Message From Our President There is no doubt. We're into January of 2013. No point in attempting to ignore it any longer—Winter is upon us. Time to suck it up and shiver. The excitement of the Christ-mas Season is behind us for another year. Not only that, but for the numerologists amongst us, December 12th (12/12/12) is but a faded memory. They will have to wait 98 years for a similar (01,01,01) “Lucky Day”. This certainly would qualify those waiting as optimists. Note however, I carefully chose not to use the adjective - eternal.

I am not a numerologist! More a traditionalist, but just for fun I checked back to see how my luck was on December 12. I noted that my bridge partner and I had finished last that afternoon. Lucky ??? But upon further reflection, I realized that we both have birth

dates that are multiples of 12, so obviously this caused some cosmic interference and our lucky day was actually one week earlier. Unfortunately we just didn't know it and so didn't enjoy it! I must cease this blather, but I do know that, someone in my household is looking forward to the day after Remembrance Day this year. That would be 11/12/13 – mark your calendars!

As I indicated I, like most of you, am a traditionalist and thus enjoyed and perhaps overdid the Christmas Season – decorating, shopping, celebrating and feasting. We traditionalists are quite content in January to enjoy a few long naps and summon our resolve to face the oncoming New Year. I am sure you saw it coming, my segway into this month's message - New Year's Resolutions. As a traditionalist I spend a little time in early January and make a few

resolutions. The bottom line of a resolution is to improve yourself in some way. I am very careful not to write any of them down. I do not want to appear overly committed. But I try very hard, next January, to remember them.

A good resolution requires desire, need, support, com-mitment and something else. Here is an example. Nancy and I had a great time at the Centre's Christmas dinner and dance. We met many friends and neighbors there, had a great meal, sang carols led by the choir and danced to the Four D's. As I was helping my dance part-ner limp off the dance floor, she coyly suggested that perhaps we should think about taking dancing lessons. Now this would seem to be gold as far as resolution material goes. It would go something like this :

I resolve to take dancing lessons with my wife in 2013.

Remember this is only an example and not a commit-ment. That said, it is something that I need to improve. I would like to be a better dancer. It is something that my wife would support. I am sure that some of our friends might even help with the lessons. Cost effectiveness is never a bad thing. The end result would be that we could enjoy dancing more. But that last point is the deal breaker. You can have the need, the desire, and the means – but if you don't enjoy the process – your reso-lution is probably doomed. So make a resolution about someone, something, or somewhere. How it, or they, could enhance our enjoyment in 2013. You might even want to jot it down on calendar. Otherwise the numbers may just not add up!

Happy New Year and Come and Enjoy It at the New Horizons Center.

If you’ve ever considered joining a 55+ Centre we

would like to invite you to stop by the Office at Gimli

New Horizons 55+ Activity Centre and pick up a

“Thinking of Joining Brochure”. Our Friendly staff

would be delighted to answer any questions you may

have about joining a 55+ Centre. There are plenty of

things to do here whether you’re a card player or a

floor curler, or anything in between. We have activities

to suit many tastes. What a great way to start off the

new year!

BRIDGE NEWS Roman Puzant

Happy New Year Everybody! It's 2013. The Mayan calendar ended last year, so we are in uncharted times. It's my theory that a Ma-yan version of Stephen Harper came into power in Macchu Picchu a couple of millennia ago and cut funding to all scientific research and development. Bridge operations are doing well on both fronts, Contract and Duplicate. Sharon Peichl continues her invaluable work with beginners and Paul Kem-pling is introducing the intermediate crowd to more advanced and sophisticated systems. Attendance has been steady but could always improve, so come on down. Beginners Bridge Sharon Peichl (204-642-4492) is conducting begin-ners' lessons Fridays at 11:00a.m. New members welcome: call Sharon to arrange. Contract Bridge Contract Bridge sessions are held every Friday at 1:00p.m. New players are most welcome. Duplicate Bridge Weekly Duplicate sessions are held Wednesdays at 1:30p.m. through the winter months. Paul Kempling (204-378-2444) will resume his ad-vanced lessons (Mondays at 2:30p.m.) January 14th and continue into February. Things overheard at the Bridge Club - If you have a bad partner, you'd better get a good hand. - There are only two valid reasons not to return your partner's suit. 1.) you have none. 2.) you're dead - what's the difference between a psycho and a Bridge partner? You can reason with a psycho.

FABRIC ARTS

The Office

The Fabric Arts Group would like to thank all the mem-

bers and friends who supported our Coffee Party and

Craft Sale. We enjoyed hosting (and participating in)

many visits over coffee and delightful snacks, and we

turned over $721.95 to the Club. As well as crafts for

sale, donated by our members and friends, we displayed

the quilts made in the past year. Some of our quilts will

be donated locally. However, there are still some lovely

quilts available for sale 12 months of the year. They are

all tagged with sizes and prices; and Jonie can show

them.

The Fabric Arts Group will resume on Tuesday, Janu-

ary 8th, from 10:00 to 2:00. Fabric Arts hobbyists are

welcome to drop in for a morning of companionship and

sharing ideas. Bring a lunch, if you wish, and join us

from 10 to 2, or come for an hour and a cup of cof-

fee. For those who would like to start quilting, we can

help to get you started. We have a stash of donated fab-

rics which we turn into useful items or warm covers for

sale or donation, but we also bring our own projects to

work on. And, we have members who knit and do other

crafts as well.

KITCHEN NEWS Sharon Peichl

Happy New Year Everyone!! The Friday lunch teams are very happy with the new floor and cup-boards in the kitchen. The schedule for teams for the rest of the lunch season is made and menus are being devised. Attention will be made to those on diets in the new year – or not! Please note that planning quantities for unknown numbers of cus-tomers is not an exact science – it's guesswork. Many thanks to Lil Page's whole team for taking on two lunches in a row, both with 70+ being served and during the time of other busy Christmas prepa-rations. Two good meals and much appreciated by all!

made the ride seem shorter than it actually was.

Brenda and Bruce are excellent hosts. On the return

trip the bus broke down coming to pick us up but

thanks to Andy he arranged for another bus to bring us

home almost on schedule.

Our next bus tour is to Shooting Star Casino January

23-24-25, 2013. As I write this 46 seats are booked

so if you are interested please get your name into the

office to reserve a seat. All seats must be paid by Janu-

ary 14th 2013.

SOCIAL COMMITTEE Lynne Magnusson

Mark your calendars for our St. Patrick’s Day party on March 16, 2013. Be kind to your leprechauns. Water your

shamrocks. Get out your shillelaghs. It is going to be a great day for the Irish (and those who want to be!)

The Christmas Dinner and Dance

was a huge success. Tickets sold out well in advance of December 8th.

We set up round tables with a poinsettia in the centre of each table. One person at each table was awarded the poinsettia as a door prize. Congratu-lations to the 17 winners! Mad Dash Catering pro-vided an excellent traditional turkey dinner with all of the trimmings. Our very own New Horizons Choir, complete with piano and violin, did a great job on Christmas carols and music. After caroling, every-one danced to the tunes of the popular 4 D’s.

Norm Freund was the lucky winner at both events - he won the liquor gift card at Christmas and was the winner of the Brennivins gift certificate at New Year’s!

Our main bartender for both events was Peter Mag-nusson. Boy, can he pour a good beer! Thank you to Vivian and Walter Boyko on New Year’s, and Les Einarson at Christmas who provided relief bartending.

Both the Christmas Dance and the New Year’s Dance would not have been such a huge success without the hard work of your Social Committee: Marg Freund and her husband, Norm; Doreen Braun and her husband, George; Anni Hahlweg and her

friend Roger; and Doris Gordon. Norm, George, and Roger went above and be-yond! Also, thanks to Ken Hildebrand for dropping by on both New Year’s Day and December 9th to help tear down! Every-one worked very hard, especially as both events fell within a three week period!

Funny Hats and Dancing were order of the day.

dancing skills, no doubt learned at the

55+ Centre...

Happy New Year!! Wasn’t that a Party! The hall was decorated in black, white and silver. It was inti-mately set up using round tables. Marg Freund created magnificent centerpieces for each table. As usual the Chinese food was great, with cheesecake and dainties for dessert. Prairie Crocus provided a lovely blend of old time dance and current swing. The dance floor was always crowded. There were four dance prizes given out for spot and elimination dances. We had three door prizes. First prize was a gift certificate from Whitecaps Restaurant. Second prize was a gift certificate from Brennivins Pizza and third prize was a luncheon tea set and crystal candle holder.

We know that a number of regulars have taken to "Snowbirding" for a few months. We wish them well on their winter break. We, however, do not envy them because we will be having so much fun curling two games every Thursday morning from 10:00 A.M. until 12 Noon with our re-start on January 10th. This is a great op-portunity for those who have not had a chance to join us on Thursday mornings to come out and get in on the action. We set up the teams each Thursday morning prior to starting. The fun part is that you will be on a different team each week and have an opportunity to mix with a new group of players each week. If you have never played floor curling, this is the perfect place to start as this is all non-competitive. Again, we would like to thank Jim Craig #1 who faithfully shows up early every Thursday to help set up. We are so grateful to him for his dedication

and commitment.

We would also like to take this opportunity to wish each and every member of the Gimli New Horizons 55+ Centre, their families and friends the warmest of Christmas Greetings and the hope that 2013 brings and abundance of good

health and prosperity to all.

FIT N’ FUN

Marilyn Campbell

Everyone is welcome to join our

exercise and fitness classes on Mon-

day, Wednesday and Saturday from 9:30 am.

to 11:00 am. Exercise helps to tone the mus-

cles of your body and keeps the joints in good

working order. It conditions the heart and lungs

and helps fight the signs of aging. It also speeds

up the metabolism. Exercise is the recognized

way to help prevent osteoporo-

sis. All sessions are based on

low impact aerobics and estab-

lished walking programs. We

also do upper body workouts

that are good for the arms, back

and neck. All participants are encouraged to

gear the exercises to suit their own level of fit-

ness, ability and time duration. We also have

fun doing it so come join us!

Come work off all that extra holiday eating, we start

up again Jan.7th 2013
