and downs, life is a very special gift, and I’ve come to realize that mine has been pretty darn good. With the arrival of the new year, there seems to be a lot of speculation about what life holds in store for us as individuals, as a nation, as well as for the rest of the world. Depending on who you talk to, there is a huge range of thought on that subject, and I’m sure we could debate the issue for hours on end. But what about us, the automotive hobbyists? While the commercial part of our hobby seems to be continuing at an all-time high, with the aftermarket industry now turning over billions of dollars, the forecast has a bunch of issues that seem kind of scary. What about the environment? Is it in danger of becoming so bad that transportation as we know it will be radically changed, or even eliminated? Will government continue to pass well meaning, but not so well thought out legislation that impacts our hobby? Then, of course, there’s the economy. Who can accurately guess what’s going to happen there? Again, depending on who you talk to we’re heading for a horrible crash, are rounding the corner on the road to an all-time high level of prosperity, or anything in between. For our household, we’re moving ahead with the thought that we may not ever see an economy as robust as what we might have experienced in the past, but things are still pretty good, and we’re doing ok. How that applies to whether or not we get to “keep on truckin’” is….yes we do…and we will!! While it takes us a little longer to put together the money to buy those ‘special’ parts, it’s still doable. Let’s face it. Our choice of hobbies, old Ford trucks, is, for the vast majority of us, an endeavor that utilizes our “discretionary cash”, and there’s just not as much of that hanging around these days. So, as a group, how do we move forward from here? While there are still a large number of “Mega-Shows” (i.e.—Goodguys, NSRA events, F-100 Nationals, etc.) out there, a number of the smaller shows seem to be struggling, or have even disappeared. Also, I can attest to the fact that getting donations from vendors to help support our events is getting more difficult every day. Still, the shows, runs, cruise nights, and other activities with and for our vehicles is a huge, huge part of what keeps our hobby going. Given the changing economic landscape, how do we keep these events going? First and foremost we need to PARTICIPATE!! Not just by attending, but by helping put these events together as well. No matter how big, or how small the event, there’s always more things to do than there are people to do them. Even if it’s only one small task, pitch in and help out. You might be surprised, it’s usually quite rewarding to do so. Next, invite your friends along. If they have a special interest vehicle, they’ll fit right in and may even get excited enough to join in by helping next time. If they don’t have a special interest vehicle, exposure to what we do could even fire them up to look for a vehicle to buy and become a part of the whole car scene. Probably the single largest issue our hobby is facing is who are we going to “pass the torch” to? I know it’s hard to believe, but none of us are getting any younger. It’s nothing new or original to say we need to get young people involved. There are even young people coming on board all the time, but I fear that it’s not happening as fast as us old geezers are dropping out. We need to understand, we got into this hobby because we wanted to re-live what we experienced (or wish that we had) in our youth. The youth of today don’t have any of those same memories or experiences, so they aren’t naturally drawn to the old vehicles like we are. So do we open our ranks to newer vehicles? That’s a whole other issue for discussion, isn’t it? Whether or not we go that route, it’s obvious that we need to find a way to get more “kids” involved if we want to see our hobby continue. My last point….CLUBS. I’ve been around the old car hobby for a long, long time (even before there were old cars), and I was always the first to say, “I don’t need to belong to a car club. I’m happy being a ‘Lone Wolf’.” I think that in my blissful ignorance I must have thought all the events I liked to attend just happened magically. I never stopped to pay any attention to who was doing all the work. Organizing everything for our enjoyment. Putting up the money to reserve venues, or locking in food providers, or paying up front for entertainment, or the many other things needed to make an event even happen, much less be successful. After moving down to Northern California and realizing that I didn’t know anyone involved in the hobby, I came to the conclusion that the most logical way to quickly find people to network with would be to join a car club. Shortly thereafter, I ran into some members of Ford F-100 Elite, and decided that would be a good place to start. After joining the club, I started realizing that this is where the foundation of the hobby lies. Without the clubs, there would be only commercially driven events, and the personal interaction, in all likelihood, wouldn’t happen. Therefore, I want to strongly encourage each and every one of us to support our club. We are somewhat unique in that we have a number of chapters, spread over a large area, but each chapter is a club within the club. We’ve got some healthy chapters, and we’ve got some anemic chapters, but for all of us, this club is here for us. Let’s support it to our fullest ability. Every organization I’ve ever been involved with has things that I felt were wrong, or upsetting, or whatever, and we’re no exception, but this club is a gift we’ve been given, and I for one appreciate that gift. So, for 2012, let’s get behind our club, and our hobby, and purpose to step up and contribute our time and efforts at a minimum of one step higher than we did last year. (Note: my intent in writing all this stuff is to try to get everyone to think about our hobby, and our club, a little bit, in hopes of getting some feedback of your thoughts and ideas. So let me know. I’d like to have an occasional “Letters To The Editor” column.)

************************************************************************************* A Russian, an American, and a blonde were talking one day. The Russian said, “We were the first in space!” The American said, “We were the first on the moon!” The blonde said, “So what? We’re going to be the first on the sun!” The Russian and the American looked at each other and shook their heads. “You can’t land on the sun, you idiot! You’ll burn up!” said the Russian. To which the blonde replied, “We’re not stupid, you know. We’re going at night!”

EEAASSTTBBAAYY BBAANNTTEERR By: Ken Rogers

Hi from East Bay, Our only meeting in December, which I missed (Surgery on my knee), we elected new officers for 2012, and planned a Christmas get together in January, since everyone is too busy in December. At this time we’re looking forward to Morro Bay for the North-South Run this year. Hope there’s a good turnout. Suggest early reservations for rooms at the Inn at Morro Bay….remember, you were warned. I understand rooms are already going fast. On the North Coast, Morro Bay marks the gateway to Highway 1, frequently billed as the world’s most scenic highway. Morro Rock, the focal point of this fishing village, provides a backdrop for exquisite sunsets, and a sanctuary for hundreds of migrating birds. Don’t forget your camera. If you have never been to Morro Bay, January 13th thru 16th they are celebrating the Winter Bird Festival. There will be walks, cruises, workshops, displays, and vender booths in honor of this “globally important bird area” which is home to, or visited by, over 200 bird species. Check it out. Don’t let fluid checks leak out of your maintenance routine. Leaking fluids mean that your F-100 needs maintenance. Oil, power steering fluid, transmission fluid, and brake fluid are all flammable and can burst into flame when they meet a hot engine or exhaust component. Remember, fluid leaks are the number one cause of vehicle fires. I have known of two F-100’s that have caught fire in my 43 years of F-100 trucking. Both trucks were from Southern California and both were repaired. Both fires were caused by fluid leaks. DID YOU KNOW? There are over 300 species of humming birds, but only 16 breed in the U.S. The male humming bird has brighter colors than the female. Females lay 2 eggs in the nest. They’re found only in the Western Hemisphere, and require a place that has nectar producing flowers. Humming bird feeders should be kept out of the sun. Enjoy your hummers. They need to feed every 15 minutes. Keep On Truckin’ Ken Rogers

The Modesto Chapter got together for the annual run to the Vintage Faire Mall on December 11th. We came together as a group to pick the names of 40 children from the Soroptomist Christmas Tree. The Club allotted $100 per child to make the Christmas wishes of needy children in the area come true. With list and money in hand, we separated to do our Christmas shopping. We made warm clothing a priority with a Christmas toy surprise thrown in. This outing is always a special for our group, as we feel we are making a difference in the lives of the little ones. Participating were Carl and Linda Piercefield, Russell and Eunice Holland, Tom and Cheryl Day, Chris Souza and Dena, Bob and Susan Hansen, John and Linda Walsh, Dusty and Debbie Johnson, with Jerrilynn, Mackenzie, and Connor, Ralph and Sherrel Haverson, Bill and Ieko Click, Wayne King, Paul, Joyce and Paul, Jr. King, John and Judy Snider, Renee Sveen, Mike, Bailey and Nathaniel Keller, Jeff and Jamison Davis.

To recap our year here in Modesto, we put on 3 charity car shows and our members participated in a number of local car shows and club runs. Through the 3 car shows, we were able to collect over $14,000, which we happily distributed to the following charities:

Shriners Childrens Hospital -- $5,000 Community Hospice -- $2,500 Soroptomist Christmas Tree -- $4,000 Marfan Foundation -- $2,465 Kool Cars for Charity Show -- $100 Waterford Seniors -- $50

We are proud of our members for their participation in making the Modesto Chapter a success!

Happy New Year !

While on a car trip, an older couple stopped at a roadside restaurant for lunch. The woman left her glasses on the table but didn’t miss them until they were back on the highway. The man fussed and fumed as he drove all the way back to the restaurant. When they finally arrived, and the wife got out of the car to retrieve her glasses, he said, “While you’re in there, you may as well get my hat, too”. *****
