class” (class 14-154) for 2012 need to contact the Johnson

weeks after the order date. Families will be contacted the

JOHNSON COUNTY BRED RABBIT
RABBIT PROJECT MEMBERS: Look for a mailing coming
to you on this. This year there will be a new class for 4-H/
FFA members to participate in at fair. It is called: Johnson
County Bred Junior Rabbit Class. The goal for this class is
to encourage 4-H/FFA members to learn how to breed
and raise their own rabbits. The rabbit for this class needs
to be born between Jan. 26th- March 31st – thus meeting
the criteria for Jr. Class criteria (under 6 months of age).
The rabbit breeder is the owner of the rabbits at the time
of breeding and birth of kits in Johnson County. 4-H/FFA
members must certify by email or standard mail to Jeff
Englert with the name of buck and doe used in the
breeding program, date bred, and the date and number of
kits born in the litter to be eligible for the Johnson County
Jr. Bred Jr. Class Rabbit. Email Address for Jeff Englert:
[email protected] or Standard Mail: Jeff Englert, 416
Day St. NW, Cedar Rapids, IA 52405.
ANIMAL IDS WILL BE DONE ONLINE
Those 4-H’ers who verify a market steer or market
heifer during the county beef weigh-in will need to
confirm data entered by county extension staff prior to
January 30th in order for it to be accepted by the State 4-
H office. PLEASE SEE “Animal ID online” and “Livestock
verification process” help sheets at: http://
www.extension.iastate.edu/4h/enrollment/
helpsheets.htm. Your enrollment must have been
completed online before you can do these steps.
FEEDER PIG PROGRAM The Johnson County Pork Council will sponsor a maximum of 6 pigs/youth who are exhibitors of swine. Members will pay for the feeder pigs from sale proceeds after the County Fair. Please contact Kevin Hotz at 319-629-5320 by February 29 for information. FOOD SAFETY QUALITY ASSURANCE (FSQA) FSQA Training dates have been set for 2012! Any 4-H or FFA member showing livestock at the Johnson County 4-H & FFA Fair are required to be FSQA certified. The required FSQA certification livestock species are: Market beef, breeding beef, dairy cow, dairy goat, meat goat, sheep, swine, poultry, and rabbit. Bucket bottle calf and horse are not required. The dates for FSQA training in Johnson County are Monday, April 23, 2012, from 6:30 - 8:30 and Monday, May 7, 2012, from 6:30 - 8:30. Remember that last year was the year of change - instead of exhibitors being certified per age, it is now grade levels and date of training. Youth in grades 4 -6 are required to attend a training every year until they reach 7th grade. Youth in grades 7 - 9 will have the option of attending a training every year or passing a test with 70% which will certify them until they reach 10th grade. Youth in grades 10 - 12 will also have the option to attend a yearly training or pass a test with 70% which will certify them until they turn 20 years old. It is recommended that youth attend the full FSQA training prior to attempting to take the test! Parents are welcome to sit-in on the trainings as well! If you are a re-enrolled 4-H member, you will be able to see when your FSQA certificate expires on 4-H Online! This can only be done when you have been re-enrolled, so if you have not re-enrolled online yet, please do so soon!!! Check out the kids and teens/4-H tab on the top left side of this page for more information on 4-H Online. Questions? Please call Kathy at 319-337-2145 or email her at [email protected].
