Dear Members,
There is not a lot to report this month. The Board is working on two important items. We are
putting our calendar together for our year beginning April 1. If there is anything you want on
the calendar please let me know. I can tell you that we are finalizing plans for the Key West
trip. It will be the weekend of May 1st. We are also putting together a slate of officers for the
new year. If at all interested I urge you to take the opportunity to serve on the Board.
If you have any fishing or boating items laying around and you want to sell them call
Sherman Nicks. He will have a booth at the Pompano Beach Flea Market, January 23 and
24th.
Hope to see all of you at my house for the Club Super Bowl party. Starts at 6:30 and the
game kicks off at 7:30 February 1. My address is 1226 SE 12th Terrace, Deerfield Beach.

Catching Giant Redfish in Venice LA
I was first introduced to this fishery in 1998, invited by a Texas fishing personality and guided by top Cajun guide
Bobby Dukas on this 2 day trip.
Being a member of LHPSSA since 1992, we’re always looking to take fun trips. In discussing possible trips with our
members, I experienced one of my “ah ha” moments and presented this fishery to the Club with photos. The overall
consensus was “wow”. For this last trip a few weeks ago, we were to fish a day for yellow fin tuna and a day for bull
redfish. Unfortunately, the scheduled offshore day was cancelled due to rough seas of over 30mph.
But this didn’t stop us from going after the bull redfish. Our group of 15 anglers had 5 boats with 2-3 per boat. I part-
nered with Dr. Allen Furia and Brad Rinsem. The morning started slow, fishing next to a rock pile in the mouth of the
Mississippi River but brought us 3 nice reds, 32-35”. Our Capt Ross suggested we move on and took us to a sunken
island in 2 ½ feet of water. We started fishing with gold spoons on a float, casting over the island. From the time we
arrived at the sunken island, we caught and released 18 huge redfish, 34-44”, weighing 18-24 lbs. Our total for the
day: 20 bull redfish. The other boats in our group caught 35 bull reds, and several black drum, trout and flounder.
All in all, a great trip for the group. Our members have enjoyed this Venice trip 5 other times since 2009, filling our
coolers with huge yellow fin tuna, redfish and other species to bring home. Look for information to come by spring as
we plan the “2015 Venice Blast”. Venice – always a good day on the water! Arnie Sedel

Membership Report: Stu Hirsch
I am happy to report that we have had several new applicants proposed for membership. Let me outline what the Board’s current requirements are. Obviously we want an applicant to fill out an application, using the LHPSSA.ORG website is the easiest and best method. It is also necessary for the prospective member to have attended a meeting . This is for them to see who we are before joining. The third requirement is to have an interview with several of the Board members. This is the most important step for several reasons. It al-lows us to weed out applicants who just would not be a good addition to the club. It also allows the member proposing an undesirable applicant to have some deniable plausibility. For example your wife tells your brother-in-law about the club, you can’t stand the guy, however, you do not want to sleep on the couch for-ever. The denial of membership can be made by the Board. We can do so diplomatically, and I am already sleeping on the couch. Our current system seems to work well , however, Board meetings are open to all members and if there is a better idea we would be happy to hear it.
We have had some great new members brought to the club by older members, this is what makes our club great. Please make this new members welcome when they come to meetings.
