Field devices, the final elements of process automation are relied upon to provide a criticalinterface between processes and digital control systems, which make the modern enterpriseswork. The integration of field devices is shifting to bus based technologies because of large datademands. Modern control systems comprise of variety of diverse sub-systems transparentlyintegrated. The system integrator has lot of choice, and which “Bus” to use is an interestingchallenge. What complicates matters is choice of media, wires or wireless, process, safety andregulatory requirements and therefore selecting the wrong bus, can adversely affect the bottomline of a company.

The presentation by Romel Bhullar and Mark Murphy will discuss some strategies, keypoints to considers, emerging trends and technologies, and what is coming around the corner.

Romel Bhullar, P.E., is Technical fellow and technical director withFluor Corporation in Aliso Viejo, California. He has over 30 years of indepth experience in process automation, system and enterprise integrationof refineries, gas processing, LNG, pipe line and power industries. He hasdesigned, engineered, and help startup many mega projects, throughout theworld. He has authored several technical articles in process control,automation and system integration. He holds a post graduate degree inchemical engineering, an MBA, a certificate in “Advanced ComputerEngineering” and is a licensed professional engineer in the State ofCalifornia.

Mark H. Murphy, P.E., is a Control Systems Engineer with over 25years of experience in process automation, instrumentation and controls forrefinery, petrochemical and power plants. He currently works for FluorCorporation as a principal engineer where he is responsible forvery largescale automation projects. He has published several articles and madepresentations at major conferences. He is registered profession engineer inCalifornia and other states.

Kim, you will be the first woman President ofISA beginning in January 2008. Can you tell us alittle about how you got where you are today? I graduated in 1986 with a B.S. in ChemicalEngineering and landed in the automationindustry by accident. In 1986 jobs were scarce inthe Petro-Chem industry, so I accepted aposition with Teledyne Analytical as an InsideSales Engineer and the rest is history. Over theyears I’ve worked with a variety of companies,

both as a user (Ralph M. Parsons E&C) as well as sales and marketingfor several different vendors including my current employer EmersonProcess Management, Rosemount Analytical Division. I have stayed inthe automation world because I really enjoy it and I think the future isvery bright considering how rapidly technology is evolving.

Why did you join ISA? To you, what are the benefits of joining ISAand how has it helped your professional career?

In 1986, shortly after graduation, I accepted a position withTeledyne and I then joined ISA. At the time, local leaders were pullingtogether a Host Committee for ISA EXPO 1987 in Anaheim. Teledynewanted someone on the Committee and I was willingly volunteered.

The major benefit of my ISA membership has been the network ofprofessionals that I have access to, as well as the technical informationthat is readily available. I can honestly say that every job I have taken onsince graduation has had something to do with my ISA involvement,either by networking or my recognition as a leader that was appreciatedby the decision-makers.

In my current role of Sales Development and Support – I need thesource of customer contact – I don’t often get in the field and having away to be face-to-face with customers outside of official sales calls opensup all kinds of great communication.

On December 8th, Joe Bingham was presented with the Jake C.Groenewegen Distinguished Section Service Award for his years ofoutstanding service, leadership, and significant contributions to the LosAngeles Section and to the instruments and controls community asrecognized by his peers.

Joe Bingham is a Certified Automation Professional and presidentof AES Automation, a system integrator for the water/wastewater, gas,air quality, and manufacturing industries in Anaheim, California,responsible for the installation, management, and replacement ofSCADA/HMI, CEMS, and DAS/RTU systems.

Joe is a senior member of ISA, serves on the Executive Board, is theoutgoing Vice President for District 11, and has been instrumental in thedevelopment of the ISA Certified Automation Professional (CAP)program. He is also a member of the following Standards Committees:SP101, Human-Machine Interface (Chair); SP18, Instrument Signals andAlarms; and SP84, Programmable Electronic Systems for Use in SafetyApplications.

As co-chair of ISA101 Committee Joe is helping to establishstandards, recommended practices, and/or technical reports pertaining tohuman-machine interfaces in manufacturing applications. You’ve probably heard the saying: “It takesa village to raise a child.” In the middle of aphone call from a concerned employer, I wasreminded of this saying. With the criticalshortage of trained technicalprofessionals needed to fill thepresent and future openings inthe Electronics,Instrumentation, andAutomation fields, many of usare working together to help

meet these needs. Despite our best efforts so far, aglobal vision needs to be developed and implemented toadequately face this challenge. This effort will need to gobeyond simply our college’s efforts and theoverwhelming assistance we’ve received from ISAmembers. It will take industry leaders to become pro-active in the process of developing the needed technicalworkforce.

In the September 16, 2007 Bakersfield Californiannewspaper classified ads, 13 companies were seeking atotal of over two dozen installers, technicians, andmaintenance mechanics. Several of these companies runweekly ads in hopes of attracting suitable candidates.Most of these companies have contacted our BakersfieldCollege program at one point or another. With ourexisting mix of students, we simply cannot meet thisimmediate need. Although we have record enrollment, amajority of our continuing students (those taking morethan a few classes) are already employed in a technicalposition or are looking to advance to one with theirpresent employer. This leaves only a small number ofstudents each semester who are able to enter theworkforce without such an obligation. Besides theacademic needs of our program, our main challenge isattracting new students - those not currently employedin a technical position, into our program.

This is the first in a series of six articles in which Iwill present a global approach in building this technicalworkforce. Specifically, we’ll examine studentrecruitment efforts, creating an industry advocacy group,promoting our educational opportunities, developingadditional courses and training opportunities, andmeeting community needs. I expect that all who read thisarticle has something to offer within this globalapproach, such as technical expertise, industryconnections, or the willingness to serve on an IndustryAdvocacy Group.

Minimum Wage & Salary IncreasesEffective January 1, 2008, the California minimum wage will

On Wednesday, February 13, 2008, the Orange County Sectionwill host a panel discussion on safety instrumented systems (SIS).A local panel of experts led by Paul Bodeau of WhynotEngineering, one of the countries leading experts on safety systems,will demystify safety instrumented systems. The panel will becomprised of Luis Duran of Triconex, Charlie Black of RKControls (Siemens) and Larry Lammers of Caltrol (Emerson)and will discuss SIS standards and work practices.

The basics of SIS will be discussed by the panel and then they will delve intoIEC 61508 and ISA 84.01 / IEC 61511 standards, and then cover safety integritylevels (SIL) levels, PFD, SFF, LOPA and proof test intervals. IEC 61508 is entitled“Functional safety of electrical/electronic/ programmable electronic safety-relatedsystems (E/E/PES)” is intended to be a basic functional safety standard applicable toall kinds of industry. ISA 84.01/IEC 61511 is a standards document entitled“Functional safety - Safety instrumented systems for the process industry sector”.

The process industry sector includes many types of manufacturing processes,such as refineries, petrochemical, chemical, pharmaceutical, pulp and paper, andpower.

Biographical sketchJoe first got into engineering because his father

worked for Halliburton for years. “So when I was inschool,” Joe says, “he got me a part-time job working ona job site with the instrumentation department, handlingboiler code drawing and the instrument index. In a largerefinery installation or construction site, all theinstruments and instrument drawings are in an index, thebible in an instrumentation department. If you need toinstall an instrument or run power to it or understand thecontrol function, you refer to the index where all thosedrawings are cross-referenced. I took to the job becausethere was a lot of complexity to it. I was into computersand other software. It allowed me to be creative, neverdoing the same thing twice.”

Now Joe has been able to draw on that creativity,working with the latest technology, computer systems,and graphics. AES now does graphical design for clientsin municipalities, manufacturing, and the oil industry.

Among his other roles within ISA, Joe has served asChairman of Automation West 2006; Chairman of theEngineering, Science and Technology Policy for ISA2006; and has served as President, Education Chair,Exhibits Chair and Student Liaison to Cal Poly Pomonaon the Los Angeles Section Board of Directors.

Summing it up, Joe indicates, “The love oftechnology, and using it creatively, has really openeddoors in my career.”

Why did you join ISA Divisions?

I joined both the Analysis Division andManagement Division to receive newslettersand to take advantage of the networkingopportunities. Since I have always worked inthe Analytical field—I felt it my duty to be amember of the Analysis Division, and theManagement Division was a great supplementto my primary focus.

I have many professional and personalmentors but Don Zee is probably one of thebiggest influences in my professional life. DonZee is a past president of ISA and President ofDon Zee Associates consulting firm in LagunaBeach, CA. There are many attributes that Iadmire in a mentor but integrity is what mattersmost to me.

I am listed on the ISA mentoring site EachOne Teach One and I have mentored a few otherwomen in my professional career.

Who has been your biggest inspiration?

I would say my mother. She always said Icould do anything I wanted, be anything Iwanted – there were no barriers. My motheralso started her own business after raising twokids and is quite successful. Quite anaccomplishment!

Within the professional automation worldI admire qualities in men like John Berra, JimPinto, and Pete Pitsker. These men are trueleaders in automation technology and industryapplication, and are also great businessmen.

What would you say to young career-minded professional about the automationindustry today?

The future holds no limitations! I thinkthis is a very exciting time for automation. Asthe plant floor merges with the business/accounting systems – it puts the automationpeople right in the corner office wheresignificant decisions are made. Automationprofessionals will be part of the core staff ofany operation, making improvements inefficiency, profitability, and safety.

Would you offer any suggestions howthey can be better prepared for their career inAutomation?

As President-Elect of ISA, what goalswould you like to accomplish during yourterm?
