Shar-A-Thon Promise Kept!

Pictured are two WRGN’s Shar-A-Thon hosts Jonathan Broscious and DougHamilton, showing off their Fu Manchus. Their what? During an hour of Shar-A-Thon they promised to grow these “mustaches” if their goal of $3,000 wasreached. They kept their promise, but after the photo, both Fu Manchus wereshaved off.

Although many WRGN listenerschecked into WRGN’s Web Site toview the station’s Christmas greet-ing, ( it brought lots of laughs),visitors to the site was slow duringDecember. However, the “Listen OnLine” segment remains the mostpopular part of the website. It ac-counted for almost half of the site’sactivity. Recorded was 771 uniquepage views, meaning there were 771visits. The length of time spent onthe page was not determined andsome of these visits may have beenby computers just passing through.Nevertheless, this is the newest de-velopment that enables WRGN lis-teners to hear the station anywherein the world. “We believe God willuse it greatly,” said Burl Updyke,

“ At WRGN. as we look back atthe year 2010, it certainly was anexciting one,” said Shirley Updyke,WRGN Program Director. “A briefreview of the year leaves us verythankful for God’s many blessingshere,” she said. The New Year opened with the

announcement that the “Press andListen” project was underway at thestation. Shirl Updyke’s new book,“Vision To Reality,” was recorded byShirl on the MP3 format and madeavailable to vision impaired listenersand those preferring to listen ratherthan read the book. Listeners con-tributed to make this project pos-sible, which included an MP3 playerfor each participant. Fifteen playerswere distributed. In March 2010, WRGN made

available roadway signs to listenerswilling to place them in their neigh-borhoods. A video of the ministry ofWIVH was sent to anyone request-ing it. A book sale brought in over$600 for the benefit of the GoodNews Library and the library wenton-line allowing people to search forbooks, etc. without coming to WRGN.“Mission Possible” reached its goalof $18,000 for the benefit of sisterstation, WIVH and WRGN’s annualYard Sale brought in over $6200 forthe station’s benefit. A huge project got underway at

WIVH, in the Virgin Islands, whichinvolved moving the site of opera-tions to a different tower and install-ing a new, more powerful transmit-ter. Many problems were facedthroughout the three months beforecompletion, but success came as eachtrial was won and now WIVH airswith a much more powerful signal.

WRGN was again present at theLuzerne County Fair and the FallSkate was held. An hour of radiodrama was added to WRGN’s formatand two new Fall programs. A newoutdoor sign was erected at WRGNand an extra day was added to theShar-A-Thon schedule. Excitementmounted as the $148,000 goal wasmet. The year ended with two most

exciting announcements. WRGN cannow be heard the world-over throughthe internet, leaving no fringe areasfor the station. The year came to aclose as station manager, BurlUpdyke, offered an internet receiverto listeners for the minimal cost of$140. With this unit those listeningon the internet no longer need tohear the station over the computerspeakers, but through a radio unit. With the purchase of the receiver, assistance of the installation is be-ing offered by WRGN staff The last and most exciting an-

nouncement was the birth of WIVHoperators’ fourth child, a baby girlon December 31. Read the wholestory in this issue of the Radiogram. “How much more excitement can

we take?” asked Shirl with a smile.“These are showers of blessings andwe can’t seem to get enough, so keepthem coming, Lord,” she said.

Here at the studios...

A wonderful Christmas season isover at the studios. The decorationswill soon come down, including themany cards you sent. Nearly all ofyour commented on your love forWRGN and appreciation of the workof the staff here. Faithful listener, Joan

Lampman, asked for prayer for herdaughter, Heidi and husband SteveShovlin, who experienced a fire intheir home over the holidays. Theyand their children, Tyler and Au-tumn, face many months of repairbefore their home is livable again. They are staying with neighbors. Ralph Tompkins, Wilkes Barre,

was new on “Shirl and You,” re-cently. He is Communications Direc-tor at Stillwater Christian Church, which he describes as a growingchurch. We offer condolences to Tina

Jones, of Wilkes Barre, who recentlylost her daughter to cancer. Shestruggled a long time with the dis-ease but prior to her passing ac-cepted the Lord as her Savior. After much prayer and concern

for Vivian Wickeiser, Wilkes Barre, she is doing much better physically. Billy Burger, Hazleton, has poor

health but remains thankful for howGod is blessing him. When talking toShirl he said he needs someone toclean his oil furnace. The new year brings Tom and

Caroline Ciak, Hunlock Creek, twoexciting events. Their daughters,Emily and Grace will be married onJune 4 and June 18. Stacia has yetto announce her wedding date. Itcould be , that mom and dad arehoping its not this year.

On the morning when many ofShirl’s callers were from the is-lands over WIVH radio, a call wasreceived from David DeCosmo, whosaid he was calling from the islandof Plains Township. It just doesn’tcount, Dave! Sue Hand’s Imagery is celebrat-

ing its 35th anniversary. It’s agreat time to visit her studios. Aspecial calendar of her art workhas been created in celebration ofthe 35 years. Many WRGN listen-ers are picking up the print sheoffered Shar-A-Thon contributors.Everyone’s welcome. Mary Kromer, Moosic, heard

about WRGN from friends and en-joys hearing Jonathan Brosciouson Drive Time, weekday mornings. Hollie Baker, a previous resi-

dent of Hunlock Creek, is now hear-ing WRGN on the internet at herTexas residence. “ We may be thou-sands of miles apart but I still feellike you are a part of my life,” shewrote in her email. Charlie Denton, Wilkes Barre,

gave credit to his friend, BillErdsman, who encouraged him toget back to the Lord and the Chris-tian life. Both are WRGN listeners. Don Mayer surprised “Shirl

and You” listeners when he sang“God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen,”accompanied by himself on theguitar. He emphasized the fact thatthe song’s lyrics tell us Christ willsave our souls from Satan’s power. Be sure to visit us at the stu-

dios, and best wishes for a veryHappy New Year!

January 2011

Dear Ones:

As I typed the date above I almost forgot to add a year. Another yearof radio ministry is behind us and as you read this issue of the Radiogramyou’ll learned that it was a very exciting one. Not for one second have weforgotten that without you this ministry would not survive. So daily wepraise God for how He is working in your lives to enable us to bringChristian radio to Northeastern Pennsylvania. Another year of life is past and we only have one life to live. Our hope

and dream is that WRGN/WIVH will help listeners desire to live it withabandon to God. This year will mark WRGN’s 27th year of ministry and in review of the

past year, we hope the station’s broadcasts have helped listeners thinkmore deeply about their faith, has helped them practice being a disciplemore intently and love God more passionately. WRGN/WIVH carry the teachings of dedicated servants of God whose

desires are the same as ours. We are thankful for their faithfulness inpresenting listeners with a deeper understanding of Jesus, our Savior. Recently, two people have said, how much longer are you going to

work at this ministry? We had never thought of retirement as today’sculture does. Why retire from God’s work when it gives us purpose, peaceand hope of someone else coming to know the Savior as we do. A new year excites us and because developments in electronics and the

computer age change at an amazing rate, the possibility of new accom-plishments continue. The most exciting aspect of it all is that Godcontinues to use these to spread His word and to reach those not yet awareof God’s love for them. Thank you for standing with us. The last year wasour most exciting, yet, and we believe this year will be even greater.

Sincerely Yours and His,

Burl and Shirley Updyke

The Good News Library is a spe-cial place where good reading andviewing awaits everyone. Located atWRGN, it’s open 9:00 a.m. to 4:30p.m. weekdays. “Acts,” is the title of a book by R.

C. Sproul. It is an Expositional com-mentary and has all of Sproul’s hall-marks: charity, liveliness, humor andpathos always expressed in applica-tion to the mind, will, and affections.

An amazing true story is told ona DVD entitled, “The Heart of Texas.”It shows what can happen whengrace and forgiveness triumph overanguish and outrage. Such tendermercy can seem more of a work offiction or a wishful tale, yet everymoment of this unbelievable story istrue. Joni Eareckson Tada talks about

the way God heals in her new book,“A Lifetime of Wisdom,” She sayswas it a fair exchange, my freedom, and a wheelchair for the rubies ofwisdom. An alphabet of biblical poems,

verses and stories are in the book,“Teach Them To Your Children.”The book is designed to teach bibli-cal concepts to children of any agethrough scriptures, poems, and sto-ries that correspond with each letterin the alphabet. It’s a tool withwhich parents may use to discipletheir children. In the book, “This Sacred Mo-

ment,” the author challenges read-ers to become holy right where theyare, right in the midst of “ordinary”life. This book is designed to fitrealistically into readers’ already fulllives. A CD is a compliation entitled,

“The Best of A Word With You.” It’sdone by Ron Hutchcraft and arehighlights from the popular dailyradio broadcast. The challengestherein will captivate the listenerwith a-slice-of- life stories and pow-erful biblical insights. It motivatesthe listener to aggressively pursuetheir own spiritual revolution.
