January 2015 Newsletter
The Fraunhofer FOKUS Competence Center NGNI (Next Generation NetworkInfrastructures) and the associated Chair for Next Generation Networks at TU Berlinsporadically send newsletters with short information about latest activities.
Start of FleMMingo ProjectThe FleMMingo project („Flexibledrahtlose Maschine-zu-MaschineKommunikation im IndustriellenAnwendungszenario“. German for:“Flexible Wireless Machine to MachineCommunication in IndustrialEnvironments”) will start in February 2015and is scheduled for a duration of 2.5
years.
The project is part of the FraunhoferMAVO (“Marktorientierte StrategischeVorlaufforschung”, German for: “MarketOriented Strategic Advanced Research”)Initiative and is considered of top strategicrelevance in the scope of wirelesscommunication for the Industry 4.0. As aMAVO, the project is dedicated toprovide innovations that will be rapidlyand continuously offered to industrialstakeholders, which includes the set-up oftests and demonstrations towardspotential customers in real or close-to-realshop floor settings.
Five Fraunhofer Institutes, namely theESK, FOKUS, HHI, IPA and IIS will jointlyaddress the application of wirelesscommunication technologies in industrialenvironments, including productionscenarios in scope for the Arena2036 andIndustrie 4.0 initiatives. The five Institutesjointly represent a long-standing expertiseand visibility in the fields of industrialapplications, machine-to-machinecommunications, internet technologies, wireless communications, core networktechnologies and scalable test-bed set-upand operations, forming an alliance highlycapable to address the most demandingchallenges.
Fraunhofer FOKUS contribution iscentered around improving state-of-the-art4G and upcoming 5G wireless access andrelated core network technologies tomatch the requirements of industrialapplications in terms of reliability, robustness, flexibility, bandwidth andlatency, ideally being able to augmentor substitute current wireline controlsystems communications (e.g state-of-the-art field bus configurations) with
wirelesssolutions providing competitive resilience.

Watch our very compressed 5Gintroduction videosTrying to summarize 5G technologiesinto 10 minutes, Fraunhofer FOKUShas released a set of 3 short videoswhich present our perspective on the5G requirements, use cases andtechnologies, and how to reachrelevant research results with lowereffort by deploying realistic testbedsbased on comprehensive toolkits suchas Open5GCore and OpenSDNCore:
Part 1: what 5G is – an overview of thehigh level requirements
Part 2: a very short overview of the 5Guse cases and technologies
Part 3: the Fraunhofer FOKUS 5Gtestbed

Project: "SDN at the Edges(SDN@Edges)"The main goal of the EIT ICT projectactivity SDN@Edges is the definition ofan EU Certification Centre for BusinessAcceleration on SDN as well as thedevelopment and experimentalvalidation of new business models in 3use cases (home GW, edge virtualservices and reliability in mobilebackhaul).
The overall goal of the activity is aboutaccelerating the exploitation of SDNand NFV in order to produce businessimpacts (even in the short-mediumterm) at the edge of fixed networks(aggregation, access segments up toend Users premises) and in the accessmobile networks (mobile backhaul andaggregation network).Specifically, the activity will addressthree objectives towards“Softwarization”:i) Defining SDN requirements, validation procedures and bestpractices in order to specify theframework to establish a CertificationCenter for Business Acceleration ofSDN,ii) Deploying field-trials to developand validate three main SDN use-cases (for home GW, for edge virtualservices and for reliability in mobilebackhaul);iii) Defining and testing new businessmodels (e.g. typical of ecosystems)supporting the transition towardsSoftwarization.
