affectthe fan’s output by spin-ning the air in the direction of wheel rota-tion. With this prespin,the wheel cannot developits full output, yielding areduced CFM at reducedhorsepower. Each dampersetting creates new pres-sure and horsepowercurves. With inlet-vanedampers, reduced airflowalways results in reducedhorsepower.

VARIABLE FREQUENCYMOTOR SPEEDCONTROL

Variable frequency motorspeed controllers provideenergy savings by directlycontrolling fan speed.From the fan laws, CFMvaries directly with thechange in fan speed andhorsepower varies by thechange in fan speedcubed. For example, a20% reduction in fanspeed yields a 20%reduction in airflow and a49% reduction in BHP.Controllers must havelockouts to prevent opera-tion beyond the maximumsafe speed of the fan.

HOW TO USE CAPACITY TABLESEXAMPLE: A fan is required for 3200 CFM at 41⁄2”WG at 100°F. and at 1000 ft. elevation. Plenum discharge

is radial with a 2 ft. x 2 ft. duct with no transition.

Select size, RPM, and BHP of fan from capacity tables.

For conditions other than standard, correctstatic pressure for actual altitude and tem-perature using Chart II.

Correct system static pressure for lossesassociated with the discharge from theplenum using Chart I.

Determine actual performance at operatingconditions by correcting SP and BHP.

Check maximum safe speed of fan at tem-perature using Chart III.

Chart I gives a 1.4 velocity pressure correction factor for radial discharge,no transition. Duct velocity is CFM ÷ duct area. 3200 CFM ÷ 4 = 800 FPM.Velocity pressure = (duct velocity ÷ 4005)2. (800 FPM ÷ 4005)2 = .04”WG.Correction is velocity pressure x correction factor, .04” x 1.4 = .06”WG.Static pressure required = 4.5”WG + .06”WG = 4.56”WG.

Chart II gives a 1.10 factor for 100°F and 1000 ft. Corrected SP is 4.56”WGx 1.10 = 5.0”WG at 70°F. Select fan from capacity tables for 3200 CFM at5.0”WG.

A Size 133 is selected for 3200 CFM at 5.0”WG at 3921 RPM and 4.87BHP.

Actual performance: 3200 CFM at 4.56”WG [5.0 ÷ 1.10] at 3921 RPMat 4.43 BHP [4.87 ÷ 1.10] at 100°F. and 1000 ft.

From the capacity table and Chart Ill, the maximum safe speed of a Size133 fan is 4287 RPM [4330 RPM x .99]. A Class II fan is satisfactory foroperation at 100°F.

The sound ratings shown are fan sound power levels (reference 10-12 watts) by octave bands at various speeds at thepeak efficiency point of operation. They are the results of laboratory tests based on reverberant room techniques asdescribed in AMCA Bulletin 300 and processed by the procedures shown in AMCA Bulletin 301. The ratings includeboth inlet and outlet sound and the effect of end reflection. For a known installation the ratings can be used to estimateeither sound pressure levels by octave band at a particular location, or dBA . . . consult your Mechanovent representative.

Select the Outlet Sound Power Level from Chart II at thespeed nearest the fan’s operating speed.

Determine the VP/SP ratio by dividing the velocity pres-sure at the fan outlet by the static pressure (See Chart Ifor velocity pressure).

Select the BP/SP correction factors from Chart III andadd them algebraically to the fan’s Outlet Sound PowerLevel obtained in Step 1. The result is the TotalCorrected Outlet Sound Power Level for the fan at theselected condition.

Mechanovent provides sound power level ratings in each of theeight octave bands, as tested and rated in accordance with AirMovement and Control Association International (AMCA)Publication 300. These ratings are statements of the total soundenergy levels emanating from the inlet and outlet of the fanitself.

These sound power ratings are considered the only truly accu-rate basis for comparison, or for further estimating the resultantnoise levels within a given system or installation.

In some cases, Mechanovent offers silencers for the fan inletand/or outlet that can be used to attenuate sound power ema-nating through the fan inlet or outlet. Specific ratings are avail-able to determine the revised sound level resulting from the useof such silencers.

Though methods are available for estimating values of soundpressure levels by octave band or the single number dBA atpoints some distance from the fan, these result merely in esti-mates based on ideal situations that do not take into effect

background noise, other sound producing equipment in aninstallation, the effective building configuration and constructionand/or the effects of ductwork configuration and physical con-struction.

Specifications demanding guaranteed pressure levels in anyform, either adjacent to the fan or at other points in the installa-tion or system, can only be met through qualified analysis of thetotal system and physical environs by professional AcousticalConsultants or trained Acoustical Engineers - a professionalservice that is clearly beyond the responsibility of the fan man-ufacturer.

Consequently, Mechanovent offers these sound power level rat-ings, as tested and rated in accordance with AMCA Publication300, as the only qualified tool for meaningful evaluation by thepurchaser or his agent. This constitutes an exception to anyspecification for sound data or guarantees in any form otherthan sound power level ratings.

The ratings shown are based on tests and procedures performedin accordance with AMCA Publications 211 and 311 and comply with requirements of the AMCA Certified Ratings Program.

AIR PERFORMANCE

The following tables provide air performance data for Plenum Fans with Backward Curved and Backward Curved-q wheels. For agiven fan size, and required CFM and static pressure, these capacity tables can be used to obtain fan RPM and BHP. If capacitiesare at conditions other than 70°F., sea level, or standard density (.075 lb./cu.ft.), correction factors must be applied to static pres-sure and BHP. Determine Outlet Sound Power Levels from a Size 493BC Plenum Fan operating at 30,000 CFM at 2” SP, 601RPM, 15.5 BHP, 1639 FPM OV.

Select the Outlet Sound Power Level from Chart II at the speednearest the fan’s operating speed.

Determine the VP/SP ratio by dividing the velocity pressure at thefan outlet by the static pressure (See Chart I for velocity pressure).

Select the BP/SP correction factors from Chart III and add themalgebraically to the fan’s Outlet Sound Power Level obtained inStep 1. The result is the Total Corrected Outlet Sound PowerLevel for the fan at the selected condition.

From Chart II, list the Outlet Sound Power for the eight octavebands for a Size 493 BC Plenum Fan at 601 RPM. See Line 1 below.

Determine the VP/SP ratio of the fan, 1639 FPM OV is equivalentto .167” VP (See Chart I): VP/SP = .167/2 = .084.

From Chart III, list the appropriate VP/SP correction factors and add them to the ratings in Line 1. See Lines 2 and 3 below.

MECHANOVENT CORPORATION POLICY REGARDING “SOUND” SPECIFICATIONS

NOTE: This policy statement is presented both as a guide to purchasers of fan equipment and as a resolution of Mechanovent’sresponsibility in cases where the purchaser has requested that Mechanovent equipment meet certain noise level specifications.

Mechanovent provides sound power level ratings in each of theeight octave bands, as tested and rated in accordance with AirMovement and Control Association International (AMCA)Bulletin 300. These ratings are statements of the total soundenergy levels emanating from the inlet and outlet of the fanitself.

These sound power ratings are considered the only truly accu-rate basis for comparison, or for further estimating the resultantnoise levels within a given system or installation.

In some cases, Mechanovent offers silencers for the fan inletand/or outlet that can be used to attenuate sound power ema-nating through the fan inlet or outlet. Specific ratings are avail-able to determine the revised sound level resulting from the useof such silencers.

Though methods are available for estimating values of soundpressure levels by octave band or the single number dBA atpoints some distance from the fan, these result merely in esti-mates based on ideal situations that do not take into effect

background noise, other sound producing equipment in aninstallation, the effective building configuration and constructionand/or the effects of ductwork configuration and physical con-struction.

Specifications demanding guaranteed pressure levels in anyform, either adjacent to the fan or at other points in the installa-tion or system, can only be met through qualified analysis of thetotal system and physical environs by professional AcousticalConsultants or trained Acoustical Engineers - a professionalservice that is clearly beyond the responsibility of the fan man-ufacturer.

Consequently, Mechanovent offers these sound power level rat-ings, as tested and rated in accordance with AMCA Bulletin 300,as the only qualified tool for meaningful evaluation by the pur-chaser or his agent. This constitutes an exception to any spec-ification for sound data or guarantees in any form other thansound power level ratings.
