//FROM THE PUBLISHER

DEcEMBER 2008

s we enter yet another new year, it

surely doesn’t look like business

as usual. It seems there is a lot

of trouble in River City and

everywhere else in the world for

that matter. Of course it’s worth

noting that all this negativity didn’t just happen. It’s been

percolating for awhile. Maybe we just haven’t been paying

much attention to it; kind of out of sight, out of mind.

For most of us, what’s depressing about all this is that

we feel relatively powerless to do much to change the situation. And yet, 2009 is all about change, isn’t it?

With a new administration in Washington elected on a platform of change, many people feel a new sense of

hope that things can be different and better.

While the issues are tough and the solutions may be painful, the first change we must make is our

attitude. We really do need to focus on the positive things in our lives and make a real effort to impact those

areas that we indeed control. Amidst all the turmoil around us, one of the most important assets each of us

possesses, is our health and well being. In fact, it’s largely under our control.

So, while there’s anxiety about the economy and consumer confidence is slipping, you still have control

over your health. Take the time this year to focus on this most basic part of your life, your mind and body.

2009 is your opportunity to re-prioritize and get back to basics, and health and fitness really represent the

foundation of a successful life.

Here are a few ideas to get you started:

“If you call a thing bad you do little, if you call a thing good you do much.” ~ Johann Wolfgang von Goethe ~

“You must start with a positive attitude or you will surely end without one.” ~ Carrie Latet ~

“Excellence is not a skill. It is an attitude.” ~ Ralph Marston ~

“We cannot direct the wind but we can adjust the sails.” ~ Author Unknown ~

“If you can’t imagine it, it’s unlikely you will experience it” ~ Lou Earle ~

So imagine it and adjust your sails for a healthy and fit 2009!

Keep Austin Fit,

The feature you ran on Craig Staley was one of the best I’ve

read yet. What a fascinating profile! It was so well-written,

the photography was phenomenal and there was amazing

depth to his story. It’s always wonderful to learn more about

local entrepeneurs, but to do so in such an insightful and enjoyable way was a

true pleasure. Keep up the great work!” anGELa MarraST, auSTIn

Whether it’s a large cup of coffee at breakfast, a soda at lunch or a mid-

afternoon energy drink; regular endorphins don’t always suffice the weekday routine. Austin may be one of the healthiest cities in the nation, but it also has its fair share of caffeinated drinks, including the ever-popular Red Bull. Here are some reasons you should think twice the next time you feel you need wings.

serious FindingsAfter Red Bull’s caffeine amount was recently

considered a contributing factor to three deaths,

researchers at the Royal Adelaide Hospital and

Adelaide University conducted a study, suggesting that

sugar-free Red Bull can cause blood to become “sticky”

and heighten the risk of clots.

Thirty university students were each asked to

drink one 250 milliliter can. Afterwards, their

blood pressure and blood vessels were tested; each

participant shockingly had a profile similar to

someone with heart disease.

Dr. Scott Willoughby, lead of the study, was

alarmed at the results, and suggested older adults with

heart disease symptoms should refrain from drinking

energy drinks altogether.

“After one can [of Red Bull] it seemed to turn the

young individual into one with more the type of profile

you would see with someone with cardiovascular

disease,” he says. “People who already have existing

cardiovascular disease may want to talk to their

physician before they drink Red Bull in the future.”

A similar survey at the Henry Ford Hospital

in Detroit found active adults drinking two cans

a day also had a heart rate increase of 11 percent

and a seven percent rise in blood pressure after one

week. This study is even more shocking because

even though healthy adults were tested in both

studies, there are still a large number of people with

existing heart conditions. Dr. Frank Zidar, director of

cardiac catheterization labs at the Heart Hospital of

Austin, believes that everyone, with or without heart

problems, should be conscious of how these issues can

originate. Especially considering how ubiquitous Red

Bull has become.

“Events like heart attack or stroke result from

clogged arteries or abnormal flow,” he says.

“Characteristics of Red Bull alter the blood flow, and

that worries me.”

Red Bull is known for the ingredient taurine, a

sulfur-containing nonessential amino acid, used in

treating epilepsy, Alzheimer’s and heart arrhythmias.

It has also been implicated as a regulator of calcium

in the brain, nervous system, visual pathways

and activates gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA)

receptors in the thalamus. Taurine causes a sedative

effect — however, it’s mixed into a caffeinated energy

drink.

“Taurine may actually play a role in the crash people

often report after drinking these highly caffeinated

beverages,” Dr. Zidar says. “It’s interesting that they

couple a sedative with a stimulant.”

The combination dehydrates and causes a constant

need to go to the bathroom, called a diuretic effect.

Energy drinks do not replenish and rehydrate like a

sports drink, but have more of a downstream effect

on the body.

“You’re taking a cocktail of things that affect

neurotransmitters,” Dr. Zidar says.

The bottom line is [this has] a clear, physiological

affect on the cardiovascular system.”

Energy drinks, vitamin supplements and other

“functional foods” aren’t regulated by the U.S. Food and

Drug Administration. This means that even though

it says “dietary supplement” on the label, it doesn’t

necessarily mean that’s what the customer is getting.

Whether or not Red Bull is healthy, energizing or

tranquilizing, it still remains the most popular energy

drink on the market. Zidar thinks the study sanctions

further investigation, particularly in a study applied to

everyone — not just college students.

Red Bull & VodkaTaurine — one of the major ingredients in Red Bull — along with alcohol, produce a sedative effect. However, they’re both mixed into a caffeinated energy drink. A precarious combination.

to curb obesity in the state of texas, the

nation and the world, we all have to take it one step

at a time. At least that’s the approach Governor Rick

Perry and Sir Richard Branson are partnering up

to push.

With the unveiling of their innovative “Capitol

Steps” program last month, Governor Perry

challenged governors from all other 49 states to

participate in a two-week fi tness contest spanning

from Jan 1st through Jan 14th. The challenge is

an extension of the Virgin HealthMiles program,

a work wellness initiative in which Branson’s

company provides high-tech pedometers to

employees to encourage regular physical activity.

In exchange, participants get cash, and lots of it,

depending on their level of exercise.

“We pay people to be active,” said Sean Forbes,

president of Virgin HealthMiles. “Up to 500 dollars

a year in cash. And it's fun.”

As part of the “Capitol Steps” challenge,

governors can recruit up to 20 cabinet-level staff

to participate, each given a Virgin HealthMiles

GoZone pedometer. Teams will then upload their

fi tness results and track their activity over the two-

week period. At the conclusion of the challenge,

the winning state will be crowned the Most Active

Governor’s Team and presented a $50,000 donation

to their state’s childhood obesity program. It will all

culminate at a special event hosted by Sir Richard

Branson and Virgin HealthMiles in Washington,

D.C. on Feb 21st.

“This is Texas, so we can make a competition

out of anything, plus as governors we must set an

example for our states,” said Governor Perry. “In

all seriousness, I want to give special thanks to Sir

Richard Branson for his dedication, vision and

this extraordinary program. Virgin HealthMiles

is unlike any other program I’ve seen, and it’s

producing impressive results to keep people active

and help them lose weight.”

According to Forbes, about 50,000 Texans are

currently enrolled in the Virgin HealthMiles program.

And last year alone, they lost an average of fi ve pounds

each, for a total weight-loss of 250,000 pounds.

“Fitness is a real challenge for us here in Texas

and something we take very seriously,” Perry said.

“We're not going to sit still.” When asked why fi tness

was such an important priority for him, particularly

in light of the current economic crisis, his answer

was simple.

“I look at health and fi tness the same way I look

at any other issue, whether it be the economy, taxes

or tort reform. In the context of cost, obesity [and

other chronic diseases] are hugely expensive, if not

governor perry & virgin team Up to battle obesity across all 50 states

the most expensive issue(s) we face in Texas.”

According to Perry, obesity costs Texas

businesses about $4 billion every year, a fi gure that

could balloon to 15.8 billion annually by 2025, if

left unchecked. Almost two-thirds of all Texans

(64.1 percent) are currently obese or overweight

and the state spends more than $122 billion a year

in obesity-related expenses and lost productivity

each year.

“Our goal is to make fi tness a real priority – it

doesn’t require a bailout, it just means we have to get

moving,” Perry said. “What we hope to prove is that

fi tness isn’t just for triathletes, marathon runners

or Olympic-level competitors. Fitness is simply

about doing more today than you did the day before,

peeling yourself off the couch, and getting moving.”

What motivates you?Our business has the opportunity to touch and even change people’s lives every time they walk through our door.

Who supports you most?My biggest supporters in helping me reach my goals continue to be my wonderful family and amazing staff.

18 | AUSTIN FIT MAGAZINE | January 2009

What do you see as the futureof your business?global obesity is rising at an alarming rate, and the only way to fight obesity is through diet and ex-ercise. The world will begin to see exercise as medicine. At the present time, only 17% of the U.S. popu-lation is health club members. This means our industry has an amazing potential to grow and help fight this epidemic.

what do you look for when working out? Honestly, I’m always looking for something fun and effective that I can do in a relatively short amount of time!

What does your exercise routine

look like?I still teach three group

classes a week. I lift weights twice a week, work with a Pilates trainer once a week, and walk four miles three to

four days a week.

in 1982 I was state

director for an aerobic

dance franchise (similar

to Jazzercise) in Hawaii

called “Dancergetics.”

We moved to Austin

because my husband

got a fantastic job

opportunity here. I was

eight months pregnant

with my fi rst child and

looking for a place to

work out until I delivered.

When my daughter was

four months old, I went

to a local racquetball

club (Supreme Court)

and offered to teach

free aerobics if they

would let me build a

program. We started in

a racquetball court with

45s and a record player;

two years later I was the

aerobics director for

all fi ve clubs. In 1984,

Penny Reeves-Goff and

I started “The WorkOut

of Austin,” which

quickly transformed

to BodyBusiness. We

opened three aerobic

studios in 1986 (right

before the stock market

crash) and then had to

close two studios within

a year. We eventually

moved one into a vacated

health club in 1992. In

2003, the year I turned 50,

I opened our Davenport

Village Club.

How did you start your business?

First of all, BodyBusiness Health club & Spas are the only female-owned and independently-operated full-service health clubs in austin. Our anderson Lane location is a unique “Keep austin Weird” club. Our Davenport Village location is a boutique-style club. Both clubs have private personal training and Pilates studios, mind/body studios and day spa for members and guests. The BodyBusiness culture is like “cheers,” where everybody knows your name. “Providing our members with a positively memorable experience on each and every visit,” which is our staff credo.

We opened our doors on April 5, 1999 at our downtown location.

At the time we wanted a club that would cater to the Austin lifestyle.

We used but never really enjoyed going to gyms: the high pressure

sales, the uncleanliness and the meathead mentality. We wrote down

all the things we didn’t like about gyms and all the cool stuff we’d love

to see instead. I was working a job in a dark genetics lab, so I thought,

“What is there to lose? Let’s give this a shot.” We presented our ideas to

a couple developers before the downtown boom and got a shot at it.

How did you start Pure Austin?

20 | AUSTIN FIT MAGAZINE | January 2009

What inspires you mostin your work? It's been almost 10 years now and the one thing that

makes me look forward to going to work is the people.

The members and staff come up with very innovative

ideas, and they know we’re willing to try them out. Some

work, some don’t; but the fun part is trying them out.

We always tell our staff that it's our responsibility to set

the trend but not to follow it. It must be a niche or very

special people, but they defi nitely cannot be categorized or

compartmentalized into the general “gym-type” people. It

makes the job evolve all the time and challenging to change,

but when we stop, we will fail and become a “gym.”

What do you do to stay in shape? I’m all over the place. Mountain and road cycling are my favorites. I do resistance training but mostly at home and about once a week at the gym. I also take the kids out and motocross on the weekends. Having a goal to shoot for seems to be the catalyst. Even if it’s only a few big ones per year. Oh, and of course I do sit ups before bed. Haaaa.

What sets your gym apart? It’s thrown around a lot these days but we really are a tight family. Our ethical realm is to treat others the way they want to be treated and not the way we want to be treated. We need to constantly keep two-way communication for that to work. When we designed our clubs, we never looked at other gyms but cool restaurants, bars and other places that felt captivating. We are very different in that we focus on retention more than signing up new members. It’s much more fun, because life is too short not to make it fun.

Wild Basin Fitness opened in 1996 and I became the sole owner a few years later. The business was founded on hard work and dedication, and built by referrals and word-of-mouth.

How did you start your business?

Kirk LEAVELLWILD BASIN STEINER RANCH/WESTLAKE

Whatinspires you in your work? Many clients come to me

with a list of “I can’t(s),” and

that motivates me. I fi nd a

lot of job satisfaction in other

people’s fi tness accomplish-

ments. Helping someone

achieve their goals by enabling

them to do something they

thought they couldn’t is very

rewarding and inspiring.

What is your background in the fi tness industry?I started personal training in 1992 in College Station and San Antonio, and then made the move to Austin in 1994. The original Wild Basin Fitness opened in Westlake in 1996 and the Steiner location opened its doors in 2006.

What kind of growth have you seen in your gym since the start?

What do you look for when working out?Balance is important to overall health and fi tness. I constantly evaluate my client’s strengths and weaknesses in order to develop the weak spots and maintain that balance.

What do you do to stay in shape?I am a fi rm believer in variety. I play golf, tennis, lift weights, ski, wakeboard, trail run, mountain bike and attend yoga to keep things fun and interesting.

I opened Westlake with my original 30 clients and grew to nine additional trainers and 150 members. The Steiner Ranch location has grown to nine trainers, 15 classroom instructors and 500 members in the last two years.

I started Castle Hill Fitness on October 16, 2002 by taking over a downtown location previously occupied by another gym that went out of business. After a long and rewarding entrepreneurial career in energy conservation, I was on the lookout for an opportunity to apply my skills to a more social context than the corporate venues of my prior business; nevertheless it was not clear to me how this would materialize. I stumbled across this gym by being a customer fi rst, feeling the positive energy shared by a great group of fi tness professionals and their loyal customer base. Eventually I stepped in as the new leader when the existing business closed down.

How did you start your gym?

What do you see for the future of your business?I am a strong proponent of the “small is beautiful” paradigm, having spent my entire career in small business. I look forward to keeping Castle Hill its present size (in terms of facilities), while expanding its outreach and services. We are located in a densely populated area, and have many more potential customers entering the downtown area with the recent high-rise development; so a lot of growth is available in our immediate service area. I also want to expand our outdoor programs, because I think everyone can benefit from spending more exercise time outside.

What kind of growth have you seen? Our business has nearly doubled in the last six years, starting with a good base in our fi rst year, inherited from the former gym at this same location. I feel that we are keeping slightly ahead of Austin’s growth in fi tness, especially when you account for all the openings of new gyms, yoga and Pilates studios.

Why did you choose your specifi c location?Because of the demograph-ics and population density,

downtown seemed the logical place to operate from. It is the heart of the city, and I much enjoy the energy that comes

with that.

What do you think makes your gym unique?A couple of things in my opinion do stand out. First, the

diversity of our clients stands out, because we have everything

from children and college students, to young, more mature

professionals and a number of seniors. Second, we offer a broad

choice of activities — each conducted within “specialized”

environments that are more studio-like than gym-like. We are

the opposite of a “big box” gym, despite our respectable 17,000+

square foot fl oor plan. Also our full service Food 4 Fitness Café

and Biciclette Italiane bike shop are unique signatures that

differentiate us from others. Lastly, we are big proponents of

welcoming non-members, which is not only community friendly,

but good during an economic downturn.

What has surprised you the mostwhile at castle Hill? After six years of operation, I am very proud of the community we have created at Castle Hill. From the glass windows of my open cubicle (which is located directly behind our front desk), I have the privilege to witnessing fi rsthand the high quality of interactions among people. I am very satisfi ed with what I see, though I remain challenged!

The location was chosen when I was seven years old. We’ve

kept it here because it’s conve-nient, the adjacent streets are

great for walking and running and Hyde Park is full of fun,

creative people.

What are you most proud of amongst your membership? There is a strong sense of ownership among the members. It’s a very social group, and their desire to be involved in operating decisions is higher than I expected. It’s a great community.

Coconut CuriosityWith an exotic yet accessible flavor and plenty of uses, coconuts provide a shortcut to a culinary and nutritional vacation.

oilThe essence of the coconut, referred to as oil or coconut butter, is made up of a whopping 90 percent saturated fat. This doesn’t prevent it from being a popular cooking aid, however, and it has even been shown to have medicinal properties. Many people use it for antiviral, antifungal and antibacterial pur-poses and it is often added as an ingredient in cosmetics and skin products.

nutritionThis tropical delight is sometimes looked down upon for being high in fat (90% of the fat found in coconut is saturated), but correspondingly robust levels of zinc, iron and phosphorous and a lower sugar content than most other fruits casts the coconut in a pretty positive light. Coconut meat also has about three grams of protein and nine grams of fiber per serving, so this indulgence’s health benefits are legit.

Coconut Curiosity

Zico

Water vs. MilkYes they’re different; coconut water is a clear liquid found naturally inside of young coconuts. It is fat free and high in potassium and other minerals, thus it is sometimes marketed as a sports drink as well as a refreshing tropical bev-erage. Coconut milk is sweeter and thicker in consistency and is prepared by grating coconut meat and possibly mixing it with warm water.

coconut milk is often used in cooking...tom kha, anyone?

say hello to Zico, coconut water with a conscience. By aiming to appeal to athletes and other health-conscious folks who also happen to care about the world at large, the founders of Zico have created a product that stands apart from everything else on the drink shelf. Lots of potassium and other nutrients, fewer calories than regular sports drinks and paper-based, sustainable packaging

has given Zico (made from 100 percent coconut water that’s been infused with natural fl avoring, by the way) an irresistible allure to elite athletes and weekend warriors alike. Find it here in town at Yogagroove (7958 great Northern Blvd.) or through an online retailer like amazon, but give Zico a try if you’re down for something different. for more information, visit zico.com.

Harboring one of the more famous landmarks in austin

— the gigantic bicep dangling over guadalupe along the east end of Hyde Park — this gym is the epitome of no frills. However, it’s expansive, clean and has a warm, community vibe. The look is reminiscent of those afterschool weight-lifting days, and that’s a lot of Hyde Park gym’s charm. Members are friendly and there for one reason — to work out. Previously owned by bodybuilder Dave goodin, this facility has cleaned up its act in the last few years thanks to new owner Brook Jones.

Soco athletic club is the exclusive gym in the trendy Soco area and it’s getting better every year. Owners Tracy and Mike Frazier have three decades of training experience under their belt, a hard thing to come by these days. Some of the focuses here are boxing conditioning, sport-specific training and Olympic-style weightlifting, combined with traditional training techniques. For 2009, look for a bigger footprint and even more services.

Nestled within the luxurious Hilton hotel right off Sixth Street, the Hilton Tower Health Club and Spa is the perfect contrast to the hustle and bustle of the downtown strip. Boasting two cardio rooms, free-weights, state-of-the-art exercise equipment, personal training and a full spa featuring everything from facials to massage; this gym has great views on all sides and a boutique feel that will make your exercise time more like a weekend getaway than a workout. No initiation or cancellation fees round out an attractive health and fi tness package.

Both austin locations are gigantic, sprawling facilities that have everything a health club could offer — boasting athletic leagues, plasma big-screen TVs and more than 400 exercise machines designed to work every muscle in the body. Each complex also features a café, nutrition store, spa and salon, basketball/volleyball/sport courts, an amusement park-like indoor pool with water slide as well as an outdoor pool. all for as little as $49 a month.

curves has more than 20 austin locations to choose from and a whopping 10,000 gyms worldwide, claiming to be the fastest growing franchise in history. a gym for women only, curves focuses on a thorough 30-minute workout plan that aims to not only keep women in shape, but bring them together in a friendly, encouraging atmosphere. Without the pressure or pretentiousness that tend to accompany more hard-core gyms, curves is a refreshing change of pace — a place woman can go and have a good time while also getting in a good workout.

gold’s offers a complete fitness experience in each of its 10 austin locations, with stand-out features like “women’s only” workout areas, certified chiropractors, cardio cinema rooms, Olympic-size swimming pools and free childcare. a popular choice for many austinites, gold’s typifies what most people consider a workout club to be.

EDITOR’S cHOIcE

28Our “Editor’s Pick” two years ago, 24 Hour Fitness is the ultimate gym for students or the budget-conscious looking for affordable prices and an above-average set of amenities. The third largest chain of gyms in Austin, it has made its mark as an often crowded, fast-paced gym with a slightly younger demographic. Child care, workout apparel and nutrition are available at all locations, plus look for lap pools, basketball courts and stretching areas. Finally, 24-hour availability makes these gyms ideal for exercisers with busy schedules.

Perhaps the best perk of joining the Y is that you’ll receive free group exercise classes, year-round swimming and childcare — all for some of the most flexible and affordable membership fees around. Members also have access to child and teen programming which emphasize a life-long commitment to health and fitness. austin is home to eight YMca locations, so wherever you are, you won’t be too far from a great community and fitness facility.

841 total respondentsTo get a peek at how much our readers really workout, we decided to conduct an impromptu survey about exercise preferences while producing this year’s gym guide. The survey period was quick (just over three weeks) and the analysis pretty unscientific, yet the responses were surprisingly interesting.

What our readers say

Interested in less pain and more gain? 1-2-3 Fitness is one of the only gyms in town to offer the novel 30/30 circuit — a 30-minute workout that alternates between cardiovascular exercise, strength training and recovery time at 30-second intervals to maximize the potential and efficiency of your exercise time. Their revolutionary Simbio System, designed to eliminate unnecessary resistance and help increase strength, cuts down on the soreness and keeps you from getting injured. These innovative features, as well month-to-month memberships, are all part of 123 Fit’s recipe for attracting novice workout enthusiasts.
