From 2009 to 2014

I joined NJBBA in 1968 when Roland Gilpin and Robert Lick were Presidents. Not long after I

joined I started to get involved with events. My first job for NJBBA was to put a display in the

Philadelphia Sport Show. While at the show we signed up many new members and we con-

tinued to participate in the show for 5 years. When President Nixon declared Hunting and

Fishing day in 1973 to be held in September I suggested that we should do something. With

the help of Bob Lick and Frank Jakob we started Hunting and Fishing day in Brigantine and

later moved to Island Beach, this year was the 40th year. When Bob Lick became President I

was on the first board of directors and stayed on the board for Bob Lick, Bruce Allen and Bill

Anderson. I came back on the board when Bob DeLeonard was president and stayed on for

Reb Gilliland and Eric Paulson. When Eric moved I was elected president. This is my 5th and

final year. I have been on Courtesy Patrol since 1969 also Courtesy Patrol Coordinator.

While I have been president I have attended many meetings with the New Jersey DEP and

local towns to maintain Mobile sport fishing access. I started a beach cleanup at the Forsythe

National Wildlife Refuge in Holgate on Long Beach Island to keep a good relationship be-

tween the Refuge Management and the beach buggy fisherman.

I was instrumental in getting our club mascot, a 1931 Model A . I maintain it and also take it

to shows and events.

The first year the beach buggy started there were approximately 47 members.

They painted their numbers on the bumpers of their “beach buggies”

We now have almost 1400 members and have classy looking NJBBA Plates

New Milestone for New Jersey Beach Buggy

Association

With celebrating our 60th year of service two of our mem-

bers have reached a milestone in their own. Paul Harris

#84, who joined NJBBA in February 1969 and Ron Patten

#88, who joined in 1979 are the first members to have

earned 7 star jackets. They will be awarded their jackets at

the annual banquet on March 8th. Both men have worked

volunteering their time and energy in whatever was needed

to promote the Association’s goal of access for all. Our

congratulations and thanks go to Paul and Ron who have

inspired us all to continue to reach new heights in our com-

mitment to NJBBA

Hi Friends and members, First congratulations to all for having made to year 60.

It has been a long time since I went surf fishing. But as I was reading an article today about surf fishing for “bull reds” on the

Texas coast it brought back memories of doing the very same in the East coast. Except the “red drum” I was chasing were

somewhat larger than the average 29 lb fish found in Texas. And although they do use beach buggies in some areas of their

coast none were pictured in any of the photos I viewed. My buggies started out with a 1964 Jeep Wagoner and ended with a

1989 Chevy suburban. But my favorite was a 1978 Ford extended cab with a cab over camper. Many great trips were spent

in that rig.

In 1978 I was president for one year. A mistake to be sure. I almost lost my job because of the time I spent as a really active

member.

One of the things I remember was to start keeping records. I followed our wonderful president Bob Lick. Unfortunately Bob keep no records. It

was hard to follow up if he wasn’t around to ask. Bill Anderson followed me and I became the membership secretary. And I dreamed up one hell

of a program to get new members. We tried a small experiment with members of the courtesy patrol taking a full package with the license plate,

membership card etc to see if they could sign up new members on the beach. It wasn’t very long before they were available to all of our current

members to sign up new members. The Instant Membership Kit was a doozy. Darn near tripled our membership in three years.

When I was elected the second time in 1982 I had my house in order and knew what to expect. It was much easier but no less time consuming.

This was way before the internet and computers. Think typewriters and carbon paper. Whew! Printed newsletters, which of course required a lot

of time interacting with the printer.

Mike Flint and I invented the point system to reward members for their time spent for volunteering. By the time I had done “my duty” and moved

on I myself had earned a five star plaque and hooded NJBBA sweatshirt in 1988. I still have both. I still have the 2, 3 & 4 star jackets stored in a

box somewhere. You’d be surprised the comments you get down south here about Yankees when you wear them. And also about the Philadel-

phia Eagles when they are beating the Cowboys.

I remember spending a lot of time changing the by-laws and always cringed at the thought of having them discussed and voted at the annual

meetings.

We also expanded the courtesy patrol numbers and covered all beaches. Not just Island Beach, LBI and Brigantine. Which helped us immensely

expanding the membership with the IM Kits.

We expanded the scope of the NJBBA fishing contest to include all of the major beaches instead of just having it at IBSP.

We changed the National Hunting & Fishing Day to include children from other institutions. It turned out the “kids” from Vineland were the rich

family kids. While they certainly deserved to be brought once in a while there were other schools with populations not so lucky.

I remember interacting with the Superintendent of the Forsyth NWA trying to keep Holgate open because of the nesting endangered birds. I re-

member supporting our brother beach buggy organizations in their various beach access fights.

One year Herb Bateman and I put together one hell of a big package of our accomplishments while applying for an award from the National Wild-

life Federation which we did win. I had the plaque on my wall for a few years and passed it along to the Ron Woods. I always wished that the

NJBBA had a place where they could display all the awards and items they have earned over the years.

During the same period Herb (as our treasurer) began to build our legal defense fund. He figured a way to get beyond the thought of rules for a

501 c 3 so that we could have many accounts. His help during the time for me as president was invaluable.

I was the guy who thought up zig-zaging the beach fence to catch more sand. ^^^^ I don’t know if those dunes held up to Sandy but it was inter-

esting to do along with all of those beach cleanups. We sure used up the fence faster. You don’t get all of those points sitting on your ass.

I started the Sustaining membership and I believe my wife Cheryl # 99 was the first to sign up. I also started the recommended and commended

program which I copied from a program like the 800 club had.And I also expanded the board of directors and officers. Which in retrospect made

for really long board meetings. But when you have an organization of our size having their fingers into all kinds of activities you really need active

people to support it all.

I wish perhaps that I kept some records of my time that would have helped me remember more. But some things that I did keep were the buttons,

pins, decals, patches and license plates. During my NJBBA years I belonged to all of the beach buggy associations and UMS. And because of

that I ended up with a bunch of stuff.10 years ago I wrote to the board to see if anyone was trading or selling that kind of items. They said no. It is

hard for me to believe that no one is interested in keeping these items of interest to our sport.

My current beach buggy is a 21’ Hawk bass boat with a 225 HP Mercury Motor. No sand in my shoes. 11 rods on the deck. Never winterize your

boat here. And Cheryl is still my fishing partner.

I really doubt that I’ll be coming to NJ for your celebration unless you can guarantee it will be above 60 degrees. Last but not least I am 60

pounds lighter than my picture, I could grow my hair that long but it sure won’t be that color. LOL

The 20TH Annual Children’s Surf Fishing Tournament

Saturday, September 7, 2013

This year’s tournament provided another milestone in the history of this great organization. We had one of the largest

attended tournaments in a number of years thanks to the great weather Mother Nature gave us. In all, I estimated two hundred

plus participants which included a 110 young anglers, their parents, IBSP Interpretive Center staff, Seaside Park’s Water Rescue

Unit, Jersey Shore Surfcasters fishing club reps, and our own NJBBA members and friends volunteering for numerous duties.

Every youngster received a goody bag full of fishing gear, a tournament t-shirt, bait, lunch, and raffle prize which added

smiles and happy faces throughout the day. Educational portions included knot tying, casting of a 9‘ surf rod, a hands on lure

identification and usage for different species (by JSS), live fish tank species identification lesson (by IBSP staff), a climb aboard

experience on the water rescue boat and jet ski (by SPFD), and viewing of IGFA world record striped bass mount with picture

taking moments.

Despite the fishing gods giving us fewer fish than everyone had hoped for, twenty-six fish were caught and measured

with the biggest fish being an 18” summer flounder. A total of fifteen trophies were awarded for 1st, 2nd, & 3rd places in three age

groups and six Judges Awards.

“Thank You“ to all of our sponsors for their generosity and to the dozens of NJBBA members and friends for volunteering and

support of this tournament. Additionally, special mention to the Jersey Shore Surfcasters, Betty & Nicks B&T, and Grumpy’s

Celebrating 60 years of Service

With 60 years behind us, there is very little that we have not seen. This is a great time to sit back and reflect on the time we have spent together, the accomplishments we have achieved and the happiness we have shared with others. With this being said, I would like to invite our members, their families and friends to the NJBBA 60th Anniversary Banquet and Gift Auction. It will take place on March 8th,2014 at Yesterday's Restaurant in Bayville from 6pm-11pm. The ticket price is $30 per person, and this includes a buffet dinner, unlimited beer, wine and soda, and music for dancing. 22nd Annual Governor’s Surf Fishing Tournament

Sunday, October 6th, 2013 at Island Beach State Park, Seaside Park

Following President Paul Harris’ motto of “Get Involved! Stay Involved!”, we had thirty-one NJBBA members help at this year’s Gov-

ernors Surf Fishing Tournament. The blitz of volunteers calling to cover judge positions and our table’s ongoing power point presentation at the

OBA1 tournament headquarters outnumbered any bluefish and striped bass caught during the tournament! Our having an abundance of willing

volunteers made for a “Judges waiting list” to be written for the first time in a number of years. While we were fully prepared for any type of fish

blitz, sadly, the fish failed to show in any great numbers. Only twenty-one fish were entered in three different categories (kingfish, blackfish, and

bluefish). The “Gov’ Cup” winner was Barry South of Morrisville PA scoring an 18 ½“ bluefish. His fish was actually tied with another blue of the

same size, but, Barry’s catch was entered earlier in the morning which broke the tie and gave him top honors. Twelve other anglers received rod

& reel combos for their prize winning fish in the various species. New Jersey’s DEP Assistant Commissioner Richard Boornazian joined NJBBA

President Paul Harris, NJ State Federation of Sportsmen's Club's Frank Dara, and JCAA’s Mark Taylor in presenting the winner’s awards.

Worth mentioning is Division Fish & Wildlife's Al Ivany has replaced Jim Sciascia as the official scorekeeper of the tournament due to Jim‘s

retirement earlier in the year. So, don’t be surprised if you see Jim as a Judge or even fishing the GSFT in the future!

George was nominated by the NJBBA for his ongoing committed to

the education of our youth. George is also a member of Surf Angling

Clubs for many years. His years of dedication and hard work with

youth up and down the shoreline of NJ is surely an inspiration to us

all.

Fish Pools Update

A total of 33 fish were weighed in according to Bill Mac Intosh, the NJBBA Fish Pool Coordinator.

Winners will be announced and prizes awarded at the NJBBA Annual Banquet on March 8th.

2013 was a great year for the NJBBA surf fishing team. The Spring season started off with a win at the H.W. Shaner tournament. At the Dela-

ware Valley Surf Anglers tournament team member Joe McGowan caught a 371/4 striped bass winning the Mayors Cup trophy for the largest

fish caught in the event and this fish also held for the largest fish caught in ASAC sanctioned tournaments for 2013.Lynda Greaves took 1st

place in ASAC most fish points for women for the year The team held on to first place through the summer. Then at the first event of the Fall

season the team won the SJ Surf Casters tournament. This was followed up by winning two sessions and the event at the Ocean City Fishing

Clubs One Hundred Year Anniversary two day tournament. The team was in and out of first place but by the second to last tournament the

team locked up first place for the year. That made it two years in a row that the NJBBA surf fishing team is the ASAC champions. Only one

other team in the last twenty+ years has won the championship back to back. This is quite an accomplishment and the team really appreciates

the NJBBA members support.

February 8, 2014 will be the date for restocking your fishing inventory. There will be 117 tables, two rooms of new and used fishing equip-

ment, custom plug makers and clothing with a new inventory of striper shirts. With eight foot isles, there is plenty of room to take your time

and see everything the vendors have to offer.

Located at the Toms River Elks Lodge 1875; 600 Washington Street; Toms River, NJ 08753. Very easy to get there, if you are travelling

the Parkway take Exit 82 East, travel 2 miles east on Route 37, turn right on Clifton Ave, four blocks down will be the Elks. Doors will be

open from 8am till 1pm, with plenty of off road parking and only $3.00 admission with kids under 12 FREE. The Elk’s kitchen will be

opened for coffee and breakfast sandwiches.

Happy New Year and thanks to all for the help and Good times we had working together. A year ago October our coast was

devastated by Super Storm Sandy. One of our fine members stepped up and suggested starting a Relief Fund for our mem-

bers in need. They started the fund with a $1000 donation which was quickly matched by our club. Now that started things

rolling! We formed a Disaster Relief Fund Committee to raise more funds and distribute the money. We were able to raise

over $9000! Thank You all that donated. I especially want to thank Jim Hill. Jim was also moved by the storm and formed

the Surf Fisherman For Recovery. He raised money and volunteered his time to help people put their lives back together.

He was generous enough to donate $4500 to the New Jersey Beach Buggy Association's Disaster Relief Fund.

JEFF CAN BE PROUD

During 2014, the year of the 60th Anniversary of New Jersey Beach Buggy Association (NJBBA), it is not only appropriate to

celebrate NJBBA today, but also to celebrate and remember those whose vision and hard work was the foundation of

what we celebrate. Much of what is written here was originally written for our 50th anniversary, but this might be

informative for the many new NJBBA members.

The late Jeff Paul can be given credit for being a principal in the formation of two beach buggy associations. This fine man

of vision, ability, experience and dedication served as the NJBBA’s first President, in 1954. Some years later, after moving to Buxton

NC, Jeff served on the first Board of Directors of the North Carolina Beach Buggy Association. I was not involved in the beginning of

NJBBA; I was in my junior year at Haddonfield Memorial High School. I became a member of NJBBA shortly thereafter, around 1957/58. Most

people involved in the early days of NJBBA would agree Jeff Paul was the principal founder, or "father of NJBBA", and not only the first Presi-

dent. I was only knee high to short hip boots when I first met Jeff. He was president of the Merchantville Fishing Club, and my father would take

me to the meetings. I was proud to be a junior member. I always looked forward to the Club's annual banquets for men and boys only. The

banquet's "no-tie" rule was always violated by a few resulting in scissors removal. I thought this was the funniest thing until one year someone

came with a piece of wire coat hanger inside his tie which resulted in the end of the scissors! I laughed until my sides hurt. Even at my early age

Jeff really made an impression on me, because of his leadership qualities and the very obvious respect he received from the membership of the

Merchantville Club.

During these years Jeff was owner/publisher/editor of the "Community News" of Merchantville. He fished on the Phipps Estate, known today as

Island Beach State Park. His beach buggy was a beautiful Ford Model A Woody station wagon, roll-up side curtains and all. Later, when I had

"Sand Hopper", a Model A two-door beach buggy, Jeff would regularly stop on the beach for a short visit and fishing report. I was impressed that

this "regular" and "pro" was stopping to talk to a kid just out of high school and new to Island Beach.

I believe Jeff’s wife passed away in the late 1950s, and a few years later Jeff sold the newspaper and moved to Buxton, North Carolina, on the

Outer Banks. There he later married Amelia Balance, daughter of the legendary Capt. Balance of Buxton. Capt. Balance held the world record

for red drum for many years.

Ever wonder What Happens with those water jugs sitting on some local bait and tackle shops?

They are collected before the Youth Tournament as well as Take the Vets Fishing event. The money is counted and those

marked for the Vets go back into supporting our Vets fishing and lunch at Stone Harbor.

Those marked for the Youth Fishing Tournament Event. The money goes right back to our area businesses to buy what we

need for the events. So we keep our circle of good will and support going. So the next time you toss your change into one on

those bottles you can feel sure you are helping more that just one cause.

WOW! What a year the New Jersey Beach Buggy website had. I don’t know which one of our member was sits at the computer

constantly clicking on the NJBBA website, but thank you. No, seriously the web site had a record breaking year for us, 2 million

hits. Just goes to show, so many of our members are very interested in keeping informed of the many events throughout the

year. Along with all those hits, we also had 42,800 visitors that viewed over 98,000 pages during 2013. If you constantly check-

ing back, you will always find changing information along with “News Flashes” from organizations like NJOA, JCAA and RFA or-

ganization, it’s there for you to read.

Don’t forget, paying your dues, ordering your banquet tickets and ordering your NJBBA clothing for yourself or a gift. It’s all easily

done with the click of a button and after that, we do all the work for you.

We also have around 850 email addresses that go out in our mass emails. Make sure you keep them addresses up to date with

Membership Secretary Ken Hollins. You don’t want to miss one of your favorite events. If you change your address during the

year email Ken with your new one at bigfishboy50@aol.com. Getting those NJBBA News alerts is a great way to receive remind-

Take the Vets Fishing

June 15th, 2013

Our June Vets fishing event was a beautiful sunny day not just because of the

weather, but the smiles seen on the Vets faces. A couple of crabs, a blowfish and a small shark were caught but by the laugh-

ter and fun you would have thought someone landed Moby Dick. The Vets taking part were presented with honorary certificates

of lifetime membership with the New Jersey Beach Buggy Association. A lunch was given to all with our Chips being donated

by Herr’s Has a Hearth. Our second trip had to be canceled due to the extreme heat we were having.

Thanks were heard all around as the Vet’s Van pulled away waving and still smiling.

41st National Hunting & Fishing Day,,,,,,September 28, 2013

At the Beach Buggy's 41st Annual NH&FD on Saturday 9/28/2013 we had about

50 special needs children and their parents. It was a beautiful sunny September

day to spend on the beach. Even though the kids could not fish, because the

ocean was loaded with a jellyfish like substance called Salp, that clung to their

lines and felt like 8oz. of lead. They still enjoyed the day flying kites, digging whole

and doing what all kids do, just playing in the sand. After, they had lunch, which

was taken care of by the NJBBA Hospitality Committee, of hotdogs, beans, pick-

les, drinks and chips. Then when leaving at the end of the day they each received

a kids fishing tournament shirt along with a NJBBA backpack.
