Happy New Year to you all as we welcome 2016 and the excitement a New Year brings. I’ve always thought January to be such a refreshing month. For many, January and the New Year give us a fresh start – a reason to reboot, recharge and reinvigorate ourselves. It’s a time to set new goals and find new motivations that can keep us inspired throughout the year. January is also National Mentoring Month, the perfect time to consider becoming a mentor. Research shows that youths who are mentored have higher self-esteem and do better in school, often moving on to higher education. They also have a lower risk of engaging in risky behavior. As a senior, you have experiences, knowledge and skills that are extremely valuable to a young person. By sharing what you’ve learned, you can help your mentee solve problems and accomplish goals. You may even learn something new yourself! The ultimate purpose of mentoring is to provide young people with a trusted adult who cares about them. You can be a safe person with whom a child or teenager can share their concerns as well as new and exciting things in their life. Mentoring is often done through specific community programs, but there’s no reason you can’t find someone to mentor on your own. You are sure to find that mentoring is fun and beneficial for both of you! 5 Things About: January • January is the coldest month in the Northern Hemisphere and the hottest month in the Southern Hemisphere. • Scholars say the name January derives from the Latin word for “door.” • With the exception of leap years, January begins on the same day of the week as October. • The birth flower for the month is the carnation. • The third Monday of January is recognized as Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

January: National BathSafety Month

“A common area where seniorsoften end up having accidents isfalls, in the bathroom, andhelping prevent those kinds ofaccidents is what January’sNational Bath Safety Month isabout.” (1) “Over 75% of slip-falldeaths happen to people who are65 years and above.” (2) A studypoints out that one-third of fallsoccur at home in the bathroom. With the smooth surfaces andmoisture of water, this can equal arisky place for falls. An average of370 people (all age groups) sufferfalls or injuries in the bathtub orshower each day. This is thesecond leading cause of accidentaldeaths or disabilities.

Complications such asmedication side-effects, reducedphysical ability and diminishedvision are contributing factor to

Giving back to those in need isone of the most gratifying feelings, especially when the one in need isan animal. The Circle of Friendsgroup had an incredibly rewardingouting to the Agoura AnimalShelter in December. Theydonated handmade blankets tohelp keep the animals warm andcomfortable in the winter months. They also had the opportunity tointeract with the animals. This wasa gratifying moment sharedbetween the animals, all residentsand staff who attended the outing.Moving forward into the NewYear, we hope to keep this “goodfeeling” going. What a great wayto end 2015 and start 2016.

Happy New Year from the Circleof Friends, we wish everyone ayear of good health andhappiness!
