2011: BlendingPrint Into Digital

There’s a lot to say about 2010. As we all know, it wasn’t an easy year. Fortunately, hope persists and as we enter 2011, we all look for easier times. Things will continue to change, as they always do.

While change is inevitable, it’s by no means predictable and often arrives without warning. It’s as often

positive as it is negative, sometimes trivial and sometimes momentous, and it affects each of us uniquely.

One change we’ve seen lately is the increasingly unhealthy America that surrounds us. It has been a silent kind of deterioration, creeping up on us. This stealthy assault has been fueled by a complex set of infl uences, from the jobs we have to the way we live our lives. So here we are, in 2011, faced with a real crisis. We must undo decades of unhealthy living — and do it quickly.

It may seem daunting, but one or two generations of serious effort could signifi cantly change the outcome. To make this happen, we need to start now. “Healthy” needs to become the norm, not the impressive exception. We cannot afford to lose another generation to the pain and suffering caused by unhealthy decisions.

It is this sense of urgency that drives us at Austin Fit Magazine. We’re often faced with challenges in meeting this goal, but it keeps us on the lookout for new things to make our mission more effective. To that end, over a year ago we established a new vision for our company. We’d like Austin Fit Magazine to be known not only for health and fi tness, but also for its innovative execution.

Technology has had an enormous impact on our society as well. These changes have had a dramatic impact on the publishing business, too. With the widespread deployments of smartphones and tablets, full computer capability is now mobile — and it’s altering the way we consume our media.

We see these paradigm shifts in content delivery as a tremendous opportunity to marry the best of print and digital media for the benefi t of our readers and our advertisers. And we’ve been working hard to deliver these new capabilities to you. We’re already very excited to have launched the fi rst iPad magazine application in Texas in December. Additionally, we will soon follow up with our very own iPhone app.

These investments are part of our ongoing commitment to reach everyone interested in changing the future of our country into one in which healthy is indeed the norm. Providing the most convenient and timely information possible is one way we can ensure that we will meet that goal.

So keep your eye out for more innovation from Austin Fit Magazine and have a wonderful 2011.

Keep Austin Fit,

You voted, we published

We had an overwhelmingly high response on this survey, which means the results are pretty darn reliable, from a statistical point of view

anyway. Based upon the number of responses, we can confi dently say that this is one of the most accurate representations of the preferences of the greater Austin health and fi tness community we’ve ever seen. It’s certainly the most comprehensive and precise survey we’ve ever undertaken. It’s not based on a subjective set of data or what we believe are the correlative variables, but personal choices made by real people.

What’s more, it’s a spot-on representation of our monthly readership, comprised of some 70,000 people. Statistically speaking, your “reader’s choices” represent the preferences

#1

These results are driven purely by you, our readers. We have not tampered with the votes or meddled in the methodology in any way. We simply came

up with the major categories and let you do the rest.

We see this is as the beginning of a reader-generated list that will surely grow over time. Each year we’ll improve our understanding of what

makes the Austin health and fi tness community tick, what you like and what you don’t, and refl ect your preferences with even more breadth and accuracy.

of a six-fi gure health and fi tness population (99 percent confi dence), with a miniscule error margin (less than two percentage points either way).

This year, rather than run the gamet of gyms in this town or share our editorial picks of the best workout facilities in the city, we wanted you

to tell us who you think comprises Austin’s best when it comes to health and fi tness. Since you’re out there experiencing what these businesses have to offer week after week, we fi gured it was time to hear what you really thought. And not surprisingly, you weren’t bashful about sharing.

So our new list of all the best of Austin’s health and fi tness industry was born. We’ve covered 14 different categories, collected thousands of votes and have more than 40 different companies, people and places to highlight on one list. However, keep in mind a few important things when reviewing your choices.

ith around 20,000 members and a voting block unmatched in the Austin fi tness scene, it’s

not particularly surprising that Life Time Fitness has won the National Gym category, garnering almost one-third of the citywide vote. This 24-hour access fi tness metropolis is the epitome of a “big-box” gym, and in

Life Time’s case this is actually a good thing. A one-stop shop for anything and everything fi tness-related, Life Time runs the gamet when it comes to gym offerings — nutrition counseling, personal training, fi tness testing, hundreds of strength and cardio machines, expansive and pristine locker rooms, a gigantic indoor/outdoor pool and sport

courts galore. And though memberships are a little on the pricier side (average fees hover around $100 per month), this doesn’t seem to affect Life Time’s popularity. Due to its size, scale and seemingly never-ending ability to satisfy any fi tness level, the value in a membership here is apparent.

{ W I N N E R } L I F E T I M E F I T N E S S

Arguably the best deal in fi tness anywhere — the YMCA is a community center on steroids. An average monthly fee of $30 will get you access to group fi tness classes, the pool, weight machines, basketball courts and much more. Of course the YMCA is also a top-choice for families and those needing afterschool and day care.

Affordability, convenience, all-day access and a no-frills approach are the special recipe that has made 24 Hour Fitness one of the fastest-growing gyms in America. With fi ve Austin area locations, 24 Hour’s demographic tends to skew slightly younger, attracting gym-goers who want a sleek, faster-paced gym with affordable prices. Try to avoid the mid-day “rush-hour” workouts here, otherwise you could fi nd yourself waiting for a machine.

t’s really no surprise that Lady Bird Lake handily won the Best Outdoor Workout. Options abound for the outdoor athlete, including rowing, stand-up paddling, running, walking and much

Whether it’s those darn holiday pies that tip the

scale a little further than we’d like, or the inspirational reminder of warm, fuzzy family movies that define the holiday season

— whatever it is, the new year is marked with the spirit of fresh starts, new (and sometimes old) resolutions…and change.

This spirit of renewal has not escaped us here at Austin Fit Magazine. Though with each January issue we feature the best gyms in Austin, we too are

switching things up a bit this year — digging a little deeper and shining a spotlight on some people and places that bring fitness to Austin outside of the gym.

The fitness model, the local entrepreneur and the athletic apparel store. At first glance each may seem somewhat ordinary, but upon closer examination we’ve found three Austin entities that not only bring health and fitness to the local community, but something a little more — inspiration.

From Monica Brant, the legendary figure competitor whose appearance alone can inspire

anyone to live a fitter life, to the owner of the Texas Rowing Center, Matt Knifton, whose passion for fitness has brought rowing to the masses. And the passionate yoga and athletic apparel store in downtown Austin — lululemon athletica — whose unique philosophy and unorthodox marketing model elevates fitness in the local community, in part defying typical notions of what a retail business can be. Each, in their own way, epitomizes the meaning of fitness culture in Austin, and truly brings their own passion to the people.

To describe the physical appearance of fitness icon Monica Brant would probably be a waste of time. Anyone who’s been following the world of competitive figure modeling over the past 20 years will be familiar with her face, wavy blonde hair and impressively strong, chiseled physique.

For those who are less familiar with the world of competitive fitness, chances are you’ve at least seen her on one of a hundred national and international magazine covers she’s graced over the years. From Oxygen Magazine to our very own Austin Fit Magazine, Brant’s lean, toned figure and piercing blue eyes have been on display since she landed her first Muscle and Fitness cover back in 1994.

Since then, Brant has gone on to compete and place in an array of professional fitness competitions, including winning the prestigious IFBB Fitness Olympia in 1998, and more recently the 2010 WBFF Professional Figure division.

But who’s the now 40-year-old woman behind all these glossy magazine covers? Apart from her world-renowned reputation and winning smile, what does she really think about herself and the industry she’s been a part of since 1991?

The Imperfect Role Model

What you may not know is that Brant’s surprisingly humble, attributing her success in the fitness industry to “God’s plan.” Like most of us, when Brant looks in the mirror she too finds imperfections and seeks for ways to improve her faults.

“ I don’t look at myself as anything special,” Brant says shyly. “There are a lot of beautiful, fit girls out there. I think God had it all orchestrated, like I’m meant to be doing this.”

Though Brant has been competing since 1991 and is now a role model to generations of figure competitor fans, she’s only won three official titles. Having competed for so long, she says she rarely feels nervous or excited anymore, but finds joy in inspiring others and being “a mom” to the younger girls who’ve admired and looked up to her for years.

“It’s so cute to hear the girls say, ‘I can’t believe I’m on stage with you,’” Brant says. “A lot of girls say I was the reason they got into the sport, and helping encourage and motivate other people is really what keeps me going.”

Still a Kid at Heart

To this day, Brant adores anything with hearts on it (even her cell phone is adorned with pink, rhinestone hearts) and animals. Brant, whose mother was a professional horse trainer, grew up on a 20-acre ranch and began her fitness career at age 7, riding and showing horses of all disciplines.

In fact, Brant’s older brother, Philip Brant III, says he always assumed she would one day become an Olympic-level equestrian.

“Monica had all the tools, support and ability to pursue it to the top if she wanted,” he says. “That said, I feel her success in the fitness industry enables her to reach a far larger and more diverse group of people than would have otherwise been possible.”

An extraordinarily athletic child, growing up Brant did everything from swimming and track to volleyball and gymnastics. She would practice her acrobatic skills in the field by the horse barns, working off trampolines or jumping off the horses themselves.

“No fancy gym facility, equipment or specialized coach,” Philip recalls. “Just an older brother ribbing her and sometimes pretending to ‘spot’ her!”

A Fitness Legend

Monica Brant

In high school Brant was one of a team of four that won the high school 3A state championship mile-relay, setting a record that stood for more than 14 years. In fact, to this day, track is still one of Brant’s workout staples.

Well-rounded and versed in multiple athletic disciplines, she seemed to tackle whatever she did with an air of careless ease, her brother says.

“She took on every challenge as if she was going to a party, ready for fun and laughing as she did it,” he says. “Monica just made it look easy, despite enormous concentration and effort. The truth is she’s never done anything easy, but you wouldn’t know the difference because Monica just doesn’t complain.”

Still an Inspirational Icon

Even today, at age 40, Brant’s influence in the fitness industry is almost impossible to measure. Her fan base reaches across continents and transcends generations, from older die-hard fans to young newbies cutting their competitive teeth. In fact, famous model Jamie Eason, who in many ways represents the new guard of the fitness industry, attributes much of her own success to Brant.

Eason says she first saw the fitness icon while visiting a sports nutritionist seven years ago. He pulled out three pictures for the ex-NFL cheerleader who was looking to get back in shape. Included was one of a curvy 5’10” bikini model, a bodybuilder named Monica Brant.

“Monica looked incredible,” Eason says, recalling the photograph. “Her fitness level was beyond impressive, but she was still very feminine. I went away from that with a goal of trying to build a physique similar to Monica’s. She’s been my inspiration from day one.”

Now a certified personal trainer, nutritionist and successful entrepreneur, Brant continues to inspire aspiring figure models by hosting regular F. E.M. (Fun, Educational, Motivational) Camps in Austin and around the country. They’re a way for other women to learn the lessons Brant has over the last 20 years, and most of all help them achieve their personal goals.

Monica, the Magazine Mogul

Today, the people Brant feels closest to are her family. Her mother, father and older brother, all of whom she says have supported her since day one.

She admits, however, her mother was taken aback the first time she saw her daughter on the cover of Muscle and Fitness in a form-fitting black leotard. She remembers her mother exclaiming, “You have no pants on!” Nevertheless, that cover, Brant explains, “was one of the most exciting moments of my career.”

She vividly recalls finding out that she’d made the cover. “I got home and checked my voicemail. I remember coming to my little apartment and hearing, ‘Hey cover girl!’ on the machine. I went out and bought 10 copies of it,” she says.

Her brother Philip remembers the excitement of seeing his sister on her first national magazine cover, too.

“It was really cool,” he says. “Especially as I’d walk through an airport in some other city and there she was on the newsstands…still just my sister, though. It started to become expensive trying to collect all the magazines she was in. I have to admit I had to stop buying them after the first few dozen!”

Almost a decade later, in 2003, Brant was honored with the rare opportunity to have a solo spot on Muscle and Fitness magazine, something few women in the magazine’s history have ever accomplished.

What are some of the most challenging things you’ve had to overcome in your lifetime in a professional or personal sense? I never look at something as if it’s an obstacle to overcome. Everything you go through, your attitude just has to be right. I guess one thing was doing the fi tness industry my way and not succumbing to the politics that play such a huge role in the industry.

What has been one of the best moments of your career? Well, there are so many, but probably winning the Olympia competition. I only have three in my entire career and that’s just a title that anybody who competes wants to have. It’s the same title Arnold Schwarzenegger has, and it’s a cool, fun title you can never lose!

What are some other hobbies or interests you have outside of the gym? Well, I’m pretty consumed with work most of the time. There’s always something to do. I like hanging with my friends though, riding and taking care of my horses, too. Anytime I’m with animals I feel a sense of refreshment and energy. Plus, there’s just something special about being united with a horse. They’re pack animals, so if you can be a leader to them they’ll look up to you.

What kinds of exercises do you do outside of the gym? A lot of cardio outside of the gym. I can’t stand to be in the gym if I don’t have to be. I live in the Texas Hill Country and love to run up and down hills. I’ll go for my run for 30 to 90 minutes, depending on my schedule and the kind of cardio I need to do. And to most people’s surprise I don’t own an iPod or listen to music. It’s my time to unwind.

How do you deal with your travel schedule and how do you stay in shape traveling so much? It’s not too much of an issue because all

the promoters know I need to work out and eat, so they accommodate it. It’s actually not much of an issue. Eating can be challenging though, so I like to take my own food. I’ll cook stuff and freeze it and put it in checked bags. Believe it or not, sometimes protein and oatmeal are enough.

What is your favorite aspect of your career — and the worst? My favorite is defi nitely inspiring and helping others succeed. I have to do certain things to make sure I make money, but at the end of the day it’s about helping others. That’s what I fi nd most fulfi lling in what can otherwise be a very selfi sh business. My least favorite? Packing, traveling and being organized to leave on a trip all the time. Once I’m there I’m fi ne, but getting there and making sure everything is done before I leave can be a pain.

Do you fi nd it diffi cult to maintain your relationships while traveling all over the world? Not really. Everyone’s used to it, and I’m really good about keeping in touch with the people I care about. These days you can always send a quick note on your Blackberry anytime!

What is your guilty pleasure or your favorite cheat food? I’m a huge PF Changs fan. I get the same thing every time — the Ahi tuna-seared appetizer. And believe it or not, I love their crispy green beans, calamari and Candied Walnut Shrimp. What advice to do you give to young fi tness competitors? You don’t always have to win. It’s a nice thing to share with the girls, to ask them why they’re really doing this. Looking cute is great and all, but what helps me sleep at night is helping others and changing lives.

And your advice for the rest of us? Stay fi t and love life!

We recently sat down with this fi tness legend to fi nd a little more about who she is and what her life is like outside of the gym.

Standing above Lady Bird Lake from the South 1st Street or Congress Avenue Bridge, it’s not unusual to see plenty of activity on the water below. But if you were to look down at the lake, say 10 or 15 years ago, the scene was quite different. Most notably, there were a lot less rowers. In the past 20 years, Austin has become one of the largest rowing communities in the region, and is quickly becoming one of the best rowing spots in the nation, rivaling those historical rowing hotspots such as Boston and Philadelphia.

Much of that expansion has to do with people like Matt Knifton, owner of the Texas Rowing Center (TRC). Tucked away on the northwestern side of Town Lake, perched along the Hike and Bike trail — runners, joggers and strollers may notice the 7,000 square foot dock that seems to hustle and bustle with activity throughout the day.

With somewhere between 1,200 and 1,500 rowers in the city of Austin, nearly half of those are members of the TRC. A born and bred Austin native and avid rower since the late 80s, Knifton says he has seen the rowing scene explode since he became co-owner of the company in 1999.

“It has to do with the Austin Rowing Club, too,” Knifton says. “We’ve taken it to another level by making it all the things it wasn’t historically, but all of this rowing has made Austin a national rowing mecca.”

Starting Early

A passionate rower and fitness enthusiast, Knifton says he grew up in a home where exercise and fitness were a top priority. Always an athletic student, it wasn’t until Knifton came to the University of Texas as an undergraduate that he found his passion for the sport.

“I was the captain of the UT rowing team, and learned to row there as well,” Knifton says.

“Next to my wife, it’s the most influential thing in my life. It’s a great sport, and my mission for this rowing center is to make rowing available to everybody.”

Knifton and his team have worked hard over the past decade to change the image of rowing from an elitist sport, with padlocked rowing docks, to recreation for the masses, with rowers of all ages and levels, an open center and something for just about everyone.

“Most rowing clubs are comprised of people who rowed in college,” Knifton says. “For the rest of the world, if you didn’t row in college you didn’t really have the opportunity. At TRC, only a small sliver learned in college. In fact, most of our rowers learned to row here, which is very unique.”

Today, passionate TRC instructors coach everyone from local middle and high school students (who can receive physical education credit for their participation), to groups of senior citizens looking to enjoy a great physical sport in the beautiful outdoors.

Taking Rowing to the Masses

What seems to truly distinguish the TRC, however, are its numerous outreach programs. In 2005, they began supporting the non-profit organization, Texas River School, which began in 1992 to place at-risk youth on the river.

Previously, the Texas River School had no home. So when Joe Kendall, a member of the TRC management team came to Knifton with the idea of providing a portage space for the group, Knifton says it fit perfectly with TRC’s mission of making a great physical sport accessible to everyone.

“We wanted to support the program because we thought it was important,” Knifton says. “I never questioned whether it was a good fit. We’re here and thriving because of the Austin public, so it’s important that we give back, particularly to groups who need it most.”

That is exactly why Diane McDiarmid, adaptive sports director, came to Knifton in 2009 with the idea of forming their own non-profit, “Texas Rowing For All.” The non-profit organization provides rowing and paddling to people with physical, sensory and cognitive disabilities, and serves the School for the Blind, School of the Deaf and the Wounded Warriors project. It’s funded in part by the Paralympic division of the U.S. Olympic Committee, making the TRC the official “USA Olympic-Paralympic Sports Club” of Austin.

Knifton is also working with the assistant principal of an east Austin middle school to establish rowing scholarship programs. Despite the school’s proximity to the lake, he says most of the students there have rarely, if ever, spent time on the water.

“When there are 25 to 30 kids from East Austin who’ve never been on the river, and they get to spend all day out there, it’s just cool stuff,” says Knifton. “There’s a real community here.”

Though from a business perspective the Texas Rowing Center is one of the most successful in the state, it’s more of a passion for Knifton than a primary source of income. With an undergraduate degree in engineering and a graduate degree from Texas Tech law school, Knifton is a practicing attorney for a local law firm. Only coming in about four hours a week, he attributes the success of the center to his staff who do “all the heavy lifting,” he says.

“This is more of my passion, and the other is my job. This isn’t really work to me; I just love doing it,” he says.

Q A+

Since you took full ownership of the TRC in 2002, what has been your proudest moment? I have a lot of them. They happen most often on Saturday mornings. There’s a real buzz, whether it’s “Texas Rowing For All” or Wounded Warriors or all the rowers and kayakers. When you see that happening, and all of these people of different ages and backgrounds who wouldn’t normally be rowing

— it’s very rewarding. We’re also very proud of our juniors’ program; the kids are regional champions. When I was growing up in Austin there was no junior’s program, no high school rowing in Austin and probably none in Texas. Now our junior program has 120 kids, 60 of which get physical education credit. To have among the best rowing competitors in the country is very rewarding because they’ll grow up loving the sport like I do. It’s great to be able to have that positive impact.

How would you describe TRC’s infl uence on Austin’s fi tness community? We’ve made the river a viable fi tness option for just about everybody in Austin. If somebody wants fi tness or just recreation on the river, there are very few people who couldn’t get access. We have low-cost methods to get people on the river as well as no-cost options to those kids, all the way to memberships and full packages.

How would you rate rowing as a form of exercise? The exercise that you can get from rowing is tremendous. You use your legs, your arms, your back, your core muscles and it’s very cardiovascular. All those things combine to make it fantastic exercise. Austin is one of the best venues for rowing — you can row 365 days a year here and the water is protected, fl at, beautiful and scenic.

How much do you think your personal passion for rowing has affected the success of your business? It has had a lot to do with it, but the biggest thing I’ve done is be open to new ideas from passionate people. I’ve got the right people in the right places, along with a passion that may have started something. Mostly we’ve been able to tap into everybody else’s passion and make that what we offer here.

What are some of your personal goals for the future and for the TRC? One thing we do lack is a fi rst-class facility. We’d like to have showers, bathrooms and a controlled indoor space with running water. We could really take it to the next level. Austin can be the number one rowing destination in the United States, but the next challenge is to create a premiere facility. With that we can create interest in year-round rowing in Austin.

Do you remember what you thought the fi rst time you ever rowed? I remember thinking,

“Wow, rowing is like fl ying on the water; the oars are like wings.” It’s almost like fl ying because you’re just above the water cruising. That really attracted me. It was also an opportunity to continue my athletic career. I became a leader in the program and it was an opportunity for me to play sports in college.

Would you have guessed it would play such an integral part of your life? Honestly, to be able to run the largest rowing organization in the region on Lady Bird Lake is a dream come true, and I couldn’t have imagined it in my wildest dreams.

Apparel with a Purpose

Walk into the lululemon athletica store on West 6th Street and it may seem like any other athletic apparel store. The friendly staff greets customers at the door. The glossy hardwood flooring provides a cozy rustic feel. And the walls and racks are lined with stylish, technical clothing for any fitness discipline: serious runners to yoga lovers.

But browse a little longer and you may start to notice something distinct. Above the shelving rack, where folded stacks of shirts would normally be, there are picture frames displaying the one-, five- and 10-year goals of lululemon employees.

Veer to the right and you’ll catch a glimpse of the lululemon community board. Postings and photos fill the space with healthy restaurant ideas to the best places in Austin to work out.

If you’re still not sure something extraordinary is happening here, then consider this: lululemon employees have been known to dress up as lemons and run down the street simply because they’re “bored.”

Just test it yourself. Walk into the store on any given day and see what happens. Chances are a team of bubbly and enthusiastic managers will explain the importance of fun in the lululemon lifestyle, or they may hand you a free coupon to a local yoga studio as part of their charitable giving program.

It’s all part of the lululemon philosophy: “Elevate the world from mediocrity to greatness,” explains Kara Pendl, a key leader and manager at lululemon. “There’s a huge element of goal setting and personal development. Every employee holds the others accountable to be great. It’s literally taking yourself on every day.”

Understanding the Community

But they’re not just taking themselves on. They’re taking on the entire Austin fitness community. It’s part of lululemon’s unorthodox marketing scheme which focuses on integrating each store into its local surroundings. Their goal is to connect consumers, fitness entrepreneurs and well-designed, form-fitting apparel all at the same time.

Understanding the Community (Cont’d)

Though lululemon athletica is an international corporation, the company uses grassroots strategies to identify specific needs in the community and create “happy, healthy, more fun lives” (as their manifesto reads).

For instance, the 6th Street location holds community events, such as in-store yoga classes (featuring a different studio each week), and “Yoga After Dark” in their parking lot. The entire crew will participate in local fitness classes, too, so they can better recommend options for their customers.

“We do what we say we’re going to do,” says Pendl. “Like promising we’re going to the boot camp at 6 a.m., even if it’s a little painful.

The Ambassador Program

But what may be the biggest key to the store’s success is their ability to permeate through the community through their ambassador program. This is where lululemon forms partnerships with local fitness experts who then become “ambassadors” of the brand. From yogis and cyclists to marathon runners and dancers, ambassadors embody the active, healthy lifestyle that’s at the heart of lululemon culture. “Ambassadors are basically an extension of our employees,” says Schouten.

Lululemon promotes their ambassadors for a one-year term, with two unique events, a photo shoot and all the clothing they want to wear.

In turn, the ambassadors are walking billboards for the brand. They’re provide invaluable feedback about the clothing, which gets passed along to lululemon designers. This gives the company insights about how to improve their products based on the demands of the local community.

“The ambassador program is like the Facebook network for the fitness industry,” says Cody Butler, H.E.A.T. Bootcamp owner and lululemon ambassador. “Rather than using celebrities, lululemon seeks out fitness professionals as a way to promote the brand, but more importantly to connect various teachers, fitness companies and like-minded individuals.”

Each ambassador must go through a rigorous process before their actual appointment. Some submit an application, others are interviewed over coffee, and if they’re a good fit proposed to in some creative and outlandish manner.

“The next proposal in my life will have to be a pretty darn creative one to beat lululemon,” Butler says. “They ambushed my camp, hooping and hollering, then asked to make a special announcement. Before I knew it, they all got down on one knee, presented me with a box that contained my signature red bandanna (with the lululemon logo) and asked me to be their ambassador. Of course, I said yes.”

Q A+

In what ways does lululemon promote fitness in the Austin community? One way is a complimentary class each week in the store. We debut different studios as well as various instructors and beginners to people that practice yoga everyday participate. We also do one major community event every year.

What was the purpose of the Yogasm Festival? It was a big thank you to the Austin community. They give so much to us we just wanted to give back. We brought in music, and all of our ambassadors were teaching. We wanted to give people a chance to experience the local fitness scene.

What kind of person is hired to work at lululemon? It’s someone living an active lifestyle, already excited about fitness — not just yogis, but runners, hockey players, dance instructors; they need to have an open mind and a willingness to try new things.

Are you all passionate about working for lululemon? It’s the coolest job we could imagine. Happiness and loving life is a job requirement. You think you love life and then you come here, and find you really love life.

How is lululemon different from other apparel stores? It’s a company that goes out and asks what the community wants and then caters to that. Our product sets us apart from the competition, but so does our culture.

Do you feel like you’re making a difference? Sometimes the retail aspect seems like the smallest part. The way we’re affecting people as individuals is what it’s really about. For instance, we call customers guests, and we’re not salespeople but educators. We want to know what each guest is looking for and it’s okay if they don’t buy anything. We hear them say, “I feel so much happier after being in the store.” That happens almost every day.

Ryan Priest has experienced fi rst-hand the evolution of the

city's bid to become the fi ttest in America. Driven to help Austin reach that goal, Marshall has committed his life to bringing fi tness and a healthier lifestyle to those around him.

As a college athlete, he experienced a debilitating back injury that changed his approach to physical activity and training. Unable to train for nearly half a year, Marshall's views on fi tness and health began to evolve. During his rehabilitation from back surgery, he learned the importance of core strengthening and functional movements, both of which were crucial to his recovery. With a new appreciation for fi tness, Marshall sought to pursue a career in the industry and to help others live healthy, active lives.

After working for a couple of the larger gyms in the Austin area, Marshall became discouraged, often feeling restricted and unable to provide his clients with the support they needed. After joining Cody Butler and the team of trainers at H.E.A.T., Marshall found his niche.

“The studio allows me the freedom to think outside the box when it comes to training,” he says.

As a personal trainer, Marshall is not limited by the idea that there is one style of exercise for any particular fi tness goal. Instead, he prefers to utilize a variety of techniques to achieve well-rounded physical, mental and emotional health. He calls this type of training “Fusion Fitness.” Marshall describes his profession as a creative outlet, and he draws inspiration from his surroundings and clients.

In the new year, Marshall hopes to help many new Austinites identify and achieve their fi tness goals. According to him, “the ultimate reward for a personal trainer is to be a part of someone's success story.”

Revelation Fitness – Mariah McDonald - Full page

Believe in the impossible. Then make it happen. This is the mantra that made Jim Nettles, Mariah MacDonald and their team the most

sought-after physique transformation coaches in the nation, and their company, Revelation Fitness, one of the country’s fastest-growing start-ups.

For the second year in a row, Revelation Fitness climbs to the top of AFM's list of Austin's Top 10 Trainers. Not surprising coming from a company that caused a stir by running ads that their competition claimed were Photoshopped. “I love the Photoshop controversy,” laughs

Revelation Fitness co-owner Mariah MacDonald. “Mostly because we do absolutely nothing to the images. They’re all raw out of the camera. But the accusation alone is the highest compliment anyone can pay us.”

Jim Nettles explains the story behind the Reveals: “I see this time and again with our clients: they come

with starting goals of weight-loss, getting a beach-ready body, acquiring a six-pack... but at the end of their program they find a new person within them. Accomplishing the impossible has made them grow leaps and bounds never thought possible before!”

Their clients agree. “With their help I went from a size 18 to a size 10 in 12 weeks! Now I’m down to a size 8 and can’t wait to see what a size 4 feels like!” gushes Luci Rau, 31.

Revelation Fitness is launching a new website in February that will showcase the dramatic transformations and progressions they’ve coached. "We have too many untold stories of success,”

general manager Josh Patton explains. “We are our clients' results, and the journey they took to achieve those results. Their journey from day 1 to day 90 defines who we are as a company.”

He then leans in and asks, ”By the way, what’s your story?”

Boot camps can be a great way to change up your

current workout routine and get the results you want. After opening last January, Rockbody Bootcamp has made it their mission to help as many people as possible to meet their goals and live a longer and healthier life. Rockbody offers training for all ages, shapes and levels, and has led clients to amazing results in fat-loss, muscle strengthening, cardio improvement and a better

outlook on life. Rockbody no longer focuses on just bootcamps, but will also offer yoga and Backpack Babies in the new year. No matter where you are, Rockbody will take you to the next level and get you the results you want. Voted “Best Weight-Loss Program” and “Best Workout” by Citysearch, and Brian Prinzo, owner and trainer, won the majority of votes to be named one of

“Austin’s 10 Fittest” by Austin Fit Magazine.

Co-owned by Sammy Skaggs and Alex Quesnot, ATX Boot Camp Living (ATXBCL) provides an outdoor boot camp

program based on experience, trust and motivation. Sammy and Alex are both certified personal trainers through NASM and were previously Master Trainers at 24 Hour Fitness before starting ATXBCL. With more than 9,000 sessions taught between them, the breadth of their abilities range from flexibility to stability, agility, range of motion and strength conditioning. It's known that ATXBCL campers don’t just workout, they train. And they train hard! Fitness isn’t about weight or body fat; it’s about setting goals for yourself, reaching them and then setting new goals. They hold their staff and clients to the highest standard of performance. As a result, they confidently say that they have the best clients in Austin because of their dedication and hard work! Their motto is: “live the lifestyle”because this isn’t temporary, it’s your life!

Chances are you’ve heard someone talking about Camp Gladiator.

And that’s because Camp Gladiator is more than just a boot camp. It’s a movement. A movement that has swept across Austin and quickly become not only the largest and fastest-growing fitness program in the city, but all over the state of Texas. Camp Gladiator is a full-body/functional workout that’s challenging, yet doable for all fitness levels. Each session is different, and since the motto at Camp Gladiator is “kick your own butt,” campers all go at their own pace. The positive atmosphere and incredible group dynamic is why so many Austinites scream, “I love Camp

Gladiator” from the top of their lungs as they do jumping jacks. There are definitely reasons why

Camp Gladiator has become the largest outdoor fitness program in Austin in just 18 months, and been voted “Best of” by virtually every publication and rating agency. Here are just a few of them:

• Campers can attend all 20 Austin locations as much as they want!

• Camp Gladiator is affordable for all! (Consecutive campers pay as little as $69 for four weeks)

• Expert trainers will keep you having fun while getting you fit — utilizing team drills, competitions and games

Camp Gladiator was founded by Austin native Ally Davidson after winning the TV show “American Gladiators” in 2008. Her experiences from training for the show and her background in sports and fitness as a collegiate athlete and certified trainer lay the foundation for Camp Gladiator’s results-driven workouts. Camp Gladiator’s all-star trainers include NFL wide receiver Jeff Ogden, all-American soccer player Ali Christoph, former Texas A&M swimmer Brandon Brickley and Marine Corps veteran Rob Ayala.

for Your Most Successful Athletic Year

6STEPS

With the new year upon us and resolution advice everywhere, it’s the perfect time to get ready for your most successful athletic season yet. If you’re a competitive athlete, you may be in your off-season. If so, this list is timely as you get ready for a new athletic year. But even if you're training

right now, these tips can be used at any time, even in the middle of your season. The following approach may seem a little overboard for casual athletes, but if you really want to improve your performance, following these steps will set you up for your most successful athletic year yet.

64 | January 2011 | a u s t i n f i t m a g a z i n e . c o m

Page 60: January 2011 Issue - Gym Guide

Before you can start setting goals and building your schedule, you need to spend time honestly reflecting on your previous year's performance. Athletes tend to

overlook this crucial step when setting their goals, but reflecting on your past season(s) allows you to make goals you'll be happy with. You may reflect alone, or you may find it helpful to talk it through with someone close to you. Think about how you felt about your achievements, but don't concentrate solely on times and placements. Were you satisfied with your performance? Did it meet your social needs? How did it fit with your family and work life? Think about the whole picture.

After you have a firm handle on last year and lessons learned, it’s time to determine what success means to you. Don’t let your friend’s and family’s views

of success dictate your perceptions. Your definition of success may not be concrete or measurable — it might be as vague as simply having fun on weekend runs with friends. Try not to define success by times or other numbers, which may leave you feeling hopeless. If you think of success only as qualifying for Boston or Kona, then what if it doesn’t come to pass? Was it not a successful year? I like to keep success as a high-level idea built around individual growth and learning. If I grow as an athlete and person, while enjoying the journey, then I feel successful. I save the rigid times and placements as the supporting goals. The best athletes have the drive to win, but understand that success is not defined by a single result. If you figure learning, improving and growing into your definition of success, then the results come naturally.

Before you set your individual goals, you need to identify your end goal. You need to envision a future state: an event, a point in time, a time

on the clock. Just like your definition for success, your vision is going to be personal. It needs to have tangible aspects that you can see and feel when you think about it. This is your time to dream big, but you must believe that it's possible. Your vision shouldn't just skim the surface, like “I think I could maybe run a 3:15 marathon.” Instead make it a strongly-held belief that you know you have the ability and drive to make a reality. You can dream as big as you want, but if it doesn’t match your deepest beliefs, you’re setting yourself up for disaster.

Your vision should be private, because it’s only important to you. Also, make sure that it's consistent with your definitions of success. If your vision is to win your age group at an Ironman, but your measures of success include not missing any of your children’s school events, games or recitals, then you have a huge disconnect.

Once you've completed the above steps, you can fi nally set your goals. Most people skip directly to this step, but without understanding yourself, these goals lack

substance. You’ll want to create several goals that support your vision and this is where you answer the questions of what it will take to achieve them. Once you have a few overarching goals based on the path to your end goal, create two or three supporting sub-goals for each. This is where you can put in your numbers. If you want to run a marathon at a certain pace, then you need to do a tempo run of a certain pace and mileage at least three weeks out. Then break each of those sub-goals down into bullet points of what you need to do to accomplish. After a few minutes, you’ll have a detailed list of what you want and need to do athletically over the year.

Now that you have all of the information, you need to set up your year. This is where you build your schedule, fi ll in races and create training and recovery cycles. Skipping directly to this step is fi ne if you just

want to race for fun. But if your goals include getting faster and/or placements, you should only build your year and schedule as one of the last steps. If you build your schedule fi rst, or haphazardly without critical thought, then your year and the events you’ve chosen won’t necessarily support your vision. Your schedule should help you create the conditions for you to achieve that future state.

I often hear people throw around the word sacrifi ces. I don’t even let that word enter into my thought process. If you believe that you're sacrifi cing a lot to meet your goals, then

you always feel that you’re missing out on something. It starts to seem like your goals have control of your life. Once you have your year set up, goals defi ned and your vision driving you where you want to go, get rid of the idea of sacrifi ce. It’s a simple decision. If you decide to train to make all of the above happen, then there are no sacrifi ces.

How it Works In an endless search to find the best workouts in town, Monica Brant-Peckham has agreed to be our “guinea pig” and take them on full force. Every month we’ll feature a new trainer and a different set of workouts for our readers, while in the process trying to Kick Mo’s Butt! Check out Monica Online @ monicabrant.com & femcamp.net

THE WORKOUT

Monica’s Thoughts

This month was a change of pace for me. Instead of getting a great workout, AFM brought me to Whole Foods (WF) for a tour. Little did I know that WF was so detailed and had so much to offer their customers.

Honestly, WF isn’t close to where I live, so my treks to shop there are limited to when I’m in the area. Maybe they will open one in the Lakeway area?

At any rate, I was

introduced to a handful of very knowledgeable employees, all of whom shared fabulous details about what makes WF stand out.

My official tour guide — Dan Marek (Healthy Eating Specialist and Chef) — started us off in the simple, but beautiful display of fruits and veggies. I could have hung around longer as the colors were so vibrant and full of new items I’d never seen before.

My first lesson was that WF has devised an easy-to-follow, color- coded guide for customers named the ANDI score. It basically shows the ratio of nutrients to calories in a variety of whole foods. The guide helps you quickly find the most nutrient-dense foods, by simply looking for the ANDI purple label. For those in a hurry, just wanting to grab the healthiest foods, finding that purple label food is super easy!

OOh silly fit people, you amuse me. Especially those of you who have ALWAYS been fit. You know the type. The ones who were competitive high school athletes, studied kinesiology and now wear Nike Dry Fit head to toe every single day. I admire you, but I’m here to say that you’re truly missing out on one of the finer things in life. I’m talking about the

“Hey, are you losing weight?” compliment. By always being fit, you’re single-handedly depriving yourself of the love and attention we fluctuating fatties absorb on a regular basis.

In high school I was six feet tall (just as I am today), though I weighed a strapping 145 pounds. I was one of those annoying “I can eat whatever I want and not gain a pound” people. I’m sure you know someone like that. You probably make it a hobby of rolling your eyes everytime you see them.

A few years into college I discovered radio, vending machines and the nightlife of Dallas. This, my friends, is the recipe for weight gain.

I ballooned to 230 pounds and became one of those guys completely comfortable with queso dripping from his chin.

At 30, I decided to put down the pork rinds. I was back in Austin and surrounded by fit people, so I had to lose weight. With the weight-loss came a flowing river of compliments. I would hear things like, “Hey, you’re looking great,” and “Are you losing weight?” Even “Are you related to Billy Blanks, the Tae Bo Guy?” I relished in the compliments. They were conversation-starters, confidence-builders and ego-boosters.

I eventually settled in somewhere around 190 pounds. Since then I fluctuate a good 40 to 50 pounds. I don’t know why my weight swings so much, but I think there are more people like me than not. You probably know what it’s like to fatten up and how great it feels to slim down.

What fun would it be to have a target weight if you were never actually off-target?

It would be like falling in love without ever having felt lonely or being rich without ever having been poor. Actually, I take that back, those both sound like great scenarios.

People who’ve never been a fatty are missing out. I can’t imagine going through life without that moment where you stretch the front of your pants and say, “You could fit another person in here!” Doesn’t Jarrod, the Subway guy, look happy holding up his giant pants? Everyone should have a pair of giant pants for entertainment purposes. I keep a fat driver’s license and even a pair of fat shoes. Yes, I had fat feet.

My weight has moved from the high end to the low end four or five times. I’m tipping the scales at 205 these days. Maybe I’m secretly craving the compliments. 2011 is going to be the year of compliments once again! You can join me if you dedicate yourself to puffing up through the holidays.
