January 2017
National Day of Service
Monday, January 16th
1:30 pm in the Party Room
Every year on Martin Luther King Jr. Day,
individuals and organizations around the United
States celebrate Dr. King’s birthday through a
National Day of Service project. This year, Cor-
nell Estates invites you to join our residents to
create welcome boxes for foster kids!
This will be Cornell Estates fourth year
assembling welcome boxes for children entering
foster care. They will receive the boxes while
waiting in the Department of Human Services
Office. Most kids just have a few items in a
plastic garbage bag, but often times these kids
have absolutely nothing to call their own.
Volunteers will assemble the boxes, add a note
of encouragement, and then send them on their
way to DHS Child Welfare where they will be
distributed to each child.
If you would like to donate any items to help us
fill these boxes such as Markers, Crayons, color-
ing books, Small Stuff Animals, Tooth Brushes
and Tooth Paste. Please give them to Maria.
We encourage you to serve our community
alongside us on National Day of Service.
Hillsboro Fire Fighters to
Receive $3347.40
Donation to Toy and Joy Program
Wednesday, January 4th
Thanks to the efforts of countless volunteers,
Charlene will present to members of the Hillsboro
Firefighter’s Toy and Joy Program a check for
$3347.40 on Wednesday, January 4th.
The donation is an annual contribution to the Toy
& Joy Program, which provides toys for under
privileged children in the Hillsboro area.
The donations came from a variety of fundraisers,
including Cornell’s 16th annual Christmas
Marketplace Bazaar, that was held on Saturday,
November 19th. All vendor fees, proceeds, and
donations were included.
Members of the Hillsboro Firefighter’s spouses
also joined Cornell Staff on Saturday, December
10th for the annual Bake Sale.
Both events require a tremendous effort from the
staff, residents, and volunteers. We can’t thank
you enough for all your help!

Unlike eyesight, hearing loss is not as well
understood or talked about. If you or someone you
know is struggling to understand, even if it is only
in certain noisy situations, come join us for this
one hour class.
We will review things like the anatomy and
common causes of hearing loss, impacts of hearing
loss, prevalence of hearing loss in our society, and
treatment options including assistive listening
devices and hearing aids.

informative class on Friday, January 13th at 1:30
pm with Dar in Scheurer of Smart Step Hear ing.

present real challenges for caregivers to manage, join
us to learn to decode behavioral messages, identify
common behavior triggers, and learn strategies to
help intervene with some of the most common
behavioral challenges of Alzheimer’s disease.

Introducing: Poetry Corner!
A place for Cornell Estates residents to express themselves and share their written work
Submitted by: Evelyn Steele
Retired Now
I don’t have to achieve now.
Off the treadmill.
Nothing to prove,
I can rest at last.
Cornell Estates, a retirement home
Set apart from society.
Apart from the rat race.
A place to rest quietly.
That alarm clock… no more!
Get up when I please.
Snuggle into my bed.
Oh, how sweet it is!
My puppy dog and kitty cat.
Endorphines with legs.
That’s what they are.
Giving and giving as I receive.
Never again to be lonely.
Just knock on any door..
This retirement place, well,
Doors and doors galore
Living here, in this place,
In this little nest of mine
No one telling me
“Turn up the heat” or “open the
door”.
My little sanctuary -
A place of peace
Free at last
To simply just release
