President’s Corner January 2015 It is my pleasure to report that the St Andrews Social in November and the Christmas Social were both very
successful. We had good numbers at both and a pleasant evening was had by all.
The November dance was hosted by the Thursday night “Beyond Basic” class, with teacher Gordon Robinson
briefing the dances. Attendance was listed at 60 dancers, who kept the hall filled to the limit each dance. Thanks to
Theresa Harbidge, the class representative who helped organize the social, and to her many helpers, who made this
evening such a great success.
The Christmas social was also well attended with over 60 people attending. Quite a few of our newer dancers
came to give it a go, and they did very well. Kudo’s to our basic teachers, Sheila, Joan and Liz, who prepped their
classes so well. And thanks to all our more experienced dancers, who chose to help out the newer members get the
hang of it.
Christmas decorations in the hall were provided by the members of City Light Church and added to the festive
atmosphere, and took some of our work load away.
All classes were involved in bringing goodies and helping with this social, and the old saying,” many hands make
light work”, seemed to hold true. A delicious assortment of food was laid out and enjoyed by all of us. Thanks to
Sheila for her oversight of this area at all our socials.
Joan Axford emceed the evening with Mary Ross providing the most wonderful live music on her accordion,
which livened up our evening. Most of our teachers briefed several dances, which helped our membership to
recognize who the teachers are, and to benefit from their different styles.
Our club ended the year on a high note of solid membership, sound finances, and many new younger dancers
coming in.
As we look forward to another year of dancing, I wish you all of you a happy and healthy 2015.

St Andrew’s Social On November 15th the Beyond Basic Class hosted the annual St. Andrew’s Social. The Obed Hall was
appropriately festooned with blue and white. It was well attended with 60 dancers taking part. Gordon Robinson
once again led us through a series of basic and beyond dances and everyone seemed to be having a very good time.
Many enjoyed the marvelous array of goodies during the dinner break. The 50/50 draw paid $39 to a very lucky
person! The late revelers went out with a BANG! or many bangs as someone introduced the balloons to a tack.
Many thanks to all the volunteers who put up and took down decorations, worked in the kitchen or sold tickets,
and those who took charge of the chairs. Special thanks to Sheila Eaglestone for all the time and effort it takes to put
on a dance, and to Gordon for the many hours getting the music and program arranged. Looking forward to The
Christmas Social.

2015 Workshop and Dance Those of you who participated in the workshop and dance last March will remember what a successful day we
had. The morning and afternoon workshops were enjoyable and informative and the delicious lunch offered a nice
break to relax and chat with other dancers.
We wanted to let you know we have a similar event planned for Saturday March 28th 2015. Same venue and
format (10am for Experienced and 1:30pm for Basic/Intermediate). The guest teacher will be Fiona Miller and the
class musician will be our own Mary Ross. In the evening we will again have The Tartan Players (with four
musicians) but the dancing will start at 7pm. We hope you can mark this date on your calendar and share the news
with your dancing colleagues.
Please check the website for further information and for the registration form. You are reminded that although
tickets are available at the door, $5 per event will be added if you have not paid and preregistered before the March 15
deadline. Many thanks from the committee for adhering to this timeline and we hope to again have an enthusiastic
response for this fun event.

A note from Pat Blair Attention: To my dancers in my class.
Thank you to the Wednesday Class for their most generous gift. I really appreciate your gift and will put it to
good use in my garden. You all deserve a medal for turning up to my class. I will toast to you all over Christmas &
New Year. Have a very merry Christmas and a great New Year and I look forward to our class starting in January,
2015. Regards to all,
Pat
In Memoriam It is with regret that we announce the passing of Margaret Mitchell of Duncan on August 28, aged 99. Margaret and
her husband, Bert, were members of Van Isle in the late 1970’s. They also taught SCD in the Duncan area during
the early 1970’s. Bert will be remembered as the devisor of the strathspey “Staffin Harvest”. Sincere condolences
go to their family.

Youth Weekend West 2015 Youth Weekend West is a fun, annual workshop and dance for young Scottish country dancers aged approximately
16-35. The location moves around western Canada and the US every year, and the upcoming event will be hosted in
Victoria, B.C. on the weekend of May 1-3, 2015! It's being organized by a committee of local dancers and will
include both events for youth and events that dancers of all ages are encouraged to attend.
Below is the tentative schedule for the weekend:
Friday evening:
Ceilidh at the James Bay Athletic Association (JBAA) with music by Mary Ross
Saturday:
Morning: SCD classes taught by VISCDS' own Gordon Robinson and Louise McGillivray
Afternoon:
o electives in other styles of dance
o a ball walkthrough to give dancers a quick refresher on the patterns for the ball dances (open to all
dancers)
Evening: a ball at the White Eagle Polish Hall with music by The Tartan Players (open to all dancers)
Sunday morning:
a workshop class at the JBAA with Gordon and Louise
We're hoping to see lots of local dancers out for the ball on Saturday night to dance the fantastic program that Sarah
Kell is preparing, so please add the dance on May 2nd to your calendars. We'll also be asking for help from the local
group for various tasks (e.g. billeting musicians, setting up and cleaning up) a little closer to the date, so if you're
interested in helping out please let Fiona know.
For more information on the event, please visit the website at www.youthweekendwest.com . Registration is planned
to open in February 2015, and we'll be posting all the details on the website.

Christmas Social Our Christmas Social on Dec. 13th was held at the hall on Obed Ave. which was tastefully decorated for the
festive season. This social was complete with fantastic live music by Mary Ross, a great program of dances from
our teachers, a dining table filled with the finest finger foods and even half time entertainment by a number of
dancers dressed in the wildest of costumes from Joan Axford’s Wed. evening class. Introduced by Sinan Ozel and
led by Joan, these dancers did everything from snippets from A Chorus Line to Shake Your Booty to the Glasgow
Highlanders setting step.
Hopefully this was a wonderful first social experience for the many new members who attended from the basic
classes at Obed and the West Shore. We were delighted to have so many new members join us for this special
evening.
Margaret Chapman was the lucky winner of $42.50 from the 50/50 draw. Congratulations Margaret.
Thank you to the many volunteers such as Jan Beckett for selling the 50/50 tickets, Jane Matthews for taking
admission at the door, Jennifer Harley and Theresa Harbidge and Beth Weston for helping in the kitchen and to all
who bought donations of food, and last but not least, everyone who helped with the clean up.
May I take this opportunity to thank everyone who remembered to bring their own plates, cups, napkins and
cutlery to the social. We strive to keep our socials as environmentally friendly as possible. No styrofoam cups here.
We try to recycle as much of our garbage as we can and use biodegradable products wherever possible. We must
do our part to “Make memories and not garbage.”
I cannot help but think of how lucky we all are to have each other to share such a memorable Christmas event
together.

New Year’s Eve Social Potluck and Dance On a cold crisp December 31st, Vancouver Island Scottish dancers gathered to share a potluck dinner and then
dance the New Year in. The tables gleamed with polished silver, poinsettias, the diners draped fine linen napkins
across their laps, thanks to the Penny Catton. Janet Bailey ably directed the kitchen, while occasionally offering
first aid assistance. A host of volunteers whisked food in and out, so that by 8 pm 5 sets could take the floor.
Many thanks to Dora Dempster for coordinating the event and all the teachers that briefed the dances: Sheila
McCall, Anita Mathur, Penny Catton, Ed Pitkin, Sarah Kell and Edith Chapman. The 50/50 draw of $35.00 was
won by Jim Watson.
Auld Lang Syne was sung at 11:00 to the plaintive strains of the bagpipes, expertly played by Jamie Orr.
We were happy to welcome some complete newcomers to Scottish dancing who dropped by later in the evening.
While the regulars danced Jennifer's Jig, the newcomers danced an impromptu Kingston Flyer.
As midnight approached, many danced enthusiastically on, keen to welcome the New Year, in the best way
possible.

Burns Social – due to unforeseen circumstances, the Elastic Ceilidh Band will not be available to pay at our social.
As we will be dancing to recorded music, the cost of the social will be reduced to $10.00.
The Ages of Dance Have you ever wondered about the dances you do in class or at socials: “how old are they?”, or “where did they
come from?” Many of the dances we do were devised (the usual term for ‘written’, or ‘made up’) in the last seventy
or so years; they are considered to be ‘modern dances’. Other familiar dances have been around for hundreds of
years; they are considered to be ‘traditional dances’. The early books published by the Royal Scottish Country Dance
Society (RSCDS) contained strictly ‘traditional’ dances. The RSCDS often included the name of the publication they
used for reference, and the date, if known, when publishing the dances in these early books. The first ‘modern’ dance
published by the RSCDS was “The Reel of the 51st Division” (Book 13), which was devised in a POW camp during
World War II.
One of the earliest written sources of dances is John Playford’s “The English Dancing Master”, which was
published in 1651, and which, despite its name, contained a number of dances that, nowadays, we refer to as ‘Scottish
Country Dances’. Many dances from various sources are known to both English and Scottish Country dancers.
Playford published several collections of dances. Other publications from the 18th and 19th Centuries include “The
Castle Menzies Manuscript” (1749), “The Blantyre Manuscript” (early 1800’s), and collections by John Walsh (early
to mid-1700’s), David Rutherford (circa 1760) and Button and Whittaker (circa 1812).
The oldest dances in the RSCDS publications include “The Old Way of Killiecrankie” (Leaflet 33), Holman ms,
1710; “Daintie Davie” (Book 11), Walsh, 1718; and “Cold and Raw” (Book 5), J Playford’s ‘The Complete Dancing
Master’, 1718. The dates are taken from the RSCDS publications.
Here is a chart showing the dates for some of the traditional dances that we still do today.

Scottish Country Dance Resources: SCD Videos Looking for You Tube clips of Scottish country dances? There are two websites dedicated to sourcing good
Scottish country dance videos:
The first list forms a part of the Scottish Country Dancing Dictionary.http://www.scottish-country-dancing-
dictionary.com/scottish-dancing-youtube-videos.html Videos in this list are chosen on educational merit although
the quality varies. Multiple versions of the dance are displayed on one page and there is also a link to the written
instructions for the dance.
The second useful You Tube video listing is part of the Scottish Country Dance Database, a comprehensive
resource for Scottish country dancers, teachers and musicians. You’ll find the videos at
http://my.strathspey.org/dd/dancevideo/ . As well as providing an alphabetical listing, it allows you to search by
keyword using the filter box in the upper right hand corner. Each version of the dance is graded by quality of the
video so you can easily pick out the one that most clearly illustrates the dance.
The links to both of these resources are on the Van Isle’s SCD Resources webpage http://viscds.ca/home/scd-
resources/ If you are aware of other dance resources which should be highlighted on our website let us know.

Workshop Classes
Experienced: For experienced and advanced dancers who have a good
knowledge of all common formations and steps and are able to dance those
dances with common formations with just a brief walk-through.
Basic/intermediate: For those who are attending basic or intermediate
weekly classes and are familiar with basic formations and dances.
Musician: Mary Ross Accordionist, Mary Ross, has been involved with music
and dancing since the age of five, starting with highland
dancing for twenty years in Calgary and then moving
on to Scottish Country Dancing in Victoria. Mary has
enjoyed playing for Scottish Country Dances, Ceilidhs
and workshops since 1991. During that time she has
played for TAC Summer School at Shawnigan Lake,
Vancouver Island, and Vancouver BC, Youth
Weekends, SCD workshops, dances and ceilidhs in
Western Canada and USA. Mary is also an accordion
instructor, accompanist for the Victoria Police Chorus
and member of the BC Accordion Orchestra.
Teacher: Fiona Miller Born and raised in Glasgow, Scotland, Fiona
learned to dance almost as soon as she could
walk. Her SCD enthusiast parents were her
first teachers. Fiona trained at Dunfermline
College in Physical Education and Health and
in 1978 she took her dance teachers' certificate
under the watchful eye of Miss Milligan. Fiona
and her husband, David, immigrated to
Lethbridge, Alberta, in 1981. As the founding teacher, Fiona has taught the social
class, seniors, children, technique and the demonstration group for the Lethbridge
Scottish Country Dance Club. Fiona has also taught at the TAC Summer School,
week-long summer camps and weekend workshops throughout North America.
Fiona has tutored and mentored candidates to take their RSCDS Teachers’
Certification. In her other life Fiona has just retired from teaching "English As A
Second Language" (ESL) to Middle-School-aged refugee children. It is Fiona's
philosophy that everyone should have fun dancing, while learning a little bit about
Scottish Culture.
Evening Dance
The Tartan Players, formed in 2005, is a Scottish Dance Band which has
