January 2013 Forecast
Tuesday, January 1, 2013 Sign: Leo
Nakshatra: Magha from 1:15 am EST for rest of day, PST all day until 11:28 pm
Tithi: Panchami
Day: Mars
On this first day of the Gregorian calendar, the Moon is in Leo, which is ruled by the Sun. This
brings a very majestic, regal quality to the day. The Sun is the planet of power. When the Moon
goes through Leo, we feel a sense of power in our mind and heart. The Lion Heart will be in your
life on Tuesday, January 1.
The Nakshatra is Magha, which is ruled by the Pitris, the Divine Ancestors. This is the part of
Leo which has to do with royalty, the King who sits on the throne of power. Its symbol is a royal
throne, or a palanquin that was used to carry royalty through the villages. That throne comes
from our lineage, from our past. That includes our family in this lifetime, but also the teachers
that came before this lifetime -- when you remember that we are all celestial divine beings.
Since this Nakshatra relates to these Divine Ancestors, this is a good day to connect to your
family, but also to your cosmic family and your cosmic heritage.
Today the Moon also receives a one-way aspect from Mars: He is in Capricorn, and he aspects 8
houses in front of him. With the Moon in the Fire sign of Leo, aspected by Mars which is in his
sign of greatest exaltation, you can expect to feel a Fiery dynamic -- but also a potentially
irritable dynamic.
So be careful about getting irritated today. On the positive side, Mars’ Exaltation can make this a
very clarifying and strengthening aspect on the Moon. This is a good day for mental strength and
clarity, discrimination and emotional courage.
It is the 5th Lunar Day, called Panchami. This is good for creativity in general. Auspicious
endeavors are supported on Panchami. It is also good for taking medicines and herbal remedies.
Panchami is ruled by the Moon, so a good sense of feeling and connection is also supported by
the day’s energies.

Tuesday is ruled by Mars. Since Mars is also aspecting the Moon, this makes it a good day for
personal strength and courage.
Wednesday, January 2, 2013 Sign: Leo
Nakshatra: Purva Phalguni from 2:28 am EST for rest of day, PST all day
Tithi: Shashthi
Day: Mercury
On Wednesday, the Moon is still in Leo, but it moves to Purva Phalguni Nakshatra. It still retains
Leo’s qualities of strength, boldness, individuality, and the clarity of purpose we have, when we
act through our own strength and give light to the world. Purva Phalguni is the part of Leo where
we relax into the seat of power and the place of strength. The previous Nakshatra, Magha, also
has to do with strength and power. But in Purva Phalguni, once we have the power, we can get
lazy and clannish. We can try to take from the kingdom, and enjoy all the fruits of our labors,
rather than remain generous and give the power and delight and joy to others.
The deity of Purva Phalguni is Bagha, the God of Delight, so this plays into that idea. The ruler
of the Nakshatra is Venus, where we want to either enjoy for ourself, or allow others to enjoy.
This is a big lesson today with the Moon in Leo. It is still aspected by Mars, so you will still feel
that fire of intensity in the mind. Make sure to be generous with your power, rather than try to
use it and trade it for personal pleasure. There is nothing wrong with enjoying life, but it can be
at the expense of others. This can be difficult in Leo, because Leo is about our personal power
and wanting to give it away, being generous in order to fulfill the promise of Leo.
It is the 6th Lunar Day, called Shashthi, ruled by Mars in his form of Subramania, the youngest
son of Lord Shiva. Therefore the Mars quality continues from Tuesday into Wednesday. The 6th
Lunar Day also has to do with celebrations and victories, so it is a great day for victory.
Wednesday is ruled by Mercury, who is related to Lord Vishnu, preserving and balancing all of
Creation. As it is the middle of the week (and, for many people, January 2 is the first day back at
work after a vacation), it is a good day for making adjustments to what happened earlier in the
week.
Thursday, January 3, 2013 Sign: Virgo
Nakshatra: Uttara Phalguni from 3:13 am EST, 00:13 am PST, for rest of day
Tithi: Saptami
Day: Jupiter
_____________________________________________________________________________________________
American Academy of Vedic Art and Science 3
On Thursday, the Moon goes into Virgo, ruled by Mercury. Virgo is the feminine reflective
quality of Mercury, the psychological quality of Mercury which is about organizing all the
details, and managing the circumstances that come as a result. This creates a feeling in our mind
which doesn’t always feel very good, because we are aware of all the details that need to be
managed. Therefore, this can be a difficult placement for the Moon.
You want to be careful to not feel the pressure of those details, but know that you will be
challenged to put them all in the right place. Notice what people say, and what they want. Think
of how to better serve the people in your life, and greater benefit yourself at the same time, by
manifesting what is in your mind and bringing it out into the tangible world.
Thursday’s Nakshatra is Uttara Phalguni, which is ruled by the Sun. The presiding Deity is
Aryaman, the God of contracts and legalities. The previous Nakshatra, Purva Phalguni, has a lot
to do with personal pleasure and romance, including courtship. In Uttara Phalguni, we get
married. (Purva = former; Uttara = latter.)
Therefore this is a marriage Nakshatra, but it is also about any kind of official business. This
makes it good for taxes. If you are self-employed in the United States, use this day to start
getting your tax records in order. Other official government business is also important in Uttara
Phalguni.
Today’s biggest aspect comes from Jupiter in Taurus, in Rohini Nakshatra, who aspects 5 houses
in front of him. Even though we may feel burdened by the details, Jupiter aspecting from Taurus
brings great hope and grace and expansion into that process. So as you filter through the details,
Jupiter gives you the ability to connect them to the bigger and higher picture. That includes your
teachings, and those things that you are inspired towards. These are greatly supported on
Thursday.
It is the 7th Lunar Day, called Saptami. It is related to Lord Indra, King of the God. Therefore,
live like a King, act like a King, and move with autonomy on Thursday. As Jupiter is also related
to Lord Indra as well as being the ruler of Thursday, there is a lot of Jupiter energy today,
especially with Jupiter aspecting the Moon. This expansive, mighty, courageous, force of good
can be important, but you also have to be careful to not become ungrounded, mindlessly hopeful,
or too dogmatic.
Friday, January 4, 2013 Sign: Virgo
Nakshatra: Hasta from 3:28 am EST, 00:28 am PST, for rest of day
Tithi: Ashtami
Day: Venus
On Friday, the Moon is still in Virgo, so we still have that detail-oriented focus, and a practical,
rational approach. Virgo is also about purity of intention. Its Sanskrit name is “Kanya,” meaning
______________________________________________________________________________
American Academy of Vedic Art and Science
4
a young virgin girl, who has a purity of heart, without a lot of “charge” around personal desires
and passions.
The Nakshatra is Hasta, which literally means “hand.” It is about manifesting what we conceive
in our minds, and bringing it into our hand. Hasta can also be about some attachment that we
need to let go of, through the fruit of our labors and actions. The Deity is Savitur, the God
invoked in the Gayatri mantra, a great mantra for manifesting health and happiness and creating
what you want in life. Therefore this is a great day for taking all those details and bringing them
into a tangible form. It is good for massage, healing, gardening, anything that involves using
your hands.
The Jupiter aspect from Taurus continues very prominently on Friday. Jupiter is at 13 degrees
Taurus, and the Moon is at 16 degrees of Virgo, a very powerful Jupiter-Moon aspect. Friday is
ruled by Venus, but it is also the 8th Lunar Day. Ruled by the Eight Vasus, the forces of
creativity, this can be quite a powerful creative day. The Eight Vasus are the components that we
use to create with. Virgo is where we take all these elements and stitch them together.
Venus, who rules Fridays, is also about making things more beautiful, pleasant, and enjoyable.
This too is a big lesson and an important energy on Friday January 4.
Saturday, January 5, 2013 Sign: Libra (Last Quarter Moon)
Nakshatra: Chitra from 3:11 am EST for rest of day, PST 00:11 am to 11:22 pm
Tithi: Navami
Day: Saturn
Halfway through the day on Saturday, the Moon moves into Libra, ruled by Venus. Libra has to
do with our social obligations, including our romantic relationships, and the social contract in all
its forms. In our personal relationships, Libra is where we yield and compromise to achieve
mutual goals with another person (of course, pleasure is one of those goals, although not the only
one). But Libra is also about how our personal relationships fit into a social framework -- how
we all mutually benefit from our interactions in the world.
Venus, the ruler, motivates us to satisfy our personal desires, especially in personal relationships.
But with Saturn also now in Libra, the sign where he is Exalted, our personal relationships take
on a much larger context. There is much more of a commitment, not just to our personal
relationships, but to our relationships meaning something bigger in the context of the world.
We will begin to feel this at about 3 pm Eastern, Noon Pacific, on Saturday, when the Moon
moves to Libra. The earlier part of the day, the Moon is still in Virgo, where the detail-oriented
energies from Friday still apply.

Today’s Nakshatra is Chitra, ruled by Mars. Its Deity is Vishwa Karma, the Divine Architect
who created the Cosmos. This Nakshatra can literally give architectural gifts. It is a good day to
do things in the home, including building or making additions to a home. But anything that is
structural, architectural, or mechanical, even building a website or building or making art --
anything that you want to last a long time -- is supported here.
This quality of the transition from Virgo to Libra -- Chitra straddles both signs -- shows how you
can use attention to detail in creating something that everyone can enjoy. Mars gives this section
of the zodiac great luster and color.
It is Saturday, ruled by Saturn, which is joined the Moon for the next couple of days as the Moon
goes through Libra. Therefore, you may feel a bit emotionally heavy on this day. It is also the 9th
Lunar day, which can be difficult, as it is related to the Sarpa. The Sarpa is the serpent, or snake.
It’s about exploring the deeper hidden mysteries of life, and transforming the poison of the
serpent into a great elixir.
So you could be feeling some confusing, diabolical energies on Saturday. Your challenge is to be
able to transform them, not be overwhelmed by them. The power of Saturn to make a
commitment to long-term plans and structures, will help you.
Sunday, January 6, 2013 Sign: Libra
Nakshatra: Swati from 2:22 am EST for rest of day, PST all day until 10 pm, then Vishakha
Tithi: Dashami
Day: Sun
On Sunday, January 6th, the Moon is still in Libra, and now within a couple of degrees of Saturn.
Exalted Saturn in Libra gives a lot of capacity for commitment to the goal of maintaining the
social contract (described in Saturday’s forecast), and also the willingness to be humble in the
face of others, without feeling like we are letting ourselves down or selling-out our own personal
strength.
The Moon is in Swati Nakshatra, along with Saturn. Swati is ruled by Rahu. The Deity of Swati
is Vayu, who roams all over the Earth dispensing energy. It is very much about the power to
scatter, to empower through the breath, through Prana.
Vayu and Hanuman, the Hindu Monkey God, are both related to this principle. In his form as
Hanuman, Vayu is the general of the army of monkeys. This is a metaphor for bringing all of our
crazy monkey ideas into a concentrated form -- because usually our mind is running all over the
place, undisciplined. When we bring all of that monkey-mind energy into focus for service, it
becomes very powerful. This is what Hanuman is: a very powerful servant of the Lord. He is
superhuman strength, which is the power of Prana, or vitality in the breath. Therefore, this is a
good day for breath practices such as Pranayama.

We don’t have any prominent aspects today, except for the Moon joined Saturn. This brings a
heaviness to the mind, and we might feel a sense of depression a little bit.
It is the 10th Lunar Day, called Dashami, which is ruled by the Sun. This brings a consistent
uplifting nature to the mind, and makes it necessary to honor Dharma and righteousness and
consistency.
Sunday is also ruled by the Sun. It is a really a good day for purification, and for honoring our
own power and strength.
Monday, January 7, 2013 Sign: Libra -- Scorpio
Nakshatra: Visakha 1:00 am EST to 11:09 pm; PST all day until 8:09 pm, then Anuradha
Tithi: Ekadashi
Day: Moon
On Monday, January 7th, the Moon is still at the very end of Libra in Visakha Nakshatra. This is
a star of purpose, achievement, accomplishment, and righteousness, ruled by Jupiter. Its Deities
are Indra and Agni.
This is where the Mind, symbolized by the Moon, can get into a bit of trouble, because the
Mind/Moon is not really about righteousness -- it is about connection. These are very different
things. This is one of the reasons why the Moon is debilitated in this section of the zodiac.
The Moon will be debilitated on Monday as it moves from Libra into Scorpio. Visakha has a
very crusading nature. Its principles and ideals are supportive for planets like Mars, Jupiter, the
Sun, and even Saturn. But the Moon is where we want to be peaceful and feel good. The Moon is
also very close to the North Node, which is about to change signs. So there is a lot of uncertainty
in the mind on Monday, as the Moon moves from Libra to Scorpio.
The aspects onto the Moon from planets that are more distant, are not prominent today. But Rahu
and Saturn are very close on the Moon now. Aspects from these two can bring stress, emotional
fears and pressure -- maybe even some paranoia. Be careful of that, today.
It is Ekadashi, the 11th Lunar Day, ruled by Lord Rudra and Lord Shiva. It is good for
sacrificing our pleasure and happiness. But it is also a day to worship Lord Vishnu by fasting and
other kinds of penance or tapas. With the Moon joined Rahu, this would be a good use of the
day’s energies.
Monday is ruled by the Moon, which also has the quality of Lord Shiva -- another good reason to
worship Lord Shiva on this Monday.

Tuesday, January 8, 2013 Sign: Scorpio
Nakshatra: Anuradha EST all day until 8:54; PST all day until 5:54 pm, then Jyestha
Tithi: Dwadashi
Day: Mars
On Tuesday, January 8, the Moon is fully in Scorpio, in the Nakshatra of Anuradha. The Moon is
debilitated in Scorpio because this is the part of the zodiac where we tend to become fixated on
our emotional stress, vulnerability, and fear. It can be quite difficult, because the Moon wants to
feel good and be comfortable and happy, not worried about not feeling peaceful, or not being
strong enough.
The planets that do well here are the Sun, Mars, and Jupiter: the courageous planets that take-on
our emotional fears and shortcomings. The Moon just feels overwhelmed by all that. Therefore,
for the next couple of days while the Moon is in Scorpio, we may feel like we are trying to
strengthen our emotional vulnerabilities . . . and not succeeding at it.
Anuradha is ruled by Saturn. Its Deity is Mitra, which means “friend,” God as a Divine Friend.
This is a very powerful concept, and an especially important one for Scorpio. People who have
Scorpio really prominent in their charts, tend to be too emotionally involved, and extrapolate a
“pound of flesh” from someone whom they think is not being a good friend to them. They need
to learn to yield a little bit, and be a good friend to others. By showing up for others in this way,
Scorpio can be quite emotionally heroic.
Bear this in mind on Tuesday: Rather than get emotionally triggered, be a good friend to others.
Be like Radha -- “AnuRadha” --who was the most beloved of Lord Krishna.
There is an aspect from Jupiter, however: Jupiter in Taurus is opposite the Moon. This brings
great learning and teaching through the emotional stress. Jupiter aspects are a great healing balm
to Scorpio problems. We get a greater understanding of what is happening when the Moon is
aspected by Jupiter.
It is the 12th Lunar Day, called Dwadashi, ruled by the Sun. It is similar to the 10th Lunar Day,
also ruled by the Sun, the God of Dharma, righteousness. Dwadashi honors the clarity and truth
that comes from the Sun. It gives us a sense of dignity and pride in our own personal power.
These are important things to remember as the Moon goes through Scorpio.

Tuesday is ruled by Mars, which also rules Scorpio. It is a planet of courage, so if we get too far
away from our own personal power and courage, we could have a tendency to fight and argue on
this Tuesday. Instead, reach out to others to strengthen your own feeling of being strong, safe
and connected. We must connect with the source that is deeper than all of the people outside of
us.
Wednesday, January 9, 2013 Sign: Scorpio
Nakshatra: Jyeshtha EST all day until 6:22 pm, PST all day until 3:22 pm, then Mula
Tithi: Trayodashi
Day: Mercury
On Wednesday, the Moon is still in Scorpio, in Jyeshtha Nakshatra which is the end of Scorpio.
It is ruled by Mercury. Jyeshtha is that part of us that tends to do battle over our principles with
others. We want to struggle and fight if we feel mistreated. But Mercury, the ruler, calls us to
exercise more flexibility and discrimination. Be aware of this on Wednesday.
The Deity of Jyeshtha is Lord Indra, the King who returned the water to Earth after a big dragon
swallowed all the water, and Lord Indra too. Indra then cut his way out of the belly of the beast,
releasing all the water and returning it back to Earth. This section of Scorpio is capable of that
level of heroism. It is a deep metaphor for Scorpio, where we can so often feel swallowed-up by
a situation, yet we are challenged to cut our way back, and restore love and vitality to others.
It is the 13th Lunar Day, called Trayodashi, ruled by the God Karma Deva, better known in the
West as Cupid. He establishes the desire for happiness, where we want to feel the joy of life. Be
careful where you find the joy of love today, but the 13th Lunar Day is definitely a time where
we can look to express the joy of life.
Wednesday is ruled by Mercury, which also ruled Jyeshtha, so there is a lot of Mercury energy
today. Make sure to stay flexible and peaceful.
Thursday, January 10, 2013 Sign: Sagittarius
Nakshatra: Mula EST all day to 3:41 pm, PST in morning to 12:41 pm, then Purva Ashadha
Tithi: Chaturdashi
Day: Jupiter
On Thursday, the Moon has gone into Sagittarius, ruled by Jupiter. This sign is the masculine
side of Jupiter, which is about actively pursuing our philosophies in life, and our higher
principles. These include religion, and the sense of meaning, hope, and purpose that makes life
worth living. This energy of Jupiter helps us rise above the day-to-day mundane problems of the
_____________________________________________________________________________________________
American Academy of Vedic Art and Science 9
world, and gives us a sense of purpose and direction. This is the mood for the next couple of
days, while the Moon is in Sagittarius.
The Nakshatra for January 10th is Mula, ruled by Ketu, the South Node. Ketu is about looking
back and concentrating our energy on what came before. It gives us a lot of power and
discrimination to do that. The Deity of Mula is Nirriti, which is an older version of the Goddess
Kali, the Goddess of self-destruction and protection who destroys pain and weakness in our mind
and heart.
This is an important metaphor for Thursday, because this is the first Nakshatra that comes after
Scorpio, where we can get “stuck” in all of our emotional pain. The first Nakshatra in Sagittarius
seeks to liberate us from that -- it smashes and destroys that heaviness. So on this day we have an
impetus to destroy our stuck emotional ideas.
Saturn is casting a one-way aspect three houses in front of him, directly on where the Moon is
now. This aspect gives the power to concentrate on whatever is being indicated -- in this case,
the power to smash and destroy our internal weakness. But as Saturn aspects tend to feel fairly
heavy, it might also bring some emotional stress and worry as well.
It is the 14th Lunar Day, called Chaturdashi. This Day is also ruled by the Goddess Kali. It is
right before the New Moon, so the Moon is very dark in the sky and close to the Sun. Therefore
we will feel endings, and the burning of the Karmas of the previous cycle.
Thursday is ruled by Jupiter, and the Moon is in Jupiter-ruled Sagittarius. Therefore, there is still
a lot of hope, inspiration and purpose on this day, even in the midst of all the other indications.
The other thing to know is that the Moon is very late in Mula, so what happens is in the middle
of the day, the Moon with go into Purva Ashadha, where it will stay for about half of the next
day. The Nakshatras change right in the middle of the day. Purva Ashadha is ruled by Venus. Its
Deity is Apas, God of the Ocean. Purva Ashadha and Uttara Ashadha (which follows on Friday),
mean “Early Victory” and “Later Victory.”
The latter part of today and the early part of Friday is the earlier victory. Apas, the God of the
Ocean, shows us how to have devotion, how to make sure that our heart is aligned with love and
deeper purposes. This is how our “victory” is begun: it starts with being connected to our heart
with love, purpose, and beauty. Then the later victory of Uttara Ashadha is assured.
Therefore Thursday night and into Friday is a really good time to do your meditations and allow
yourself to start and regenerate a new cycle when the New Moon happens tomorrow. We will be
starting the next lunar cycle in Sagittarius, a cycle of hope and reconnecting to your spiritual
legacy and purpose. Use this time on January 10th and 11th to rededicate yourself to your higher
principles this year.

Friday, January 11, 2013 Sign: Sagittarius (New Moon 2:44 pm EST, 11:44 am PST)
Nakshatra: Purva Ashadha EST until 1:02 pm, PST to 10:02 am, then Uttara Ashadha
for rest of day
Tithi: Pratipada
Day: Venus
Friday’s Nakshatra, Uttara Ashadha, is ruled by the Vishwa Devas. They are the Universal Gods,
who guarantee our victory, based on what has come before in Purva Ashadha. When our heart is
connected with love, we achieve the victory. Therefore, whatever we love produces a result. This
victory comes from Uttara Ashadha. So act through your heart with the best that you have, and
that is what gets produced.
The Vishwa Devas are the Universal Gods of Dharma, Karma, and Karma, meaning
righteousness, action, time, and desire. These are the things which take us forward in life. The aspect to the Moon from Saturn is still there, but it is waning now. We still feel the pressure
of it though, because the Moon is still dark, with the New Moon cycle beginning halfway
through the day.
The New Moon time of Amavasya is only 19 hours. These phases are usually about 24 hours, but
Amavasya is only 19. The calendar date doesn’t always honor the time in the sky, so calculations
get a little “off” sometimes when I try to make the calendar date fit the Cosmic Time as
determined by the Sun, Moon, and Nakshatra. Therefore, by the time we hit noon on Friday, it is
already the 1st Lunar Day, Pratipada. The New Moon takes place over Thursday night and early
Friday.
Pratipada is ruled by Lord Brahma, the Creator, so this is where we create a new cycle. Friday is
ruled by Venus, which is about connecting to beauty and truth in our heart and love.

Saturday, January 12, 2013 Sign: Capricorn
Nakshatra: Shravana from 10:35 am EST, from 7:35 am PST for rest of day
Tithi: Dwitiya
Day: Saturn
On Saturday the Moon moves into Capricorn. For the next couple of days while the Moon is in
Capricorn, we have the capacity to make an internal and emotional commitment to facing life’s
hardships and difficulties. They are not really that hard after we face them, but it is about being
sensible, practical and realistic about our boundaries, as well as the boundaries of others, and
what is reasonable to expect from them.
Saturn, the ruler of both Capricorn and Saturday, gives us that internal awareness of endings and
things changing. We will feel this for the next couple of days, through Sunday.
The Moon is also joined Mars, which is exalted in Capricorn. This Moon-Mars conjunction
makes for some volatility, but also the capacity and desire to really strengthen our emotional
mind. All this weekend, you want to be careful about arguing and getting triggered by any
external forces that you are not in control of.
There is also an important aspect from Jupiter onto the Moon this weekend. Jupiter aspects 9
houses in front of him, and he is aspecting from Taurus. This gives a lot of inspiration and hope
through the process while the Moon is under the influence of Mars and Saturn. Jupiter aids our
capacity to learn the difficult lessons.
Today’s Nakshatra is Shravana, which is ruled by the Moon. This means the Moon is in its own
Nakshatra. Shravana means “hearing,” and its Deity is Lord Vishnu, the provider of the cosmos
who connects all things. This sense of connection to all things, is what we experience in
Shravana -- and the best way to experience it is through Mantra and speech. Everything comes
from Sound. Everything emanates from Sound. Especially when you speak Mantra, you change
your consciousness. This is how we connect our heart to existence and the creative principle.
Take some time on Saturday to speak Mantras, and connect to the heart that way.
It is the 2nd Lunar Day, called Dwitiya. It is about building foundations and structures. This is
important on Saturday, especially because the ruler of the day, Saturn, is the King of boundaries
and structures. Also the Moon is in Saturn’s sign. These three factors -- the Lunar Day, the day
ruler, and the Moon sign ruler, make it greatly auspicious to focus on your own foundations,
structures, and boundaries.

Sign: Capricorn
Nakshatra: Dhanishta from 8:31 am EST, from 5:31 am PST for rest of day
Tithi: Trittiya
Day: Sun
On Sunday, the Moon continues through Capricorn, very close to Exalted Mars. These are good
days for solitude, introspection, and facing our inner fears.
The Nakshatra is Dhanishta, which is a wealth-producing Nakshatra. Dhan means “wealth,” so it
is a good day to assess what is really valuable to you. Wealth is not necessarily about money! it
is value. Its Deity is the Eight Vasus. They are the raw elements though which we create our life.
These raw elements may be things that produce material prosperity, or psychological and
spiritual prosperity, such as great teachings, or gathering other things that enrich our inner lives.
Dhanishta is about manifestation. Its symbol is the drum of Shiva, the Madagam, the drum of
creation.
The aspect from Jupiter on the Moon is still there, but it is waning now. There is still a lot fo
hope and purpose to connect to your teachers on this day.
Sunday is ruled by the Sun, which gives consistent power. It is also Trittiya, the 3rd Lunar Day.
Lord Vishnu is the Deity of the 3rd Lunar Day, so we can connect to his influence. Trittiya has
an energy of precision and trimming, so it is a good day for grooming activities like cutting your
hair, shaving, manicures, etc.
Monday, January 14, 2013 Sign: Aquarius
Nakshatra: Shatabisha from 7:02 am EST, from 4:02 am PST for rest of day
Tithi: Chaturthi
Day: Moon
Big changes today. The Moon goes into Aquarius, ruled by Saturn. The Sun also enters
Capricorn (also ruled by Saturn). This creates the Indian holiday called Makar Sankranti, but this
is actually a mistake, because Makar Sankranti is supposed to be on the winter Solstice. It was
originally celebrated on when the Sun changed direction, which also happened to be the time the
Sun entered Capricorn. So while the Sun does go into Capricorn today, Makar Sankranti really
should be celebrated on the Winter Solstice, as that is what it represents.
This is also the day that the Nodes change signs: the North Node goes into Libra, and the South
Node into Aries. The Moon was in the feminine reflective sign of Capricorn; now it is in the
external masculine sign of Aquarius, the other face of Saturn. We experienced the internal,
psychological nature of Saturn for the last two days. Now the influence of Saturn spreads
_____________________________________________________________________________________________
American Academy of Vedic Art and Science 13
outward into the world, in the form of culture, the sciences, altruistic pursuits, and things that
outlive our own lifetimes.
The nature of Saturn is to look at things for a long period of time. Aquarius is very aware of
large cycles, large concepts that are bigger than just our personal life, our personal power or
strength. This is an important principle today and on Tuesday as the Moon continues through
Aquarius.
Today’s Nakshatra is Shatabisha, which literally means “100 Physicians” or “100 Medicines.” Its
Deity is Varuna, who is the God of the Sky and the atmospheric rain that comes down from
Heaven, creating an environment for lightning and electrical charges in the atmosphere.
Shatabisha will be impressing upon our mind and consciousness. As its name indicates, it is very
good for healing, especially metaphysical healing where we sense the hidden power behind
energy.
Rahu is its ruler, which is is about sensing the hidden power beneath matter, beneath the
structures of the world. Therefore, a deep principle of Shatabisha, the 100 Physicians, is
transforming the poison into the elixir, into great medicine. It is a good day to find metaphysical
healing: maybe you have been trying to solve a medical problem with a hidden cause. You may
find the solution on January 14th.
There are no important aspects today or tomorrow while the Moon is in Aquarius. It is the 4th
Lunar Day, called Chaturthi. The Deities of this day are Ganesha and Lord Yama. They have to
do with overcoming obstacles, and dealing with the consequences of our actions.
Monday is ruled by the Moon; the emotionalism of the day may not be very balanced. Be aware
that you might feel more emotional than usual today.
Tuesday, January 15, 2013 Sign: Aquarius
Nakshatra: Purva Bhadrapada from 6:15 am EST, from 3:15 am PST for rest of day
Tithi: Panchami
Day: Mars
On Tuesday, January 15, Mercury moves into Capricorn, and the Moon goes into Purva
Bhadrapada Nakshatra. This is the part of Aquarius that is very inspired to make a difference and
to serve. The name literally means “early auspicious foot” or “early auspicious result.” It is ruled
by Jupiter, and has that inspired purpose of gaining a glimpse of our true nature, a glimpse that
inspires us to greater depth.
Where Shatabisha is the atmosphere charged with electricity, Purva Bhadrapada is the actual
lightning strike. The lightning comes down from heaven and strikes our experience. This is
where we get an experience of heaven in our consciousness.

Its Deity is Aja Eka Pada, which means “one-footed goat;” he is related to lightning. he is also
like a unicorn -- this section of the sky is near Pegasus. This is the section of the sky that has a
lot of inspiration toward God and our higher potential.
Again, there are no important aspects on the Moon today. It is the 5th Lunar Day, called
Panchami, which has to do with healing. It is ruled by the Moon, so it is good for spiritual
healing. But it is also a good day to start a new regimen with medicines, or other kinds of healing
work (including metaphysical). Or you could use today’s energies for taking care of others, or
caring for animals, or for general creativity.
Tuesday is ruled by Mars, so today can have a quality of aggression and assertiveness. You want
to channel that toward something important. Mars is exalted now, Capricorn and in Shravana
Nakshatra, so this could add a lot of focused discipline on Tuesday.
Wednesday, January 16, 2013 Sign: Pisces
Nakshatra: Uttara Bhadrapada from 6:17 am EST, from 3:17 am PST for rest of day
Tithi: Shashthi
Day: Mercury
Wednesday, the Moon goes into Pisces, ruled by Jupiter. Sagittarius is also ruled by Jupiter, but
it is more religious and externally-directed, more about justice and law, where we actively pursue
the things that matter to Jupiter. Pisces shows Jupiter’s more internal, reflective, mystical side. It
is where we sense our one-ness with everything, feel a metaphysical connection to the Cosmos,
and believe that all religions are beneficial in some way.
Today’s Nakshatra, Uttara Bhadrapada, is the part of Pisces that is about a deeper service and a
deeper commitment to that metaphysical truth. The previous Nakshatra, Purva Bhadrapada, is
where we had that glimpse of our divine nature, as symbolized by a lightning strike that comes
down from heaven and hits the Earth, hits our experience in our heart. But it is easy to mistake
that glimpse for self-realization. It is not -- it is just a glimpse of our nature. Uttara Bhadrapada is
where we make a commitment to go deeper into that, and not only be inspired in the moment, but
inspired for the long-term: we embark on a course of depth and commitment to the source of that
lightning strike.
Uttara Bhadrapada is ruled by a Deity called Ahir Bhudnya. he is a celestial serpent, who goes
deep into our true, hidden nature. He goes down to the core of our being to find and excavate the
truth of our deeper self. This Nakshatra’s planetary ruler is Saturn, which further strengthens that
committed course.
There are no important aspects landing on the Moon as she goes through Pisces. It is the 6th
Lunar Day, called Shashthi. This is about victories, celebrations, and competition. Here, we are

courageous, prevailing over adversity and then celebrating the victory. Its Deity is Lord
Subramana, the youngest son of Lord Shiva, who brings a lot of Mars-like energy. Therefore this
day could have a lot of enthusiasm and passion.
Wednesday is ruled by Mercury, which gives flexibility, intelligence and skill. Therefore, on
Wednesday we are less likely to be stuck in black-and-white, literal ways of thinking. We sense
new possibility and new ways to move through our life. We have a better capacity to understand
our problems and the story of our life.
Thursday, January 17, 2013 Sign: Pisces
Nakshatra: Revati from 7:10 am EST, from 4:10 am PST for rest of day
Tithi: Saptami
Day: Jupiter
On Thursday, January 17, the Moon continues through Pisces. Both the day and the sign are
ruled by Jupiter, so the Jupiter energy is increased. Today’s Nakshatra is Revati, whose Deity is
Pushan. He is like a Divine Shepherd. This is the last Nakshatra in the zodiac, when the soul is
completing its course. Pisces is the last sign, where we are letting go of our fascination with the
world. We are trying to connect with the mystical meaning of all that is beyond our worldly life,
beyond all those things we are striving to accomplish and get tangled up in.
We all want to be libearted from the stress of the world, the stress of life that we experience
through our ego and through other people. We want to connect to that deeper source. This is
what Pisces is about. Once we reach the end of that cycle, and we have made the commitment to
our salvation in Uttara Bhadrapada, the previous Nakshatra, the shepherd Pushan takes the soul
home in Revati Nakshatra.
This is the most gentle of all the Nakshatras, probably because it is utterly selfless. It is just in
service of the soul’s journey. It is related to animals, and daring for the underprivileged and those
who can’t take care of themselves. Utter selflessness is seen here. It is very service-oriented, very
emotional. Its planetary ruler is Mercury, which in some ways is the most gentle of all the
planets, the most adaptable and accommodating.
Again there are no important aspects on the Moon today. t is the 7th Lunar Day, called Saptimi.
Its Deity is Lord Indra, who also has a strong Jupiter quality. Jupiter rules Thursday and Pisces,
and Lord Indra is related to Jupiter. All this Jupiter energy should be very inspiring and
motivating toward higher purposes. Allow the gentle Deity of Pushan, the ruler of Revati, to
guide you to a deeper purpose today.

Nakshatra: Ashwini from 8:35 am EST, from 5:35 am PST for rest of day

American Academy of Vedic Art and Science

Tithi: Ashtami
Day: Venus
On January 18th, the Moon goes into Aries, and starts a new cycle. The soul is starting a new
course through the first sign of the zodiac. Aries is ruled by Mars. It shows the masculine, fiery
nature of Mars which connects us to passion, enthusiasm, and discipline. It gives us the capacity
to choose what we know is right, not necessarily what is easy.
The first Nakshatra is called Ashwini, symbolized by two horses running in different directions.
Our challenge is to get those horses running in the same direction, otherwise we dissipate our
energy. This section of Aries is at the very beginning of the zodiac. It’s full of enthusiasm and
passion. Ashwini is a very mystical Nakshatra, related to spiritual and metaphysical healing -- it
is called “the physicians of the Gods.” Its energetic medicine runs deeper than the surface.
The Moon is now joined Ketu, the South Node, and aspected by Saturn in the opposite sign of
Libra. The Nodes have just moved into the Libra-Aries axis. The Moon joined Ketu can make us
quite critical of our own emotional state, which can then spill-over into the emotions of others.
You will want to be aware of your tendency to do this, today.
Saturn’s aspect on the Moon also brings some emotional pressure and stress. Mars is aspecting
the Moon as well (he aspects 4 houses in front of him), although we will feel that more tomorrow
as the aspect gets closer.
This is the 8th Lunar Day, called Ashtami. The Deities of the 8th Lunar Day are the Eight Vasus.
These are the raw elements of life, out of which we create existence and our world. Therefore,
you want to create things that are meaningful. As the Moon goes through Aries, we can be very
creative in bringing out our true self and true identity.
Friday is ruled by Venus, so enjoyment and pleasure are the underlying energies of the day.
Fridays are usually good for being with people, even for going on dates. But be careful, because
with the Moon joined Ketu in a sign ruled by Mars, you may be more critical and impatient than
you would like.
Saturday, January 19, 2013 Sign: Aries (First Quarter Moon)
Nakshatra: Bharani from 11:17 am EST, from 8:17 am PST for rest of day
_____________________________________________________________________________________________
American Academy of Vedic Art and Science 17
Tithi: Navami
Day: Saturn
On Saturday, the Moon continues through Aries. It is now in Bharani Nakshatra, ruled by Venus.
Its symbol is the female reproductive system, including the Yoni. It shows how we produce and
give birth to something through our Will. Our self-will and energy penetrates reality and creates
results, and we feel that result in Bharani. This is why it is so important to get the two horses,
from the previous Nakshatra, running in the same direction. Only then is something created and
produced in Bharani.
The Deity of Bharani is Lord Yama, who is the God that takes the soul to its correct place after
death, and also the God of restraint and consequences. These consequences are the results of our
actions, based on what we have put into experience. Therefore, there is a lot of reckoning with
Karma in Bharani. We also may have a tendency to hold others accountable, and be rather
punishing of them. If we are not careful, we will incur a lot of punishment in return.
Be aware of this on Saturday, which is ruled by Saturn. He is aspecting the Moon in Aries from
the opposite sign of Libra, while Mars is also casting a square aspect from Capricorn. We can
feel a lot of heavy Mars and Saturn energy today and into tomorrow.
It is the 9th Lunar Day, called Navami. It is the “serpent” day, ruled by Sarpa. This is the God
who transforms the poison into the nectar: we have the capacity here to take the poison of our
mind and attachments, and transform them into the nectar of immortality.
This could be a pretty tangled-up, severe and punishing day, with the Moon in Aries joined Ketu,
aspected by Mars and Saturn on Saturn’s day, and under Bharani’s influence of restraint and
consequences.
Sunday, January 20, 2013 Sign: Aries (Taurus after 9 pm EST, 6 pm PST)
Nakshatra: Bharani to 2:10 pm EST, to 11:10 am PST, then Krittika for rest of day
Tithi: Dashami
Day: Sun
On January 20th, the Nakshatras change halfway through the day, then the Moon changes signs
early in the evening. While the Moon is in either Nakshatra of Bharani or Krittika -- but before
entering Taurus later in the day -- she will still be close to the South Node and aspected by Mars.
Therefore some of yesterday’s severity continues into today.
The Deity of Krittika Nakshatra is Agni, the God of Fire. Our Mind, which is the Moon,
develops a lot of psychological attachment. Krittika is where we cut through all of that
attachment, using Fire. Cutting-through is what Krittika is all about. It means “cutter,” and is the
same root word. With Mars aspecting directly on the Moon (and Mars rules knives), you might

find yourself wanting to cut things out, or cut people out. Be careful of this, with the Mars-Saturn
aspects continuing through most of today.
Once the Moon moves into Taurus tonight, it is in its sign of Exaltation, where you will feel a lot
more confidence and integrity in your heart.
It is the 10th Lunar Day, called Dashami, which is ruled by the Sun. Its Deity is Dharma, which
is truth and righteousness. As Sunday is also ruled by the Sun, we will want to pursue a righteous
purpose today. Just be careful to not over-play the feeling of being righteous in your own mind.
Monday, January 21, 2013 Sign: Taurus
Nakshatra: Krittika until 5:18 pm EST, 2:18 pm PST, then Rohini for rest of day
Tithi: Ekadashi
Day: Moon
The Moon will change to Rohini later in the day, but it is still mainly in Krittika. The Moon will
be in Taurus for the next couple of days, where it is Exalted. Taurus is ruled by Venus, a Fixed
Earth sign. Its themes are contentment, peace, and happiness. It shows our capacity to enjoy the
things we already have, where we don’t need to restlessly look for something outside of
ourselves in order to feel connected or happy. When we do feel we have to look outside of
ourselves for satisfaction (as in Scorpio), that process debilitates the Moon and makes us feel
emotionally unsettled.
The Moon is settled in Taurus, and exalted in Krittika Nakshatra. This is quite important on
Monday, which is also ruled by the Moon. As I discussed the day before, Krittika is ruled by the
God Agni, the secret fire that burns through the impurities that are gathered by the Moon in our
heart and emotional state. The Moon is our sense of pure feeling. we need to connect with that,
directly within ourselves, instead of looking outside of ourselves and generating a lot of unsettled
emotion. When we can eliminate that process and cut painful attachments, you can see why the
Moon is exalted in Krittika.
This happens in Taurus, where we can settle and appreciate what we have. The Moon has also
joined Jupiter in Taurus today, which brings a high capacity for learning, teaching, and
connecting with our teachers. This is also important on Monday which is ruled by the Moon,
giving an emotional quality to the day.
It is the 11th Lunar Day, called Ekadashi. Its Deity is called Rudra. Rudra is the earlier form of
Lord Shiva, the destroyer and transformer of life. This is a day where we can transform our
attachments, so we can connect with something deeper and more eternal than just the world of
forms and desires. It is also a good day to worship Lord Vishnu, who is related to Krishna, in the

form of fasting and sacrificing our pleasure and happiness in the moment for something more
eternal.
Tuesday, January 22, 2013 Sign: Taurus
Nakshatra: Rohini until 8:28 pm EST, 5:28 pm PST, then Mrigashira for rest of day
Tithi: Ekadashi
Day: Mars
On Tuesday, January 22, the Moon is still in Taurus, which is very much about manifestation,
appreciation, and beauty, as I stated for yesterday.
Today’s Nakshatra is Rohini. The Nakshatras are considered to be the “wives” of the Moon, and
Rohini is said to be the most beautiful, the most pleasing and the most content. The Creator
created the Universe in this Nakshatra. The Deity is Prajapati, better known as Lord Brahma.
Here we can be very creative: in Rohini we create our life and the world of forms around us.
Lord Brahma or Prajapati created the Universe through his daughter Rohini. He wanted to create
the most beautiful of creatures, so he fornicated with his daughter Rohini. But it wasn’t an act of
lustful procreation; he wanted to populate the Universe with beings of Form, so he chose the
most beautiful of his daughters.
The energetic principle here is how the One God consciousness in us, became Many. We tend to
confuse existence with the many forms, many desires in us, as we try to find ourselves. But
everything that Lord Brahma created is a part of him.
Jupiter is still joined the Moon, so the expansive and philosophical nature continues from
yesterday. The Lunar Phase is still Ekadashi, the 11th Lunar Day. The Lunar Phases are
changing around the middle of the day, so it will be a good time to have a fast from the 21st into
the 22nd -- maybe skip dinner and skip breakfast the next day. This is a kind of Yogi fast where
you can actually go 24 hours without food so your body can cleanse itself, yet you have still
eaten each day. This is a good thing to do, when Ekadashi is prominent on both days.
As Tuesday is ruled by Mars, a planet of discipline and sacrifice, it is congruent with the 11th
Lunar Day. Mars gives us the strength and discipline to sacrifice for our spiritual values and
principles.
Wednesday, January 23, 2013 Sign: Gemini
Nakshatra: Mrigashira until 11:25 pm EST, 8:25 pm PST, then Ardra
Tithi: Dwadashi
Day: Mercury
______________________________________________________________________________
American Academy of Vedic Art and Science

On January 23rd, the Moon is in Mrigashira Nakshatra. In the previous Nakshatra, Prajapati went
to fornicate with his daughter Rohini to create beings of Form. But Rohini didn’t really
understand, so she turned herself into a deer and fled. This is the energy of Mrigashira. It means
“Deer’s Head” and it is ruled by Mars. It straddles Taurus and Gemini.
The Moon moves into Gemini on Wednesday, and Gemini is ruled by Mercury. This is the Air
quality of Mercury which is about intelligence, gathering information very quickly,
communication, and trying to comprehend why we are alive, what are we doing here. Mercury is
curious and active, wanting to understand and communicate.
The Nakshatra of Mrigashira has that quality: like a deer, it is a little bit restless, but also a quite
beautiful, gentle animal. You will notice these qualities on Wednesday. Mrigashira has the
energy of fleeing, maybe fleeing from something that feels like it has a lot of pressure that you
don’t want to endure.
The Deity of Mrigashira is Soma, the God of the Immortal Nectar. He brings a longing for a
higher cause, a higher purpose, symbolized as the Nectar of Immortality. We also have an aspect
from Venus: she is aspecting from Sagittarius, the sign opposite Gemini. We will see a quest for
beauty over the next couple of days, as the Moon moves through Gemini.
It is the 12th Lunar Day, Dwadashi, ruled by the Sun. The Sun’s qualities of consistency, power,
idealism, integrity, and vitality can be important on Wednesday. Mercury is both the ruler of
Wednesday and Gemini, so use that energy to gather information about your world and seek the
highest good, the Immortal Nectar.
Thursday, January 24, 2013 Sign: Gemini
Nakshatra: Ardra all day EST, until 11:02 pm PST, then Punarvasu
Tithi: Trayodashi
Day: Jupiter
On Thursday, the Moon is still in Gemini, but it goes into Ardra Nakshatra. Its Deity is Lord
Rudra, better known as Lord Shiva the Destroyer.
The myth of this Nakshatra is this: All of the other Gods saw how Prajapati tried to mate with his
daughter, and how the daughter turned herself into a deer and tried to flee. So they assembled all
of their powers and weapons, and made one really strong powerful Deity, Rudra. This Deity was
able to overcome Lord Brahma himself. Lord Brahma had turned himself into a stag, a male
deer, so he could chase his daughter and fornicate with her in Mrigashira. Then in Ardra
Nakshatra, Lord Rudra shoots an arrow and kills Prajapati/Brahma.
_____________________________________________________________________________________________
American Academy of Vedic Art and Science 21
This is the energy of Ardra: Lord Shiva as the Lord of the Hunt and lord of animals. He
transforms and asserts righteousness so we can defend our principles -- but just as in this story,
we have to be careful of what we are fighting for. The demigods didn’t understand Lord
Brahma’s motivation. So on January 24th, you want to be careful and get all the information you
can, before you shoot that arrow and destroy something.
The planetary ruler of Ardra is Rahu, the North Node. When residing in Gemini, it is about
transforming energy, and the willingness to change course very quickly once we learn the true
story. The aspect of Venus from Sagittarius is still important today: it shows that our quest, that
which we are hunting and searching for, is something that will give us pleasure, happiness, and
desire.
Venus is also the ruler of the 13th Lunar Day, Trayodashi, whose Deity is Karma Deva, better
known as Cupid in the Western world. Therefore this can be very much a day about relationship,
happiness, romance, and personal pleasure.
Thursday is ruled by Jupiter. It is a good day to study and ponder deeper philosophical
principles. Perhaps today those principles can be about bringing pleasure, and honoring other
people’s ideas first, before we charge in there and start destroying. With all the Venus influences,
there could be some relationship destruction on this day. Therefore, use Thursday’s Jupiter
influence to make sure you are acting in accordance with your principles.
Friday, January 25, 2013 Sign: Gemini
Nakshatra: Punarvasu from 2:02 am EST, all day PST
Tithi: Chaturdashi
Day: Venus
As the Moon continues through Gemini on January 25th, you will see the Venus influence
becoming even more noticeable as the Moon approaches the 26th degree of Gemini, where the
opposition from Venus is exact at 26 degrees Sagittarius.
Today’s Nakshatra is Punarvasu. Its symbol is an arrow shooting upward towing the highest
truth. Its Deity is Aditi, the mother of the 12 Adityas, who has created all the different
incarnations of the Sun to ensure that life sustains on Earth.
Punarvasu’s planetary ruler is Jupiter, who also gives children and creates progeny. This
Nakshatra can bring a combination of hope and disappointment, because this Nakshatra is the
transition from Gemini into Cancer, where the information we gather in Gemini, must become
anchored in the heart in Cancer. The Venus aspect brings a quest for pleasure and beauty to this
process today.
It is the 14th Lunar Day, ruled by the Goddess Kali, who destroys our mental preconceptions.
The Moon is almost Full today, so we could feel very full of our emotional state, very full of

energy to create, based on what we find pleasing and makes us happy. As Friday is Venus’ day,
we are pursuing pleasure, desire and happiness at a very high level today. So make sure it is
worthy of your incarnation, and not just a source of stimulation.
Saturday, January 26, 2013 Sign: Cancer (Full Moon 11:38 pm EST, 8:38 pm PST)
Nakshatra: Pushya from 4:14 am EST, from 1:14 am PST, for rest of day
Tithi: Purmina
Day: Saturn
On January 26, the Moon goes into Cancer and it is in Pushya Nakshatra. The Moon in Cancer
evokes qualities of Divine Motherhood, of sacrificing our happiness for the happiness of those
we love like a mother. A mother is always adjusting to her environment to make sure the
children are taken care of first. This is the kind of sacrifice we are willing to make for the things
and people we love.
There can be some difficulty with this process, however, if we do not honor our own boundaries,
or are not realistic or practical. This is most likely to happen with people who are not our
children, such as romantic partners. When we don’t have good boundaries around these people
and give too much of ourselves away, we can get hurt very easily.
This is the nature of Cancer. Selfless love is its lesson. Anything short of that, can tend to feel
painful. We’ll be feeling that for the next couple of days. Make sure to nurture those that you
love selflessly. This includes your children or your pets. Connect with the highest good within
you, where there is no reciprocation needed. That includes your devotion to God -- or you can
just pour your heart into the highest good.
Pushya Nakshatra is the part of Cancer that is related to the breasts, nurturing, mother’s milk,
and sustenance. Its Deity is Brihaspati, the Priest of the Gods. There is a great story about him,
where he ran off and had an illegitimate child. Even though all the other Gods were trying to
puchish the child, and Brihaspati was justified in not loving the child, he loved the child anyway
because of his gracious nature.
This shows how this part of Cancer will just love selflessly, regardless of how the child got here.
We need to love it anyway -- and not just a child, but anything in our life that we love selflessly.
There will be contradiction, confusion and difficulty at times, but we still need to love selflessly.
There is an aspect from Mercury in the opposite sign of Capricorn. This gives intelligence,
discrimination, and the need to understand what is happening. The Sun is also very influential
today, as it is Purmina, the Full Moon. So you want to be intelligent and try to illuminate your
mind and heart today. The Full Moon can set us off a little bit, and make us a little too full of our
emotional state.
_____________________________________________________________________________________________
American Academy of Vedic Art and Science 23
Saturn is also aspecting the Moon from 10 houses away in Libra, and it is Saturn’s day. So we
may feel physiological and emotional pressure on this Full Moon, where we are trying to control
our emotions, rather than let them flow with more ease.
Sunday, January 27, 2013 Sign: Cancer
Nakshatra: Ashlesha from 5:58 am EST, from 2:58 am PST, for rest of day
Tithi: Pratipada
Day: Sun
On Sunday, January 27th, the Moon continues through Cancer in Ashlesha Nakshatra, which is
ruled by Mercury. Ashlesha is the part of Cancer that is worried about losing the things that we
are attached to. Cancer has a quality of psychological attachment, like a mother is attached to her
child. IN Cancer, we feel that need for the mother’s love to overrun the boundaries of the child.
In Ashlesha, there is a lot of tangled energy. It literally means “The Entwiner”, and its symbol is
a serpent that is entwined around something. Pay attention to this on Sunday: Whatever you are
entangled-in, psychologically and emotionally, will become an issue for you. So you want to be
tangled up in truth, rather than in confusion. Ashlesha can have a dangerous quality, because of
this fear that the things we’re so entangled-in, will get taken away from us.
The Saturn aspect on the Moon is still there, 10 houses away, and very close in degrees. Mercury
is also directly opposite the Moon. Both of these planets are neutral; they give us the ability to
not be so attached to our dramas. This is important when the Moon is in Ashlesha. That is why it
is ruled by Mercury: we need to have the discrimination to untangle all of those things that aren’t
true and real.
It is the 1st Lunar Day, called Pratipada, where we start a new cycle. In this case, it is the cycle
of the waning Moon, where we are letting go of what came before. We are actually letting go of
our attachments to the Capricorn cycle, because the Sun is in Capricorn now, a sign that is about
maintaining boundaries. The Moon is opposite Capricorn in Cancer, where we need to connect
with the heart. If our boundaries are too impregnable, we run the risk of cutting ourselves off
from life and other people. So this 1st Lunar Day is where we are feeling our own emotional
state, and trying to be realistic and practical and balance our needs with the needs of others.
Sunday is ruled by the Sun, bringing the quality of illumination, power, and clarity into
existence, so we are not just following other people’s lead.
Monday, January 28, 2013 Sign: Leo
Nakshatra: Magha from 7:16 am EST, from 4:16 am PST, for rest of day
______________________________________________________________________________
American Academy of Vedic Art and Science
24
Tithi: Dwitiya
Day: Moon
On January 28th, the Moon moves into Leo for the next couple of days. Leo is ruled by the Sun,
which brings qualities of vitality, power, and energy into our field of consciousness. Therefore it
is a good time for things that increase our power and stature int he world. Of course, this
translates into things like our career and other situations where we are acting powerfully and
with confidence. If we do not have a lot of confidence naturally, we will notice that as well. This
becomes a big issue when the Moon goes through Leo.
The Nakshatra is Magha, ruled by the Pitris, the Divine Ancestors. Here, we connect with those
forces that are our great teachers and guides. These may take the form of our family in this
lifetime, but they may also be celestial teachers that transcend this lifetime.
Mars is aspecting the Moon closely, from the opposite sign of Aquarius. Mars brings a great
crusading style to Aquarius. We could really be putting out a lot of worldly energy right now, to
do something big in the world. Aquarius is where we connect our individuality with larger
collective goals. With Mars aspecting the Moon in Leo, it is a really good couple of days to take
your individual personal power, and align it with something higher than just your own goals and
values.
It is the 2nd Lunar Day, called Dwitiya. It is about establishing foundations in your practice and
your life. So it is good acquisition of different things, while letting go of (especially during the
waning Moon) some entrenched ideas you may be about security and maintaining your own
personal boundaries. It is good to create a space of devotion now, because we had the Full Moon
in Cancer.
Because the ruler of Monday is the Moon, this could be quite an emotionally sensitive day. That
Mars aspect on the Moon could feel very intense.
Tuesday, January 29, 2013 Sign: Leo
Nakshatra: Purva Phalguni from 8:10 am EST, from 5:10 am PST, for rest of day
Tithi: Trittiya
Day: Mars
On January 29th, the Moon continues through Leo. This is where the King is on the throne, and
may tend to be a bit lazy and self-indulgent. You want to make sure not to just serve your own
desires and principles. The big theme of Leo is to be generous.
_____________________________________________________________________________________________
American Academy of Vedic Art and Science 25
The Moon in the Nakshatra of Purva Phalguni can be a little bit miserly at times, where we just
want to enjoy the spoils of our power, and just indulge. Therefore make sure to be of service, and
to give away the beauty, not just hold it to yourself. Purva Phalguni’s Deity is Bhaga, the God of
Delight. It is where we can really delight in the power we have. It is ruled by Venus, so enjoy
what you have, but also let others enjoy.
Trittya, the 3rd Lunar Day, is upon us. Where Dwitiya, the 2nd Lunar Day, is about establishing
solid foundations, Trittiya is about making adjustments. So notice where you might need to allow
yourself to flow and be flexible, while still maintaining good boundaries. It is a good day for
trimming your hair, beard, or nails. It also has a Lord Vishnu quality, so this day could be quite
creative.
Tuesday is ruled by Mars, and the Mars opposition from Aquarius is still “in play,” but it is
separating now. You still have the need to align your energy and discipline with a high purpose.
It gives you the vitality to connect with larger social themes.
Wednesday, January 30, 2013 Sign: Virgo
Nakshatra: Uttara Phalguni from 8:42 am EST, from 5:42 am PST, for rest of day
Tithi: Chaturthi
Day: Mercury
From the middle of the day on January 30th, and for the next couple of days, the Moon will be in
Virgo. The Nakshatra is Uttara Phalguni, which is ruled by the Moon. The Deity of this
Nakshatra is Aryaman, the God of contracts and official news and business.
Jupiter aspects here from 5 houses away, and we currently have four planets in Earth signs. The
previous time when the Moon went through here in early January, there were more planets in
Fire signs. So this time, there is a much more of an Earth quality to this transit. Aryaman, the
God of contracts, allows us to establish a structure for our life, and make things official. Rather
than just courting our beloved, we “get married” in Uttara Phalguni.
Virgo is the feminine quality of Mercury that will be impressing upon our consciousness for the
next couple of days. This is where we manage and organize our life, and make sure that every
detail is where it belongs, as we are not being excessive. When we communicate, we are
communicating clearly. We are being fair-minded, and we listen to others. We realize that we
can undo the structures in our life very quickly if we are unrealistic or if we are extreme in how
we deal with people or how we understand things. Therefore, that “story in our head” becomes
very important for the next couple of days. Wednesday is also Mercury’s day, so Mercury is
bringing the qualities of flexibility and intelligence.
It is the 4th Lunar Day, called Chaturthi. The Deities of this day are Ganesha and Lord Yama.
They have to do with overcoming obstacles, and dealing with the consequences of our actions.

They allow us to surmount obstacles and flourish in situations so the consequences are not
painful, but positive.
Thursday, January 31, 2013 Sign: Virgo
Nakshatra: Hasta from 8:53 am EST, from 5:53 am PST, for rest of day
(until 8:44 am and 5:44 am, February 1)
Tithi: Panchami
Day: Jupiter
On January 31st, the Moon continues through Virgo, and goes into Hasta Nakshatra. Virgo is the
sign where we are managing all the details,, and Hasta is where we implement those details in a
practical way, and create a structure. Hasta literally means “hand.” Here, we take matters into
our own hands.
The aspect from Jupiter onto the Moon is the same as yesterday, but it is much more direct now,
very philosophical and growth-oriented. Jupiter is also aspecting Mercury-Sun-Venus in
Capricorn, and Thursday is ruled by Jupiter, so today has a lot of Jupiter energy. This makes it a
very important day for really connecting what you want to manifest (Hasta) with your higher
principles (Jupiter). As he is also the ruler of Thursday, he is poised to give you a lot of grace in
that area today.
It would be great to say the Gayatri Mantra today, as it is a manifestation Mantra related to
Hasta. Mars is also aspecting the Moon from 8 houses away in Aquarius, as he was yeaterday.
He really vitalizes the transit of the Moon through Virgo. He gives a lot of vitality and courage to
your activities on these two days.
It is the 5th Lunar Day, called Panchami, which is about healing, creativity, and medicine, also
personal and emotional growth.
