Happy New Year everyone! I hope your holidays were

fabulous and you enjoyed good times with family and

friends. I hope you have recuperated from our New Year’s

Eve Party and New Years Day brunch. I am honored and

looking forward to serve as your 2016 Commodore.

The theme for 2016 is going to be “Endless Summer”. We

are fortunate to live in a climate where summer feels like

it is never going to end. We are able to enjoy boating

activities and social time on our deck all year long.

This year, the Commodore’s Ball will be held at the

Marriott Hotel in Dana Point. This is a very nice venue

which makes for a great night of entertainment and

dancing. Lillian and I are looking forward to seeing all of

you join us for a great time.

We will be holding our General Membership Meeting on

Sunday, January 31, 2016 at 11:00am. The Silver Stars

will be serving breakfast from 9:00am to 11:00am with

proceeds going to the Scholarship Fund.

I would like to thank the Juniors for taking on the job of

serving the Marines at our Armed Forces Dinner; they

received many compliments from the Marines and our

members.

VICE COMMODORE’SREPORTBy ED SICARD

Welcome to 2016. Looking forward into the new year we have quite a few open houses planned as well as some special events I am working on. I believe being membership chairman does not just include bringing on new members but bring both new and old members together. I am looking forward to creating some get-to-know your fellow members luncheons as well as open house events. Here is to the new year and what it will bring for the club! Welcome to our new members, who were approved at the December 2015, Board Meeting:Leigh Ann Pack Boat OwnerVincent R. Graves Boat Owner Applicants for Membership who were posted for a 21 day review at the December 2015, Board Meeting:Philippe Lesel & Veronique Lawson Boat Owner(Returning Member)Daniel & Cynthia Guest Non-Boat Owner The By-Laws require that new applicants for membership be posted on the Bulletin Board for thirty (21) days. Any regular member may place an objection against an applicant by submitting the objection in writing to the Board of Directors prior to the next Board Meeting. Dana West Yacht Club operates as a private, non-profit club. In compliance with the California State Liquor Laws, we must have an Officer of the Day at the door, and all guests of DWYC members must be signed in by the member in our registration book before entrance. All visiting yacht club members must present verification, legibly sign our registration book and must wear a guest badge, which can be found in the OD book. The OD must verify individuals, thereby requesting them to please present their card. Most members now have their cards ready as they enter. A DWYC member’s name comes up about every 2 years. Your duty as OD is the only required job you are asked to do for the club. You will be notified by letter as to your date, dress, hours and duties. A follow-up call will be made prior to your assignment. The OD schedule is also posted in the Lines and Bits which can be found online at dwyc.org. Dinner starts at 5PM. If you can’t perform your duty, try to arrange for your own substitute OD. If you are not successful call or e-mail Tracey Imsland at 949-633-7071 or [email protected].

REARCOMMODORE’SREPORTBy GEORGE BLOOMFIELD

Ship Store is Stylin’I am pleased and excited to be reporting to you for the first time as Rear Commodore. I have been learning the ropes for all things Ship Store - Thank you Lillian - and am eager to hear your ideas for new product types, colors, styles and sizes. Before I can place an order though, I’ll need to make room on the racks and in the showcase for new merchandise. So, come in through the month of January to see what we’ll have on SALE that day! If you’ve had your eye on something or didn’t get everything on your Holiday gift list – for a loved one or for yourself, stop by the Ship Store and let’s talk. We may have a few things on sale from time to time throughout the year but, to kick off 2016, for the month of January, special clearance items will be aggressively marked down. I don’t yet know all the inventory but I expect some items will be marked 50% off - or more! Find a sale item you like and, with a purchase of regularly priced items over $100, I may just toss in that special sale item. Please come see me in the Ship Store and look carefully through everything we have. Help me make room for lots of great new goodies. I really want to step it up with some high-quality new DWYC products, and I have already heard from some that I’m on the right track. So, what else is coming soon to a Ship Store near you? If the stars align, you’ll soon be able to shop on line. We have a few hurdles to jump to get there but, when this is setup, we may be offering more than just the usual DWYC merchandise. Stay tuned. Also, if you have a friend who’s thinking about joining DWYC, with their signed Application, I’d like to thank them with a gift from the Store. Maybe a DWYC hat, key fob or T-shirt. Let’s talk before you have them in so I’ll have an idea what we can do to impress them. Maybe you’d like to purchase a little higher priced item like his and hers dress or polo shirts and we’ll have their boat name embroidered on it as a welcome gift from both of us. I’ll post my regular days and hours when we’ll be in. I may also enlist the help of an Islander or two (if they’re

willing) to expand my open times. If there’s something you or a guest just has to have, call me and I’ll do whatever I can to make it happen. You can reach me at 949-922-5627, or email [email protected]. Don’t forget to order that new burgee or to order a new set of towels for your boat! Happy Shopping, and Happy New Year!

FLEET LOGBy JIM MONTRELLA

Life is not about waiting for the storm to pass; it is about dancing on the raindrops.

Here we are in anticipation of a new year of cruising, learning, making new friendships and developing others. My name is Jim Montrella and this will be my wife Bev’s and my second opportunity to be responsible for our DWYC cruises. We will do our best to make this year as memorable as possible with our long weekend escapades as well as any extended cruises. As was done this past year, we expect to have a cruise chairperson for each cruise.

We will have our annual Cruise Meeting on Wednesday, February 3rd at the Club. Please mark your calendars. A casual dinner will be served at 6pm followed with our cruise meeting at 7pm. The schedule for the season will be announced and distributed at that time. We have added Cabrillo Beach Yacht Club, re-added LBYC and possibly

BCYC. We have amended the dates for the extended cruise to San Diego. At this time, we are still awaiting response from several yacht clubs regarding availability and dates; however, the dates have been set for Catalina Isthmus (June 24-26) and Avalon (October 21-23).

As in the past, the Cruise Season will begin on or soon after daylight savings and end with Avalon. We will once again try to coordinate with our “landlubber cruisers” headed up this year by Ed “Santa” Howie.

Looking forward to seeing alot of familiar faces and hopefully several new ones at our meeting on Wednesday, February 3rd. If you’re a new member or new to cruising and don’t understand what this is all about, please feel free to give me a call at 949-212-8811.

JUNIOR’SCORNERBy TED OLSEN

Dana Point Harbor Holiday Parade Since 2011 your DWYC Juniors have created, decorated, and entered a Dana West Yacht Club entry in the Dana Point Harbor Holiday Boat Parade. We had to give up towing the Sabots last year so we came up with the idea of placing a Sabot on the foredeck of “Jackie”--the club launch. In keeping with the opening of the new Star Wars movie, the theme of the 41st Annual Parade was “Galactic Holiday”. Our entry for the this theme was a fun cartoon “Rocket Fish” inserted between the Sabot mast, boom, and leach with a lighted Yoda on the cabin top. We received good news at the awards breakfast on December 20th. Our entry won a first place for “Best Music!” This award is especially impressive considering we didn’t have any amplification or musical accompaniment. Your juniors just sang their hearts out accapella the whole parade route. We have the BEST juniors! Thanks go out to DWYC members: Ray Bell, Steve Catanzaro, Jim Montrella, Roger Salway, Brian Randall and Greg Cox along with DWYS Ken Rightmire for their assistance on and off the water. The juniors on board were: Adam Boyajian, Hailey Balogh, Harrison and Ben Rightmire, Anna and Andrew Schwartz, Peyton Lee, and Oliver Ernest. The boat was lighted each night in the slip by the club, as well as being in the parade all four nights in spite of threatening weather. I hope you got a chance to see it. 19th Annual Armed Forces Dinner Your juniors: Peyton Lee, Micha Pritchard, Lauren Ferrera, Andrew Schwartz, Ashley Ford, and Nate Scott were honored to serve our US Marine guests at the 19th Annual Armed Forces Dinner. Your young people represented you well serving these wonderful young men and women of the Marine Corps. The experience was so valuable for them. They earned some really good tips from the very generous DWYC members in attendance, but the honor of serving

their Marines and learning about them was far and away the most important part of the evening.

I want to thank Commodore Randall and Director Hawkins for including them and each member who so generously tipped them. Junior Storage Up Date We have heard back from the Marina/County concerning the junior on the water storage plan that the Junior Slip Committee put together after many months, and for some of us years, of planning. As a committee, we haven’t been able to examine the response in detail as yet, but initial glances indicate this isn’t going to be a one meeting topic, but a rather complex one and could take a very long time. We need to get this accomplished soon if we are going to able to offer Junior and Senior High School Sailing at DWYC. Collegiate Sailing is the fastest growing segment of youth sailing and our community kids are completely missing out. These programs also bring in needed money to pay for the rest of the junior program to make it better. If you’d like to donate to this very important investment in the future of our youth and our club, please contact me. Remember Dana West Youth Sailing, Inc. is a 501c3 corporation and all your donations are tax deductible. One example is: For every $1.00 you donate it really costs you $.65. Also, if you desire to be anonymous, I assure you I will not share your information. Do it for the kids, do it for the future of the club.

RACEBy ROGER SALWAY

During November, we had one race with some very heavy competition …the Dana Point Commodore Challenge. This is a race hosted by DPYC, whereby challenging other local Yacht Club Commodores to a race. Last year’s 2014 challenge was won by DWYC Commodore Steve White by a mere 1.5 seconds. This year, DPYC was out for revenge to capture the title. DWYC decided to enter Freestyle (Jerry Wetzler’s Cat). The DWYC crew included Commodore Tim Randall, Steve Ernest, Jim Treydte, Mark Williams, Rick McCredie, and Jerry Wetzler. Let’s just say-- the boys had a great time! DWYC took second place! Speaking of good times, Commodore Tim treated DPYC Commodore Gary MacCleverty and his crew of sailors, the Race Committee (Nancy, Pat, Brian, Craig & Roger) and the DWYC crew of Freestyle to some great drinks and snacks after the race. Good luck next year!

Our first major event of 2016 is the SCYC Mid-Winter Regatta held in February throughout Southern CA. DWYC will be sponsoring the non-spin class the weekend of

February 13th & 14th. There will be two races on Saturday and one race Sunday. Watch for more information on our webpage and race board at the club in early January. This year we split the weeks with PHRF racers. DPYC will be hosting the following weekend of February 20th & 21st which will give you the opportunity to participate both weekends. This can free up needed crew in all race classes. Again, more information will be available by mid-January.

Thank you for a fantastic year. We could not have done it without a great Race Committee (Jan Jordan, Nancy May, Santa Ed, Roger Williams, Mike Joyce, Bob Schultz, Ron Hascall, Tom Rafferty, Craig Smith (DPYC), Pat Shoemaker (DPYC) and Chris Jones (dearly missed). Thank you also to all the members who supported the race program by volunteering the use of their boats as a race committee boat. Again, thank you very much for your support in 2015.

See you on the Ocean.

HEALTH & HAPPINESSBy FLORINE ENMEIER & DEBBIE PEAY

Ring out the old and ring in the news!! Wedding bells rang for Earl and Penne Reid who were married last month. We send our congratulations to them!

Long time member and avid boating supporter Jeanette Krembas has passed away. Gene Opittek and Patrick Edgerton are recovering from surgeries. Janice (Frechette) Artinger had arm tendon surgery and is healing well. She and Sam will be taking the helm of Caribe Wind in our harbor in January. That should speed recovery!

If you, as a DWYC member, have something special happening in your life or other information that should be included in this column, please email it to Florine Enmeier at [email protected] (949.492.5857) or Debbie Peay (949.495.2093).

BUSINESSNETWORKGROUPBy GEORGE BLOOMFIELD

BNG IS BACK! February 16, 2015 at 6:30 p.m.

If you’re not yet retired and you’d like to mix a little business development with some collaborative club camaraderie, BRING IT ON! BNG – DWYC’s Business Networking Group, has come up with several new ideas for 2016. Yes, our regular 15 minute Member Spotlight presentations are informative and offer drill-down detail about those member’s businesses, but we’ve significantly expanded our vision and added a healthy dose of FUN!

BNG is kicking off the new year with a Networking Social at 6:00 PM on Monday February 1st. Participants will enjoy free pizza and receive a drink ticket good for one free beer or glass of wine, compliments of BNG. Our new informal “Social Networking” format welcomes BNG’ers to mingle and talk with one another about all things business – or boating or whatever. The idea is to meet fellow DWYC members who still have a business to think about. To get the most from these socials, make it a point to introduce your self to and talk with several different people during the one-hour gatherings. Afterward, reconnect with friends for dinner or grab a drink in the bar.

MARK YOUR CALENDARS NOW! BNG will meet at 6:00 PM on the first Monday of every month. BNG plans to alternate meetings between Networking Socials one month and either one or two Member Spotlight Presentations the next. Members wishing to give a 10 to 15 minute Spotlight presentation should sign up at least 2 to 3 months in advance. You will be asked to provide a 250 to 300 word written outline to briefly describe the highlights of your business and what your presentation will cover. Your description will be featured in Lines&Bits and in our club’s soon to be redesigned email News Blast at least one month prior to your presentation date. Presentation opportunities are limited. Email Tim Randall

at [email protected] or you can call or text Martha Hall at (949)510-6333). If you’d like to present in March or May, it’s important that you signup NOW.

In addition to our regularly scheduled meetings, BNG plans to invite at least 4 local Chambers of Commerce to host their monthly meeting at DWYC once during the year and you’re welcome to join us. These mixers should be well attended so, for maximum space availability, they’ll likely be scheduled on a Tuesday or Wednesday evening. Limited food and bar service is in the works.

What is BNG? BNG provides a welcoming platform for club members who are also business owners or business development professionals. BNG offers the perfect time and place to connect with other business-minded DWYC members, to learn about each other’s products or service, and to seek or share referral opportunities. For more information, please contact George Bloomfield at 949-922-5627 or [email protected].
