“Pastels are my talent.”
Edie grew up in Bergen County, New Jersey, and moved to
Broomfield CO. When it was time to move out of the snow, the
logical place was Sierra Vista. Edie left the banks and municipal
offices well decorated with her paintings after 30 years. She has been drawing and
painting all of her life and is mainly self-taught, with many wonderful teachers and
workshops along the way. Beauty, color and design motivate her. She finds still life
a favorite subject, and to her, a portrait is a still life with a person in it. Although
she taught oil painting and composition to adults for 12 years,
Edie‘s main medium is pastel. Edie has served HAA in several
capacities over the years and is still
a mainstay of the Association.
Currently Edie has handled the info
booth at the Art in the Park, and
was on the Sierra Vista Arts and
Humanities Commission.
Edie Manion
I’m originally from Chicago, where I earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Fine Art from the
School of the Art Institute of Chicago. While there, I studied painting, drawing, pottery
and weaving. My family moved to Arizona in 1979. The brilliant sunshine and
spectacular scenery of the magnificent American southwest inspired me to create artwork
filled with light and color. For several years, my husband and I owned Artees Signs &
Shirts, where I created many computer graphic images for silkscreen printing and
lettering, as well as custom airbrushed imagery on T-shirts. I hand weave many colorful
rugs on my old-fashioned loom. I also create charming, small sculptured wire with
gemstone trees. As for fine art, I enjoy painting large abstract images in acrylics. One of
my great joys is drawing realistic colored pencil portraits and especially, images of
flowers and foliage.
More recently, I’ve discovered the wonderful artistry of fused glass. I create colorful
decorative plates, both large and small, featuring geometric shapes or abstract flowers.
Lately, my passion is fused dichroic glass jewelry, which is a distinctive and
contemporary addition to the vast tradition of jewelry making. In my Sierra Vista studio, I
cut the glass and work with my kiln to refine and fire the colorful pieces until they
become dazzling cabochons. Next, I dramatically wrap each glittering creation with gold
or silver wire, and for a finishing flourish add sparkling crystals.
Each glass and metal jewelry creation is a fusion of light, shape, color, and feminine
beauty. You’ll delight in the compliments you’ll receive when you wear one of these
unique pieces of wearable art!

Member News & Information
Hi ho,Artyfolks,
Like the proverbial bad penny, here I am back again. Or is it more like
Michael Corleone in "Godfather II"? In any event, we on the Board have
just completed a round of musical chairs, due to the requirement in our
by-laws that stipulates that, to be President, one has to be on the Board
of Directors for no less than two years. That rule is not a bad thing in
that it helps to ensure that whoever is President has at least some clue as
to what is going on in the organization. But it also can have the effect,
especially this year, of narrowing down the field of potential candidates
to just a paltry few eligible poor souls, more than half of whom already
are officers, and the rest of whom really don't want to be. And that,
despite all of the power and the glory that comes with the office. It is my
hope that by the time these next two years are up, this situation will have
improved, and I can finally be put out to pasture where I belong.
Mmmmmm.....green grass....
In the meantime, here we are with a brand new year ahead and lots of
challenges to meet, not the least of which is finding new ways to
promote our gallery, utilize our space, and bring in more of the public.
The classes, receptions and paint parties are a very good start. Our
Promotion Committee has come up with some good ideas, but we also
need more people who are ready, willing and able to help implement
those ideas. By that I mean worker bees, as well as big concept thinkers.
One idea that the Committee has been exploring is a series of murals for
the north wall of our building. That could draw a lot of attention and
give passers-by more of an idea of what we are all about. We also need
to finish off the tile work around the window on that side of the building.
Thanks to some folks at the Pottery Studio, especially Karl & Glenda,
the tiles themselves are already done, and all that's needed now is the
installation.
So there are a few things to think about, and there will be lots more to
come. And do keep in mind, we are always grateful for volunteers, and
you don't have to be a rocket scientist to help.
In closing, I would like to thank Gary and Ginger for all the enormous
efforts that they put in over the past two years in helping us to get moved
and established in our new location, and in getting the Gallery up and
running. It was a huge undertaking for all of us, but especially for them.
But now that it's done, we are, as an organization, in a better than ever
position to keep moving ahead.
So, Happy New Year to you all,
Liz

YOUTH ARTS FESTIVAL The 4th Annual Youth Arts Festival, sponsored by the Sierra Vista Arts and Humanities Commission, in
cooperation with Cochise College, will be held on Saturday, February 24 at the College campus off Charleston Rd.
We are still looking for a few more volunteers to conduct or assist in art activities aimed at children, mainly in
grades K-6. There is a $50 stipend for activity leaders, all the materials (within reason) will be provided by the
College, and you get a free lunch. To qualify as a leader, you must fill out a proposal form describing what kind of
activity you would like to do, and listing the materials you will need to have provided. Given that the time now is
very short, you will need to do that pronto. Like no later than January 10. For more information, call Liz at:803-
7157. or email at: [email protected], for a proposal form, or just to volunteer to assist. For that, you don't need to
fill out any forms, but you don't get a stipend either, but you do get a free lunch, a fun time, plus the satisfaction of
knowing that you helped to provide a child with an art experience that he or she might never have had otherwise.
These days, with almost no art classes for children in the elementary schools, this kind of exposure is needed more
than ever.
WATER TOWER MURAL The details are still very sketchy, but there is a new project afoot- that is a mural for the
Liberty Utilities storage tank on Canyon Rd., just off Fry Blvd. It is huge as you might
guess from the picture. We don't know yet whether the project will involve painting the
whole thing, or just decorating part of it. There will be a stipend paid, but as yet, we do not
know how much that might be. At this point what we need is just an idea of who among you might possibly be
interested in working on this project. If you think you might be, let me know. I will pass along more information
when I get it.
