Dear Bay Window Reader,

The Pickup and Martin families wish all of you a happy, healthy and prosperous New Year. We are very gratefulto our members for your continuing support of the club. We have been touched by your friendship and thekindness and caring you have shown us. It’s hard to believe that three years has passed since we assumedownership of this iconic property. We look forward to an incredible 2016 ahead.

Christmas at the Balboa Bay Club was an amazing time of celebration for members and their families. Pleasejoin me in congratulating Malcolm, Aaron, and Melanie, and their team for providing a month of the best holidayevents on the coast beginning with a tree lighting ceremony breaking all attendance at the Bay Club. The festivitiescontinued through the boat parade week with Christmas parties and Holiday events making the season brightfor everyone.

You may have noticed that remarkable improvements continue to take place at the resort hotel and down theCoast Highway at the Newport Beach Country Club. Our Resort hotel rooms and hallway renovations are almostcomplete and we invite you to take a tour. Up next, the hotel ballroom and pre-function areas are set to beremodeled. Coming in spring of 2016 we expect to debut the beautiful new clubhouse at Newport Beach CountryClub. Dear BBC Members and Guests,

Exhausted, is quite possibly the best word to describe the majority of our team andour Members after the holiday season! What a whirlwind time was had, from the MemberJingle Mix and Mingle, the Kids Christmas Party, five nights of the Boat Parade, the NewYear’s Eve party, and everything in between. Now it’s time for the decorations to comedown and the Club to return to a new year normal.

Thank you to all the team, both front and back of house, that made this holiday seasonso special for so many. Every one of the team plays an intricate role in the success of theClub and everyone has to step up when we are that busy. Aaron and Melanie in theMembers Relations team had once again out done themselves with the event planningdetails. Ian, Monique and Adrian grew the service and really helped bring new life intothe Members Grill. Chef David Fune and Sous Chef Brandon Hobbs have elevated thefood to a level that I know our Members love.

Thank you also to all our Members, for without you, we have nothing. Thecamaraderie, the friendship, the advice, the care you have shown toward the team is trulyappreciated. My hope for each of us this year, is a year full of love, health and happiness.A year where we each improve our relationships, where we give more than we get and ayear which sets is a starting point for even better years to follow.

I thank you for your Membership, and I look forward to seeing you around the Club in2016.

Sincerely,Malcolm SmithGeneral ManagerBalboa Bay Club

January 2016

Dear BBC Members and Guests,

Happy 2016! Just think what we can accomplish during the 365 days that make upthis New Year. This is the time to look ahead, make some changes and maybe a fewresolutions. The start of a New Year is always an exciting time and here at Balboa BayResort we have big plans and lots going on.

As we continue our Guest Room Enhancement Project we are delighted to havePhase I of our new guest rooms completed and receiving accolades from our guests. With Phases II and III being finished during the month of January, we are thrilled at theprospect of all 159 guest rooms being ready with a beautiful new look and luxuryamenities. We invite you to spend the night and experience the difference.

Our final renovation project will take place during the spring/summer, and we areanticipating an incredible new Grand Ballroom and pool area. As we approach the startdate, we will have visual displays to show how the area will look after our talenteddesigner, Kay Lang, has worked her magic. So, after the summer, the entire Resort willbe completely remodeled and refreshed.

Consistent with this outlook, we are delighted to welcome on board new teammembers, Matt Webb, Executive Sous Chef, and Ben Carpenter, A&O Manager. Matt hasgained extensive experience at Four Seasons in Hawaii and Washington D.C., and willfocus on banquets. Ben will be a great addition to the A&O team, bringing mixology andCraft bartending knowledge to enhance the Gastropub experience.

As the football season winds down, with play-offs and the Super Bowl just around thecorner, A&O will continue to screen all the games. Why not come and watch along withfellow fans and even try some of our new menu items?

We have been busy planning all the events for the year ahead. The line-up ofactivities and events can be viewed on our website at www.balboabayresort.com. Thecalendar of upcoming Winemaker Dinners includes some exciting wineries, and we inviteyou to join us for an evening of delectable food and wine pairings at this year’s firstdinner on February 12 with Silver Oak, known for their excellent Napa and AlexanderValley Cabernet Sauvignons.

Wishing you and your families a happy and healthy 2016!

Sincerely,Sam El-Rabaa, C.F.B.E.General ManagerBalboa Bay Resort

BBC FITNESS

Happy New Year! This is the time of year that everyone wants to settheir resolutions or goals for the upcoming year. The majority of the timewhen people set resolutions, they don’t accomplish them. Mostlybecause they set themselves up for failure. They don’t have the correctstructure or process. So how can you set a health and fitness goal thatyou can accomplish? What is the process that leads to success? Hereare my key steps to being successful in your goal setting this year!

Step 1. Be specific. To set a health and fitness goal you need to bespecific. Don’t just say I want to lose weight, instead use, “I want to lose20 pounds.” Don’t say, “I want to run more,” instead use, “I want to runa 10K,” or “I want to run a half marathon.” Maybe you just want to getin better shape or stay healthy, then make a goal to workout 3 days aweek for 45 minutes. Then make another goal half way through the yearto workout 5 days a week for 45 minutes. Our brains don’t process thingsthat are vague, so clearly identify your goals with what, when, and how.

Step 2. Write it down. Something awesome happens when you writedown your goals. Not typing it in your phone or iPad, but physically writingit down on paper. It takes it from your brain and starts the process ofmaking it a reality. Write your goals down and place them somewhereyou can see them every day, so they are consistently present in yourmind. Personally, I like to set my goals by the side of my bed, so when Iwake up in the morning, there they are - my goals! It starts my day withmotivation, focus, and excitement.

Step 3. Accountability. You need accountability to be successful.Unfortunately, we can easily let ourselves off the hook, saying things like:I can miss class today or I will walk tomorrow instead of today. But if youare meeting a friend at a workout class or for a walk you wouldn’t letthem down, because they’re your friend and they’re counting on you, thisis accountability. Someone that can keep you accountable could be anonline group where you have to check in, a friend, a coach, or a teacher.Let this person know your goals and your plan then ask them to help youstay accountable. And even better, if you can, find a friend who is alsosetting health and fitness goals.

Step 4. Diet plan. It is important if you are setting a health and fitnessgoal that there is a diet plan portion. They say that fitness is 80% whatyou eat. Personally I don’t “diet”. I eat healthy because I love it, it makesme feel good. I haven’t always had a healthy diet, but step by step Ichanged my diet and my taste buds. Now I crave healthy options insteadof unhealthy ones. Start by finding a diet structure that works for you.One of my favorites is not eating any carbs after 4pm. Not a huge dietchange but something that will make a big difference. There is so manyoptions and resources to finding a diet plan that works for you anddoesn’t make you hate it. Because if you hate it, you won’t do it. You canalways take it step by step.

Step 5. Set real and tangible goals.Don’t set a goal to lose 100 poundsin one month. First of all, it isn’t safe, and it isn’t tangible. Set a goal tolose 5 pounds in a month, then set another goal to lose another 5pounds the next month. Don’t set a goal that you are setting yourself upfor failure, set one that you know if you work at it, you can do it.

Step 6. Come outside your comfort zone. Yes your goals should betangible, but they should also be outside your comfort zone andchallenge you in a good way. In a way that you say to yourself, “this is socool and it would be amazing if I could do this.” And yes you can!

Step 7. Have a reasonable time frame.Goals should be fast approaching,1 to 3 months. A goal much farther than that seems too out of reach andthe chances of you procrastinating are high. Set a goal in January forFebruary or March. Then in April set another goal for 2-3 months out andso on. Also, it is super important to put an exact date. You must know whatit takes first before you set your time frame. For example, one pound offat is equal to 3500 calories, so if you burn 500calories a day you can lose 1 pound of fat in 7 days.Or if you want to run a marathon and currently youaren’t running more than 5 miles at a time, allowtime to build up to the 26.2 miles.

You are ready! Set your goals and make 2016amazing!

A New Year. A New You.

Happy New Year! I hope that you all had awonderful holiday season, and I wish you all luckwith sticking to those pesky New Year’sresolutions. In 2016, we can expect to elect a newPresident of the United States, we will see theSummer Olympics held in South America for thefirst time ever, and the US Open returns once moreto Oakmont PA, the unquestioned greatest locationpossible for our nation’s golf championship! (Fulldisclosure: I was born and raised in Pittsburgh.)Still, all of those globally-significant headlines

will be relegated to the back pages and squeezedto the sidebars as the biggest world news in 2016will most certainly be the grand opening of thebrand new Newport Beach Country ClubClubhouse! Conjecture abounds regarding exactlywhen we’ll take up residence in our new digs, but Ican confidently say it will most definitely happenthis year! We all know it seemed like “slow going”there for most of the fall, but progress continuesand the work crews should be putting the finishingtouches on the building in the coming weeks andwe hope to be in by April. Regardless of exactlywhen, I can happily report that the building isshaping up beautifully, and I can also confidentlyadd that our owners and the project team havespent countless hours ensuring that every detail, every decision, and every “fork in the road” choicehas been met with the best interests of ourmembers in mind. As they say “Good things cometo those who wait!”Of course we would be remiss if we did not bid a

fond farewell to 2015 and all it brought us. Ourmembers enjoyed the last days of 2015 roundingout their tournament calendar in style. Our LadiesBoard toasted a job well done at their annualluncheon, followed by a very festive and costumedLadies Holiday Staggette. Our men raised a toastat their annual SCPGA Senior/Junior Pro-Am onDecember 9th which traditionally closes out ourtournament season each year and provides justenough friendly competition to get us through theholidays. Thank you to all our members for theirsupport of all the events at Newport Beach CountryClub for the entirety of 2015; we can’t wait to do itall again and better than ever. Cheers, and have a prosperous, healthy and

BBC BOATING

Story and Photos By Sue Edelstein

BBC Boating

BBC Members Kevin and Tara MacKenzie celebrate the new yearwith their three children, Seamus 7, Ryland 5, and Jameson 1 (Irishnames for this clan) and thoroughly enjoy TIME OUT, their Tiara 4000Express. Their slip is located right by the Members’ Pool, so theycan have friends and family share time between the boat and thepool. “TIME OUT is like a retreat,” Tara explained, “not only from ourhome, but it’s a private place to go when it’s real busy at the club.”

The MacKenzies moved to the Newport Heights area four yearsago from Dallas, Texas. Kevin said, “In moving to Newport fromDallas we were committed to making sure we would be in a locationthat allowed us to take advantage of the water, and the BBC andboat have really helped with that.” His original intent was to get a30 footer, but when he saw the advertisement in the Bay WindowMagazine offering a yacht partnership with three others at the clubhe already belonged to, opportunity knocked and decisions weremade to be a part of this 40 foot beauty! With no real boatingexperience in his past, Kevin has learned to operate it from othercaptains who pilot the boat. TIME OUT was originally named by aprevious owner who had several kids who would be placed in “timeout,” for various misdeeds. Kevin and Tara could relate to that, butalso see a dual meaning in taking time out from work and their fullschedules!

Kevin’s business is in the commercial real estate industry wherehe is the co-head of the west coast for HFF. He enjoys exercising, playing basketball, fishing, skiing, and watching football, but hismain hobbies tend to now revolve around his kids’ sportingactivities. The boys are involved with football, baseball, and soccer

which Dad coaches. They are all Dallas Cowboy and NebraskaCornhusker (Tara’s alma mater) fans. He and Tara exercise at theBBC Fitness Center and take advantage of the Child Care here. They appreciate all the friendly staff, especially the valet for helpingthem unload the kids. The family goes to St. Andrews Church andparticipates in various events. They love their Newport Heightsneighborhood and the BBC has become a common connectingplace as they meet more young families living close by.

Tara is a pediatric occupational therapist, working out of her home. Her business is called Learning in Motion([email protected]) and she treats children (frombabies to 10 year olds) with motor delays (coordination), attentionchallenges, and sensory issues. She helps them function in theirenvironment, whether it be at school or play and aids them withsocial friendships. Kevin joyfully states, “It has been nice to seeTara recently go back to a career she has such passion for, whichhas real societal impact by helping the lives of families.”

A memorable occasion on TIME OUT was when they took friendsfrom Chicago and San Diego to Emerald Bay and anchored there.Paddle boarding, swimming, and jumping off the boat with the kidsfilled up their delightful day. Their boys have fun when the familyanchors overnight in the turning basin in Newport Harbor, as it is likecamping out. Seamus was thrilled last year when he caught hisfirst ocean fish, a stingray, on one of these trips. Kevin is happyabout the move and Tara added, “It’s really a unique experience toshow people Newport Beach from the water.” Time in TIME OUT isdefinitely a pleasure!

For the perfect Thursday Night Football or Sunday Night Football or the most gloriousSunday in February, Super Bowl Sunday, plan on serving football-watching snacksduring all four quarters and serve the main dish at halftime.

The five decades of Super Bowl Food:

70’s Buffalo Chicken Wings (an instant classic)

80’s Seven-Layer Dip

90’s Pizza Bagels

2000’s Sliders

2016 Quality Ingredients, big flavors and the finest football snacks made better!

Here is some inspiration to help you totally nail it for your Game Day Snacks. I lovesuper high-end versions of comfort food…such as my “Prime Cheesesteak Sandwich”done on a soft sandwich roll with thin slices of Rib Eye, caramelized onions topped witha melted Mornay Truffle White Cheddar Sauce!!!

These are the winning plays…serve a Bloody Mary shrimp cocktail as a boozy starter;Sriracha Lime Shrimp Skewers or Sticky Sriracha chicken wings; grown-up grilledcheese sandwiches with Turkey, Brie and Pears (chicken will work just fine) and a grown-up soup to go along with it such as a wild mushroom soup.

Slow Roast Turkey or Chicken Wings with a spicy Habanero BBQ sauce; Buy frozenmini meatballs and cook them in a Root Beer BBQ sauce; serve a warm Portabella Subwith melted provolone and roasted red peppers; buy bags of Sriracha Popcorn andsprinkle with Furikake (A Japanese seasoning, the salt and pepper of Japan, a crunchy, earthy, briny, salty, Umami topping).

The fourth quarter calls for an adult treat…an Ice Cream Beer Float. Try a stout withchocolate, vanilla or mint chip ice cream or a brown ale with rocky road. One word ofcaution: Always place the ice cream in the glass first, otherwise you will have a foamymess! Serve with a few maraschino cherries on top, whole mint leaves and gratedchocolate for garnish.

The expression “The Devil is in the details” was revised by German-American modernist architect, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, stating in agrand positive rewrite “God is in the details.”

His life’s work was dedicated to mastering every small and eveninsignificant detail of every design project. This axiom of distilling thedetail to arrive at perfection is the ultimate inspiration, motivation, andunwavering precept of the Balboa Bay Club’s resident HowardLieberman. Taking the basic footprint of a two bedroom waterfronthome at the Balboa Bay Club, Lieberman, 70, enlisted a team ofoutstanding architectural design professionals to create the ultimatepied-à-terre.

Born in Cleveland, Ohio at the end of WWII, Lieberman moved withhis family to California as an infant in 1946. They settled in West LosAngeles, and he grew up in Culver City. Father Jack Lieberman was ahard-driving self-made man who built a successful auto salvagecompany in the post war 1950s and young Lieberman would follow hisfather’s path. The business would grow over the ensuing half centuryand still operates today, under new ownership.

Formerly married, and the father of daughter Wendy Lieberman, thefamily would reside in Anaheim. Howard Lieberman grew up with acouple of readily identifiable So Cal male passions; cars and the beach. From a young age, he shared his love of Newport Beach, and he madeup his mind that one day he would live there. And, when he made it toNewport, there would be a Bentley in his garage. Fast forward to 2015,and yes, boyhood dreams can and do come true.

In January of 2013, Lieberman, a new resident of Balboa Bay Club, set out on a seven month renovation journey to create his dream homeon the water. Designer Mariessa Wolfe, a talented design professionalwith studios in the Stonemill Design Center, Costa Mesa was enlistedto supervise the project.

Wolfe, a California native of San Francisco, has lived and worked inthe OC for the past 30 years building a reputation in cutting edgecontemporary design. Beginning her career in the 1980s working forthe exclusive Kreiss Collection, Mariessa honed her skills, and trainedher eye recognizing and validating the Van der Rohe axiom that “God isabsolutely in the details.” She unquestionably proved this to be trueworking on the Lieberman project.

Investing seven months and a half million dollars in the renovation, completed in August of 2013, the result has been compared to visitingthe ultimate and elegant state room on a world-class yacht. Wolfestarted with the highest quality flooring, wall treatments, a total remodelof the kitchen and bathrooms and closets, reworked the lighting, soundand windows and then furnished the two bedroom, two bath residence.“This is not just a home, it’s a lifestyle,” she offered pointing to the wideopen glass doors revealing the flow from living room to terrace, alsofurnished and designed to complement the interior of the space.

Top of the line vendors including Donghia, Thomas Levine, Cantoni,Holly Hunt, Dakota Jackson and Bruton, to name a few of the designer’ssources were incorporated in the finished product.

Wolfe chose the LA showroom of A. Rudin to construct major customfurniture pieces. Artist Jonathan Frank created Acrylic sculptures for theresidence, while artisans from Venetian Stone Works laid flooring andthe Hoppi Brothers created custom paint surfaces.

Hardwood surfaces dominate the living and dining rooms with arearugs from Mansour Carpet called “hair on hide.” The bedrooms arecarpeted with Stark. Hand studded suede lines the walls of the masterbedroom which boasts closet built-ins that required special design andengineering. All custom lighting throughout the apartment was donepersonally by Julian Lozano of LU Electronic, Irvine, CA.

Lieberman’s kitchen and bathrooms by Kitchen Spaces, wouldqualify for international design awards. Under counter lightingilluminates stone countertops. Marble, stone, tile, and glass are blendedto perfection with custom cabinetry that certifies as fine furniture.Additional lighting and sound is meticulously hidden and unobtrusive.Even the residence electric panel is disguised, built into a customdesigned wall panel.

“I am a very lucky man to live in such an amazing place. My homeis everything I ever hoped for and it is my greatest pleasure to share itwith family and friends,” offers Lieberman joining his team Allan Steinand Mariessa Wolfe on the terrace overlooking the Newport Harbor.“Who says dreams don’t come true,” he adds with a grin.Indeed they do.

30 • JANUARY 2016

Setting an intention is like casting a wish. Throughout the year, we are constantlysetting an intention for our work, relationships, and health. However the New Yearalways casts a deeper line into the magic we call life. Wherever you direct yourattention, your intention comes to fruition. Notice how that focus can change from dayto day. In order to keep on the trajectory of magical intentions that end up breaking youout of your looping patterns, it is necessary that you put in place the resources needed.

“Change the way your look at things and the things around you will change” Dr. W. Dyer.

First, make a list of the 4 major categories in your life.• Work• Relationships/Single• Health/ Food / Exercise• Community/ Friendship

Next write down what your intention has been around these subjects for the pastyear(s). • Name your goals and what needed to happen in order for you to achieve them. • What got in your way? • Who did you have to be in order for them to come true?• What is your “why”?

We cast an intention and it comes either from lack or from love. For example “I needto make sales or else I will get fired.” The thing that is driving this intention is the fearof getting fired. This kind of behavior promotes over thinking, worrisome and oftenstressful people. If you flipped your “why” from “getting fired” to “I need to make salesbecause the product I sell brings joy, love and a much better quality of life to others”,then you are coming from love. You will meet the right people to make all the moneyneeded without all of the stress involved. If you are thinking “well, that sounds all fineand dandy, but my product doesn’t offer a high quality of living and I really don’t likewhat I am doing.. as a matter of fact I am in it just for the money.” Then that is a muchdeeper subject to look into.

Why would you do something all day every day that only brings you the money tokeep on doing that which you don’t really enjoy doing?

This life is precious, sacred and full of adventure. Live as though you mean it. Makedecisions in order to live not just to survive. I have first hand asked people at the endof their lives “What is the one thing that you would have done differently in lookingback?” Their number one answer across the board was “have a career that I reallyloved and enjoyed, I spent too many years suffering in stress, not playing enough andworking too hard.”

Now that you have a guided road map as to your intentions coming from love orfear, re-write the list above and create a new intention for 2016, one that comes fromtrust. You have the capacity to become all you are called to be. Yes, plant the seed, next trust and then notice your way of “being” all of the time. Pay attention to when youmove from love and trust to fear and stress. Your way of “being” is your personal songyou sing to Divine Love. Pay attention and make sure it is a song worth singing.

Make reminder post it notes for your mirror. Speak kindly about yourself; every cellin your body is listening. Surround yourself with other people who want more out of life.

“It’s never a matter of lack of resources, it is a matter of lack ofresourcefulness,” Tony Robbins.

Have you ever wondered what your kids/grandkids are talking about? Have they evermade fun of you for a phrase you have said that seemed normal to you? Each generationcomes with its own slang, but nowadays it seems that this slang is changing so frequentlythat it is hard to keep up. Here are some common phrases that gained great steam in2015.

1. On Fleek: You may have heard that younger generation alluding to this, especially whenit comes to someone’s outer appearance and more specifically eyebrows (There is afascination with them being thick and symmetrical at the moment thanks to theKardashians). The simple answer is that it means on point, perfect, exactly right, or ontrend. For example, “Your outfit today is on fleek” would mean that this person picked theperfect outfit today, and they could not look more stylish. This common phrase that gainedpopularity in 2014 has earlier origins, but as most popular expressions go, did not pick upreal steam until celebrities began using it in their social media accounts. On Instagram, apopular smartphone application that allows its users to post pictures and document allaspects of their life visually (think online scrapbook), if you search how many times peoplehave posted a picture and associated the term “on fleek” with it, you will get 760,387 posts. With that many posts, I think it’s time we add this one to the knowledge bank.

2. Netflix and Chill: While many teens are using this nowadays to be associated withsomething risqué, the literal meaning is quite simple. With older generations, we might referto seeing a picture or going to the movies or renting a movie (VHS then later DVD), but withthe newer generations, everything is streaming in real time from the Internet into our livingrooms through such companies as Netflix. It is actually quite common for the youngergenerations to not even own a movie player. For this reason, the term Netflix refers to amovie and the term chill refers to hanging out, relaxing, or let’s not get into the morepromiscuous ways people have used this. So, next time you hear your children askingsomeone to Netflix and chill beware that this is the 2015 equivalent for a date, and makesure that comes with the purest of intentions.

3. Turnt Up: Gained its extreme popularity when rapper, Lil’ Jon released his famous song,“Turn Down for What” in 2014. With over 300 million views of its music video online, it istime to take notice of this term. Synonyms for “turnt up” can range from ready to party tooverly excited to in the mood to have a good time. Thus, the antonym for this would be turntdown, so if ‘Lil Jon is asking people why they would turn down, he is ultimately saying don’tbe boring and get turnt up. Why “turnt” instead of “turned” you ask? Good question. Withthe younger generations loving any kind of slang or shortcuts that would lend themselvesto adult-confusing, texting lingo- the question is why not?

4. Squad Goals/ Relationship Goals: These termsare often used together on your children’s socialmedia posts, and you may have seen journalists in2015 referring to these terms when writing aboutcelebrities. In an age where envy is normal andeverything to be superficially envious of is crammeddown our throats, younger generations are usingthese terms haphazardly to refer to people that theyaspire to be. For example, your child may post apicture of a perfectly put together celebrity couple outon a date with another equally famous put togethercouple and under the picture write “squad goals”“relationship goals”. This means that the personposting the picture wishes that their “squad” (i.e.people they hang out with) and their “relationship”were like this. Some may call this ludicrous, butyou’re always telling your children to set high goalsfor themselves, right?!

5. Bae: This one may be my favorite for variousreasons, but if you thought the previous ones wereludicrous just wait! There are various meaningsonline for this term, which gained popularity in 2014,but the simple explanation is that this is a modernterm for the person you are in a romantic relationshipwith. Some say that this is an acronym for BeforeAnyone Else meaning that the person you refer to asBAE is the most important person in your life, but mymost favorite explanation for this term is muchsimpler. Remember when I said that the youngergenerations love slang and texting lingo, oneexplanation for the word “bae” is a shortened versionof the word “babe” for people who are too lazy tosay/spell the extra B! Either way, you may call thissweetheart, honey, or love, but your children arecalling it bae.

While all of these phrases may roll off the youngergenerations’ tongues, they may not be as easy to addto your vernacular. Don’t fret- this knowledge is powerenough. It is important for all generations tounderstand each other, but not as important for themto speak out of their realm of comfort. While yourchildren may make fun of you for saying “goingsteady”- trust me, there will be just as much mockeryif not more, if you say “Netflix and chill.”

Second Opinion

A New Year Full of ChallengesWhat’s Required to Keep Pace?

By John Jolliffe, LMFT

Science has established beyond reasonable doubt that the polar ice caps are melting, theoceans are rising, and the earth is in fact warming due to the burning of hydrocarbons – The“Greenhouse Effect.”

The scientific community reported recently that an asteroid nearly collided with the earth. It missed doing so by only 500,000 miles. Had the collision taken place it would have beenequivalent to several thousand hydrogen bombs all exploding at one moment. Whether we likeit or not, science is in the news and outer space is here to stay.

Through advances in information technology, we are being increasingly exposed toinformation previously thought impossible. But is all this awareness help or hindrance? We’veaccepted that ignorance isn’t bliss, but often a cruel form of self-imposed resignation, yetwhat are the dangers of overexposure? Are we prepared to know too much? Are weemotionally prepared for the kinds of decisions this advance information requires? Are weready? Some of us just got over post-traumatic stress. What’s next, pre-traumatic stressdisorder? The future is upon us before we have processed the past. If superconductortechnology has its way, the future and the past will be the same moment. What will berequired of us to keep pace?

Astronauts of the future must be trained to depend upon forethought. Forethought isanticipatory thinking that foresees the relationship between a present decision and a futureconsequence. Alvin Toffler ranks as one of the best-known futurists. His book, Future Shock, became a popular phrase signifying the stress of change on our personal lives. In it, Tofflermaintained that changes in every dimension of life were going to accelerate to such speedsthat they would overwhelm people and organizations in high-tech urban societies, leavingthem in a state of confusion and disorientation.

We are living through one of the great transitions in human history. From an industrialmass society that emphasized conformity to a de-massified society and economy thatencourages diversity and individualism. As the speed to which we are being introduced tothose things unfamiliar increases, once familiar navigational references will become archaicor nonexistent. Precognition and forethought will emerge as the sin qua non of navigationalaids for all future astronauts.

Precognition is the ability to relate to events not yet experienced. It requires unusualperceptivity and discernment. Precognition draws upon antecedent experience or knowledge. Each of us depends every day upon antecedent knowledge. It’s a fancy term for knowledgeacquired from previous experience.

The second navigational aid is forethought, thinking in anticipation of an event.Forethought acknowledges the relationship of seemingly unrelated events to one another. Itcorrelates a decision made at one point in travel with its natural and logical consequences

or future destination. Navigational aids ofprecognition and forethought will be standardoperational procedures for all future travels whetherin space or on the ground. For we are all astronautstraveling at different speeds toward an uncertainfuture. What differentiates us is the speed in whichwe travel and the destination to which we hope toarrive. What unites us is the quest for navigationaldependability that will serve us in the twenty-firstcentury and beyond.

Mental health on space ship earth is currentlyretrospective. Practitioners of the healing arts arelimited to eloquent discourses regarding the causesof human misery. What the past one hundred yearshas taught us is there is no cure in diagnosis.

Twenty-first century travelers must no longer relyupon hindsight as a suitable navigational aid owing tothe speeds at which we now travel. The training inforethought and precognition, the linking of today’sdecisions with corresponding effects of tomorrow willbe critical if we are to avoid a variety of volitionalhazards. For instance, we know today that alcoholconsumption relates to a decrease in health, memory, and an increase in birth defects, and thatcertain family units produce emotionally immatureoffspring. The debate is over.

Twenty-first century computers enable us todemonstrate in a fraction of a second the reciprocalrelationship between two seemingly unrelatedevents. As a population of astronauts hurling into anuncertain future, we must begin to acknowledge ourinnate abilities to make similar connections. Peopletoo frequently wish to be fed what they have alreadydigested. We know more than we acknowledge. “Iknow you knew,” is often all that one person needs tohear. I have gained more cooperation from my clientswhen I have explained that there are no answers tolife, only more or less useful insights and that theirinsights are likely to be as valuable as any other. Ananswer suggests complete understanding. Who is soarrogant as to assume they understand completely?

If it is possible to improve upon the problems oftoday, could it be possible to avoid the problems oftomorrow? Yes, I believe it is clearly possible. What isrequired is the ability to anticipate life events. Wemust be able to see into thefuture. Forethought and pre-cognition is that ability.

He is loved by fans world-wide. Some debate he’s the bestto ever live while some say he’s behind the likes of Jordan,Wilt Chamberlain, Kareem, Bill Russell, Oscar Robertson,Magic, Bird, and Lebron. Kobe grew up in Italy over a period of eightyears while Joe was playing for the Italian Pro League. Kobelearned fluent Italian and Spanish while living over-seas andreturned home where he spent his high school years playingball on Philadelphia’s Main Line. Hornets as the 13th pick in the first round out of high school and at thattime, age 17, the youngest player to be drafted into the NBA. Most basketballfans know the trade story, but for those who do not, we have Vlade Divac tothank for Kobe’s move to Los Angeles and The Lakers since Kobe was tradedfor Divac, the 7 Foot 1 Serbian Center Forward.

During Kobe’s first season in the NBA, he was named to the NBA All-Rookie Team. In his second year, Kobe took home the NBA All Star DunkContest, and in his third season was the youngest NBA All Star starter at age19. From 2000–2002, Kobe took the Lakers to three back to backchampionships alongside Shaquille O’Neal under Coach Phil Jackson. Kobewas named NBA All-Star MVP for the first time in 2002 followed by 2007,2009, and 2011. In 2005, Kobe scored 81 points in a single game winagainst Toronto following second in the NBA history to Wilt Chamberlainscoring 100 points in a game. Kobe was named NBA regular season MVP in2008 and wins his first Olympic gold medal with The Dream Team in Beijing. From 2009–2010, Kobe took the Lakers to another back to backchampionship run, this time alongside Pau Gasol, Lamar Odom, Metta WorldPeace (Ron Artest), Andrew Bynum, Derek Fisher, and Coach Phil Jacksonand wins the 2009 & 2010 NBA Championship Most Valuable Player Award. In 2010, Kobe passed Jerry West’s record as The All Time Lakers LeadingScorer. In 2012, Kobe won his second gold in London. In 2014, Kobesurpassed the great Michael Jordan to become third on the NBA’s All TimeLeading Scoring List with 32,310 career points.

One thing is clearly not debatable, and that is that Kobe Bryant is a truechampion. He is among individuals in this world that stand alone for theirexceptional abilities, and Kobe is one of them, and will be remembered asone of the sports all-time greats.

I don’t know about you, but I am always so excited at the idea of a fresh start. The end of a year feels like one chapter closes and anotherbegins. I feel lighter in some ways, like I have wiped the slate clean and can begin refreshed, ready for the next year of exciting adventures. This can be the same for our homes. It’s time to clean up from all the holiday festivities and pack away all the clutter.

Nothing soothes the soul more than a home of tranquility and serenity. One of our favorite paint colors here at Barclay Butera is actuallynamed Tranquility by Benjamin Moore. The photo of the home in this month’s article is a project Barclay Butera did for Terranea ResortResidences in Pacific Palisades. It is a gorgeous golf resort set on the rocky coast with sweeping views of the Pacific.

Soft sea greens and blues inspired by the sea itself mixed with creamy whites is an “AAAHHH” moment from the second you walk throughthe door. Barclay’s signature grass cloth wall coverings are the “sand” to the “sea” tones on the fabrics! Curling up on the cozy sectional isalso a must, and you are instantly bathed in a calming cocoon.

And it doesn’t stop there! Why should it? Beds are dressed in clouds of creamy, dreamywhite with pillows and throws in signature azure blues and sea glass green. When these huesare set against deep, rich java and chocolate woods they become even richer. And when youhave all your base furniture fabrics in neutral tones like crisp white or clam you can easily makethe transition, if you so desire, to change out throw pillows from season to season or movethem from room to room.

I find that being in this residence makes me feel relaxed and refreshed, like waking up onthe beach after a nap in the spring sunshine on a warm blanket. And let’s face it, after theholidays and a busy 2015… doesn’t that sound grand!!

So, if you are up in the Palisades, stop into the Terranea ResortResidences and ask for a tour of the Barclay Butera Residence. If youlove it and want your home to make you feel the same way, come see usat Barclay Butera Interiors!
