Leadership Meeting
News About People
J anuary 2017
Our prayers of comfort are with the family of Bessie Miller, who died in December. Bessie’s service will be held on January 27th at 11 a.m. Also, prayers of comfort for the family of Charlie Carter, who died on December 3rd. Prayers of support for Hugh and Mary Kimbrough, Hugh is now on hospice care. Prayers of healing for Florence O’Conner who was hospitalized with pneumonia.
There will be a meeting for all leaders of the church on January 11th at 7:00 p.m. The meeting will
focus on the ministry of the church in 2017. There will be a time for strategizing about next steps
in ministry. There are various areas of ministry to be discussed: children and younger adults, min-
istry with men, prayer, faith sharing, newcomer welcome. All are encouraged to attend.
Human Relations Sunday, January 15th
A special offering will be taken on January 15th for Hu-
man Relations Sunday. This is one of “six special church-
wide Sundays with offerings celebrated in each United
Methodist Church” as required by The Book of Discipline
2008. Your offering on Human Relations Day, the Sunday
before the birthday observance of the Rev. Martin Luther
King Jr., strengthens United Methodist outreach to com-
munities in the United States and Puerto Rico, encourag-
ing social justice and work with at-risk youth. Please give
generously. Your gift makes a world of difference!
Sign-up Sunday
January 22nd is Sign-up Sunday. The Church Council is sponsoring this Sunday to sign-up for lit-
urgists, fellowship time hosts and flower donors for 2017. There will be inserts in the bulletins dur-
ing the month of January on which congregation members can write down their preferences before
the 22nd. Our goal is to fill as many Sundays as possible so that we can be ready for a successful
year of ministry together. We know that ministry is more fun with more people involved. So, please
sign-up!
Leadership Recognition
Sunday
The new 2017 church officers and
committee members will be honored
on January 22nd during the worship
service. Please come and offer your
support and encouragement to our
church leaders.

Jubilee Initiative
The Jubilee Initiative is a new program for
churches in the California-Nevada Annual
Conference. The Jubilee Initiative is a micro-
loan program that provides financial re-
sources for people with an immediate need,
or seed money for a business venture. The
loans are made by the United Methodist
Federal Credit Union. (UMFU) and are guar-
anteed by local churches. Local churches
establish an account with UMFU. There is a
loan committee in the local church that re-
views applications and approves the guaran-
tee of the loan. The loan committee will offer
support through financial education and
mentoring.
We are at this time working on raising funds
to put on deposit with UMFU. Please consid-
er making a contribution to the Jubilee Initia-
tive.
From the Family of Meredith Amass
Thank you so much for your kind words in
celebration of my dad’s 100th birthday. It

Searching for Happiness:
How Generosity, Faith, and Other Spiritu-
al Habits Can Lead to a Full Life
January 8 - February 5 Martin Thielen offers ten traits of happy and fulfilled
people. Using psychological research, personal anec-
dotes, and Scripture, Thielen begins the path to content-
ment by showing how life circumstances-including in-
come, health, physical appearance, and marital status-
only account for about 10 percent of a person’s overall
life satisfaction. From there, he offers alternatives to
the frequent methods we use to make ourselves happy.
Thielen contends that expressing gratitude and cultivat-
ing optimism is the surer path to joy.
Art & Religion in the 21st Century
February 19-April 2 This is an in-depth study surveying an international ros-
ter of artists who use their work to explore religion’s
cultural, social, political, and psychological impacts on
today’s world. An introduction outlines the debates and
controversies that the art/religion connection has pre-
cipitated throughout history. Each of the book’s ten
chapters introduces a theme-ideas of the Creation, the
figure of Jesus, the sublime, wonder, diaspora and ex-
ile, religious and political conflict, ritual practice,
mourning and monumentalizing and spiritual
“dwelling” in the body and in space-- followed by a
selection of works of art that illustrates that theme. Art-
ists discussed , include Vanessa Beecroft, Maurizio
Cattelan, Makoto Fujimura, David LaChapelle, Annette
Messager, Jason Rhoades, Andres Serrano, and Zeng
Fanzhi.

church members. We are in need of cards at this time.
We welcome your donations of cards for men, women,
and children of all ages, as well as anniversary cards.

UMW News Thank you
UMW decorated a “Nutcracker Sweet” tree for
the festival of trees. Thanks to all of your lovely
donations of ornaments and gifts for under the
tree, it was beautiful! Marti McMurdo purchased
it and she and Dawn are enjoying it this holiday
season. We are already planning for our next
year’s tree. It will have a red and white
theme...think peppermints and candy canes,
and anything red or white. As you undecorate
your tree you may find items you no longer need
for next year...then there are those Christmas
sales all year long. Be on the look out for items
we can use. You can give them to Suzanne Gal-
loway or put them in the mission box on the ta-
ble in the hallway and we’ll store them away un-
til next fall.
UMW held it’s December meeting, a holi-
day potluck social, at Suzanne’s house. Every-
one enjoyed great food and fellowship and test-
ed their knowledge of potluck tunes and trivia.
We think we finally have a plan for the
spring UMW Tea. More info to come right after
Christmas, but here’s what’s in the works...We
have reserved Saturday, April 1st, 2017 for this
year’s tea….So we are hoping to go with an
April Fool’s Day theme...whimsical and fun. The
entertainment we be a magician! Something
completely different than we have ever done be-
fore. So be thinking about how we can decorate
for this event, what would be fun ideas for food,
how to add a touch of whimsy to your table with
a fun centerpiece or ??
We delivered all of the items we have col-
lected so far for the homeless to Solano Life
house to support their Christmas outreach to the
homeless. They are going to deliver them on
Christmas Eve to people living on the street or
in camps. Continue bringing in items (there is
now a much more extensive list of items that
can be used on the mission table) all winter and
spring and we will make up more kits before
summer.
