C.R.E.E.D. hosted their 2nd
Annual Holiday Social on De-
cember 10th at All Children’s
Education and Conference Cen-
ter. This annual event brings
community agencies, C.R.E.E.D.
and community members to-
gether to celebrate the year’s
accomplishments, plan new
strategies and network. The
event also included member
recognition, of the men who
participate in the “Raising your
Mentality” men’s group. The
highlight of the evening can be
attributed to the children who
attend many of the C.R.E.E.D.
meetings with their parents.
Carole, a longstanding
C.R.E.E.D. member worked with
the children to open the pro-
gram. Their song was set to the
tune of ‘We wish you a Merry
Christmas’, with a twist. They
did an awesome job, sharing
the holiday spirit and reminding
attendees why C.R.E.E.D. works
so diligently throughout the
year.
Lyrics of the song below:
We wish you a Merry Christ-
mas, We wish you a Merry
Christmas, We wish you a Mer-
ry Christmas and a Health-filled
New Year. Good Tidings we
bring to new and old friends,
Good Tidings for communities
where disparities end.

Birth defects are health conditions that are present at birth. They change the shape or
function of one or more parts of the body. They can cause problems in overall health, how
the body develops, or in how the body works. There are thousands of different birth defects.
About 120,000 babies in the United States are born each year with a birth defect. The most
common birth defects are heart defects, cleft lip and cleft palate, down syndrome and spina
bifida. While there’s been lots of research, we still don’t know the causes of some birth de-
fects. If a woman drinks alcohol during pregnancy, her baby may have a birth defect.
Some street drugs and some prescription drugs can cause birth defects too. Also, if a wom-
an gets certain infections during pregnancy, such as cytomegalovirus or a sexually transmit-
ted infection, her baby may develop a birth defect. Some birth defects are caused by genetic
conditions. Genetic conditions are passed from parents to children through genes. The baby
could get something from his mother, his father, or both parents that can cause a birth de-
fect.
Birth defects can cause
disabilities and even death.
Alcohol and drug use can
cause birth defects.
Ask your provider what you can
do to prevent birth defects.

What Is Folic Acid?
Folic acid is a B vitamin. Our bodies use it to make new cells. Everyone needs folic acid, but
it is particularly important for women who can become pregnant! If a woman has enough
folic acid in her body before she is pregnant, it can help prevent some major birth defects of
the baby's brain and spine. These birth defects are called neural tube defects. CDC and the
US Public Health Service urge every woman who could become pregnant to consume 400
micrograms (400 mcg) of folic acid every day.
How can I get enough folic acid?
By taking a multivitamin or a small, single supplement of folic acid daily. Folic acid pills and
most multivitamins sold in the United States have 100% of the daily value of folic acid; check the label to be sure. You have
options! Multivitamins now come in chewable chocolate or fruit flavors, and large oval or smaller round pills. Many stores
offer a single folic acid supplement for just pennies a day. Eating a serving of breakfast cereal every day that has been en-
riched with 100% of the daily value of folic acid. Not every cereal has this amount however. Check the label on the side of
the box, and look for one that has "100%" next to folic acid. (Picture at right)
When should I start taking folic acid?
Neural tube birth defects of the brain and spine happen in the first few weeks of pregnancy, often before a woman finds out
that she is pregnant. All women should get in the habit of taking folic acid daily even when they are not planning to get preg-
nant. For folic acid to help, you need to take it every day - start before you become pregnant and continue taking it during
pregnancy.
